A fitting end.
At Kingfisher we aim to make choosing windows, doors and conservatories a pleasant and relaxing experience for our customers. From first to last. That is why we set such great store on the care we take with installation. Care that is reflected in the number of people who recommend us to their friends. We train our fitters thoroughly and expect them not only to take pride in their workmanship but in every other aspect of the Kingfisher service they help us provide. You will find them punctual, courteous, polite and tidy. As one of our customers, Noel Nation, puts it “...the workmanship was faultless and as a result we recommended them to our daughter...” Kingfisher is a long established family firm and family values dictate the way we do business. So much so that many of our customers become friends. Our product range is comprehensive and consistently keenly priced. It includes PVCu, timber and aluminium and can be viewed, at your leisure, at our showrooms. If you invite us to give you a quotation, we will take the time to establish your requirements exactly, explain the options and choices to you, give advice where required, take careful measurements and give you a clear, detailed breakdown of costs. We will then leave you to make a decision in your own time. You will not be harassed or badgered.

FROM THE EDITOR
Welcome to this edition of Local Reach, once again packed with information about local events being organised in our community. There is plenty to do locally, or groups to actively get involved in. The Burnham Information and Rescue Service is keen to hear from local groups organising events so they can help with promoting these for you, so find Ian Jefferies’ details in this month’s edition. Burnham-on-Sea & District in Bloom have provided us with their entry form for those wishing to put themselves forward – having been a judge for this on a number of occasions it would be lovely to encourage a few more entrants this year, so get your green fingers at the ready! I look forward to receiving information about your future events and projects by the closing date, but remember, we cannot guarantee all information will be printed, so let me know as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.
Editorial deadline for the July issue is Wednesday 7th June 2017 Jacqui Strong, Community Editor for LocalReach. jacqui@localreach.co.uk

Outdoor Gym & Walk
Would anyone be interested in joining me on a Monday morning each week starting on Monday 12th June, 9.30am at the Apex Park office, taking part in a warm up stroll around the park followed by a session at the outdoor gym? This is a social group and will be made up of like-minded people who would like to use the gym equipment but would rather be part of a group than on their own. There will be no instructor but all the pieces of equipment have details about the safe use and personal responsibility. If you are interested, email Jacqui.strong@hotmail.co.uk or just turn up on the day. I have wanted to give this a go for a while but would like to do it as part of a group – anyone interested?

Georgina's Story
Following a long drive through France to stay with friends, Georgina stopped at a local supermarket to stock up with wine and goodies before arriving at their holiday home. In the supermarket she slipped and fell and everyone thought she had broke her leg. Georgina realised that she hadn't broke it but wouldn't let anyone attempt to lift her, insisting she could manage. The fact was that she was mortified that they would discover how heavy she was. They gave Georgina an X-ray and medication and established she had ruptured her hamstring. The journey back to England was painful, once home she had to have physiotherapy on her back and hip and they recommended to help her recovery, she should lose weight. Georgina decided to join a local Slimming World group and on her 1st week she lost 4 lb and it gave her such a boost that she immediately shared the success with my family. Georgina had totally support from her friends and family and her husband also enjoys all the slimming world meals she cooks. Georgina has had many health benefits, she can walk more, has far more energy, and sleeps better and has less problems with her hip and knees. All Georgina's diets had failed in the past, slimming world was a life style change and she says "I can eat plenty of free foods, never feel hungry and lose weight. I feel 10 years younger and more confident after losing 5 stone 8 1/2 lb.". Georgina had a health check recently and passed in all areas with flying colours. Georgina currently attends the Friday morning group at Baptist Church, College Street, and says she has enjoyed the the warm companionship, support, fun from her consultants and all her lovely friends. Georgina says "In group we support each other sharing of recipes - the taster sessions are wonderful which is a great source of sharing new ideas and sharing. Hayley is always in touch with support and our slimming Facebook page is extremely good. Sharing recipes and blips makes you feel supported and you aren't on your own. I've dropped many dress sizes from size 24 currently in a size 12-14".

