FROM THE EDITOR
Happy New Year! Welcome to the January edition of LocalReach. I hope you all had a lovely Christmas and are thinking about 2018 and possible groups and activities you may be interested in taking up! This month the Mudlarks are encouraging you to join their group and try a session for free, as are the Bowls Club in St. Andrew’s Road. Maybe going to watch the pantomime with your family is the preferred way to socialise, but be quick, the tickets are on sale and you wouldn’t want to miss out on this popular local production. If you have ever fancied reupholstering that piece of furniture, then the Men’s Shed in Highbridge are encouraging you to get in touch and attend a four week workshop – this is something I will be signing up for! I look forward to receiving editorial for the 2018 publications. Editorial deadline for the February 2018 issue is 11th January

WHAT'S ON
Fibromyalgia HEART of Somerset Monday 8th January - As you are aware, Somerset Skills and Learning in Burnham-on-Sea is closing at the end of December and this is where Fibromyalgia HEART of Somerset Support Group have been based for nearly four years. So we have unfortunately lost our home! We are a support group that offers support, friendship, and information for people who suffer with Fibromyalgia and M.E, and their families/carers. We aim to banish the sense of isolation and the feelings of being alone that fibromyalgia and M.E can bring. We work closely with FMA UK (Fibromyalgia Action UK) which is a national charity, fighting for freedom from Fibromyalgia, and we are an official support group of FMA UK. We have been searching for a new venue and have found a new home at The Princess Theatre, Pizey Room, Princess Street, Burnham-on-Sea, which is just opposite where we were originally! So we will be beginning the new year with a new venue and looking forward to a fantastic new year ahead on Monday 8th January 2018 at 1.30pm - 3.30pm. Many thanks for your
time - Sam Merries on behalf of Fibromyalgia HEART of Somerset Support Group.

Make volunteering your New Year’s resolution The new year is the perfect time for new resolutions and new challenges – so why not make time to volunteer in 2018? The Samaritans of Weston-super-Mare and North Somerset are looking for more people to help boost their team. They need ‘listeners’ who are on the end of the phone taking calls from people who are often at their lowest ebb. The branch is part of a national charity which offers emotional support for those struggling to cope. It is open around the clock and as well as taking over 14,000 calls last year, the local volunteers also answered almost 3,000 emails and 700 texts. Branch director Joe said, “We are always busy and desperately need new volunteers to join us. The number of calls we receive is increasing, and without more volunteers there is a danger that calls could go unanswered and this is unacceptable. “We are asking members of the local community to sign up to support those who may not have anywhere else to turn. If you have just a few hours a week to spare then we would love to hear from you.” Regular information mornings are held at the charity’s Weston-super-Mare branch in the town’s High Street. The next one is on Saturday 13th January running from 10am – 12 midday. If you feel you would like to help the Samaritans in any way, then call in and find out more about their work. More information is available from recruitment director Gill on 07507 990599 or email samaritansrecruitmentwsm@yahoo.com Gill said, “ We provide extensive training and support to our volunteers and it is an incredibly rewarding job to do. Come along and see what it is all about. If you feel you can’t take on the listening roles there are plenty of other ways you can support the branch. We would love to see you.”

ADVERTISEMENT The annual festivities are over and we welcome 2018 into our lives after indulging ourselves with teat after treat for the close of 2017. Perhaps it’s time to start appreciating our bodies and treating it to the numerous health benefits of swimming. The Penguin Swimming Club is there for the over 60s, meeting weekly at the Sports & Swimming Academy Pool, Berrow Road, Burnham-on-Sea (next to the Community Centre). Our members consist of ladies and gents of all abilities, confident swimmers, less confident swimmers and non-swimmers. They have exclusive use of the pool between 9.30am and 10.25am every Tuesday. To avoid overcrowding, our membership is limited and we maintain a waiting list for potential new members. However, at present we have a small number of spaces available. If you would like more information, why not come along on a Tuesday morning between 9.15am and 10am and meet a member of our committee who will be happy to discuss membership with you. Or telephone either 786825 or 780203. Happy New Year and best wishes to all LocalReach readers, and we look forward to meeting some of you at one of our weekly swims.

