There are walks taking place, and with the new Brean to Weston cycle path soon to be completed this will open up the opportunity to walk or cycle further afield. The Apex wildflower meadow is looking lovely again so if thinking of somewhere local to visit why not start here! 'Siobhan Johnson Singers' present their annual 'Summer Nights Concert'
in aid of St Margaret's Hospice on Sat 15th July 7.30pm at St John's Church, Highbridge. Both local choirs Burnham Youth Choir and Burnham on Song will be performing several songs from the musicals including Medleys from Mamma Mia, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Hairspray, Les Miserables, The Adams Family, School of Rock, Oliver Twist, an Andrew Lloyd Webber Mash Up Medley as well as Bridge Over Troubled Water, Mr Postman and Rule The World to name just a few. We are delighted to have special guest performers with professional virtuoso pianist Richard Lennox tinkling the ivories again this year as well as accompanist for the evening and local vocalist Ben Kempton will be singing including a stunningly beautiful selection of songs from Les Miserables including Bring Him Home and a breath taking duet 'Little Fall of Rain' with Hannah Murdoch. It is going to be an evening packed full of feel good songs from the musicals as well as being truly entertained by both choirs, Richard Lennox on the piano and Ben Kempton's fabulous tenor voice. Georgina's Story
Following a long drive through France to stay with friends, Georgina stopped at a local supermarket to stock up with wine and goodies before arriving at their holiday home. In the supermarket she slipped and fell and everyone thought she had broke her leg. Georgina realised that she hadn't broke it but wouldn't let anyone attempt to lift her, insisting she could manage. The fact was that she was mortified that they would discover how heavy she was. They gave Georgina an X-ray and medication and established she had ruptured her hamstring. The journey back to England was painful, once home she had to have physiotherapy on her back and hip and they recommended to help her recovery, she should lose weight. Georgina decided to join a local Slimming World group and on her 1st week she lost 4 lb and it gave her such a boost that she immediately shared the success with my family. Georgina had totally support from her friends and family and her husband also enjoys all the slimming world meals she cooks. Georgina has had many health benefits, she can walk more, has far more energy, and sleeps better and has less problems with her hip and knees. All Georgina's diets had failed in the past, slimming world was a life style change and she says "I can eat plenty of free foods, never feel hungry and lose weight. I feel 10 years younger and more confident after losing 5 stone 8 1/2 lb.". Georgina had a health check recently and passed in all areas with flying colours. Georgina currently attends the Friday morning group at Baptist Church, College Street, and says she has enjoyed the the warm companionship, support, fun from her consultants and all her lovely friends. Georgina says "In group we support each other sharing of recipes - the taster sessions are wonderful which is a great source of sharing new ideas and sharing. Hayley is always in touch with support and our slimming Facebook page is extremely good. Sharing recipes and blips makes you feel supported and you aren't on your own. I've dropped many dress sizes from size 24 currently in a size 12-14".

Burnham Information and Rescue Support
TBurnham Information Centre (BiARS) has now been running by a group of volunteers for six years and is growing from strength to strength. BiARS is not just an information centre for visitors to this area, but has always been committed to ensuring it is a place that is part of the community and somewhere locals can also gain information. As well as the many tickets on sale for events, coach trips and attractions, BiARS can offer guidance on many things. Now in its summer operating hours, the centre is open seven days a week from 10am - 4pm. BiARS Manager Ian Jefferies says, “It has always been our aim to not just be a traditional Information Centre looking after visitors but to also integrate ourselves into the community. We welcome all locals who are in need of information. Not every enquiry is about what’s on or where to visit! We don’t always have an answer, but with our contacts we will endeavour to find out what we can to assist the residents of our community. We also now have a section where we advertise quality local businesses e.g. plumbers, gardeners etc. that our customers often enquire about. If you wish to advertise in this space from as little as £20 per year, please contact our advertising manager Dan at danjefferies94@hotmail.co.uk “We are still finding out about events that we have not been informed about, so please inform us of any event, no matter how big or small e.g. coffee mornings, so we can assist in advertising it. Music on the Green featuring ‘Lipinski Band’