Friends of Marine Cove
The volunteer group was set up a number of years ago to help with the project at the popular sea front garden next to St. Andrew’s Church. A number of events and activities have been established at the gardens, and the volunteers help with events and gardening on a regular basis. If anyone is interested in helping in the garden, they meet on the first Saturday in the month at 10am for a couple of hours. Recently the group held a successful May Day event and had the help and support of a number of people including the Burnham-on-Sea Evening Flower Group who supplied and created a wonderful floral arrangement on the pergola pillars with the help of many children who attended the event. The group would like to say a special thank you to the group and also the dancers from St. Joseph’s School and the Youth Brass Band who all give their time for free. The Chalice Morris Men performed in the garden and will be dancing again on Thursday 29th June at 7.45pm as part of their evening meetings. The volunteers were also honoured to be invited and presented with a cheque for £150 by Moose International to help with the garden. Burnham Information and Rescue Support
Burnham Information Centre (BiARS) has now been running by a group of volunteers for six years and is growing from strength to strength. BiARS is not just an information centre for visitors to this area, but has always been committed to ensuring it is a place that is part of the community and somewhere locals can also gain information. As well as the many tickets on sale for events, coach trips and attractions, BiARS can offer guidance on many things. Now in its summer operating hours, the centre is open seven days a week from 10am - 4pm. BiARS Manager Ian Jefferies said: ‘It has always been our aim to not just be a traditional Information Centre looking after visitors but to also integrate ourselves into the community. We welcome all locals who are in need of information. Not every enquiry is about what’s on or where to visit! We don’t always have an answer but with our contacts we will endeavour to find out what we can, to assist the residents of our community. We also now have a section where we advertise quality local businesses e.g. plumbers, gardeners etc. that our customers often enquire about. If you wish to advertise in this space from as little as £20 per year, please contact our advertising manager Dan at danjefferies94@hotmail.co.uk We are still finding out about events that we have not been informed about, so please inform us of any event, no matter how big or small e.g. coffee mornings, so we can assist in advertising it. We are currently setting up a section where all the regular local groups and clubs will be listed, so please ask your groups to contact us.’ Ian can be contacted by email at ianfromburnham@gmail.com

Independence in your own home with Suttons Stairlifts
If you have difficulty getting up and down stairs you are not alone. The decision to install a stairlift is sometimes a difficult one to take but, when compared with the alternative of moving, or living on only one level of their home, many people have found a stairlift to be their preferred solution. Suttons Stairlifts is a family-run business dedicated to providing a fair and ethical service with a nopressure selling policy. We offer a range of new or refurbished Handicare stair lifts, either straight or curved in the Somerset and Mendip area. We also offer a rental option for straight stairlifts as well as servicing and safety checks, repairs and removals. You are also choosing an ISO Quality approved product that conforms to the ethical business practices required by the British Healthcare Trades Association. It is a popular misconception that stairlifts are fitted to the wall, they are usually fitted to the staircase itself. Most lifts will only take between 2-4 hours to install. All Handicare stairlifts have safety sensors on the power pack and footplate; these are designed to stop the lift if it meets any obstruction. If there is a power cut your stairlift will continue to operate for approximately 10 trips using the internal batteries. Handicare stairlifts offer features such as a powered swivel seat and powered folding footplate; these can make using a stairlift even easier by allowing you to operate these functions at the touch of a button.. Even if you don’t need them now, they may be something you will benefit from in the future. We will visit you to survey the staircase and conduct a user assessment leaving you the leaflets and prices so you can make the decision in your own time. Whilst stairlifts are very simple to use they are mechanical devices and do require annual servicing and maintenance. With our inclusive and comprehensive 12 or 24 month warranty and 365 day coverage you can be assured of a first-class and personal service.

