ChriStmAS LightS SwitCh On 25th november: Burnham-on-Sea's town centre Christmas lights will be switched on during a day of special entertainment on Saturday 25th November. Local groups, bands and choirs will be performing through the afternoon from 2pm - 7pm on a stage set up outside the Victoria Hotel in Victoria Street. BBC Points West presenter David Garmston will be switching on the lights at 6pm, accompanied by local dignitaries. The 'BOS Factor' talent competition will also be returning, offering a chance for local up-andcoming performers to take the stage in front of the crowds. Alongside festive-themed stalls and children's rides, there will also be a chance to meet some very special Christmas donkeys! Organised by Burnhamon-Sea Chamber of Trade, the event will get the festive season in the town centre off to a super start. More details about the Chamber and its activities to promote our town centre are available online at http://www.burnhamonseachamber.org/ The Chamber is also keen to see Burnham's local shops promote themselves on Saturday 2nd December for 'Small Business Saturday' and we will be supporting them with promotion.

SCOut POSt 1st – 14th december: 1st Huntspill & Highbridge Scout Group have their Christmas card delivery service across the Burnham area. Cards are delivered to Pawlett, East/West Huntspill, Highbridge, Burnham-on-Sea & Berrow at a cost of just 20p per card. The collection boxes are out in various shops & locations across the above areas. Cards can be put into the box with money (20p per card). All will be delivered by Christmas Day by our group members, parents, committee and other willing volunteers. Every penny raised goes into the group funds which enables us to heat & carry out general maintenance to our headquarters in Coronation Road, Highbridge and to maintain and replace essential equipment for use camping & out & about on scouting activities.

FriendS OF BurnhAm hOSPitAL 1st & 9th december: We would like to thank all of our supporters who have helped us raise funds throughout 2017. Thanks also to our volunteer pool that have helped us at the many events we have held. Only two more events for 2017. On Friday 1st December we are back by popular demand at the Methodist Church in College Street for our very popular Christmas Music Concert, entry is free but by ticket only. For free tickets you can contact Bernie on 01278 785727. Entertainment is from Impromptu Plus, U3A and soloists. Doors open 6.30pm for a 7pm start. There will be a raffle, refreshments and Retiring collection; hope to see you there. The funds raised will be split between the church and friends. CArOLS By CAndLeLight 2nd december: 'Siobhan Johnson Singers' present their annual Christmas 'Carols by Candlelight' concert in aid of 'In Charley's Memory' on Saturday 2nd December, 6.30pm at St. Andrew's Church, Burnham-on-Sea. Burnham Youth Choir and Burnham on Song will be amongst those performing, with some warming and delightful Christmas songs including the youth choir leading the congregation with their traditional Christmas performance of '12 days of Christmas’. The workshop will be run by Michelle Graham-McMorrow, a professional facilitator and experienced improviser. 2nd – 3rd december: Burnham's rescue hovercraft charity BARB Search & Rescue will be welcoming back Santa Claus on Saturday 2nd December and Sunday 3rd December. Father Christmas will be setting up his traditional grotto at the hovercraft station on The South Esplanade and welcoming families from 10am - 4pm on both days (with a break from 12.30pm - 1pm). Entry will be just £4 with a present, with all proceeds going to BARB's life-saving work. There will also be festive stalls and a bumper raffle. BARB is also currently seeking new volunteer crewmembers who are available in the daytime to join its team. Full training and equipment is available. Light uP A LiFe 4th december: At this time of year many people’s thoughts will be turning towards the past, and memories of someone special. Over the years St. Margaret’s Hospice has devoted itself to helping people honour the memories of departed friends and family with a series of uplifting services of remembrance. BurnhAm And highBridge gAtewAy CLuB 7th & 14th december: Club members were delighted when the Dutch Band played for them on 5th November at The Princess Theatre and Arts Centre. The band was on one of their bi-annual visits to Burnham to see the local carnival, and received the usual enthusiastic response from the Gateway Club members. The hall echoed with the sound of all the instruments and members cheering! Over £200 was raised from raffles by the band for the Gateway Club. The next events will be on the 7th December - Club Christmas meal at the Oaktree Arena, and 14th December - Burnham Town Band will be playing Christmas carols for members at the Burnham Area Youth Centre.

dOnAte yOur unwAnted winter FueL PAymentS tO â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Surviving winterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; With the arrival of the colder months, Somerset Community Foundation have launched their eighth Surviving Winter fundraising campaign. Surviving Winter was started in 2010 by people who wanted to donate their Winter Fuel Payment to help others in Somerset less fortunate than themselves, and last year attracted donations of unwanted Winter Fuel payments from over 480 pensioners in Somerset, 28% of whom had never contributed to the Surviving Winter campaign before. Case Study: Surviving Winter has connected Mrs. Watts to a case worker from Knightstone Housing. She had a fall

3 years ago and suffered an injury to her shoulder, which continuously causes her a lot of pain. She also suffers from osteoporosis in her knee, septic arthritis and a heart condition. During the winter months Mrs. Watts has the heating on for most of the day and will sit next to the radiator. The cold really affects her joints so she wears long johns under her trousers to keep warm. Mrs. Watts used a grant from Surviving Winter to purchase a warm pair of trousers and a long cardigan to wear when she does the weekly shop on a Thursday. Her case worker also connected her with many other resources in the community to help warm and healthy.

There are three main reasons to upgrade a computer – first is to stay secure, so valued data is not stolen by malicious infections or simply lost due to hardware failure. Second is to maintain usability and performance, so the user is not kept waiting when performing simple tasks. Third is to take advantage of the latest operating system features and hardware standards, such as faster usb speeds. If a computer is years old, and very slow, this alone is a reason to consider purchasing a new machine, as typically, upgrading individual components does not meaningfully tackle this issue. If unable to meet upgrade requirements for the latest operating system (Windows 10), this is another major concern, as by using old software, security may be weaker, increasing risk of infection. If experiencing random crashes, it is often a costly process to determine and resolve the problematic hardware or software, making it arguably more costeffective to simply upgrade to a new computer. If a machine is very noisy or makes ticking noises, then the hardware is potentially soon to fail, so it is important, for

the safety of valuable data, to upgrade soon to avoid data loss. If portability is a priority, one may choose to purchase a laptop, or a tablet. Laptops have more powerful hardware, so are better for heavy usage and multitasking, and allow the user to perform all the same tasks as on a desktop. However, tablets can be purchased for less, and are incredibly lightweight and easy to carry around. Laptops are superior for heavy work use, due to easier typing, and larger storage capacity. Tablets, with their portability, are more suited for checking social media, reading e-books, and getting the latest news on-the-go, and if used sensibly, have longer battery life. This decision comes down to preference, but tablets should not be considered a full desktop alternative due to their limited functionality. Tidy up sheds and greenhouses and wash any dirty pots and containers. Fruit trees like apples and pears can be pruned. Remove any dead and damaged growth plus any crossing branches. Do not prune any stone fruits like plums and cherries, prune these during the warmer months. Sow broad beans, early summer cabbage, onions and shallots under cover for planting out later, with some protection such as cloches or fleece. Continue planting new shrubs and trees when the weather is mild. Plan ahead for next year by ordering new seeds, potatoes, plants, and composts and fertilisers. There is no monthly meeting in December so Merry Christmas and Happy New Year and look forward to seeing you on January 15th 2018 when we will be considering ‘Gardening Trends’.
