From the editor

Hello to all our readers! Can you believe it’s July and we’re half way through the year already? I do know someone who is actually on the countdown to Christmas, but I know I’m certainly just going to enjoy the summer while it lasts – and even if it’s a rainy one, at least we can enjoy the longer, lighter days and evenings. This is the month the children break up from school, and I hope you have holiday plans either here or abroad, whether it’s day trips, a package holiday or visits to the park. There are many events and activities going on in our area which will be great fun for adults and children, so be sure to read through and make a note on your calendars of the ones which take your fancy. Thank you to everyone who sent me information about these events and fundraisers – please keep them coming in! Until next time, I hope you enjoy reading the magazine. Catherine, Community Editor cath@localreach.co.uk Deadline for the August issue is Wednesday 10th July.

It’s also a great place to take the children to give them some time in the outdoors, exploring the paths between the flower borders, the sub-tropical walk, and discovering the weird and wonderful plants and foliage within the Botanical Glasshouse – with arid, subtropical and tropical specimens creating wonder and intrigue. There are also many family-friendly events on at the Gardens through the summer months, so make sure you find out about those while you’re there, as the Gardens are for everyone in the community and beyond to enjoy. Westonzoyland Aviation Museum

This museum is affiliated to South West Airfield's Heritage Trust, and are exhibiting at the ‘Wings and Wheels’ event being held at Dunkeswell Airfield on 17 August. Local historian Ian Harris, has amassed an extensive photographic archive

of one the oldest small airfields in the country, which depict the Summer Camps under canvas which were established for many months right up to the outbreak of war, and the early jets which were based there right up to its closedown in 1958. Supporters are hoping to set up a permanent memorial centre to honour the memories of the thirteen pilots and crew who died after flying out of RAF Westonzoyland.

BRI-Town Team The BRI-Town Team, in partnership with Bridgwater Town Council and TownGuideApps, have launched a free smart phone technology driven service to benefit visitors to the town and the people of Bridgwater. Through the Town Guide, retailers and other businesses can offer customers special offers and detailed information of their products and services, boosting

business and encouraging trade. A range of events are being organised in the Town Centre to encourage the Bridgwater community to come and see what is on offer, and the next event is ‘Independents Day’ on 4 July, to recognise how vital small shops are to a healthy high street. Bach at his Best!

What a shame that greater numbers did not attend Bridgwater Choral Society’s recent performance of the Bach B Minor Mass in St. Mary’s Church. One of the greatest choral works of the Baroque period, Bach’s Mass is an immense test of stamina for singers and instrumentalists alike and congratulations must be extended to musical director Iain

Murder and Mystery! The Bridgwater Hospital and Community League of Friends are staging a Murder Mystery

Cooper for bringing together such an excellent performance. The audience were treated to the vocal sounds of five excellent soloists: Eleanor Ross and Mary Morgan soprano, Fiona Mackay alto, Paul Smy tenor and Szymon Wach bass. The orchestra under Brigid Kirkland-Wilson were kept very busy throughout the evening and achieved a light, dance-like style through their well-controlled articulation. Particular mention should be made of the fine, high trumpet playing required for some choruses, adding an exciting brilliance that made the music come alive at its majestic climaxes. It was also a treat to hear the rich, warm tones of the oboe d’amore accompanying an alto and bass solo. The evening came to a successful close with the stately Dona nobis pacem, where the Choir produced a pleasingly serene and sustained sound to end a truly great work. Written by Frances Webb Supper at North Petherton Community Centre on Friday 16 August, 7pm. Tickets are £12.50 each, and include a two course buffet. Call 01278 685550 to book yours!
