In Charley’s Memory: a valuable lifeline for the vulnerable…

One mother, one bitter sweet story, one ultimate aim. How a tragedy in Burnhamon-Sea has led to a remarkable lifeline for those suffering with mental health issues. In Charley’s Memory is a mental health charity which was founded and is based in Burnham-on-Sea. They provide free and confidential counselling services to over 30 young people aged 11-25 per week. They have an office in Manor Gardens and have a team of over 40 that organise events, and push to reduce and defeat the stigma of mental health. I have the honour of working with this charity and try as hard as possible to raise the awareness of mental health in the community, because the popular opinion amongst young people is that there is no help available that doesn’t belittle and label sufferers. The charity was officially registered under the number 1160805 in March 2015 but began in 2014, when one determined mother set up a charity in memory of her ‘beautiful boy’ Charley who completed the act of suicide on the 10th September after his battle with the invisible illness, particularly depression and OCD. Charley Marks, aged 18 when he died, received some help from outside agencies, but after his 18th birthday his depression became a daily battle that was intolerable. His mum, Jo Clement, said: “Charley would put on a face to those other than his friends and family.” She wants the public to “understand that mental health problems are not something to be ashamed of and should be addressed in a way that isn’t too clinical.” One of the ultimate aims of the charity is to set up ‘Charley’s Haven’ which would be a safe haven for sufferers and their family. The charity have recently set up ambassador programmes whereby people from the local area can participate in the charity and are given resources to help spread the popularity of ‘In Charley’s Memory’ and the work they do. If anything raised in this article has affected you or raised questions, then please do not hesitate to call ‘In Charley’s Memory’ or message them. Parkinson’s Support Group

The Parkinson’s Support Group meets at the Catholic Church, Burnham-on-Sea on the second Monday of the month, 2pm - 4pm. Come and join us if you are affected by Parkinson’s, or are maybe a carer, friend or family member. We are a friendly, fun group and try to offer something different to do each month. We have speakers, quizzes, outings etc. We also aim to provide information and advice, a cuppa and a chat. We are back on track in September with a speaker from the Somerset and Dorset Air Ambulance on 11th September. Our very informal singing group meets on the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month. This is at Southwell Hall, Highbridge, 10.30am. We would love more people to join us; the singing is purely for fun, with tea or coffee provided. £1 per person covers the cost of the hall and refreshments. Singing benefits the memory, the speech, the breathing and makes you feel good. Carole Ransome runs these sessions (01278 782428). Exercise is of great benefit in Parkinson’s and our class is on Wednesdays at the Lisa Jane dance studio, Highbridge at 10am. Run by experienced teacher Jenny Taylor, this is a programme of gentle exercise designed to suit those with Parkinson’s. Cost is £3, or £4 to non-members. This is an enjoyable hour-long session with music. For info, contact Jenny on 785653. For any group information, contact Christine Manners on 783696 / Malcolm Conyers on 01934 740282/ Kim Lewis on 787022.

Open to everyone, people of all faiths and none, Third Thursday offers a short simple church service with familiar and well-loved hymns, bible readings and prayers to feed and nourish the soul. Gardening Jobs for September Now is the perfect time to order bare-root plants like trees, fruit bushes and roses. You will have the widest choice and the plants will be available from late October onwards. If you have not done so already, pinch out the growing tips of tomatoes and remove old leaves. During this month the ripening process slows down so it might be better to pick all the fruit and ripen on a sunny window sill or in a drawer together with a ripe banana. Remember to keep deadheading your flowering plants to keep them going into the autumn. Water plants in greenhouses early in the day so they have time to dry out before evening. Close doors and windows in late afternoon to conserve any heat. The next meeting is on Monday 18th September when there will be a talk from Gina Merrett-Smith “Marianne North – A Victorian Botanical Artist”. All welcome. Members of the Society free, visitors £1.50.

COMMUNITY NOTICE BOARD

Valuation Versus Value

ESTATE agents’ market valuations are usually free, and because of this, it is very tempting for prospective sellers to invite several agents to carry out a market appraisal of their home and then select the agent that suggests the highest likely sale price for the property. However, Edward Creswick of CJ Hole, advises caution on this issue. Some agency valuers are paid a bonus based on the number of new instructions they secure, irrespective of saleability of the property which is then offered for sale at their suggested value. The easiest way for an estate agency valuer to win a seller’s business is simply to suggest a flatteringly high figure, but may people who fall into this trap live to regret it. One of the problems is that most people have only a cursory idea of what estate agents do and, just as importantly, what values they cherish and what service they offer. Ironically, it tends to be the cheaper, untrained or inexperienced agents who quote the highest values, and the well-trained experienced

agents who have the skills to secure the best prices for their clients in the shortest period of time. So, when selecting your estate agent, by all means invite several to comment on value, but rather than simply choosing the agent who gives you the highest valuation, perhaps choose the agent who has nearly 30 yearsexperience of the local property market, and who has a marketing plan in place, along with superb post-offer follow up facilities. Additionally, find an agent who you like and you can see yourself getting on with! One who has the integrity to offer straight talking advice and who uses superb conversation skills to keep you informed every step of the way before, during and after sale, thereby minimising the stress of moving. In estate agency, a high valuation does not always mean a high level of service! For more information on selling your home, give me a call on 01278 780000.

