That is why we set such great store on the care we take with installation. Care that is reflected in the number of people who recommend us to their friends. We train our fitters thoroughly and expect them not only to take pride in their workmanship but in every other aspect of the Kingfisher service they help us provide. You will find them punctual, courteous, polite and tidy. As one of our customers, Noel Nation, puts it “....the workmanship was faultless and as a result we recommended them to our daughter .....” Kingfisher is a long established family firm and family values dictate the way we do business. FROM THE EDITOR

Welcome to this edition of Local Reach, this is a packed publication with information about coffee mornings, Trefoil Guild, details about how to celebrate the 40th Birthday of the Burnham WI, Walking Groups making the most of our beautiful landscapes and how to get involved in a Bat and Moth Walk at the Apex Park. With our local events groups setting up a host of events and activities throughout the year, there is plenty to keep us busy! We are extremely fortunate to have a vibrant and caring community and so much of it is down to volunteers who dedicate their time and energy to making projects succeed, I would like to thank everyone involved in putting together all the different events. From the arts projects, to pirate days or bubble rush to park run – there is never a day with nothing to do. Enjoy reading and enjoying some of the events to look forward to during May.

Editorial deadline for the June issue is Wednesday 10th May 2017 Jacqui Strong, Community Editor for LocalReach. jacqui@localreach.co.uk

New Found Lease Of Life

A new relationship and that contented feeling life is just happy for Chrissy a mother three. But six months into the new life Chrissy had gained 4 1/2 stone things were taking a toll when she went clothes shopping she found herself cutting size tags out the back of a clothes but still this was not enough to get her to do anything about her weight as she felt happy In December 2013 Chrissy went to her doctors for a health check and was told if she continued as she was going should be a serious risk of heart attack by the age of 50. Chrissy said this was her trigger I need to lose weight I tried lots of things before and Had always lost weight but I haven't learnt how to make those changes for life and to fit in with my now busy family of eight that's when I thought about slimming world I still felt very sceptical if this would even work or not. Chrissy joined a group in January 2014 and was relieved to see just how friendly everyone was and that her weight would be completely confidential. "I was amazed to hear just how much I could eat and how would it would still suit my family favourites like roast dinner cottage pie and curries, after that first week of following the plan and keeping myself full I was shocked to see I'd lost 8 1/2 pound I was finely changing those old eating habits of jars of sauces and packet foods and I've swapped to fresh home-cooked food I find myself loving cooking all over again. Seven months on a 6 1/2 stone lighter I have a happy Doctor, happy family and most of all a happy me I've ditched the inhaler now. I love walking and I have a new lease of life!" After keeping 6 1/2 stone off for 2 1/2 years Chrissy has decided to help others feel just how she is by becoming a slimming world consultant, she will be taking over the Burnham on Sea group at Jaycroft Road Old Court House every Tuesday at 5pm and 7pm. Everybody is welcome and if you'd like any more information about how to lose weight feel amazing and keep off for life please do contact her on: 01278 796100.

Why Everyone Should Be Having Regular Massage Treatments

Having a regular massage is a wonderful way of looking after yourself – body, mind and spirit. For example, it can be extremely beneficial in helping to sooth tired and aching muscles, relieve knots and tension, improve circulation, increase joint flexibility and can help with both the preparation for and recovery following workouts and sporting events. The healing qualities of massage can have also have an extremely positive effect on anyone suffering from anxiety and/or depression. It can help to calm the mind, promote relaxation and improve general mood. And breathe is excited to announce that the following treatments are now available: Hot stones massage. This is a wonderful treatment where the use of heat can help to reduce pain and stiffness in muscles, providing a deeper massage but without added pressure. It is extremely restorative, relaxing and calming. Pregnancy massage. During pregnancy, the body goes through many changes, physically and emotionally. We use a pre-blended massage oil safe for use during pregnancy to help maintain the condition of the skin and reduce stretch marks. This treatment will help relieve some of the common symptoms experienced during pregnancy whilst promoting relaxation and calm. Detox and Cellulite Reduction. This treatment is wonderful for improving the tone and condition of the skin, helping to breakdown and reduce both the appearance and texture of cellulite. Focusing on the legs and buttocks, the treatment begins with body brushing, followed by a skin smoothing exfoliation. Deep tissue massage techniques are then employed to work on breaking down the cellulite using pre-blended oils designed to aid the detox process and help with skin tone. Coming soon. Warm bamboo and deep tissue massage treatments will be available from May. Further details available on our website. And breathe is pleased to now be able to offer all clients over the age of 65 a £5 reduction off all massage treatments.

