When my father established Kingfisher in 1986 there was one predominant reason that he wanted to set up on his own. Whilst he loved his job, he hated the sales methods of the company he worked for. He was successful, but he never put pressure on himself by setting ‘sales targets’ that, in reality, would simply mean his putting pressure on customers. Instead he would give advice, answer questions honestly, quote a fair price and then leave customers to make up their own minds in their own time.
That exact same philosophy still guides us today. Like my father, I love the job. I love meeting people. I love it that we are still a family firm with family values. And I love the fact that everybody who works for us feels the same way. We consider our customers to be friends and we positively enjoy going the ‘extra mile’ for them. That so much of our business is from referrals and recommendations is a vindication of our approach. If you need windows, doors, a conservatory or cladding and you like the sound of the way we work, do please call us or pop in and see us. We’d love to meet you and help you in any way we can.

COMMUNITY NOTICE BOARD
Summer can be a good time to sell
SOME vendors feel that if they have ‘missed’ the spring market, they should wait until September, when the children have gone back to school, before putting their property on the market. CJ Hole’s Edward Creswick discusses why there are solid reasons for marketing your home during the summer. “Firstly, your house is likely to look its very best. The bright days and long evenings mean that your accommodation will look light and airy, and any views from the house will be accentuated. Your garden will be in full bloom and adds real value to the purchaser’s perception of your home – they won’t just be looking at the rooms. If it’s a family house, children’s play equipment in the garden can only make the house feel more like a home – a real hot button for the family buyer. Longer evenings also mean that the opportunity for positive viewings is extended, as partners can view together. Serious buyers don’t let holidays get in their way and are sometimes frustrated at the reduction in choice, as other sellers withdraw their homes. Those with children may be under some pressure to secure a property before the new school year starts and, as a result, could be prepared to pay a high price in return for a swift completion date. So, if you are considering the possibility of selling, why not help us supply the demand we are experiencing, by contacting us on: 01278 780000.”

Charlotte's Story
At the beginning of this year we decided to book our first family holiday. The thought of taking my girls away for the 1st time was so exciting, however I soon started to feel anxious at the thought of buying summer clothes and getting in the pool with them. It was at this point I decided I needed to do something about my weight and lack of body confidence. At the end of January 2017 I decided to join a slimming world group on Monday mornings with Yasmin as a consultant. I instantly felt welcomed and my weight loss journey began. I love turning up to group every week and listening to how people's weeks have gone and sharing recipes. As a result of this, I'm now 4st 9.5lb lighter, down 4 dress sizes and loving the new me. Sticking to plan is very easy for me despite having two young children. They both enjoy the majority of slimming world meals I cook but most recipes can be tweaked a little to suit everyone in my family. Two of our family favourite recipes are the spaghetti bolognaise and the "takeaway" KFC chicken. The variety of food is incredible which means it never gets boring and you never feel like your missing out on great food. I'm still on my journey but with the help of Yasmin and the other members of the group I know I can achieve my goal. If you would like to find out more we meet at The Old Court House, Jaycroft Road, Burnham on Sea, on Mondays at 10am and 12 noon. You can contact: Yasmin on 07397863084.

Beware: your barbecue could cause a blaze Enjoy that summer barbecue but take care to not start a fire by discarding the ashes into your rubbish bin or black sacks, Somerset Waste Partnership is warning. Drench ashes with water or let them cool completely to avoid a rubbish fire threatening your home and family or causing a blaze in a waste truck or at a landfill site. The last major landfill fire in Somerset took days to put out, while across the UK, people have died in fires that began in rubbish bins. It is not just barbecue coals, never add these danger items to your rubbish: • hot ash or part-burned materials from domestic or garden fires or barbecues • used portable barbeques whose charcoal may not be completely cold • household or vehicle batteries that may short out or cause sparks • broken glass, which not carefully wrapped or bagged, could act as a magnifying lens • aerosols which may get hot or be pierced during the collection and landfill process. The advice is simple in each case: • Let ash and portable barbecues completely cool, or fully damp down with water. • Recycle vehicle batteries through any one of Somerset’s 16 recycling sites. • Take household batteries to recycling sites or high street stores that collect them. • Carefully wrap and bag broken glass, which should also never go in recycling boxes. • Use up aerosols completely, do not squash, and then add them to recycling boxes. A SWP spokesperson said: “It is simple to stay safe with rubbish and prevent fires. Fully damp down the barbecue and think through the risks so you do not put your loved ones in danger.” For more about what to recycle, where and how, visit: www.somersetwaste.gov.uk

