Somerset Road Safety - Winter Driving Tips
In the dark winter months it is really important that your car is prepared for wet and sometimes icy weather conditions to minimise the risk of being involved in a crash. Whilst it's impossible to remove all risk when you're driving, if you follow the tips below you will keep those risks to a minimum.
• • • • • • • • • • •
Ensure all tyres, including the spare, are correctly inflated (see your owner’s manual for the correct pressures for your vehicle). Check tyre tread depths; 1.6mm is the legal minimum for cars but 3mm is advisable. Ensure you carry an effective ice scraper and de-icer. De-ice/mist windows completely before driving. Ensure the windscreen washer bottle is full with the correct mix of screen wash, preferably one designed to cope with minus temperatures. Check wiper blades are in good condition. Top up the anti-freeze in the cooling system (in winter you need a mix of 50-50 anti-freeze and water). Make sure your battery is in good condition. Make sure all your lights are working, including indicators. Make sure your mobile phone is fully charged. Check your vehicle is in good running order
Consider putting a winter emergency bag in the boot; contents suggestions include: • • • • • • • • • •

Gardening Jobs for January
January is a good time to have a good tidy up and general check on gardening equipment just to make sure everything is ready and prepared before the busy months ahead. The planning for this year should have been done, as well as purchasing new seeds, fertilisers and composts for future sowing and planting. • When the soil is not too wet or frozen you can work outdoors, and trees and shrubs can be planted. If conditions are not right, new plants can be heeled into a shallow trench dug in a sheltered part of the garden. These heeled-in plants can be left for several weeks, if necessary, until soil conditions improve. • If you have any early bulbs growing in pots these can be brought indoors, but try and keep them cool for a week or two. • Only sow seeds indoors if you can provide adequate heat for growing on the emerging seedlings. If you have no heat, wait until later before indoor sowing. • Seed potatoes will be available this month. Stand your seed potatoes upright in trays or egg boxes with the rose end uppermost in a light frost-free place. They can then be planted from the end of March onwards. • Consider warming up a patch of soil outside for early sowing or planting later on. You can use plastic sheeting, strong fleece or cloches as a covering. For more tips, why not join your local gardening group? Burnham-on-Sea and District Horticultural Society meets at 7.30pm on the third Monday of each month (except December) at the Community Centre, Berrow Road. The next meeting is on Monday 16th January 2017 when there will be a talk from Head Gardener, James Cross on the development of the Bishop’s Palace Garden in Wells. All welcome. Members of the Society free, visitors £1.50.The Horticultural Society is holding a special talk on “Growing Summer Vegetables” by Graham and Jane Wagstaff. They are both key members of the National Vegetable Society and have recently appeared in a BBC programme about the Tatton Park Flower Show. They give talks to audiences throughout the country and attend many RHS shows. This talk is at the Masonic Hall, Burnham-on-Sea on Monday 20th February at 7.30pm and is free to members of the Burnham-on-Sea and District Horticultural Society. Tickets for non-members are priced at £2. If you require any tickets for this event (members or non-members), please contact David Bryant on 01278788058 or John Chinn on 01278 780584.

Have you heard about the ‘Men’s Shed’ idea? It’s an idea whereby a group of men learn new skills, get advice and sit and have a chat. It is a nationally recognised scheme, and staff at Sedgemoor District Council are keen to find out if there is interest in setting up a ‘Sedgemoor Shedder’s Group’ in either Burnham-on-Sea or Highbridge. A Men’s Shed is a larger version of any garden shed – a place where he feels at home and pursues practical interests. In schemes which are already set up, members share the tools and resources they need to work on projects. They are places of skill-sharing and informal learning, of individual pursuits and community projects, and set up a network of relationships between the members. John, an established ‘shedder’ from another group said, “Fixing, making and re-using materials has given me the motivation to improve my rented home. It improved my mental state and it gave me hope.” A Shed’s activities usually involve making or mending in wood (e.g. carpentry, joinery, turning, carving, whittling, marquetry, furniture renovation) but may include metalworking (milling, sheet metal, welding, etc.) bike repair, gardening, electronics, tool renovation, boat renovation, model engineering (model railways, planes) and even building a car! Be Aware of a Council Tax Scam
“I can lower your Council Tax banding if you pay me” May sound like a great offer, but it is a scam. You can find out if your band can be lowered, for free. Sedgemoor District Council is warning residents to be aware of Council Tax scammers, who may offer you deals to reduce monthly payments or reduce your banding. Council Tax scammers are very prevalent at the moment due to bills recently being delivered to residents across the district. One current scam that has been bought to the district council’s attention is from a company claiming to be called ‘Claimers’, who call on behalf of Sedgemoor District Council and ask a fee to lower your Council Tax banding. Council Tax bands are set by the national Valuation Office Agency and can only be changed under certain conditions. Details can be found at www.gov. uk/council-tax-appeals - you will not be charged for the service. Many scams are highlighted to the Council and we
try to inform residents when they are brought to our attention because ultimately it is residents who may lose out. If you are struggling to pay your Council Tax bill and need help, speak with a member of the Council Tax Team on 0300 303 7800 who will be able to offer help and advice. If you are unsure of who you are talking to and instinct tells you something is not quite right, hang up, call 0300 303 7800 and check with a customer advisor whether the name of the person who called you really does exist. Our friendly staff in Sedgemoor Direct, are aware of a high number of scam calls to residents and are happy to help you. Whatever you do, do not give your bank details over the phone unless you have called into Sedgemoor District Council. If you have given over personal details, we would advise you to call the Police straight away on 101 and report the matter as an identity theft scam. T The Police will also direct you to the Action Fraud helpline on 0300 123 2040.