Downsizing? Think ‘Rightsizing’ During a lifetime a person may move to a new home several times, the size and features of their properties changing according to their contemporary needs. For many, their property requirements shift once grown children have flown the nest. Large, family houses can seem too big and unwieldy for one or two people and perceived as difficult to maintain. But once a decision has been taken to move to a smaller or more convenient home, what further challenges do downsizers face? “Family homes can hold decades of memories so letting go can be incredibly hard,” says Andrew Stoppani of Westcoast Properties in Burnham-on-Sea. “Sometimes our clients have anxiety over where all of their belongings will fit if they move to a smaller space. Viewing the process as an opportunity to streamline and declutter can help; as for those memories, try and keep them alive with photos and conversation. Although it can be difficult to see the advantages beforehand, most people experience real benefits of moving to a more appropriate property.” With an aging population there can be concern over finding a suitable home; are there lots of people all competing for the same type of space? “As with any client group, the needs and wants of the cohort vary hugely,” Andrew explains. “Some people want a view, others are keen to spend their spare time gardening whilst a few are looking for a pied-a-terre that acts as a stop-gap in between round-the-world trips. These differences mean that there’s no fixed property type for downsizers. Another plus is that larger, family homes are always in high demand, so making the initial sale from their original house doesn’t tend to be a problem.” Making the decision to sell up is never an easy one, and with the additional elements involved in downsizing, getting the right help and advice is important. “The generation currently looking to downsize is one that generally likes to do business face-to-face and we love that!” says Andrew. “Come and talk to a local agent, who knows your chosen location inside out and can talk knowledgeably about property types relevant to you. It’s our aim to find the right-sized space for all our customers – whatever their stage in life.” www.westcoast-properties.co.uk

DONATE YOUR UNWANTED WINTER FUEL PAYMENTS TO ‘SURVIVING WINTER’ With the arrival of the colder months, Somerset Community Foundation have launched their eighth Surviving Winter fundraising campaign. Surviving Winter was started in 2010 by people who wanted to donate their Winter Fuel Payment to help others in Somerset less fortunate than themselves, and last year attracted donations of unwanted Winter Fuel payments from over 480 pensioners in Somerset, 28% of whom had never contributed to the Surviving Winter campaign before. Case Study: Surviving Winter has connected Mrs. Watts to a case worker from Knightstone Housing. She had a fall
22
3 years ago and suffered an injury to her shoulder, which continuously causes her a lot of pain. She also suffers from osteoporosis in her knee, septic arthritis and a heart condition. During the winter months Mrs. Watts has the heating on for most of the day and will sit next to the radiator. The cold really affects her joints so she wears long johns under her trousers to keep warm. Mrs. Watts used a grant from Surviving Winter to purchase a warm pair of trousers and a long cardigan to wear when she does the weekly shop on a Thursday. Her case worker also connected her with many other resources in the community to help warm and healthy.
If you would like to donate your Winter Fuel Payment and help older people in Somerset stay warm, active and better connected through the winter period, please contact Somerset Community Foundation on 01749 344949 or visit: www.somersetcf.org.uk If you run a local community project and would like to find out more about grant funding, please call Somerset Community Foundation on: 01749 344949 or visit: www.somersetcf.org.uk