Independence in your own home with Suttons Stairlifts

If you have difficulty getting up and down stairs you are not alone. The decision to install a stairlift is sometimes a difficult one to take but, when compared with the alternative of moving, or living on only one level of their home, many people have found a stairlift to be their preferred solution. Suttons Stairlifts is a family-run business dedicated to providing a fair and ethical service with a nopressure selling policy. We offer a range of new or refurbished Handicare stair lifts, either straight or curved in the Somerset and Mendip area. We also offer a rental option for straight stairlifts as well as servicing and safety checks, repairs and removals. You are also choosing an ISO Quality approved product that conforms to the ethical business practices required by the British Healthcare Trades Association. It is a popular misconception that stairlifts are fitted to the wall, they are usually fitted to the staircase itself. Most lifts will only take between 2-4 hours to install. All Handicare stairlifts have safety sensors on the power pack and footplate; these are designed to stop the lift if it meets any obstruction. If there is a power cut your stairlift will continue to operate for approximately 10 trips using the internal batteries. Handicare stairlifts offer features such as a powered swivel seat and powered folding footplate; these can make using a stairlift even easier by allowing you to operate these functions at the touch of a button.. Even if you don’t need them now, they may be something you will benefit from in the future. We will visit you to survey the staircase and conduct a user assessment leaving you the leaflets and prices so you can make the decision in your own time. Whilst stairlifts are very simple to use they are mechanical devices and do require annual servicing and maintenance. With our inclusive and comprehensive 12 or 24 month warranty and 365 day coverage you can be assured of a first-class and personal service.

The Burnham Area Flower Club

Come along to a warm welcome held by the flower club on Monday 15th May, where we will have Allison Finch who will be doing and array of flower arrangements alongside a talk titled 'Well Read'. This will be a good night out, even better if you by some raffle tickets as this will give you a chance to win one of the arrangements at the end of the evening. The doors at St Andrews Church Hall are opened at 7pm where a free cup of tea or coffee along with a biscuit will be waiting for you. You will be able to have a look around at our excellent sales table which has a variety of flower arranging requirements at amazing prices. We also have a brilliant Plant Stall with a mass variety of plants where you are bound to pick up a couple of bargains. The Demonstration commences at 7.30pm and finishes about 9.15pm. The cost for a Visitor is £6.50, Members are free. An Annual Club membership is available for £37.00. If you enjoy flowers and a good night out you will not be disappointed. Tip of the month - Making the most out of your flowers When buying flowers ensure the ends of the stems are not brown or sticky as these are not fresh! Once you have chosen your flowers cut approx 1/2 inch from the bottom of the stems. Then take off all the lower foliage so that it is not in the water and place them in a bucket with flower conditioner for a minimum of 4 hours but overnight is preferable. They are then ready to arrange in Floral foam or in a vase. Arrangements in a vase should have the water kept topped up and replaced after 5 days. If the arrangement is in floral foam make sure you water it daily, you can check if you have put in enough water by putting your finger in the dish where you should feel the water. This will give you arrangements the best conditions and will look better and last longer!

The Legal Minefield of Letting a House.

The law on letting a house changes all the time, and it’s all too easy to get caught out – and believe me if