Music be the food of life, play on!
As a very powerful art form, music stirs the human spirit. Nobody knows how or why, but no other animal seems to enjoy music at a conscious level or makes music for sheer pleasure. It also happens to be good for your general health and well-being. So why not come and join The Burnham and Highbridge Choral Society on Thursday evenings during September - May at 7.30pm in the Methodist Church Hall, College Street, Burnham-on-Sea, TA8 1AS. We're a friendly group of people who enjoy singing various types of choral music which, as our repertoire grows, includes some more modern pieces. We're a mixed choir, so men and women are welcome. Is the Ritz cinema still standing strong?
As an avid film fan, I can say that a cinema in a town can go a long way in the right in place, but is Burnham’s best still shining bright? I love going to the cinema myself, and the Ritz’s service is definitely battling with the larger chains. Its snug seats, three screens to indulge in watching and polite staff, sell the cinema itself. So why would this loving, independent cinema be falling short of its potential? The truth is, the Ritz is a wonderful independent cinema we should be saving. However, its problem holds in its customers - or lack of them thereof. Film is as big a part of our society as ever today, with remakes and sequels surpassing box office brilliance each day; it’s just that not enough of us are still storming to the silver-screen and, furthermore, would rather wait for the fan favourite films on their own TV, at home - whether through Netflix, DVD or from services such as Apple’s itunes. This is not a bad thing, I enjoy watching films from the comfort of my own home often and I have to admit that I’d rather catch some on TV than paying full price. There are many disadvantages for deciding on the cinema though, which I have to admit. Such as the crackling crisp cruncher to your left and the gaggle of the girls’ night out, so there are better ways to enjoy the latest burning blockbuster. Yet at Burnham cinema, most of these irritations are left for the multiplex mega-cinemas, as their cosy, yet impressive rooms give the average cinemagoer ample choosing for the perfect view, little disruptions and a price you can’t fault for £4 a ticket - almost half the price of its dominating contenders, Odeon and Cineworld! The only thing you need to worry about when walking to the Ritz is, “What do I want to see?” So is the Ritz cinema worth saving? Undoubtedly. Be it a Sunday morning or a Friday night film, they’ll always welcome you with a warm smile and always appreciate your support for such a unique and neighbourly cinema. They just need your help for it to happen, and I’ll see you there too! BEN YOUD – King Alfred School Student – local article competition winner

Working in Partnership
Did you buy your last home with your head or your heart? Recent research by Gocompare.com has Developing a good working partnership with your estate agent is beneficial when selling your home. After all, both parties ultimately have a mutual interest: to get you moving! Estate agents in general tend to be a personable bunch – speaking to buyers and sellers day-in-dayout encourages them to be gregarious and friendly. These open communication channels enable clients to draw on agents’ expertise and professional guidance. This is particularly clear when it comes to viewings. “We understand that it can be hard to put your home up to scrutiny,” says Andrew Stoppani of Westcoast Properties in Burnham-on-Sea. “Accustomed to making recommendations around maximising floor space, getting rid of clutter and storing nicknacks out of sight, we can also suggest little touches to support staging your home to make the most of viewings. It’s important that potential purchasers can move around easily.” Prior to viewings, make sure that your agent has keys and is aware of any alarm codes. Also brief them on running costs and less-obvious factors like broadband speeds; bringing them into the loop on any aspects of your home that people would benefit from means that they can explain these as they show buyers around. “Whilst we are of course trained to spot potential in the building itself, being aware of extra details that can’t actually be seen allows us to give a property an advantage,” Andrew adds. Fostering a positive relationship with your property professional also ensures that you get honest feedback after viewings. It can be difficult to accept that the home that you’ve been perfectly happy in for years may not tick everyone’s box. “Getting feedback after every viewing is essential,” Andrew agrees. “Whilst some factors can’t be changed, we can make suggestions to vendors gauged on what viewers have said, and discuss any concerns viewers have in more depth. Quality feedback benefits everyone, providing it is delivered in a sensitive and diplomatic manner. Essentially, a high calibre estate agent understands that communication is key when it comes to selling property.” www.westcoast-properties.co.uk

Can’t get fibre broadband – Have you considered 4G?
If you are one of many who are unable to get fast broadband at home, or worse yet, none whatsoever, and believe there is simply no hope for decent speeds, then you may be glad to hear there is another potential option for you to achieve fast internet at home. In today’s era of online video streaming, large file downloads, and an increasing application of social media, the demand for faster internet speeds at home continues to grow in order to avoid common symptoms of slow broadband, including drop-outs, long delays when web browsing, streaming quality dips, and constant buffering. In terms of latency and stability, nothing can beat a fixed broadband line if this is an option for your property, particularly if fibre is available. However, what about those who are stuck with unacceptably slow speeds on their fixed line, and have no option to upgrade to faster packages simply due to their location? It may seem like all hope is lost, but by utilizing a new method to get online, fast speeds could still be an option for your premises. It does not go unknown that over the past decade, mobile device networking has quickly transformed from a once-considered new trend, to a worldwide hit, enabling people to stay connected wherever they go. Due to demand, cellular networks have grown to provide superfast speeds in some areas, often 20mb/s or faster – easily enough to support the most intense internet applications, including HD video streaming – this is called the 4G network. Many are unaware that access to mobile networks is no longer restricted to phones and tablets, but can be utilized to provide home internet services. This is done by purchasing a 4G modem box, placing it somewhere appropriate in your home, and installing data SIMs into the modem, allowing it to provide fast 4G internet speeds to any device in your home wirelessly, not unlike a router. As to avoid an undesirable end-result, a careful vetting process should be undertaken, ensuring your location is capable of a fast and stable connection to a nearby 4G network mast. If you are unable to achieve fast speeds via your fixed line and wish to investigate the 4G route, please see our advert on this page, so we may survey your situation and set everything up for you.
