From the editor
Welcome to the July issue of LocalReach! We’ve finally hit the summer months, but it’s still anyone’s guess as to what kind of summer we’ll have. Back at the beginning of June, my family and I enjoyed a day on the beach in Woolacombe, and even ventured into the sea, without wetsuits, so I’m hoping for some more glorious days like that, where we can be outside enjoying the facilities and beaches in our local area, especially when the children break up from school at the end of the month. Recently I’ve received some lovely feedback from contributors to the magazine, and would like to thank everyone who continues to send in details about their local events/charity fundraising etc. It’s a great way to share the information to people in and around the town, and I’m glad it’s proving useful. Until next time, Catherine. August issue deadline is Friday 4th July. Cath Davies, LocalReach Community Editor. cath@localreach.co.uk

One of the most common things I hear from clients in my clinics is that they wish they had an ‘off switch’ to completely turn off their unwanted thoughts, behaviours, symptoms etc. This could range from things like feeling the stress of work, insomnia, anxiety, obsessive conditions, intrusive thoughts and compulsions, to over eating to name but a few. If only it were that simple. I like to think of it as more like a dial than a switch, that we can start to turn down notch by notch until you are where you want to be. Through getting an understanding on the neuroscience behind what is actually happening in the brain and reducing overall anxiety levels (perceived or not), clients start to regain control in all areas of their lives. Many find that they even start having new ideas, ambitions and goals as they move along through therapy, once that noise in the brain has started to cease, allowing the more creative, intellectual and logical side to show itself again. Relationships in all areas tend to improve as general feelings of positivity, health, happiness and well-being start to reappear, which may have been hidden beneath turmoil and stress for some time. I have clinics in Burnham-on-Sea, Taunton and Bridgwater, so why not take the first step by calling me today on 07795 561905/ 01278 788394.

Bridgwater Flower Club The Bridgwater Flower Club meets on the second Tuesday of each month (except August and December this year). In July 1954 the club was formed by a small group of women supported by their husbands to promote the art of flower arranging. So, as you may have gathered, this year is the 60th anniversary of our flower club. The club grew gradually until there were about 67 members in the 1970s and 80s, but unfortunately due to various reasons we are now only 32 members. We are always delighted to welcome visitors and new members on the demonstration evenings. We have already experienced excellent demonstrations since March by qualified area demonstrators, and in July we are lucky to have been able to book Irene Hickson with her title of Celebrations. We do hope more people will join us on the 8th July at Westfield Church Hall (opposite the fair field) when the doors open at 7pm. The demonstration will commence at 7.30pm. We also have a plant stall, floral sundries sales table, and a raffle for the designs created during the evening. We do hope you are able to come and sit and enjoy the demonstration!
Quiet Prayer On the first and third Tuesday of each month, we meet for quiet prayer at Whiddon House, Daws Lane, North Petherton, from 7pm to 8pm. Everyone is welcome. Please contact Kate Smart on 01278 662061 for details.

Me Time - By Hannah Chaudhri I’ve felt in such a rush this year, and for the first time ever I’m starting to feel my age; I wake up tired and my body doesn’t recover as efficiently as it used to. I often feel like I live my life on a hamster wheel rushing from A to B. My son asked me a leading and innocent question a few weeks back: “Who looks after you Mum?” It made me stop and think about looking after myself. I’d fallen prey to the bug, you know, the modern day bug that the doctor tells you antibiotics don’t work for; the bug is called ‘you, them, everybody except ME’! I’d forgotten how to relax, and take some me time; I’ve always been lively and liked to accept the challenge no matter how busy. Being asked who took care of me made me acutely aware of how I’d lapsed from taking time out to refresh, reflect, rejuvenate and in my case sit down to take care of me, and my health. So, how do you relax? Do you ever take ‘me time’? The great news is - anyone can do it and it needn’t cost a penny! Read a book, have a bubble bath, do some exercise, go for a walk, chat with a friend, spend some time in the garden, or nearby park, meditate, reflect, pray, dance, sing, write - whatever works for you. I hear you screaming but I’m too busy - me too! If you live in a busy household this can be challenging; I often get up before my son to enjoy 30 minutes of quiet ‘me time’ before the morning school rush. Sometimes I exercise, but mostly I just sit quietly and have a cuppa, thinking about all the good things I have in my life. Make it an essential part of your wellbeing to find a special time a few times a week that are just ‘yours’, and very quickly you will enjoy the benefits of caring for you. If you have any questions please contact me: @Facebook/HannahChaudhri