you get caught out, the costs can be high. Many believe that you can simply find a tenant and move them in and pocket a comfortable profit; but it’s not that simple. Do you take a deposit? Have you reference checked your tenant? Do you know their legal immigration status? Have you provided your tenant with all the relevant certificates and information? What do you do if your tenant doesn’t pay? I know – it’s a lot of questions, and already your head is probably spinning, whilst asking yourself the question, “Is all this absolutely necessary?”. The answer is “Yes” – not only necessary, but a legal requirement. Fines for failure to comply can be as high as £10,000. Some cases can even carry a prison sentence, such as failure to provide a gas safety certificate. The best way to ensure you remain legal, and have a stress free way of letting your home, is to appoint a letting agent. They are specialists in the field and a good one can save you time, money, and stress. They often offer different types of let, including ‘Let only’ and ‘Full Property Management’. Be sure to discuss all the options and go with the option which suits you. If you’re currently letting a home without an agent – don’t panic. It’s not illegal to do so – but you could be falling foul of the law in other areas without realising it. Get in touch with a letting agent who can help you get legal, and stay legal. At Silver Island Properties, we specialise in Full Property Management; we deal with all the hassle and stress for a simple monthly fee – and it’s probably cheaper than you think. For more information call Silver Island Properties on 01278 550257 or email: info@silverislandproperties.co.uk

Gardening Jobs For May

•Continue with any successional sowing just to make sure you have a range of crops to pick during the months ahead. • Hoe any weeds out regularly but take extra care not to damage any roots and stems of your cultivated plants. • Pull up any spring bedding plants that have finished flowering and prune back any shrubs and climbers that have flowered. • Clip hedges, such as privet, from now onwards and mow lawns regularly and weed and feed if you want to. • Tall perennials which require support should be staked and any new growth tied in. • Harden off any tender bedding plants and vegetables ready for planting out before the end of the month when night frosts should be over. • May is the month when serious pest attacks occur, inspect all your plants regularly. Slugs are active so take whatever precautions you are comfortable with to control them. Aphids multiply rapidly as the weather warms up so inspect indoor plants as well. • Crops sown earlier will be growing well now so look after them, weed and feed. Sow sweetcorn, courgettes, marrows, squash and pumpkins in individual pots for planting out later. For more tips why not join your local gardening group? The Burnham and District Horticultural Society meets at 7.30 pm on the third Monday of each month (except December) at the Community Centre, Berrow Road. The next meeting is on Monday 15th May 2017 with a talk from Susannah Applegate

Windows 10 April 2017 update plus Orange e-mail closure

Microsoft has recently released their latest update for Windows 10, called the “Creators Update”, which makes many small changes and improvements to various parts of Windows, as well as adding new apps and features. Also, all Orange-based emails will be closing down on 31 May 2017, more on this below. To check if you are already on the latest update, simply right click anywhere blank on your taskbar (bottom bar) on your Windows 10 machine, and ensure that the bottom option that pops up in the list of options reads exactly “Taskbar settings”. If found to read anything else, such as “Settings” or “Properties”, you need to update your machine now, to ensure the latest security and stability for your system. To update your machine, open your web browser and navigate to www.tinyurl.com/update-creators, click the “Update now” button, run the downloaded file, and follow the on-screen instructions to update your machine, a process which takes typically 40-90 minutes. Give us a ring on 07973 536299 if assistance here is needed. EE has recently announced in their “Orange Email Closure”, that a long list of email addresses will be killed off on 31 May 2017. EE states they have not given any customers an Orange email address since 2012, and make their reasoning behind this massive closure clear – many free email providers, offering more comprehensive email solutions at zero cost, have swept the attention of the vast majority, resulting in a steady and ruthless decline in the number of Orange email users over the past decade. While EE realises the inconvenience this may cause for many, they argue that in the long-run, their customers are better off moving on to better, more comprehensive email services. Your email will be closed down if it ends in any of the following: orange.net - orangehome.co.uk - wanadoo.co.uk - freeserve.co.uk - fsbusiness.co.uk - fslife.co.uk - fsmail. net - fsworld.co.uk - fsnet.co.uk Here at Computer Problem Solutions we can help you migrate all of your old emails safely to a new provider, and can help you set up your new email system, tailored to your requirements, including paid solutions such as Microsoft Exchange with an Outlook 2016 interface. Check for the Propertymark

