Burnham-on-Sea & District Horticultural Society -Gardening Jobs for October Continue planting spring flowering bulbs, putting a handful of grit or sharp sand in the planting hole will help with drainage. Leave tulip planting until November. Towards the end of the month is the time when bare root plants become available. The soil is still warm and plants will establish easily at this time. This month is also a good time to plant evergreen hedging. Always prepare the ground well beforehand. Plant garlic and overwintering onion sets outdoors and sow some sweet peas indoors to produce strong plants to plant out in spring. Bring tender plants indoors and keep them on the dry side over winter. Keep a close eye on them and remove any dead foliage. Harvest squashes and pumpkins and collect seeds from beans. Make sure the seeds are dry before you store them. Clear away any bean sticks and garden stakes. If Brussel sprout plants are growing in an exposed position, stake them.

Next meeting is at 7.30pm on Monday 16th October at the Community Centre, Berrow Road when our speaker is Katherine Crouch - winner of BBC Gardener of the Year- ‘Plants that should be better known’.

Quiz Time! Thursday 19th October The Social Club Quiz this month is in aid of the Peter Gilliard Memorial School in India. How better to spend a Thursday evening than arguing with your team mates! Only £2 per person for a couple of hours of great fun, and the chance to show off your unique hidden stores of knowledge. You don't need to bring a whole team - your personal contribution will be in great demand. Come at 7pm for a prompt 7.30pm start, at the Highbridge Social Club, Church Street. Autumn Round up in the Garden

and crevices in patios and paths.

Your garden is one of the first things that a prospective buyer will see, so it is essential to ensure that it appears welcoming, well maintained and cared for throughout the year. Edward Creswick, of CJ Hole Burnham, offers some tips on how to keep your garden looking good this autumn. “It’s a well-worn cliché, but first impressions really do count, and presenting your garden at its best in the autumn brings particular challenges. Perhaps one of the most necessary but timeconsuming tasks is to clear dead leaves promptly and regularly once they start to fall. Keep your borders neat by cutting back perennials and clear away faded bedding plants. Weeds and moss also need to be removed from areas of gravel and chippings

Prune climbing plants, trim hedges, and cut back plants that are overhanging boundaries or pavements. Mow your lawn, but less frequently, and raise the height of cut as the growth rate slows down. Ensure that the edges of lawns are crisp and neat, and brighten up the garden by placing containers with fresh planting. It might take some effort, but a neat and colourful autumn garden will pay dividends in terms of the number of prospective purchasers who will be attracted to your property. For more information on selling your home this autumn, call us on 01278 780000.

Why is Apex Park so named?

The lakes you see today were originally pits where alluvial clay was dug for brick and tile manufacture. There were two brick and tile manufactures on this site; the first was The Apex Tile Company followed later by Colthurst & Symons. Clay was dug by hand with a spade. The next job was to wheelbarrow it to the mill house for grinding, where two shovels of sand were added. The resultant mixture was then put into the pug mill. This mix was cut into pieces for making tiles, pipes or bricks. Different clay was used for different products; hard brown for land drainpipes, soft brown for twenty hole bricks, and blue for roofing tiles. The cutter and his helper would then load the shaped clay onto a barrow and take it to the drying racks. From here the dried, formed clay was placed in a firing kiln for 90 hours using 10 tons of coal. The kiln had a capacity of 48,000 bricks. The worst job was clinkering, which had to be done before each burn, and in early days, a young lad had to wriggle through on the fire bars with a lump hammer and a chisel, knocking clinkers off as he crawled along. Originally the goods were moved locally by horse and cart, and further afield by road and river. Colthurst & Symons owned three clippers, which used the Highbridge Wharf. With the coming of the railway in 1858, two private sidings were installed - one for each company. Colthurst & Symons eventually bought out Apex. The First World War interrupted trade and marked a decline in the industry. After employing 85 men in the 1950s, Colthurst & Symons finally closed in 1966, bringing tile manufacture in this area to a close. This information is from the late Tom Cornish’s records. Tom was the last manager of these Brickworks.