The area outside of the Somerset Skills and Leisure building will feature local dance groups, a ukulele band, martial arts demonstrations, a samba band, Punch and Judy, choral singers among many others from 10.30am until 5pm. The Ritz Social Club has a mix of comedy and acoustic music all day. We hope all members of our community will come and enjoy a fun-filled event.

Local residents to receive important voter registration information

Households in Sedgemoor will soon be receiving a form asking residents to check whether the information that appears on the electoral register for those living at their address is correct, as part of Sedgemoor’s annual voter registration canvass. The aim of the form is to ensure that the electoral register is up-todate, and to identify any residents who are not registered so that they can be encouraged to do so. Even if you voted at the recent General Election, we still need a response to the form. Louise Potter, Democratic and Elections Officer at Sedgemoor District Council said: “Anyone that wants to vote must be registered. To make sure you are able to have your say in any future elections, simply check the form when it arrives and return it as promptly as possible. If you’re not currently registered, we’ll send you information explaining how to do this or you can just go online to apply to register at www.gov. uk/register-to-vote .” It’s particularly important that anyone who has moved address recently looks out for the form and checks whether they are registered. Any residents who have any questions can contact the elections team at Sedgemoor District Council by calling 0300 303 7804.

Do property viewings and children mix?

With the school holidays well and truly upon us what happens to property viewings if you are selling or buying? Taking a toddler who has the propensity to tantrum unreservedly with you on a tour around what could be your next home can be daunting, not to mention highly distracting. And if you are hosting a viewing with potential purchasers how do you stop your home looking like a jumble of toys? When it comes to taking children on viewings there is no right or wrong – a lot depends on their age and temperament. “We always suggest doing whatever makes our clients comfortable,” says Andrew Stoppani of Westcoast Properties in Burnham-on-Sea. “For example, if a small baby or young child is going to be really distracting and prevent you from being able to concentrate on seeing a property properly, then arranging a playdate with a willing friend or relative may work best. Older children and teenagers, however, can often have practical input. If you are keen on a place it’s good to have them on board – after all, they’re going to be living there too and many parents value their opinion.” What if you are selling your home and are conscious of the daily detritus that accompanies small children when you are trying your best to keep the property show-home-ready? “If you are marketing your property as a family dwelling then a well-kept goal post on a neatly mowed lawn or a small, appealing gathering of clean cuddly toys on a tidy bed can simply add to the ambience,” says Andrew. “A rusty bike in the middle of a tangle of weeds, or an intricate building-block structure slap bang in the middle of the living room floor perhaps less so…” Children also have an uncanny knack of being able to demand your attention at the most inopportune times, which can be tricky if you are trying to show prospective buyers around. “With this one we’d suggest taking the children out if possible, leaving your estate agent to hold the viewing on your behalf,” suggests Andrew. “Generally, kids love an outing, and you can relax, knowing that proceedings are in competent and professional hands.”

‘Don’t bin that battery’ blaze plea

Gadget users are being urged “don’t bin that battery”, and to take other steps to avoid the risk of setting off a blaze in their rubbish bin that could endanger their home and family. The warning follows two asyet unexplained accidental fires in Somerset; one in a Chard rubbish bin threated a house and another in refuse added to the landfill site at Walpole near Bridgwater. All batteries need care as they hold the potential to "short" and create sparks, while their poisonous chemical cocktail means they should always be recycled rather than sent to landfill. But there are particular concerns about the many lithium-ion batteries used in mobile phones, cameras and other portable devices with high power demands. The power levels and light construction of li-ion batteries brings the risk of a fire or explosion if they get bent, broken or pierced when discarded into rubbish bins or black sacks. There is a high potential for a blaze that takes days to put out if batteries are crushed in a rubbish truck and buried in a landfill site, where decaying organic matter can cause rising temperatures. Recent years have seen a number of waste-related incidents, including fires in rubbish bins, refuse trucks and landfill sites, and even blaze deaths. Yet all batteries can be recycled. Many outlets, from most supermarkets to DIY and electrical stores, take batteries for recycling, and while not yet collected at the kerbside, batteries are taken at all Somerset recycling sites. A Somerset Waste Partnership (SWP) spokesman said: “Batteries are a real fire risk in your rubbish, especially the high power li-ion type, so recycling is the smart and safe option. And, since single-use batteries are a very costly and inefficient power source, better to use the mains or invest in rechargeable batteries to save money, resources and time.” Batteries are among several waste fire hazards that should not be added to rubbish, including: • Hot ash from fires or barbecues, or the not fully extinguished contents of ashtrays; these must be damped down fully or allowed to cool completely. • Broken glass that can act as a magnifying lens in landfill if not carefully wrapped. • Aerosols that can get hot or be pierced or crushed during collection and landfilling. • For more on how to recycle and stay safe, see www.somersetwaste.gov.uk

