Louise's Story

Louise joined Thursday evening Slimming World at Burnham Infant School in January 2015 and achieved an amazing 5 stone 11 pounds weight loss in 75 weeks in June 2016 in 75. Louise joined Slimming after her friends recommended their local slimming world group which they attended at Burnham Infant School. This is Louise's own story. I decided to join slimming in January 2015 after looking at my Christmas photos that which made me feel very upset at the way I looked. I've always been over weight and never seen it as being a problem. I've been in a relationship for 10 years and I guess I was enjoying life and was ok the way I was. I always used to dream of what it would be like to be slim, I always had lots of lovely comments on my new teeth or my pretty face, it felt like it was compensation for being overweight. I joined Slimming World with a friend, I was surprised how quick I lost weight, I could eat unlimited amounts of foods without feeling hungry and still enjoy life and to still have a great weight loss on the scales. I joined the gym and this has also helped with inch loss. My confidence started to grow when I could see I was losing the weight and I wasn't as embarrassed at the gym anymore, like I was at the beginning. My mum was selling my clothes for me as I slimmed out of my clothes, that was the best feeling for me and going out buying clothes from shops and being able to find my size on the rail and shopping with my friends. I wouldn't have believed anyone who told me this time last year I would be wearing a size 12/14 clothes. I still see myself being over weight and find it hard to accept compliments about how amazing I look, but still don't believe it myself. I have Slimming World to thank as food optimising is great and love the group support.

COMMUNITY NOTICE BOARD

Gardening Jobs for February

• Light levels will improve greatly at this time but gardening tasks will still be weather related. • Finish off your plans for sowing and planting and purchase new seeds if required. • New trees and shrubs can still be planted if the soil conditions are suitable. • Complete the pruning of fruit trees and bushes and give them a dressing of a high potash fertiliser like sulphate of potash. Giving them a mulch of compost or well-rotted manure is also a good idea. • Make sure lawn mowers and other garden machinery are in good working order for the busy times ahead. • If they are not too wet, lawns can be spiked or forked to improve their drainage. • Inside a greenhouse, with protection, try starting shallots, onion sets, broad beans and peas by sowing them in small pots or modules. Keep some fleece handy for covering them on cold nights. Only sow tomatoes, aubergines and peppers if you can provide heat after seed germination. If you have no heat available, wait until next month to sow. • Prune summer flowering clematis right back to a pair of strong buds. Make a start with rose pruning. • Make sure everything is clean and tidy including pots and containers. Bring bags of compost inside to warm up. On Monday 20th February at 7.30pm the Horticultural Society is holding a special talk on ‘Growing Summer Vegetables’ by Graham and Jane Wagstaff. They are both key members of the National Vegetable Society and have recently appeared in a BBC programme about the Tatton Park Flower Show. They give talks to audiences throughout the country and attend many RHS shows. This talk is at the Masonic Hall, Burnham-on-Sea and is free to members of the Burnham-on-Sea and District Horticultural Society. Tickets for non-members are priced at £2. If you require any tickets for this event (members or non-members), please contact David Bryant on 01278 788058 or John Chinn on 01278 780584.

This Could Save Your Life

A lifesaving defibrillator has been installed in Apex Park, Highbridge. The equipment – an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) - is available for use on someone having a suspected heart attack. It has been installed on the wall of the park’s office building in the Marine Drive car park. The equipment is housed in an eye-catching tamper-proof, yellow box. Crucially, the defibrillator fitted is a speaking-instructional device meaning no medical training is required to use it. In the event of an emergency, people should call 999 and the emergency call handler will advise of the AED’s location (if the caller is not already aware of it). The call handler will then provide a code to access the equipment from its cabinet at the same time as they dispatch an ambulance. The call handler and the device then talk the user through what to do. Burnham-on-Sea Harriers who manage the Burnham and Highbridge Parkrun, which takes place in Apex Park every Saturday morning, were granted funds from Burnham and Highbridge Town Council, and received generous donations from the Burnham and Highbridge Parkrun community, to buy the AED and its special storage cabinet. Reg Huxtable from Burnham and Highbridge Parkrun said, “When we originally toyed with the idea of an AED in Apex Park and the costs involved it was somewhat daunting. However, once we started the ball rolling the extreme generosity of our councils and the people of Burnham and Highbridge Parkrun became very apparent, resulting in completion of this successful project.” Sedgemoor District Council paid for the equipment to be installed. A spokesman said, “Defibrillators are vital pieces of equipment that can save someone’s life. This addition to the park is potentially of massive benefit to Apex’s many users and the surrounding area. We would like to thank the Burnham and Highbridge Parkrun team for raising the funds for the defibrillator.”

Health Walks Marine Cove

The December lecture of NSDFAS titled Oh, I do Like to be Beside the Seaside, was given by Dr. Libby Horner. She described how Margate and Brighton were the first seaside spas. George, Prince of Wales, who later became Prince Reagent in 1811 made Brighton popular. He began building a retreat in 1787 - the Brighton Pavilion, which developed as a fantastical seaside palace when he became King George IV. The development of the railways made other parts more accessible. The GWR which ran its first trains in 1878 to Plymouth, made Devon and Cornwall popular destinations. Blackpool grew to be the first real seaside town as each cotton mill had a different week’s holiday to service the machinery. Dickens is one of the first to mention seaside holidays in his writings and was known to holiday at Broadstairs.

