Acorn Antiques The Musical comes to Street! After their recent success with Aladdin, local award-winning Glastonbury & Street Musical Comedy Society are delighted to be bringing their next production, Acorn Antiques The Musical! to the Strode Theatre in April. Victoria Wood based the hilarious Acorn Antiques on the long running TV serial Cross Roads, exaggerating its apparent low production values, wobbly sets, over-acting and wildly improbable plots. It

6

chronicles the lives and loves of the staff of an antiques shop and lampoons the staples of soap operas: love triangles, amnesiacs and siblings reunited. Wood's aim was to give people "a lovely, happy night in the theatre", and that is what you get: a sparkling musical with witty songs, dance and bags of comedy, seasoned with a smidgeon of adult humour! Acorn Antiques is on at the Strode Theatre from 23-27 April

at 7.30pm nightly, including a Saturday matinee, with tickets ranging in price from £12£16 (concessions available). Book your seats now at www. strodetheatre.co.uk or on 01458 442846. Mrs Overall can't wait to see you there! More information available on our website www.gsmcs. org (follow the links from the homepage).

Why can I see two of everything? When we look around we expect to see one of everything even though we have two eyes open. Our brain normally fuses the images from the two eyes and gives us single vision with binocular depth perception. So, what happens if we suddenly see two of everything? Double vision or diplopia is certainly disconcerting and even debilitating. If there are two images of everything WHICH is the “real one, which image do we believe”? Simply walking around can make a person with double vision feel unsteady and unbalanced and driving can be positively dangerous! The causes of double vision can range from the relatively minor, right through to the LIFE THREATENING and prompt investigation is required. ACES accredited Optometrists can investigate diplopia. The difficulty is that there is often nothing to actually physically see. Diplopia is caused in the main by the loss of control of eye movement resulting in eye misalignment and the production of two images. Loss of eye control will often be caused by something further back behind the eyes. Some of the serious causes may include stroke, aneurysm, brain tumour and infection.

Determining the cause is helped significantly by the information given to your Optometrist..

• When did the double vision start? • Have you hit your head, fallen, or been unconscious? • Is the double vision worse at the end of the day or when you’re tired? • Have you had any other symptoms besides double vision? • Are the images side by side or one above the other?

Management of diplopia is initially concentrated around identifying and addressing the cause. Defective pupil reactions suggest a neurological cause and further tests such as scans may be required. An underlying cause such as diabetes or blood pressure can be treated with medication and the diplopia may resolve over time. In some cases when diplopia is considered stable, special prisms incorporated into spectacle lenses can hold the eyes together preventing the double vision. The advice is that if you experience new double vision and the cause is not obvious like too much “Christmas cheer”, you need to see an Optometrist promptly!

Musings from My Garden By Martin Mudie As I write this, at the beginning of March, the weather is still freezing and the nearest that I get to my garden is to wave to it from the warmth of my kitchen – where all sane gardeners spend the winter – dreaming of spring. Now when I think of spring, I always think of daffodils. They really do mean an English spring for me – and they are so versatile. Often in a mild January – yes I know – some hope!!! – you will see the miniature daffs by the wayside. Then throughout the early part of the year there are a succession of flowers of varying shades of yellow and white to cheer us. The best way of seeing them is

potted up in the garden centres so that you know that they are not only alive but also what height and colour they will be. The only drawback is that you do need to let the foliage die down because that is what feeds the next year’s flowering. However if you allow just six weeks after having cut off the flower head – that will be enough. The other thing about the spring is the wonderful array of flowering shrubs we have in our gardens during April and May. My all-time favourite is the magnolia. At one time there were only really two types ‘Soulangeana’ and ‘Stellata’. The former only for big gardens

and the latter to accommodate smaller plots. Now, however, there are any number of hybrids which are smaller and flower earlier. They usually have names like ’Sue’ and give the height and colour on the label. There are now so many that you can take your pick. I have just ordered and new one I saw in the English Garden magazine called ‘Sunrise’. A lovely mixture of yellow and red. No I have no idea where I can fit it in but the other plants will just have to breathe in! Here’s hoping that the golden days of spring if not already here as you read this are not too far away. Happy gardening

Judith Ludovino, Director of Mendip Hub and currently Chairman of Wells Chamber of Commerce explains events during Work in Wells Week will: • Inspire and educate local people currently working as a freelancers and start ups, highlighting resources that are available to help their businesses grow and succeed • Facilitate links between employers, local schools and Strode College, the Wells Chamber of Commerce and the Mendip Hub • Publicise the environmental and economic benefits of working locally