Brent Knoll Fete This year the Village Fête will be held on Saturday 10th June. Gates open at 2pm – please put this date in your diary; we would love to see you there. This year we are having a Medieval Market as our theme, which should give everyone a lot of scope for dressing up, for decorating stalls and for thinking of new ideas. There should be plenty of activities for all ages, including active events for children and we are looking forward to a visit from the King Alfred’s School Band, plus our regular and delightful visits from the Brent Knoll School dancers and the Chalice Morris Men. A particularly interesting feature this year will be a large cuddly lion, kindly donated by Penny Bull, which we will be using as a prize in a guess the name competition, drawn at the Fête – though we hope to have it on display in the village shop prior to the day and you can select a name then. If you would like a stall, wish to run a game, would like to have a display, or whatever, and have not arranged a site yet, please do get in contact. My telephone number is below. Please also state whether you would like to be inside or outside. For more information, contact John Page, Chairman Village Fête Committee: 01278 760986.

Sedgemoor Playday calls out for votes to bag a share of bag charge fund
Sedgemoor Playday is bidding to bag a massive cash boost from the Tesco Bags of Help initiative. Tesco teamed up with Groundwork to launch its community funding scheme, which sees grants of £4,000, £2,000 and £1,000 – all raised from the 5p bag levy – being awarded to local community projects. Three groups in every Tesco region have been shortlisted to receive the cash award and shoppers are being invited to head along to Tesco stores to vote for who they think should take away the top grant. Sedgemoor Playday is one of the groups on the shortlist and is run in conjunction with National Playday. This year the event takes place on Wednesday 2nd August at Apex Park in Highbridge. 7000 children attended last year, all of whom were accompanied by an adult. It is a free event and the committee relies on grants and donations to be able to run the day. There are over 40 activities on offer. Rosie Pike on behalf of the committee asks you to donate your coin to this worthwhile cause. Voting is taking place at Tesco Burnham-on-Sea, Bower Manor Bridgwater Express and North Petherton Express. Voting is open in stores throughout May and June. Customers will cast their vote using a token given to them at the check-out in store each time they shop. Tesco’s Bags of Help project has already delivered over £28.5 million to more than 4,000 projects up and down the UK. Tesco customers get the chance to vote for three different groups every time they shop. Every other month, when votes are collected, three groups in each of Tesco’s regions will be awarded funding. Lindsey Crompton, Head of Community at Tesco, said: ‘We are absolutely delighted to open the voting for May and June. There are some fantastic projects on the shortlists and we can’t wait to see them come to life in hundreds of communities.’ Funding is available to community groups and charities looking to fund local projects that bring benefits to communities. Anyone can nominate a project and organisations can apply online. To find out more visit www.tesco.com/bagsofhelp

Parkinson’s Support Group
The Parkinson’s Support Group meets at the Catholic Church, Burnham-on-Sea on the second Monday of the month, 2pm - 4pm. Come and join us if you are affected by Parkinson’s, or maybe a carer, friend or family member. We are a friendly, fun group and try to offer something different to do each month. We have speakers, quizzes, outings etc. We also aim to provide information and advice, a cuppa and a chat. Last month we were pleased to welcome three new members and hope to see them regularly. On 12th June we have guest speaker physiotherapist Gareth McGuire, so look forward to seeing established and new members. Our very informal singing group meets on the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month. This is at Southwell Hall, Highbridge at 10.30am. We would love more people to join us; the singing is purely for fun with tea or coffee provided; the entry cost of £1 per person covers cost of hall and refreshment. Singing benefits the memory, the speech, the breathing and makes you feel good. Carole Ransome runs these sessions (01278 782428). Exercise is of great benefit in Parkinson’s, and our class is on Wednesdays at the Lisa Jane dance studio, Highbridge at 10am. Run by experienced teacher Jenny Taylor, this is a programme of gentle exercise designed to suit those with Parkinson’s. Cost £3 or £4 to non-members. This is an enjoyable hour long session with music. For info, contact Jenny: 785653. For any group information, contact Christine Manners: 783696 / Malcolm Conyers: 01934 740282/ Kim Lewis: 787022

Our aim is to raise money for local charities and have fun whilst doing so. We have interesting and varied speakers every month after our meetings with tea/coffee or a drink from our licenced bar. We support our own members and their families and offer regular visits, holidays and help when needed, to our lodge widows and widowers. Moose International also arranges Vocational Guidance Courses for the children and grandchildren of our members. This is held at Lyncombe Lodge Hotel, Sandford over a weekend in October. If you think Moose might be right for you, and being a member you can widen your circle of friends and also help raise funds for the community, why don’t you get in touch with Chris on 01278 760486 or Dorothy on 01278 782699 to ask more. We would love to hear from you.