A spokesman for Sedgemoor District Council said, “We are often asked by businesses where they can access advice on a range of subjects from funding and marketing to keeping up-to-date with digital advances. We have had excellent feedback from those who attended the previous workshops so we are really pleased to be able to run them again in 2017.” Kate Doodson, from Cosmic, said her company was delighted to be supporting businesses for a second year and helping them to improve their business knowledge and digital skills. “Digital skills are fast becoming critical to business success and programmes of activity like Get Business Get Digital, are essential to create thriving rural economies,” she said. “Businesses who engage in our programmes find them a great, friendly and effective way to learn new skills.” Cosmic will be delivering a variety of business and digital workshops, suitable for all businesses at all levels and all free for business owners to attend. There will also be free 1-2-1 business and digital advisory sessions available. One of many business people who received digital support through Get Business Get Digital during 2016 was Kate Doig of Firewolf Glass who said, “Cosmic were very professional in their approach to the mentoring and advice sessions. They were friendly and approachable, organised, very knowledgeable and able to give advice and guidance clearly and in a way that could be easily understood. They put together clear and structured objectives which addressed the needs of my business.” 1-2-1 mentoring sessions are available to book now by calling 0845 094 6108 to talk to a member of the projects team or by emailing Alicia on alicia@cosmic.org.uk Events for 2017 are already on the website and you can register an interest to be kept informed by subscribing to the mailing list: www.getbusinessgetdigital.co.uk/events For any further information please do not hesitate to contact us on 0845 094 6108 or alicia@cosmic.org.uk

We organise everything, supplying the questions, quizmaster, snacks and the raffle. All the good cause has to do is promote the quiz within their group, supply a few raffle prizes and enjoy the evening. Our target for 2017 is £7000 - so if your group or charity wants to share in this please contact us ASAP as the dates book quickly. You may reserve up to three dates through the year." More Updates Coming for Windows 10

Good news for Windows 10 users out there - Microsoft is planning to release another major Windows 10 update around April 2017 that they are calling the “Creators Update”, a suitable name for an update that is to largely provide users new ways to create different kinds of 3D content, sporting a revised version of Microsoft Paint, and even integrates VR (Virtual reality) Importantly, despite its name, the update also brings a massive number of small additions and changes to Windows 10 – too many to list here – so let’s look at some of the more noticeable changes. General customization seems to be a large focus, such as providing the option to completely hide the start menu apps list; this is nice for users who only wish to use the start menu for power options and tiles, with minimal clutter. There will be more Wifi settings also, such as the option to set times to automatically enable/ disable Wifi, which is a nice feature for those looking for complete automation and battery saving. Advanced users will be happy to know the registry editor now will have an address bar, similar to Windows Explorer – an unexpected but welcome change. For avid laptop users, there will now be more advanced trackpad gesture options, enabling users to swiftly navigate around their Windows 10 device easier than ever. The Action Center and Windows Defender are also being re-vamped to increase usability. An exciting addition called the “People Bar” is a creative new way to easily Skype or email friends, using an easy interface which integrates into the taskbar. We look forward to learning more about this closer to Spring 2017.For more information on the update, visit www.tinyurl.com/creators-update. To get the update when realised, ensure your Windows 10 machine is left on to automatically download it, otherwise you can manually scan for updates by opening the start menu, clicking the settings cog, selecting “Update & Security”, then clicking “Check for updates”. A common problem we find with computers that are rarely powered on is they miss important updates which causes many issues, so at least once a week, try and give your machine time to update itself or better yet, manually check as I described above. Should you require any help with your business or home computer, please contact me on 07973 536299 or neil@e-cps.co.uk Neil Buzzard, Director, Computer Problem Solutions Ltd

Excellent Service from Featherbed Homecare

Originally set up as Featherbed Nannies back in July 1986 by Sally Carpenter from her home in Featherbed Lane, Clutton, near Bristol the business changed to Featherbed Homecare a few years later. Since then the agency has built up an excellent reputation for providing reliable and affordable care for people living in their own homes. With an office in Bristol and the head office at Poole in Dorset, Sally is still actively involved with the running of the agency and is dedicated to helping people live in their own homes and retain their independence for as long as possible at a reasonable cost. She believes in keeping the agency a manageable size so that clients are given the best attention at all times and provided with only the most capable and compatible carers. The agency provides care throughout the South West region, helping clients with all types of illness, from live in 24 hour care, palliative care for the terminally ill, dementia and Alzheimer’s care along with respite when someone needs temporary help. There are many care providers to choose from but what makes Featherbed special is that the carers they introduce to their clients are well known to the company. Many carers have been with them for years, all are fully trained and DBS checked and provide excellent care and companionship. An agency manager will always arrange to visit a new client in their own home before any care package is arranged so as to be sure that only the most suitable and compatible carer will be placed. For further information or an agency brochure please contact 01934 757037 or Freephone 0800 1114885 www.featherbedhomecare.co.uk