How to save money on printer ink and never worry about ink costs again! Due to ink prices, most people fear the day their printer runs dry and new ink needs purchasing, often finding themselves foraging around the web for the cheapest ink deals. Many who do this are unaware of a modern new alternative to ordering ink designed to save on ink costs. HP Instant Ink is a monthly service subscription offered by HP (Hewlett Packard) that allows any eligible ink-based HP printer, provided a working internet connection, to automatically have new compatible ink shipped to arrive shortly before the current ink depletes, meaning never a single moment with no ink at home again. Old cartridges are to be recycled back to HP. With email notifications, this system removes all the leg-work from ordering ink, while keeping you informed. Most HP ink-based printers with a touchscreen interface will be eligible for this service. For a list of eligible printers, head to http://instantink. hpconnected.com and expand “Is my printer eligible for HP Instant Ink?”. This service can be set up upon purchase of a new eligible printer, or at any later date. The monthly cost depends on how many pages the user wishes to print per month, allowing everybody to find a plan that fits their needs best. For example, £1.99/m allows for 50 pages, ranging to £7.99/m for 300 pages. On any given plan, un-used monthly prints automatically carry over to the following month, allowing for up to double the original limit, for example, if no monthly prints are done while subscribed to the £1.99 (50 prints) plan, the following month allows for 100 prints. While those who print the most are set to save the most on ink costs by using this service, anyone who prints roughly 50 or more pages per month should consider signing up; head over to www.hpconnected.com for more information. Ever considered volunteering but not sure what to do or concerned that the commitment might be too much? Well I might have the answer! I work with a great group of volunteers (working with Contact the Elderly) from the East Huntspill, Bason Bridge, Mark and Burnham-on-Sea area who provide afternoon tea on one Sunday per month for two groups of older (over 75) isolated people, and we have a waiting list. If we are to start a third group, I need to find the following volunteers, and it would be great to go into 2018 with an additional group supporting even more older isolated people in the area. The roles: Hosts - once or twice a year you would host a group of up to eight older people and four drivers, providing afternoon tea, homemade or shop bought, and good conversation. You will need to have enough chairs either at a table and/or in the living room, in one or more rooms and a downstairs toilet (many of our guests struggle with stairs). Drivers - once a month or every other, depending on what you can commit to, you would transport approx. two guests to the events, enjoy a cuppa and good conversation. You would need to be DBS checked as you will be working with vulnerable adults, but we take care of that. And, of course, you need a road worthy car, that is taxed and insured. If you might be interested, please email me at churchlandfarmpaula@gmail.com and I can answer any questions you have.

Have you heard the news? Two Local Credit Unions have joined forces to create the Somerset Community Credit Union You are invited to join us. Bridgwater & District Credit Union and Taunton Deane & West Somerset Credit Union (Moorvale) were both originally registered in 1998, and after growing steadily over the last 19 years, their members decided to join together from 1st October 2017. The new Somerset Community Credit Union now offers its services to anyone living or working in Somerset or North Somerset. To join you can come along to one of our collection points or to one of our offices, and join for a £2 fee (so long as you have two forms of I.D.) or you can join online via our new website (www.somersetccu.uk) where it will cost a £4 one-off fee. Once you have been saving regularly for a while, you become eligible for low-cost loans. What is a Credit Union? The Credit Union movement in the UK has grown steadily since the 1960s. Currently there are 424 registered Credit Unions in the UK. For anyone looking to save and/or borrow they offer a great alternative to the national banks, and a much cheaper means of getting credit than through any Doorstep or Payday lenders. Many Credit Unions offer loans to members who have saved with them, even if they have been turned down by the banks. The funds used belong to Credit Union members who have saved and invested for the longer term, and in most years they are rewarded with a dividend which can be comparable to other financial investments. For further information, our Bridgwater office can be contacted on 01278 447100 email: info@somersetccu.uk and the Taunton office can be reached on 01823 336425 email: taunton@somersetccu.uk

Do you like Classical music? The U3A classical music appreciation groups continue to flourish. We have now been going since 2013. There are now three separate groups all dedicated to the same format. The sessions last for two hours commencing at 2pm with a short tea and biscuit break. We play a very wide selection of classical music from early Renaissance to comparatively modern times and we have even had some Gregorian Chant. Each member presents his or her choice in the form of a concert on a rota system and usually provides some programme notes to help further understand the pieces of music they are going to present. However, this is not compulsory, and no one is forced to provide a programme if they don’t want to. Along with the great composers such as Mozart, Beethoven, Bach and Brahms, we also play works by lesser known composers such as Janacek, John Adams, Delius, Barber, Gliere, etc. The three groups are as follows: Group 1 meets every second and fourth Monday in the month at Paul Hambleton’s house in Burnham-onSea. At present, there are vacancies for an extra two members. Group 1 Roy West: 01278 324020. Group 2 meets every first and third Monday in the month at Ken Henton’s house in Mark. At present there is also room for a couple more members. Group 2 Ken Henton: 01278 641278. Group 3 meets every second and fourth Wednesday in the month at Rod Winfield’s house in Burnham-onSea. Rod has room for one more member. Group 3 Rod Winfield: 01278 789824. If you like classical music, please come along and try us out. Get in touch with one of the group leaders for further information.
