8 Stone Down and Loving Life!

The 13th of July the day that changed my life... Christine first walked into slimming world on 13 July after deciding that now was the right time for her to lose weight. She had heard other people had had great results so decided to give it a try. Christine said 'I felt nervous and embarrassed before I walked in the door and the thought of being weighed in front of others filled me with dread , but I was so relieved It was so friendly and made me feel really welcome and my weight was completely confidential and that was really important to me. I kept my book with me all the time and enjoyed so much food that I thought would be banned curries , fish and chips and even roast dinners and I was still able to have my favourite crisps too.' Going to group has changed all aspects of Christine's life now enjoying clothes shopping and experimenting with different colours and loving the fact she can wear and feel comfortable in dresses now. Christine said 'now I've reached target I will still keep attending group as it's a great support network for me I'm happier healthier and and and like myself again now.' Ashton Windmill

Many people in Burnham and Highbridge are probably unaware that there is a complete windmill which is open to the public on Sunday afternoons less than a 20 minute drive away. Ashton Windmill is an 18th Century tower mill of a typical Somerset design. The windmill was used to grind corn for flour and beans for cattle food. It was built between 1766 and 1774. It last worked in 1927 and has been restored in recent years, still containing original machinery on four floors that can be seen by visitors. It lies on the road from Weare to Wedmore and is signposted from the A38 at Lower Weare. It is in the parish of Chapel Allerton and is on the ridge known as the Isle of Wedmore. It has commanding views of Cheddar Gorge, the Somerset Levels, the Polden Hills, Brent Knoll and the Somerset Coast. The windmill is situated in a prime location as the wind can reach it from any direction. The windmill is open to visitors on Sunday afternoons between Easter and the end of September. Parking is available and there are picnic facilities. Entry is free of charge although donations are very much appreciated towards the upkeep of the building.

Why Everyone Should Be Having Regular Massage Treatments

Having a regular massage is a wonderful way of looking after yourself – body, mind and spirit. For example, it can be extremely beneficial in helping to sooth tired and aching muscles, relieve knots and tension, improve circulation, increase joint flexibility and can help with both the preparation for and recovery following workouts and sporting events. The healing qualities of massage can have also have an extremely positive effect on anyone suffering from anxiety and/or depression. It can help to calm the mind, promote relaxation and improve general mood. And breathe is excited to announce that the following treatments are now available: Hot stones massage. This is a wonderful treatment where the use of heat can help to reduce pain and stiffness in muscles, providing a deeper massage but without added pressure. It is extremely restorative, relaxing and calming. Pregnancy massage. During pregnancy, the body goes through many changes, physically and emotionally. We use a pre-blended massage oil safe for use during pregnancy to help maintain the condition of the skin and reduce stretch marks. This treatment will help relieve some of the common symptoms experienced during pregnancy whilst promoting relaxation and calm. Detox and Cellulite Reduction. This treatment is wonderful for improving the tone and condition of the skin, helping to breakdown and reduce both the appearance and texture of cellulite. Focusing on the legs and buttocks, the treatment begins with body brushing, followed by a skin smoothing exfoliation. Deep tissue massage techniques are then employed to work on breaking down the cellulite using pre-blended oils designed to aid the detox process and help with skin tone. Coming soon. Gardening Jobs for April

Keep greenhouses well ventilated as your indoor plants should be growing well. Plants will need to be well-watered and looked after. Small plants and tender ones for planting out later can be put outside on fine days but they will need to come back inside at night. By all means plant up hanging baskets and containers with frost tender plants, but they will still need protection to keep them frost free or out of any cold winds. Soil temperatures should have reached above 6 degrees C by now so lots of seeds can be sown outside. Feed shrubs and roses with a good general fertiliser at the rate of one handful per plant; sprinkle this around the outside of the plant and hoe it into the soil. Plant any summer bulbs and add a handful of grit or sharp sand underneath the bulb to assist with drainage. Deadhead and foliar feed spring bulbs weekly until the foliage dies down, usually for at least six weeks. This will help the bulb to produce strong flowers for next year. Potatoes can be planted but remember they are a hungry crop. If a late frost is forecast cover any new growth with soil or protect it with fleece. Towards the end of the month French and runner beans can be sown but remember these are frost tender plants and they may need protection, even in mid-May. It’s the start of the “Hoe, hoe, hoe” season so keep on top of those weeds. For more tips why not join your local gardening group? The Burnham and District Horticultural Society meets at 7.30pm on the third Monday of each month (except December) at the Community Centre, Berrow Road. Now is a good time to join. Annual subscription is still only £5.50 per annum commencing 1st April. For information, contact Jane on 01278 789661. The next meeting is on Monday 17th April with a talk from Neil Lovesey entitled “A year at Picket Lane”. All welcome. Members of the society free, visitors £1.50. 10