Money Saving Tips Online
Today I want to share with you some of my favourite tips for saving money while shopping online that many people are still unaware of. Due to pure convenience, most families I talk to do their shopping online nowadays, particularly for electronics, toys, and seasonal gifts, but without using the methods below, people are paying more than they need to. A simple and effective way to make online shopping cheaper is to use websites like Quidco (www.quidco. co.uk) or TopCashback (www.topcashback.co.uk) when shopping from eligible websites. This is easily achieved by creating a free account on either website (or both, if you’re a true money-saver), searching for the website you want to purchase from (e.g. “Amazon”) to see the cashback you could receive from that site, then simply clicking the big button to travel there, and shop like you normally would, but with free cashback after ordering. This works for many types of websites, including insurance companies. Before I continue – I have to give another small shout-out to sites like SkyScanner (www.skyscanner.net) and Trivago (www.trivago.co.uk) that help find cheaper flights and hotels. For those who missed my article last year, I have recommended a website called Flubit (www.flubit.com) before, and because it is still one of my favourite money-saving tips, I would like to again remind people that if you find a product on Amazon (or many more sites) that you want, give the web address (the “www” part at the top) to Flubit and instantly save money by getting a cheaper deal. Lastly, a very useful money-saving tool I want to mention is a nifty browser add-on/extension, which only works with Firefox and Google Chrome. This well-received add-on is called “Coupons at Checkout” and what this does is wait until you are at the checkout page of a website, and then informs you of working coupons to use before you buy, instantly saving money! It even has a function that automatically tries all known coupons and finds the very cheapest option for your basket. Grab it at www.couponfollow.com/checkout today. Please get in touch should you need any help with business or home computers. Neil Buzzard, Tel: 07973 536299, Computer Problem Solutions Ltd

Excellent Service from Featherbed Homecare
Originally set up as Featherbed Nannies back in July 1986 by Sally Carpenter from her home in Featherbed Lane, Clutton, near Bristol the business changed to Featherbed Homecare a few years later. Since then the agency has built up an excellent reputation for providing reliable and affordable care for people living in their own homes. With an office in Bristol and the head office at Poole in Dorset, Sally is still actively involved with the running of the agency and is dedicated to helping people live in their own homes and retain their independence for as long as possible at a reasonable cost. She believes in keeping the agency a manageable size so that clients are given the best attention at all times and provided with only the most capable and compatible carers. The agency provides care throughout the South West region, helping clients with all types of illness, from live in 24 hour care, palliative care for the terminally ill, dementia and Alzheimer’s care along with respite when someone needs temporary help. There are many care providers to choose from but what makes Featherbed special is that the carers they introduce to their clients are well known to the company. Many carers have been with them for years, all are fully trained and DBS checked and provide excellent care and companionship. An agency manager will always arrange to visit a new client in their own home before any care package is arranged so as to be sure that only the most suitable and compatible carer will be placed. Be Ready For The Freeze
The winter of 2016-17 is predicted to be a cold one. Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service are encouraging you to check your chimney is clean, safe and swept in preparation. Chimney fires can cause serious structural damage to a home, with the risks being even greater if the property has a thatched roof. The damage is not only fire based but also the dirt and smell left from all the soot and smoke, which would affect your personal property. Chimneys need to be dirt free to allow the free passage of dangerous combustion gasses, so regular cleaning will remove soot and creosote, and help prevent dangerous chimney fires. Make sure your chimney is swept regularly by a registered chimney sweep. Sweeping frequencies below are for guidance only. Frequency will depend on a number of factors including: type of fuel, appliance used, duration of use, moisture content of wood fuel, type of chimney: • Smokeless coals - at least once a year • Wood - up to four times a year • Bituminous coal - twice a year • Oil - once a year • Gas once a year Growing in popularity are wood burning stoves and they also need to be checked regularly to ensure they are safe and clean, ensure wood burners are installed and maintained in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. Top tips • always use a fire guard to protect against flying sparks from hot embers • make sure embers are properly put out before you go to bed or leaving the house • when burning wood, use dry, seasoned woods only never burn cardboard boxes or waste paper • do not overload the grate consider having a carbon monoxide detector fitted as an • additional safeguard against the build-up of poisonous fumes • have a working smoke alarm Smoke alarms Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service advise you to: • regularly check your alarm/s by pressing the button • once a year – change your battery or consider buying a ten-year alarm which will not require frequent battery changes • once a year – vacuum and wipe the smoke alarm casing to ensure dust isn’t blocking the sensor chamber (For mains wired alarms, switch off first). For more winter safety tips please visit the Service’s website.

Light up your home - Avoid becoming a victim of burglary
You drive to work with your lights on, you drive home with your lights on…but do you light up your home when you go out? With these dark nights, it’s the easiest time of year to spot who’s in and who’s out. Sadly, that’s great news for burglars. We often see a spike at this time of the year as criminals cash-in on obviously empty homes during the darker nights. And think of all those nice new Christmas presents! It may sound like stating the obvious, but locking up, shutting windows and leaving a light on can go a long way to keeping the burglars out. Our statistics show that most break-ins are committed by opportunist thieves, and in a quarter of cases they didn’t even have to use force to gain entry. Even if you are just popping to a neighbour, make sure you lock up behind you. As darkness descends, leaving a light on or using a light timer when you are out can act as an effective deterrent. Top security tips • A well-lit home gives the impression someone is in • Use timer switches to turn lights on when you are out • Save energy and money with low-energy light bulbs • Lock windows and doors and keep gates and side entrances well secured • Don’t leave car keys or valuables near windows, doors or letterboxes, where burglars can reach through to steal them • Invest in external lighting We urge you to property mark your valuables and make the details viewable to the police by registering them on www.immobilise.com . You can register your belongings for free, improving the chance of getting them back if they are lost or stolen.