This year’s annual Music on the Green will be held on Brent Knoll Village Green on Saturday 15th July at 7.30pm. We are thrilled to welcome as this year’s performers ‘Lipinski Band’. They thoroughly entertained the village at last year’s Harvest Supper, with a wide repertoire of music from across the years. Invitation to Tea - Laughter and friendship on Sunday afternoons At Contact the Elderly, we hold free monthly tea parties for small groups of people aged 75 and over, who live alone and need a hand getting out and about. It’s an ideal way to brighten up your Sunday. Our volunteer drivers will take you to and from the party safely, as well as enjoying the tea with you. Moose International – Burnham-onSea Lodge 123 We are a very friendly group of men and ladies that meet every fourth Thursday in the month (except December) at Berrow Village Hall 7.30pm. Our aim is to raise money for local charities and have fun whilst doing so. We have interesting and varied speakers every month, and after our meetings there is tea/coffee or a drink from our licenced bar available. We support our own members and their families and offer regular visits, holidays and help when needed to our lodge widows and widowers. Moose International also arranges Vocational Guidance Courses for the children and grandchildren of our members. This is held at Lyncombe Lodge Hotel, Sandford over a weekend in October. Celebrating the Somerset Coast
The Somerset stretch of the England Coast Path which opened last year runs from Minehead to Brean and is being promoted in the press and on social media currently as #secretseawalks. The 2017 Tennis season is well underway with the Club hosting the Boy’s Under 14 Open
County Qualifying Championships early in May. Teams from South Wales, Essex, Berkshire, Wiltshire, Devon and Oxfordshire took part. The Summer coaching programme has started with lessons available from ‘JW Tennis’ for Tots aged 2 years and upwards up to the retired older participant. On 23rd June Julie will be running a Burnham Schools Tennis Festival for local primary schools, followed up by the wider Sedgemoor Primary Schools Tennis Competition on 27th June. During the school holidays there will be Multi-Sports Camps held at the Avenue Tennis Club for children aged 5-16 years where they will undertake and build their skills in a range of sports including tennis, football, dodgeball and cricket and have the opportunity to meet new friends and develop teamwork via tactical games such as Touch the Flag. Entries will soon open for the Burnham-on-Sea Open Championships (Grade 3 LTA) which take place from August 13th to 19th. The Competition includes events for under 8’s to over 80’s! The Summer Sunday monthly barbeques have started and the next one will be held on 4th June followed in July on Sunday 2nd. Somerset Hedge Group Photographic Competition 2017
Hedgerow Trees - The Somerset Hedge Group has launched its 2017 digital photographic competition. The competition follows successful competitions held every two years since 2008. Winners will receive cash prizes at a presentation evening in November 2017. With sponsorship from CPRE, the Blackdown Hills and Mendip Hills AONBs, and Marshall Agroecology Ltd, this competition will run during the year from now to the beginning of October 2017. Generous prize money will be available for two classes: Open and Junior (under 15). The competition is for amateur photographers with a maximum of three entries per person. Digital images only. The closing date for entries is 2 October 2017. So take your camera into the Somerset countryside and try to capture some of the fascinating and wonderful hedgerow trees across the county across the seasons. The Burnham Area Flower Club
Come and join the flower club on Monday 17th July, where we will have demonstrator, Sue Neale and she will be doing her flower arrangements based on the title ‘Around the World in Two Hours’. It will be a brilliant night where we can all take a trip around the world with her. This meeting is also our friends and family night, so the more the merrier! Come along, bring your family members and your friends where we can all have a good night out. The doors at St. Andrew’s Church Hall are opened at 7pm where a free cup of tea or coffee along with a biscuit will be waiting for you. This Family Friendly sponsored walk will start at 10.30am from outside the Tavern at Brean Leisure Park on Sunday 3rd September. Two distances are offered: The longest route follows a delightful trail along the beach to Brean Cove, then over Brean Down to enjoy the fabulous views on the walk to Brean Fort and then return (7.5 miles total). Those that don't fancy the hilly Brean Down section may turn around at Brean Cove (5 miles total). Participants are invited to take their time and enjoy walking along our lovely coastline. Refreshments are available on route or better still bring a picnic. By taking part you’ll help to raise vital funds to support the families who use Childrens Hospice South West. Did you buy your last home with your head or your heart? Recent research by Gocompare.com has created a Top 20 of features that buyers look for in property. With central heating topping the 2017 list for the second year running, and double glazing continuing to come close behind, the survey suggests that purchasers still prioritise warmth and security. Research such as this demonstrates that there is a hugely practical element when it comes to looking for property. “Owning our home is likely to be the biggest financial outlay most of us will ever make,” says Andrew Stoppani of Westcoast Properties in Burnham-on-Sea. “Having a strong idea of what we need, and the recognition that property has to meet these fundamental criteria helps us make the right decision.” The research also indicates how connectivity plays a part and, indeed, how this is evolving. In 2016, a landline telephone was more important than a reliable and clear mobile phone signal but now the mobile signal takes priority. Buyers are also keen to have a good, reliable broadband connection, strong enough to stream TV and film. “Those buying family homes would expect to be able to have numerous devices on the go at once,” says Andrew. However, whilst it is interesting to observe changing trends, vendors should also bear in mind that house purchasers come in a huge variety. A person seeking a buy-to-let flat, for example, may not be overly concerned about the lack of outside space, whilst downsizers could put more emphasis on a garden as they envisage themselves tending their roses during retirement. “The crucial part for us as estate agents is to discuss the wants and needs of our registered buyers,” says Andrew. “We then provide support in their property search by seeking out features that are specific to them, that we know are of particular relevance. The Fixing of Fees