Independence in your own home with Suttons Stairlifts

If you have difficulty getting up and down stairs you are not alone. The decision to install a stairlift is sometimes a difficult one to take but, when compared with the alternative of moving, or living on only one level of their home, many people have found a stairlift to be their preferred solution. Suttons Stairlifts is a family-run business dedicated to providing a fair and ethical service with a nopressure selling policy. We offer a range of new or refurbished Handicare stair lifts, either straight or curved in the Somerset and Mendip area. We also offer a rental option for straight stairlifts as well as servicing and safety checks, repairs and removals. You are also choosing an ISO Quality approved product that conforms to the ethical business practices required by the British Healthcare Trades Association. It is a popular misconception that stairlifts are fitted to the wall, they are usually fitted to the staircase itself. Most lifts will only take between 2-4 hours to install. All Handicare stairlifts have safety sensors on the power pack and footplate; these are designed to stop the lift if it meets any obstruction. If there is a power cut your stairlift will continue to operate for approximately 10 trips using the internal batteries. Handicare stairlifts offer features such as a powered swivel seat and powered folding footplate; these can make using a stairlift even easier by allowing you to operate these functions at the touch of a button.. Even if you don’t need them now, they may be something you will benefit from in the future. We will visit you to survey the staircase and conduct a user assessment leaving you the leaflets and prices so you can make the decision in your own time. Whilst stairlifts are very simple to use they are mechanical devices and do require annual servicing and maintenance. With our inclusive and comprehensive 12 or 24 month warranty and 365 day coverage you can be assured of a first-class and personal service.

The exhibition has been made possible through Arts Council England support and is part of Ignite Somerset, a wider initiative aimed at passing on digital skills to artists in all art forms. Members of the public are invited to explore the theme through the exhibition and a range of events including films and talks. Making Decisions About Hardware

When purchasing a new computer, laptop, or tablet, there is an important hardware decision one must make that will very much affect the general performance of the machine. This is the storage solution used in the new system. Ultimately, when we hunt for a new computing device, all we want is a fast, responsive solution to let us achieve our tasks with ease, and in many ways a computer is only as fast as its weakest component, which is why people should not overlook this key component. Before rushing to conclusions, let us clearly understand and summarize the different types of storage solutions used in computing. The two main areas of storage we will discuss are the memory (or RAM), and the disk storage. Memory (RAM) is the small area of temporary storage found in any modern computer system, and is necessary for them to function. This does not exclude phones and tablets. Memory, while limited in size, is incredibly fast, and so is used by applications the user is running, such as web browsers, word processors, email clients, and so on, to store temporary background data, allowing for said applications to be very responsive. While one does have the option of purchasing faster memory, the realistic performance gains are typically insignificant to most, and so, if you are going to spend more with performance in mind, put that money towards the disk storage options we will discuss below. Disk storage is your main storage to be carefully considered when purchasing a new machine, because this will determine if there will be enough space to easily fit all of your documents and pictures on the new machine. What people do not realize is that the size of your disk is no longer the only important factor, because now more than ever, the type of disk matters too. There two types of disks (or Drives) to consider are traditional Hard Drive Disks (or HDDs), and the more recent Solid State Drives (or SSDs). Put plain and simple, HDDs are much larger for your money, so if you have, for example, terabytes of data to store, then HDD is an easy choice. However, if this is not the case, then one can choose an SSD, which provides less storage space for your money, but provides massive boosts in performance that are noticeable to anyone, as boot times, application speeds, and shutdown times are strikingly faster, and issues such as freezing are brought to a minimum, if not eliminated entirely. No more waiting around for your slow computer. Sadly, most are still unaware of SSDs, because the majority of computer shops avoid selling them – they get away with this because customers are kept unaware, and so only think about disk size. Here at CPS we sell new desktop computers shipped with ultra-fast SSD solutions for no extra charge, please do not hesitate to call us for a quote on 07973 536299 and see the difference yourself.