It’s easy to assume that all estate agents are the same – after all, every agent advertises your home and collects a fee once the sale has gone through, don’t they? But such a complex legal and financial process isn’t as straightforward as it may initially appear, and as a consumer, how can you be sure that you are dealing with a competent, regulated and accountable organisation? It’s time to look for the Propertymark. In February 2017 NAEA (National Association of Estate Agents) evolved into NAEA Propertymark. Also within Propertymark are sister organisations ARLA Propertymark (lettings), NAVA Propertymark (valuers and auctioneers), NAEA Commercial (commercial and business transfer agents) and Propertymark Qualifications (offering specialist property qualifications). Propertymark’s aim is to improve the options available to customers seeking to buy, sell, let and rent property. Clients who choose an agent displaying the Propertymark have better protection: members belong to a Client Money Protection scheme, have Professional Indemnity Insurance, and are affiliated with an independent redress scheme. Agents with the Propertymark are subject to conduct rules and can expect disciplinary procedures and sanctions should they fall below these standards. “Propertymark is continuously working to raise professional standards within the property industry,” explains Andrew Stoppani of Westcoast Properties in Burnham-on-Sea. “As a Propertymark member, our staff at Westcoast Properties are qualified and trained, up to date with legislation and best practice and are obliged to adhere to a nationally recognised code of practice. Membership of Propertymark gives us the credibility of being part of the UK’s leading professional body for estate agents and demonstrates our ongoing commitment to providing an expert, proficient and compliant service for our clients.” www.westcoast-properties.co.uk | www.propertymark.co.uk

Prince’s Trust revamps hall with the help of Homes in Sedgemoor

The Prince’s Trust Team, run by Bridgwater and Taunton College, have completed a community project at Morland Hall, Highbridge, part funded by Homes in Sedgemoor who donated £500 and also supplied transport for the duration of the project. This project was part of The Prince’s Trust team programme, 12 week self-development designed to help young people not in education or training to build up their confidence, motivation, employability and team work skills, whilst also working towards a level one qualification. The programme involves a residential trip, a community project, work experience, a team challenge and a final presentation. Morland Hall was chosen after comparing potential projects in and around Bridgwater. The team felt Morland Hall and the vast amount of groups in the community that use it would benefit from their hard work more than other sites visited. The team managed to get local companies to supply twenty four tins of paint, two paint trays and two sets of brushes. They also held a car wash at the Bridgwater & Taunton College’s Cannington Centre and raised £42. The team were on site for eight days, decorating four bathrooms and the main hall. In the learning disabilities room they designed and painted lots of underwater themed creatures, plus Winnie the Pooh. The art work was amazing, with great attention to detail. In the main hall they designed and painted a woodland and animal themed mural. Their communication and team work improved throughout the project and they persevered when the painting become repetitive. Thank you to them all – Natasha Dyer, Morgan Cox, Ashleigh Heslop, Chloe Turner, Freddie Thomas, Tazmin West, Sarah Warr and Jasmine Sanders. 330pm until 430pm other events are listed on: www.naturaldevon.org.uk. www.slnp.org.uk

Let Nature Nurture you for the whole of the month of May! Month long campaign helps Devon and Somerset get active and feel good

This May will once again be known as Naturally Healthy Month, as Active Devon and Public Health at Somerset County Council coordinate its Naturally Healthy Campaign on behalf of the Devon and Somerset Local Nature Partnership. Building on the success of Devon’s previous campaigns, and with the help of Somerset Wildlife Trust and Somerset’s Areas of Outstanding Nature Beauty, this will be Somerset’s first year in the programme, and it is hoped that it will be as successful as it has been for Devon in previous years. Throughout the month of May, the participating organisations will be offering a wide range of activities and chances to celebrate their local ‘wild’ outdoor spaces, landscapes and environments and improve their sense of health and wellbeing. There will be something for people of all ages and abilities; from nature art and outdoor volunteering, to wildlife and singing walks– with a particular emphasis on supporting individuals who are less physically active, suffer with mental health issues or who feel isolated. Jim Hardcastle from Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty said “Our countryside gives us 'landscapes for life'. We know a visit to the countryside improves our mood and helps us to become more active. In Somerset we have three nationally protected Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty; the Mendip Hills, Quantock Hills and the Blackdowns. We're proud to play a part in Naturally Health Month and help people live life through these landscapes. The month of activities takes place during May and your closest venue will be at the Apex Park every Wednesday afternoon throughout May from 330pm until 430pm other events are listed on www.naturaldevon.org.uk. www.slnp.org.uk For advertising & leaflet delivery call 01278 238000 or visit www.localreach.co.uk