During the month of May, the club has been busy participating in many events, on 1st May we made an arch for the children to place flowers into for the May Day event in Marine Cove. On 5th May members distributed Lonely Bouquets and arranged a pedestal in the Princess Theatre to commemorate National Flower Arranging Day. On 27th May members stewarded the Bake-Off at the Burnhamon-Sea Food and Drink Festival: EAT. Remember to save the date in your diary for 17th July, where the flower club is having a friends and family night, so bring everyone along, all visitors are welcome. Weston Hospice Care Friends Group, Burnham-on-Sea Branch
We have recently formed the Weston Hospice care friends group, Burnham-on-Sea branch. We held our first fundraising event at Treasure Court, Berrow Road, Burnham-on-Sea, which was a great success. The group will be organising more fundraising events in the near future; we would ask for support from the residents of Burnham-on-Sea, Highbridge and the surrounding areas for this fantastic charity. We would also like to ask if anyone has the time or resources to spare to help us with any of our events or who would be interested in joining the friends group, to contact us on 07776 306125. Weston Hospice care is a local charity and costs in the region of £3.5 million to run per year. Only 21% of this total is funded by the Government, so we need to raise as much money as possible through charity donations and fundraising events.
Volunteer Walk Leaders Training
Training is being arranged for Wednesday 28th June in Burnham-on-Sea or Highbridge. We are looking for people who would be interested in training to become a walk leader to either cover existing walks locally like the Marine Cove circular on a Wednesday morning starting at 10am. There will be the opportunity to develop your own walks with a group and have support and assistance marketing and promoting these. The training will last approximately half a day and expressions of interest are being encouraged by contacting Jacqueline.strong@sedgemoor.gov. uk for more details. Walking has many benefits to our health and we would like to encourage more walkers to come forward and leaders to help run the walks. Walking for Health oversees the training and provides insurance to all groups with a qualified walk leader.
Annual Classic Vehicle Show
This annual event takes place at the Beachside Holiday Park in Brean. The owners of the Sundowner Cafe and Beachside Holiday Park have been putting this event on for the past two years to raise money for the Somerset & Dorset Air Ambulance, and so far approximately £2000 plus has been presented to them. At last year’s event, we were blessed with good weather and a visit from a WW2 Spitfire and a WW2 Hurricane fighter aircraft from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. This year we will be having one of their much larger aircraft, the Douglas DC3 Dakota coming over. It is free to visit – so please come along and support this local charity. For more details, contact Rob Coombes on 07919 351867.
Spark Training: Community Action Towards Better Health and Wellbeing
This interactive workshop will be hosted by Tom Barber, Spark’s Community Partnership Coordinator. Tom leads our Healthy Communities Project, facilitating collaborative working amongst voluntary organisations, GP practices and housing and other community organisations to drive action towards better health and wellbeing. Tom has successfully rolled out this project in several communities in South Somerset and our workshop will present a great opportunity for anyone with an interest in community health initiatives to gain valuable insight on how you can build these vital community networks. To quote a previous delegate: 'Tom's knowledge is vast and his passion for public health is obvious and infectious', so come along to this motivational session and get inspired! It's taking place on Wednesday 14th June in Bridgwater. Visit sparksomerset.org.uk/training for more details.

