Wow – that was the summer that was! And didn’t it fly by? Everything is starting to get back to its normal routine. It’s not just the schools that are starting new terms; local clubs and societies are beginning their autumn programmes. We’ve included a fair number here, but there are only so many pages at our disposal, and there are SO many clubs in Wells! If you fancy learning a new skill, such as folk dancing, you’ll find a class. Or perhaps you already paint, sing or play an instrument and have talked about joining a club. Well, make this the month that you actually start. As always there is a lot happening this month with exhibitions, concerts and fundraising events. But, don’t forget, we can only write about your group or event if we know about it! So email me details or you can now contact me via twitter or facebook. If you can send a good quality picture or logo, all the better; it’s a great way to add impact. Local Reach is delivered to over 6,000 households around Wells free of charge, so it really is the ideal way to reach your local audience. October issue editorial deadline: Wednesday 7 September 2016.

A linocut is a relief print produced in a manner similar to a woodcut but that uses linoleum as the surface into which the design is cut and printed from. It uses a process you can do at home, without a press. The workshop will include demonstrations followed by practical hands on experience and experimentation with tools and techniques to create your own, unique, linocut print. www.somersetguild.co.uk

SELF-KINDNESS IS THE KEY TO WEIGHT LOSS, SAYS LOCAL SLIMMING EXPERT Weight loss expert Amber Slow, a Slimming World Consultant who runs the Wednesday evening Slimming World group in Wells says that if people want to lose weight for good then they need to learn to be kinder to themselves when things go wrong. "At Slimming World we have the best eating plan in the world where members can, and do, lose weight without ever having to go hungry," says Amber "We have the best understanding of the psychology of slimmers and use the latest research to ensure we are supporting everyone in the best possible way. A recent Slimming World survey of 1,722 slimmers found that almost everyone who had tried to lose weight in the past (98%) had experienced a slip-up where they went off-track in a way that they worried would affect their weight loss journey. 84% of slimmers automatically criticised themselves, calling themselves ‘weak’, ‘stupid’ and ‘a failure’ - words they would never have used to describe someone else in their position. This harsh criticism was found to lead to comfort eating or giving up on those diets completely. The survey found that at Slimming World, members had learned how to reduce how critical they are of themselves when things go wrong and have instead become more self-reassuring. As a result of recognising that they’re only human and applauding

their own determination, the research found that Slimming World members are now less likely to comfort eat and more likely to get back on track within a day or two, and more likely to lose weight and keep it off. Amber adds: "Every Slimming World group helps members achieve long-term success through healthy lifestyle changes. Food Optimising is a unique and healthy eating plan which satisfies the biggest of appetites. It encourages people to fill up on unlimited amounts of satisfying foods such as meat, fish, poultry, vegetables, fruit, eggs, pasta and much more, and to enjoy meals with the whole family. Meals like curry and rice, lasagne, Sunday roasts and even fish and chips. Members love the fact that they aren’t restricted. "Just as importantly, in Wells we provide support 52 weeks of the year across three groups and our members know from the minute they first walk through the door, often when their self-esteem is at its lowest, that they will never be judged, that their details are completely confidential and that they are with people who understand them - because they’ve been Slimming World members themselves". For more information on the Slimming World groups in Wells please contact Amber on 07938 917585 or search ‘Slimming World Wells’ on Facebook

What’s Coming Up Early Next Month ONE WORLD FAIR Saturday 8 October, from 10 a.m. till 4 p.m at Wells Town Hall. Over 30 charities, both local and national, will be with Oxfam for the One World Fair. The organizations already booked include Amnesty International, CAFOD, Christian Aid, Ethiopiaid, Greenpeace, Traidcraft, Fair Trade, Mendip Vegetarians, and, of course, Oxfam. Although MSOG is the organizing group, the important collaborative feature of the One World Fair will shine through – each charity having its own special focus, its own particular cause, but also a shared vision of a better world. Participating groups will be doing different things. Some will have goods to sell – handicrafts, books, Christmas cards and calendars, Fair Trade food, cakes and so on. Some will be asking people to sign their campaigning petitions. Other charities will be looking to increase their membership. One or two will be hoping to form new support groups. All of them will be keen to talk about the issues that motivate them, and to answer questions about their work. There will be a full programme of talks by different charities. And there will be lots of music and refreshments available throughout the day. Entry will be by voluntary donation, but Oxfam’s main intention is to make sure that the event fairly hums with hundreds of wellwishers. The One World Fair, first launched in 2014, is already a major annual event in the Wells calendar. For further information visit www.midsomersetoxfam.co.uk

FOOD FOR THOUGHT Sunday 9 October Sustainable Wells is delighted to be working once again with the organisers of the Wells Food Festival on Sunday 9 October. This year we are running the ‘Food for Thought’ marquee, which will be busting with bite sized pieces for you to devour. As a taster: we will be celebrating good food and tantalising your taste buds to see if you can recognise herbs and spices blind folded; there will be interactive cooking displays from young people showing off their skills and you will find out which local supermarket is best at reducing food waste!! What is there not to love about wonky veg?? Do bring along your examples to show off. We will also ask you to vote on which cake, made out of a vegetable, tastes the best. And not forgetting the human fruit machine. If you would like more information, or are interested in joining Sustainable Wells, please email Laura Sorensen lb.hpc@virgin.net

WELLS FOOD FESTIVAL Sunday 9 October Open from 10.30am to 4.30pm, this is a free, great day out for all the family, packed with fun “foodie” things to do. Last year 10,000 visitors flocked to the city. There are 150 stall holders and street food sellers in the Artisan Market which stretches from the Market Square to the Recreation Ground; the Family Marquee in the Bishops Barn has lots of activities for the younger visitors; the Food for Thought marquee in the Recreation Ground focuses on food sustainability and waste. Head to the Town Hall for three ticketed Food & Drink Tastings. These include cider tasting with local expert, Bob Chaplin, wine tasting with Wraxall Vineyard, and a home curing demonstration from the Somerset Charcuterie. And there's a photographic exhibition open to the public to enter. Bring along a photograph before 10am on the day that fits the title “Eat the Landscape”.