We offer FREE quotations for any of your unwanted and broken gold. We also offer a range of other services including: jewellery sales, repairs, cleaning & polishing. Home visits available by prior appointment.

Understanding how storage works in Microsoft Windows

Being able to properly work with files and folders is an important part of using your computer. In our years troubleshooting, we have found that a large number of customers are unaware of where their files are getting saved, which makes basic tasks needlessly stressful and confusing. Once the basic use of files and folders are understood, the user can feel more confident, and everything becomes easier as a whole. Folder navigation is like a filing cabinet – everything is organised and structured, but you need to understand how it works before you use it! The first step is understanding File Explorer. This is simply the name given to the tool that helps the user navigate their computer files and folders. On Windows 7, 8, and 10, you can spot your File Explorer icon, by simply looking for the beige/sand-coloured folder symbol (with a blue ribbon) near the left side of the taskbar (bar at the bottom of your screen). If you press the Windows key (usually two buttons to the left of the space bar) and E (both pressed at same time) on your keyboard, this also opens File Explorer and works on all version of Windows. With File Explorer open, the layout is quite simple – the panel on the left lists the main areas of your computer, while the larger section on the right shows the contents of the current folder. Upon first opening File Explorer, your library folders are initially displayed for the sake of easy navigation. Library folders are considered your “main” folders, which include Documents, Pictures, Downloads, and more. Double click on these to navigate to them. You can also find links to these folders on the left panel under the “Computer” or “This PC” section. By clicking on “Computer” or “This PC” on the left panel, your main drives and media are displayed, each with their own “drive letter” – A drive letter is assigned to each Disk on your computer, your DVD drive, and any attached USB drives. This page is useful for folder navigation, and for checking disk usage (the blue/red bars represent free space per storage device). Drive C: is your computer’s main hard disk. Drive E: might be your USB drive for example. Double click on Drive C: to start navigating your main disk. In here, the “Windows” folder is where all of your Windows files are kept that keep the machine running properly. If you enter the “Users” folder, you will see your main user folder, similarly named to your user account – “John” for example. You will see folders for all users on the computer. By double clicking your user folder, you are now shown all of the files and folders that belong to you – this list will include your “library” folders as mentioned above. With this knowledge, you should find it much easier to locate your files, and save files to specific folders when prompted in the future. We can provide basic training if you are struggling to grasp these core aspects of Windows, just give us a ring on 01278 787846. The Windmill Bar And Bistro Earns 2017 Tripadvisor Certificate of Excellence

The Windmill Bar and Bistro at Edithmead are delighted to announce that we have been awarded a 2017 TripAdvisor® Certificate of Excellence. Now in its seventh year, the achievement celebrates hospitality businesses that have earned great traveller reviews on TripAdvisor over the past year. Certificate of Excellence recipients include restaurants, accommodations and attractions located all over the world that have continually delivered a quality customer experience. “TripAdvisor is excited to announce the recipients of the 2017 Certificate of Excellence, which celebrates hospitality businesses that have consistently received strong praise and ratings from travellers,” said Heather Leisman, Vice President of Industry Marketing, TripAdvisor. “This recognition allows us to publicly honour businesses that are actively engaging with customers and using feedback to help travellers identify and confidently book the perfect trip.” The Abrahams family took over the running of The Windmill Bar and Bistro in 2015 and immediately carried out a full upgrade of the facilities including the complete refurbishment of the dining area and bar, and the installation of a brand-new kitchen and outdoor terrace area. Our talented Chef Mick White joined the team not long after, bringing with him a wealth of experience. Whilst learning his trade Mick spent time on-board the prestigious QE2 (flagship of the Cunard Line) and travelled to Switzerland to work at The Hotel Royal in Crans sur Sierre. “Mick continues to provide excellent menus for us and has always been a huge asset to our team. We couldn’t be happier to receive this certificate and would like to thank everyone who has taken the time to review The Windmill Bar and Bistro. We have a fantastic team here working under the guidance of Sally Abrahams and it is brilliant to have all of our hard work recognised” says Julie Simmons, Bar and Restaurant Manager at The Windmill Bar and Bistro.