The Legal Minefield of Letting a House.
The law on letting a house changes all the time, and it’s all too easy to get caught out – and believe me if
you get caught out, the costs can be high. Many believe that you can simply find a tenant and move them in and pocket a comfortable profit; but it’s not that simple. Do you take a deposit? Have you reference checked your tenant? Do you know their legal immigration status? Have you provided your tenant with all the relevant certificates and information? What do you do if your tenant doesn’t pay? I know – it’s a lot of questions, and already your head is probably spinning, whilst asking yourself the question, “Is all this absolutely necessary?”. The answer is “Yes” – not only necessary, but a legal requirement. Fines for failure to comply can be as high as £10,000. Some cases can even carry a prison sentence, such as failure to provide a gas safety certificate. The best way to ensure you remain legal, and have a stress free way of letting your home, is to appoint a letting agent. They are specialists in the field and a good one can save you time, money, and stress. They often offer different types of let, including ‘Let only’ and ‘Full Property Management’. Be sure to discuss all the options and go with the option which suits you. If you’re currently letting a home without an agent – don’t panic. It’s not illegal to do so – but you could be falling foul of the law in other areas without realising it. Get in touch with a letting agent who can help you get legal, and stay legal. At Silver Island Properties, we specialise in Full Property Management; we deal with all the hassle and stress for a simple monthly fee – and it’s probably cheaper than you think. Cyber Attacks - Are you Safe?
As of 12th May 2017, the NHS has been hit by a large-scale cyber-attack, locking hospital staff out of their computers, and causing the delay / diversion of many emergency appointments. Systems such as patient records, appointment schedules, and internal emails and phone lines, have all been made inaccessible due to the attack. Investigations show the malware variant affecting NHS hospitals is “Wanna Decryptor”, a ransomware attack that encrypts and steals files from affected machines, and prompts the user to pay large amounts of money in order to retrieve the stolen files. While this has massively affected many NHS hospitals, it has also, reportedly, hit many other organizations as well, including some in the US, China, Russia, and more. Reports show that “up to 25 NHS organisations” have been affected. Hospitals run by East and North Hertfordshire NHS trust, Essex Partnership university NHS trusts, Barts Health in London, the university hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS foundations trust, Southport and Ormskirk hospital NHS trust, and Blackpool teaching hospital NHS foundation trust, are among those affected. The NHS is working with the National Cyber Security Centre, the Department of Health, and NHS England, to provide support for support affected organisations. For the latest, live updates on this, including the full list of affected hospitals, head over to: www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/39901370 This highly malicious type of infection is not uncommon among normal home users as well, and typically, files can only be saved if the user already had already backed them up, either on an external drive, or on the cloud (internet backup). Many family photo albums, and other indispensable documents, have been forever lost due to improper preparation for these kinds of ransomware attacks, and we urge anyone reading this, to ensure you have a working backup solution, and decent antivirus protection, before you get hit by one of these infections, if not the very same infection hitting the NHS We are able to provide on-site help and advice for those in the TA8 and TA9 postcode areas. Don’t miss out!
So, you’re in the market to purchase a property. You’ve sorted your finances, researched the location and have a list of ‘must have’ features that your new home needs. Armed with your ‘essentials’ you hit the estate agents, leaf through local papers and search online in a mission to find your next home. A focused mindset is part of a successful plan of action when buying property, but how can you be sure that there’s nothing you’ve missed? And what about the emotional impact of buying property that purchasers never experience with other financial investments like stocks and shares? “Talking to prospective buyers and examining their motivations to buy is a key part of a good estate agency’s service,” says Andrew Stoppani of Westcoast Properties in Burnham-on-Sea. “Getting to know them well means having the confidence to suggest properties that may initially be perceived to be out of their comfort zone. We understand that something that doesn’t fit on paper may be perfect with, for example, a small alteration like knocking down a wall or adapting a cupboard into a downstairs cloakroom. It may sound a bit bold, but it is surprising how far a little ‘outside of the box’ thinking can take you.” Buying a house can indeed be emotional – lots of people say they ‘just knew’ when they found their last home – and the reasons for this can be difficult to quantify. An intuitive estate agent understands this and is open to exploring creative solutions when supporting you in your property search. It’s not just house hunters who gain an increased perspective; sellers also benefit from this strategy. Andrew agrees: “Knowing what makes our buyers tick and perhaps offering something that they hadn’t thought of in exchange for a minor compromise means a greater audience for our vendors, increasing the opportunity to sell.” www.westcoast-properties.co.uk | www.propertymark.co.uk