Barbra Spencer - Author of Broken

Sit, Stretch and Sing

Known for YA thrillers, it was a surprise to find myself writing ‘Broken’, and investigating rivers and monasteries, peat moors, rhynes and clyces. Set in Street and Glastonbury, although both Burnham and Highbridge feature, my daughter swam for Street Swimming Club and when driving her to training we’d pass groups of youngsters sitting on the kerb, there being nothing to do in a small country town apart from staying in with mum and dad to watch telly. Although ‘Broken’ is an adult read, its main characters are Jem Love, a fourteen-year-old schoolboy, who tries to keep his family together after his mother overdoses; Katrina Jones, a hard drinking, wise-cracking, social worker and Spooky Jarvis, Street’s most famous hooligan, who runs foul of the law as often as he has birthdays. Funny, tragic, uplifting and heart-warming … As one reviewer said: Broken is a book that will break your heart and then restore your hope for humanity. Libraries Week

The Parkinson’s Support Group meets at the Catholic Church, Burnham-on-Sea on the second Monday of the month, 2pm - 4pm. We have speakers, quizzes, outings etc. We also aim to provide information and advice, a cuppa and a chat. On Monday 11th October we have a ‘Sit, Stretch and Sing’ session; a chance to listen and join in with some rousing shanties, and try some seated exercises (not at the same time!) Get Ready For An Autumn Sale

What makes autumn a good time to sell your home? Generally speaking, there are more buyers as people tend to be back from holiday. The children have returned to school giving harassed parents the chance to consider their next move and whilst there are no guarantees – this is the UK, after all – the weather can still be pleasant enough to show property in a good light. “The best offers come about when there are more buyers around, making now a good time to put your home up for sale,” agrees Andrew Stoppani of Westcoast Properties in Burnham-on-Sea. “We experience an increase in activity during September and October. Vendors should bear in mind, however, that people don’t tend to want to move over Christmas so it makes sense to get on the market sooner rather than later.” Improve chances of gaining offers by thinking about seasonal curb appeal. Give lawns a good rake and clear up stray leaves to ensure a tidy front. Clean out gutters and check if any exterior areas require a lick of paint. Inside, de-clutter, clean thoroughly, fix leaks and draughts and, if possible, have the boiler and central heating serviced by a professional. “It’s great when we can reassure buyers that all the relevant seasonal maintenance has already been done,” says Andrew. “On the subject of heating, we also recommend keeping an eye on the thermostat during autumn viewings. The temperature in this country can fluctuate so much during these months and you don’t want buyers to feel too hot or cold.” Speaking of climate, sunny autumn days still offer the opportunity for attractive photography that adds an appealing element to property details. “If you are thinking of selling your home come and see us in your local high street branch,” suggests Andrew. “We are here to help you make your autumn sale!” www.westcoast-properties.co.uk

Just around the corner are two major updates being released by both Microsoft and Apple that offer some exciting improvements to Windows 10 and Apple mobile products.

Microsoft will soon release the next big update for Windows 10 called the “Fall Creators Update”. Scheduled for release on 17th October, this will focus on stability improvements mostly. Meanwhile, Apple is releasing iOS 11, their latest mobile operating system that will be present on their new mobile line-up consisting of the iPhone 8, 8 Plus, and X. iOS 11 can be installed on many older Apple devices. More on this later. The latest Windows 10 update, while heavily focused on bug fixes and improving general stability, also offers new features to advance usability and customization. Some features include: • • • • •

Dozens of improvements to the Start Menu and Taskbar. Many more enhancements to Windows Settings. Microsoft Edge - Stability upgrades, a new favourites system, and better PDF support. General security enhancements to Windows. Recovery of Microsoft Account password from the lock screen.

iOS 11 is scheduled for arrival on 19th September, bringing improved performance, improved usability, and an array of new features over iOS 10. Anyone with an iPhone 5S, SE, 6, 6 Plus, 7, or 7 Plus will be able to upgrade to the latest and greatest IOS 11, along with any iPad tablet released 2013 or later (iPad mini 2 / iPad Air / iPad 5th Generation onwards), so anyone with these devices might want to keep an eye out for the update. New improvements are not limited to: • • • • •

Revamped Control Center, offering a customizable panel to easily control your device. Remove functions never used and replace them with controls relevant to you. Optional automatic driving detection - blocking texts and calls while on the go. Massive improvements to multitasking - A new app dock will be readily accessible by swiping up from the bottom of the screen, regardless of the current open app. Revamped Files app, allowing easy integration of numerous storage sources, such as iCloud, Dropbox, Google Drive, local files and more. Siri will be smarter, and sound more natural.

