Goathurst Pre-school Celebrate St. David’s Day On Monday 3rd March, the children at Goathurst Pre-school celebrated St. David's Day. They came to pre-school wearing Welsh colours and brought in Welsh items from home. Philippa Kingston (mum to one of the children), spoke to the children about the story of St. David and taught them to say 'Good Morning' in Welsh. She showed them traditional Welsh items, such as the Welsh dragon, daffodils, leeks and traditionally crafted wooden love-spoons. Emily was dressed up in a traditional Welsh costume and Benji wore his own Welsh Rugby shirt. The children then painted daffodil pictures.

Health & Well-being Is It True? Have you ever been tempted to try out a new diet? Have you been on a diet all of your adult life? Do you believe in healthy eating, or are you simply grateful to have something to eat? Do you try all the latest fitness trends? Do you read all the latest reports? Do they excite you, worry you, or frustrate you? This year alone studies have suggested that sedentary behaviour and eating high protein diets are more dangerous to health than smoking. I’m sure like me you have wondered if this scientific research has been shared correctly or understood by the general public or if the message that people will take from this is that it’s ok to smoke if you are active?! I spent the majority of my 20s on a diet, and my early 30s fighting with science and theory; vowing to try out every new fitness craze and diet on the market. More recently I have chosen to change the TV channel, turn the newspaper page or scroll down on the computer screen when I see the next revolutionary diet which promotes overnight results and promises of amazing results with little effort or change in

behaviour. There isn’t much I haven’t tried, and I’m sure many local people will have seen the transformation my body has taken in the past ten years as a result of this lifestyle abuse. It would be professional suicide for me to sit here writing a controversial article without some back-up from scientific research or measurement. However, I am more than willing to put my professional conscience on the line to tell you this ….. keep it real - beat the marketing promises and understand this simple equation, which most fitness professionals, health experts, and medical gurus will agree with: First comes health then comes fitness, and quite simply, get more active before you start planning unrealistic fitness goals. What you put on the inside will show on the outside; if you eat more calories than you burn you will gain weight! Learn more about nutrition, and that a calorie can be measured in terms of nutritional value and energy, not just a number towards your daily allowance. All addictive substances legal or otherwise are bad for you, and stress, over-consumption, and lack of activity and quality macro and micro nutrients will have a long-term detrimental effect on your health and wellbeing!

Support for Jobseekers Jobseekers in Bridgwater have been put through their paces recently, when employers kindly supported them by hosting job interviews to prepare them for the real thing. Pluss - a social enterprise which supports people into employment, is working in partnership with Sedgemoor District Council, to help prepare jobseekers ready for their forthcoming interviews. Each candidate was asked to prepare for their interview by researching their chosen company, preparing answers to commonly asked questions and also preparing questions of their own to ask the employer. Caroline Derrick, the council’s Learning and Development Manager, and Laura Fowler, the council’s Employment and Skills Outreach Worker, were impressed by the candidates and gave each one positive feedback after their interview. Pluss Job broker, Sarah Boobyer, organised the event to help support jobseekers in preparing for their interviews. She said: “I would like to thank Caroline and Laura for their support. Interviews can be terrifying at times but there are a lot of things a jobseeker can do to prepare and ensure that they give themselves the best possible chance of performing well on the day and making a good first impression with the employer.” Handy tips for preparing for interviews: • Research. Before the interview find out everything you can about the company. Look on the internet, read the employer’s literature, talk to friends and colleagues. You should know what the company does, what the job involves, and who are company’s competitors are. • Find out where the interview is and decide how you are going to get there. The last thing you want is to be trying to find the place when you are nervous and worked-up. Check parking. • When confirming the interview with the employer, it is a good idea to find out who/how many people will be interviewing you. Also do you need to take ID such as a passport? • Think about what you are going to wear. It is important to look clean and smart. It is common practice to wear a suit to an interview. You should also make sure you are comfortable.

Try to think what questions the interviewer may ask you and try to prepare answers. • List some questions to ask the interviewer. Towards the end of the interview, the interviewer will usually ask if you have any questions. It is best to think of some questions, as otherwise the interviewer may think you are not interested in the position or that you have not prepared. Flood Loans Available Owners and occupiers of flood damaged properties should always in the first instance contact their insurers. Sedgemoor District Council (SDC), in partnership with Wessex Homes Loans, however, is able to provide Flood Loans of between £1,000 and £15,000 to Sedgemoor residents whose homes have been flooded or subjected to severe storm damage where the costs are not recoverable through insurance. Works typically included in the scheme are: Plumbing work; electrical work; roof repairs; replacement guttering and facias; replacing rotten or draughty windows; central heating replacement; damp remedy; updating kitchens and/or bathrooms (which are assessed as ‘unfit for purpose’); replacing insecure external doors. Applicants must own and occupy the property as their sole residence and as their only or principal home, and must be over 18. The applicants must have sufficient disposable income to cover the loan repayments and must have sufficient equity in their property to secure the loan. The applicant’s property must be subject to recent flooding or severe storm damage or the applicants must live in a location with a high likelihood of flooding as determined by SDC in consultation with the Environment Agency. Wessex Home Improvement Loans make no charge at any stage of the process. Residents can repay their loan at any time without paying a penalty. If you are interested in applying for a Flood Loan of up to £15,000 or would like more information, please contact Sedgemoor District Council on 0845 4082540 or local rate 01278 435435. Alternatively please email swelt@sedgemoor.gov.uk.