Excellent Service from Featherbed Homecare

Originally set up as Featherbed Nannies back in July 1986 by Sally Carpenter from her home in Featherbed Lane, Clutton, near Bristol the business changed to Featherbed Homecare a few years later. Since then the agency has built up an excellent reputation for providing reliable and affordable care for people living in their own homes. With an office in Bristol and the head office at Poole in Dorset, Sally is still actively involved with the running of the agency and is dedicated to helping people live in their own homes and retain their independence for as long as possible at a reasonable cost. She believes in keeping the agency a manageable size so that clients are given the best attention at all times and provided with only the most capable and compatible carers. The agency provides care throughout the South West region, helping clients with all types of illness, from live in 24 hour care, palliative care for the terminally ill, dementia and Alzheimer’s care along with respite when someone needs temporary help. There are many care providers to choose from but what makes Featherbed special is that the carers they introduce to their clients are well known to the company. Many carers have been with them for years, all are fully trained and DBS checked and provide excellent care and companionship. An agency manager will always arrange to visit a new client in their own home before any care package is arranged so as to be sure that only the most suitable and compatible carer will be placed. Friends of Apex Park

Keep Britain Tidy – Big Clean was hailed a success by Marina Turner (Secretary to the Friends of Apex Park). "We were delighted to participate alongside so many willing volunteers who all played their bit in helping make Apex Park a cleaner place to live. I would like to thank the friends of Apex Park, Sedgemoor Model Boat Club as well as members of public who were able to spare a few hours of their time. We had fourteen volunteers and managed to collect twenty-three bags of rubbish which included a tyre, golf club, carpet and metal poles, which just shows what can be achieved when there are so many pairs of hands!"

Don’t Be Caught Out By Flytippers ….

If you are having any waste taken away by a ‘man and van’, make sure they are licenced to do so, otherwise you could pick up a fine. In Sedgemoor, one unfortunate resident didn’t check and was fined £400, via a Fixed Penalty Notice. The ‘man and van’ took away bags and domestic appliances and dumped the stuff in a field. Investigations into the flytip identified the resident, they admitted the offence of negligence, and a Fixed Penalty Notice was issued by Sedgemoor District Council. As the resident paid the fine within 10 days, it was reduced to £250. The moral to this tale is that key to cutting down the number of fly tips and Fixed Penalty Notices is for residents and businesses never paying cash or doing deals over social media to have their waste taken away. Always ask to see a waste carrier licence and get a payment receipt. Also take careful note of who takes the waste away as well as the vehicle registration number of the van. Sedgemoor District Council can also issue Fixed Penalty Notices for other specified offences – Littering (£75), Fly Posting (£75), Graffiti (£75), Dog Poo (£75); Fly Tipping (£400) , Abandoned Vehicles (£200) , Breach of Community Protection Notice (£100), Breach of Public Space Protection Orders (£100) and smoking ban offences (£50).

NSDFAS

Join us for interesting lectures on the arts, from recognised experts. Lectures are held at the 37 Club, between Woolavington and Puriton, on the first Wednesday of the month. Meetings are at 2.15pm in the winter and 7pm from May to September. Our next two lectures: Wednesday 5th April at 2.15pmStephen Richardson MA, Prinny and the excesses of regency period style. The Regency period’s eponymous figurehead, the extravagant George Frederick, Prince of Wales, Prince Regent and ultimately King George IV (Known as Prinny), was in the vanguard of new developments in architecture, decorative style and art collecting. The lecture explores the many facets of Regency architecture, interior decoration and furnishing. Wednesday 3rd May at 7pm Dr. Evelyn Silber: "Taking tea with Mackintosh". Glasgow was a centre of artistic innovation and tea rooms served as art galleries for paintings by the Glasgow Boys. In 1900 Rennie Mackintosh had the opportunity to redesign an entire room of an Ingram St. tearoom. The lecture focuses on Charles Rennie and Margaret Macdonald Mackintosh's varied and innovative work for Miss Cranston's Glasgow tearooms and also explores the tearoom phenomenon in Glasgow. Misia Sert: Julian Halsby The March lecture of the NSDFAS was given by Julian Halsby on Misia Sert “The Queen of Paris” 1872 – 1950. We heard how she was muse and patron to the artists of Paris and a pianist to the Russian Ballet. Faure described her as his best pupil. She was painted by more artists than anyone else. She is still well known in Paris, and an exhibition to her was held in 2012 although most of our audience had never heard of her. Her father was a Polish sculptor and her mother’s father had been a great cellist. The start of her life was as complicated as the rest of it as her father had an affair with a Russian lady and her mother went to St. Petersburg in the snow to try to save her marriage, gave birth to Misia, and died. She was brought up by her grandparents. When she met Thadee Natanson she set a pattern by marrying him, and eventually had three husbands rather than lovers. She and Thadee started the Revue Blanche, a magazine of the arts, music and poetry. His money made it possible to live in large country houses where she could act as hostess. Her beauty and charm were widely acclaimed. It was said that Misia didn’t care about material things, as long as she had plenty of them! Eventually she caught the eye of a vulgar press baron, Alfred Edwards, who bailed out Thadee, and she married him, but later lost him to a gorgeous young actress. Edwards died and was replaced by Jose-Maria Sert, a fiery Spanish painter who had enough cash to keep Misia in style. She continued to host most of the great artists and musicians of the time including Stravinsky and Diaghilev. She did much to help Jews in the war. One of her greatest friends was Coco Chanel, who was with her when she died in 1950.