For most people, the biggest issue with letting are the fees. A recent survey of 5,000 tenants & Landlords resulted in over 80% of tenants feeling they do not get value for money, and a whopping 85% saying they do not trust their letting agent, with 55% saying transparency was the most important quality on their agent. iIt cannot be denied that your data is valuable above all else on your computer. A large portion of your data, such as family photos, may not be re-creatable if lost - other data, perhaps work-related, may require strenuous amounts of time and effort to re-create. To avoid tears and regret, it is highly recommended that all important data is backed up, and regularly. However, many are unaware of the various methods of backing up. It is important to know that data loss can strike at any time, and to always be ready for it. Data loss can occur because of human action, which is easier done than it sounds, but also commonly due to software bugs/ virus’, hardware failures and of course, natural disasters. It is important that you perform backups properly, to avoid realizing, after data loss occurs, that your backups never completed correctly, rendering them unusable. The two main approaches are onsite backups and offsite backups. Onsite backups mean data is saved onto an external device one connects to their computer (or laptop) – these are typically scheduled to run once a day, week, or month. For this, a backup drive needs to be purchased, with no subsequent purchases, making it the overall cheaper solution. Offsite backups store your data on the internet instead, thus purging the risk of a natural disaster destroying all copies of your data, and can either be configured to continuously backup all new files on-the-go, or, similarly to onsite backups, can be ran on a schedule. Because offsite backups upload files to the internet, it is generally not a recommended solution for those with very slow internet connections, however, with fibre broadband growing to cover most households in the UK, offsite backups have become a common approach While offsite solutions have free options, such as OneDrive and Dropbox, they cap the amount of data allowed to be backup up, typically too small to fit whole photo albums and documents, but their paid versions offer more space, and a great solution to those looking to sync files across two or more devices. Naturally, a downside of offsite backups is the risk of data theft, so if your data is particularly sensitive, then it may be worth investing in premium solutions, which allow older backups to remain accessible for longer, and offer features like data encryption. Gardening Jobs for July • Keep that hoe going and remove those weeds! • Keep greenhouses well ventilated and damp down floors on hot days. Don’t let plants dry out and feed fruiting crops regularly with a high potash feed. •If outside, plants need watering - remember a good soaking once a week is more beneficial than watering little and often. • Deadhead flowering plants to keep them producing more flowers. Prune any shrubs that have finished flowering to encourage new shoots for next year. • Cut hedging and mow lawns regularly. • Give your roses another granular feed after the first flush of flowers. A handful per plant is about right. •Net any ripening fruit not growing in a fruit cage and pick fruit when it is young and fresh. • When strawberries have finished, cut off the old leaves and tidy up the beds. • There is still time to sow runner beans and French beans for a late crop plus broccoli, beetroot, lettuce and kale. • Shallots can be lifted and dried and you can lift some onions if they are a usable size, but leave most onions to ripen during next month. Volunteers are urgently required for Burnham and Highbridge Stroke Club
The club meets on Tuesdays from 10am until 1pm at the Burnham Area Youth Centre. The club was set up in the 1980s and is a registered charity. There were originally 15 trained voluntary helpers and 15 stroke members, so it was a one-to-one social gathering. Over the years, helpers have moved away or passed on and only one of the original helpers remains. There are currently five helpers, and membership has increased, so the club is in desperate need of more voluntary helpers. The club is financially self-supporting. Members enjoy playing table top games and have a Tai Chi Instructor and occasional entertainment. Members are provided with tea/coffee and soup during the morning. Helpers are required to assist with setting up tables and chairs from 9am, making tea, coffee, soup, washing up, assisting members with mobility problems and putting tables and chairs away. If you feel you could help, please speak to the Chairman, Nicky or Vice Chairman, Brenda at the B.A.Y.Centre on a Tuesday morning. 22