• Campaign for Wells to be included in Superfast Broadband rollout for Devon and Somerset (Wells is currently the only Mendip town not included in the plans). Work in Wells Week already has strong backing from local organisations, such as the Wells Chamber of Commerce and the networking group BNI West Mendip. Indeed, Maureen Brandon, Mayor of Wells says: “I wish Work in Wells Week 2013 and the Mendip Hub every success. These initiatives have the potential to bring long lasting benefits to the younger and less experienced members of our business community, improving their chances of success. I view these complementary projects to be a positive contribution to the economic development of the city”. You can find out more about Work in Wells Week by visiting www.mendiphub.org Additional Information – Mendip Hub, c/o TelePA Ltd, 27 Glastonbury Road, Wells. BA5 1TW Tel: 01749 686776 Email: events@mendiphub.org

The Mendip Hub – an exciting new facility for businesses in Wells and surrounding towns Businesses in the Mendips understand the need to encourage sustainable economic growth and diversity in order that employers can provide a range of well paid work Families in the area have proved resourceful in tough economic times, with the number of people “freelancing” and starting micro-businesses increasing year on year – what can be done to assist these fledgling businesses, some of whom will become the employers of the future? The Mendip Hub, a social enterprise company, intends to provide flexible “coworking” space for the city of Wells, with affordable, “easy in, easy out” terms in a well resourced, friendly open space (and meeting rooms) with desks to hire by the week or month. Our first choice for the venue is the 2,600 sq ft above Mid Somerset News on Southover. The model for this sort of open plan coworking venture is proven – driven by changes in work patterns brought about by new technologies. Hubs have worked well in dozens of other locations (including Frome) particularly when learning and 16

collaboration are brought into the plan from the outset. The productivity gains for users of similar facilities are impressive, users report the following positive changes to their workstyle (source: 3rd Global Coworking Survey 2012) • 74% ideas relating to business • 71% creativity • 68% ability to focus • 64% completion of tasks in a given time • 62% standard of work Wells Chamber of Commerce has already agreed to support the Menidp Hub and “Work in Wells Week” by encouraging members to take part and display information about the various planned events. Cllr Maureen Brandon, the Mayor, has also pledged support. Find out more at www.mendiphub.co.uk and via our Facebook page: wwwfacebook.com/ mendiphub; there will be the opportunity for local employers to sponsor activities at Mendip Hub, if you’d like to talk about this please contact me on 01749 686776.

Biology students broaden knowledge at Bristol Zoo

Apprenticeships deliver – For local businesses and young people

To mark National Apprenticeship Week in March Strode College in Street joined forces with Tessa Munt, MP for Wells, and local company Party Packs to raise awareness of apprenticeships and the benefits they bring to local businesses and young people. Strode College runs a large number of apprenticeship schemes and sets up new apprenticeships to meet the needs of local businesses - recent additions include horticulture, teaching and learning support and dog grooming. The College is training a growing number of apprentices for a wide variety of businesses across Somerset including accountants, construction companies, care homes, sports centres, hairdressing salons, garden centres, restaurants and retail businesses. Tessa Munt, MP for Wells, visited Party Packs recently to find out how the apprenticeship scheme is working for the business and for the three young apprentices employed there.

Over 100 A Level Biology and Human Biology students from Strode College visited Bristol Zoo recently to expand their knowledge of evolution and classification ahead of their summer exams. As well as being a leading visitor attraction, with over 450 species of animals, Bristol Zoo is also an award-winning conservation and education charity. While at the zoo the students had small group sessions in the education centre. Specialist staff used a range of specimens to focus on evolution and classification, including furs, bones, stuffed and live animals. The students are now completing a research project in college using information about the classification and scientific names of the many animal species at the zoo.

Pupils chat with friends in China Children in Ashcott Primary School have been chatting with their friends in China recently via a video link using the school iPADs. Members of the school council came in to school early at 8.00am on Monday morning with the exciting opportunity of speaking to children from Ashcott’s link school, Yueyang Tower Primary School in Yueyang, China. Whilst the Ashcott pupils appeared slightly bleary eyed to start their school day, because of the 8 hour time difference it was 4.00pm in China and the children were just finishing their school day. The Yueyang pupils practised their English speaking, sang songs, played a traditional Chinese instrument and asked the children lots of questions about school life in England using the video link. In return the Ashcott pupils learnt many phrases in Mandarin and asked questions about school life in China. They were amazed to hear about the huge number of pupils in Yueyang Tower School and the large

class sizes of about 60 children in each class! The Ashcott children found they had lots of things in common with their Chinese friends and many shared similar interests. This was a fantastic opportunity for the children and it really helped them to get a sense of awareness of the similarities and differences of school life in China and Great Britain. The children from Ashcott proved to be excellent international ambassadors!