Burnham Area Evening Flower Club

There is a welcome waiting for you at the Flower Club on Monday 24th April when we have National Demonstrator Pam Lewis coming to give us a display of flower arranging with an associated talk titled ‘The World Awakes to the Sound of Spring Flowers’ - this should be very interesting. Pam is a very talented flower arranger and is very humorous, so you will be in for a treat. The doors at St. Andrew’s Church Hall are opened at 7pm where a free cup of tea or coffee and a biscuit will be waiting. You can then browse our excellent sales table which has various flower arranging requirements including large blocks of floral foam for 75 pence and an amazing plant stall with a large variety of plants available at bargain prices! Don't forget to buy some raffle tickets as all the arrangements are raffled at the end of the evening! The demonstration commences at 7.30pm and finishes about 9.15pm.The cost for a visitor is £6.50, members are free. Annual club membership is available for £37. If you have an interest in flowers, your enjoyment is guaranteed. Tip for the Month When using floral foam (oasis), fill a container with sufficient water to completely cover the size of the block you are using. Float the foam on the top and LEAVE it, do NOT push it down in the water. If left for a few minutes it will fully absorb the water and will sink on its own. By pushing the foam into the water it causes air pockets and dry areas within the block. Once the foam has sunk, it's ready to use; do not leave it soaking too long as this causes it to crumble!

Town Criers – A Short History

As long as there has been news to share, there have been messengers to deliver it, and Town Criers were the original ‘newsmen’, finding their origins in the early Greek Empire as Spartan Runners. The first criers in Britain are thought to have made their first appearance in 1066 when news of William of Normandy’s invasion was passed from town to town by men employed to remind everybody of Harold’s authority by individuals employed to call out the King’s proclamation. As the literacy of Britain’s population remained low well into the late 19th century, people came to rely on criers as a useful way of hearing about proclamations, edicts, laws and news, as books and newspapers were generally only accessible to a small percentage of the English population. The information was usually written on paper by-passed on to the general public by the Town Crier – the first talking newspaper. Oyez, Oyez, Oyez, roughly translated as hark or listen, became a familiar call in town squares, markets and public meeting places all over Britain - a summons for the townspeople to gather and listen to news of plague, victories in far off lands, royal births and deaths by execution. The Town Crier would read a proclamation, usually at the door of the local inn, then nail it to the doorpost of the inn. The result of this tradition has been the naming of newspapers “The Post”, the expression posting a notice, the post office, and posting a message on the internet. Their position became so important, that harming a Town Crier was turned into a treasonable offence, and even in the 21st century these ancient laws are still supposed to guard them against heckling. As literacy spread, the Town Crier’s role was eventually superseded by newspapers and modern media, but there are lots of towns that still retain the service of its Town Crier to enhance the traditional character of their town and promote tourism.

Beautiful Burnham

Just off the M5 motorway, At junction 22, Lies the jewel in Sedgemoor's crown, With lots to see and do. You can stroll along the esplanade, And breathe our 'air like wine' as described by John Betjeman as he explored the old branch line. Gaze upon the wide horizon, See the yacht club hoist their sails, As they traverse Turner's inspiration, With the view across to Wales. Then take a little detour And enjoy Marine Cove's flowers, A perfect tranquil sun kissed spot, To while away the hours. If excitement's more for you, Then why not pay a call To our very own Ritz cinema With great artwork on the wall. Speaking of the spray jam, The art trail's worth a trip, And after all that walking Why not enjoy a little sip At a friendly local hostelry Or have a fresh cream tea, A plate of piping fish and chips And a bag of fudge (or three). There are lots of lovely little shops, Selling everything you desire,And four welcoming churchs, If your needs are rather higher. So come and visit Burnham, At any time of year, And find our greatest treasure,