Cashless Parking Customers may use their debit/credit card to pay for parking via their mobile telephone rather than use coins to buy a ticket. This is a useful alternative to Pay and Display parking as customers no longer need to find the correct change, can receive a reminder text when their limit is near expiry and can then extend their stay without having to re-visit the car park. The system has been operating within Sedgemoor for a few weeks and has proved popular with commuters and tourists. The service costs 14p in addition to the ticket price. Full instructions are displayed on the side of each Sedgemoor car park ticket machine. For a list of Sedgemoor car parks please visit www.sedgemoor.gov.uk.
Sedgemoor Lifeline Sedgemoor District Council are pleased to announce that Sedgemoor Lifeline has passed its annual Telecare Services Association audit (TSA) with flying colours. This audit is carried out annually to ensure that Sedgemoor continues to provide quality standards for service delivery to our customers, which in turn assures service-users, their families and carers, that they are in receipt of a quality service they can rely on. A Lifeline is a device with an emergency call button, provided along with a pendant, which is connected to your telephone line. Sedgemoor Care Centre is staffed 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year by highly trained and dedicated staff. For further information, please call 0845 408 2540.
Saturday Club Everyone is welcome at North Newton Saturday Club, held every week at the Village Hall – 10.30am – 12.30pm. It’s a great chance to meet up for a chat, with tea, coffee, cakes and biscuits, plus crafts, stories, fun and games for the children. For further details, call Jill Simon on 01278 662822.

Somerset Rebels Speedway Speedway riders are the modern-day gladiators of the sporting world, 4 riders per race going head to head on 500cc motorbikes over 4 laps of the shale-based oval track, the bikes accelerating from 0-60mph in just 3 seconds, faster than an F1 racing car, but have no gears and NO BRAKES! The Somerset Rebels are one of a number of speedway clubs that operate in the UK from Plymouth in the south to Edinburgh in the north, their Oaktree Arena track being situated just off junction 22 on the M5, they race their home matches most Friday nights throughout the speedway season that operates from mid-March until the end of October. Formed in just 2000, the Somerset Rebels currently operate in the sport’s Premier League, which is the 2nd tier of racing in the UK, their Oaktree Arena track, which is 300 metres in length, is widely acknowledged to be one of the best speedway tracks in the UK, a fact borne out by the fact that Sky Sports are annual visitors to the track in order to broadcast one of the Rebels home matches, and will, once again, be bringing their cameras to the Oaktree Arena on Tuesday 11th June. A speedway meeting comprises 15 heats of pulsating action of what must be one of the most extreme spectator sports in the UK, but it is also one that appeals to fans of all ages, from 1-91! Somerset meetings get underway at 7.30pm, but from when the gates open at 5.30pm until 7pm fans can enter the pits where you can watch the riders prepare their bikes, take photos and also have a chat to the riders – what other sport can you get ‘up close and personal’ with the main people. Kids can also apply to be meeting mascots or hold birthday parties in the Oaktree Clubhouse adjacent to the track. Looking for a team bonding night out or something different to treat your staff then have a look at the Rebels website to see our offers and discounts or just simply email us. So why not give it a try, we know that you won’t be disappointed……… www.somersetrebels.co.uk

Easy Advice for Those Going Al Fresco – by Nick Cater Whether celebrating the World Cup or just enjoying any sunny weather that comes our way, families and friends in Bridgwater are sure to be heading for the garden, beach, park or festival this month, to enjoy a spot of al fresco dining or a classic barbecue. That eating and drinking, especially when away from home, can make a lot of waste, with cans, plastic and glass bottles, and leftover food all too easily chucked together in black sacks to head for the refuse bin and costly, polluting landfill. Yet a few minutes’ planning means anyone can score their own World Cup hat-trick by ensuring less waste and more recycling, and even save money by making the best use of any food or drink. Among the simple tips: • Plan the party to minimise waste, and make the most of leftovers. • For food waste, compost what you can, and put the rest in the recycling bin. • Recycle empty food and drink cans, and the glass and plastic bottles. Know the numbers coming, to avoid making or bringing too much food or drink, and limit food waste by keeping it in the fridge or cool box until needed. Ensure it is covered, and do not overfill people’s plates. Anything uneaten can then go back into the fridge or freezer for delicious snacks or tasty later meals. Another simple way to reduce waste or unnecessary recycling is avoiding over-packaged products. So why not try jugs of water or squash, not individual cartons or cans, and home-made food rather than shop-bought supplies. Got more waste for recycling than can go in your kerbside boxes? For small amounts, put them in carrier bags beside the boxes; for large quantities, separate the materials and take them to Bridgwater Saltlands Recycling Centre, which is now open 8am - 4pm seven days a week. Have a great day! Nick Cater is Senior Communications Officer at Somerset Waste Partnership, which manages waste and recycling services on behalf of all local authorities in Somerset: www.somersetwaste.gov.uk.
Green goals: eat, drink and be less wasteful.