The Burnham Area Flower Club

Come along to the Flower Club on Monday 16th October; we will have National Demonstrator Lucy Ellis doing her flower arrangements, based on the title ‘Fusion National’. It will be a great intriguing night with great company. The doors at St. Andrew’s Church Hall open at 7pm, where a free cup of tea or coffee along with a biscuit will be waiting for you. Whilst having your refreshments why not have a look at the brilliant sales table which has many flower arranging necessities at great prices and an amazing plant stall with many different plants where you are bound to pick up a couple of bargains! The demonstration will start at 7.30pm and finishes about 9.15pm. The cost for a visitor is £6.50, members are free. An annual club membership is available for £37. If you love flowers and great company, come along, we look forward to seeing you there.

Huntspill News The Huntspill Art group continues to flourish, with a successful art exhibition this summer. We meet every other Wednesday afternoon at the East Huntspill Village Hall, 1.45pm. It’s £3.50, to include refreshment. Next sessions: 4th, 18th, October, 1st, 15th, 29th, November. Telephone: Brian (secretary) for more information: 01278 760759. Classical Music

Do you enjoy classical music and would like to know more? U3A’s three Music Appreciation Groups are open to anyone interested in the finest music, no matter how limited their knowledge may be. Every two weeks one of us presents a ‘Concert’ of CDs. Most members take a turn to present their choice of music, but nobody is obliged to do so. Most of us enjoy other people’s choices especially when there is at least one item we haven’t heard before. Since formation of the first group in 2013, we have ‘heard from’ all the great composers and many others. All of us have been introduced to ‘new’ music by the great masters – as well as to composers new to us. Listening together creates a great atmosphere. Our groups are very friendly without any trace of musical snobbishness. We meet together every two weeks from 1.45pm. Music begins at 2pm. We take a break around 3 o’clock, leaving the rest of the allotted time for more music. Discussion, which is inevitably a feature, can occur between items, so overall the presenter has to allow for about 1½ hours of music. Come and join us! WHAT’S IN YOUR JEWELLERY BOX?

Do you have a jewellery box full of items that you never wear? Clevedon Salerooms have been selling fine jewellery and watches for many years, but the arrival of the internet more than a decade ago has truly transformed the marketplace. Vendors now have direct access to a global market place that regularly sees bidders from China, Hong Kong, Switzerland and Russia to name but a few, compete for the choice lots at their Specialist Jewellery sales. To source jewellery for these Specialist Sales Clevedon Salerooms hold free valuation days, off site, and after the success of those held in Bristol by their Specialist valuers and the results they have borne, are now for the first time coming to Wells Town hall on the 9th October. The results speak for themselves. The owner of these two elements of a Heuer watch, the stainless steel case and dial, but otherwise lacking all workings, its glass and its strap, attended one of our valuation days and was more than delighted when a bidder parted with £7,400 for just the two parts of a watch! At the same sale held in June, the owner of this 114cm long muff chain set with turquoise and split pearls, designed to be looped through a muff for keeping one’s hands warm, was hoping for £1,000, but the Saleroom fell silent as two bidders pushed the price ever greater, the victor emerging at £6,450. If you would like a free no-obligation verbal appraisal of your jewellery, watches, silver and gold, why not come along to the Council Chamber at Wells Town Hall on Monday 9th October between 10am - 4pm where you will be assured of a warm welcome, and a cup of tea or coffee. For more information contact Toby Pinn, MRICS Chartered Arts & Antiques Surveyor at the Saleroom on 01934 830111.

Pennies make Pounds for St. Margaret’s Hospice in Burnham-on-Sea and Highbridge

Do you get home at the end of a day out and find you have a pocket full of loose change? You can help turn those unwanted pennies into pounds for St. Margaret’s Hospice. The idea is simple – order one of our household collection boxes for your home, place it in your home on the hall table or near your telephone, and fill it with your loose change to raise money for St. Margaret’s Hospice - all those unwanted pennies really do add up! Having one of our boxes in your home shows your support for our work in the community and generates much needed funds towards our services. Last year our home and business collection boxes raised over £30,000 for us. Terena Young, Fundraiser for Sedgemoor said, “A full day of delicious and nutritionally balanced meals for one of our patients at our hospice inpatient units costs £15. We’d love for you to start collecting your loose change in Burnham and Highbridge and help us raise enough to pay for our inpatients’ meals for a week; you will make such a difference to the families and patients we care for.” To request your home collection box, please call 0845 345 9671, or email Terena.young@st-margarets-hospice.org.uk Happy collecting!
