Welcome to the June issue of Bridgwater LocalReach. As usual I have been inundated with information about local events and groups, and we do try to fit in as much as possible. Apologies if your information hasn’t made it to print this time, but please do keep sending it through – it just goes to show how much is going on in and around the Bridgwater area! I hope you all managed to enjoy the May bank holiday weekend; there were many May Fairs and other festivities taking place, and June is also proving a popular month for events, so please keep the magazine for reference throughout the whole month. Building Better Buddies The Building Better Buddies project aims to train older men as volunteers to encourage and support other older men to live more active and fulfilling lives. This is achieved using the concept of the ‘health and wellbeing buddy’ – somebody who can support, organise and promote activities to others. The programme offers a unique volunteer training package, which you – as a volunteer – will be trained in. This will give you the skills, confidence, support and information to develop your buddy role. A Musical Kaleidoscope In aid of Somerset Flood Relief Fund Friday 13th June at Bridgwater Methodist Church, Monmouth Street, 7.15pm This musical event features Winds of Change, an instrumental group whose members are from local churches. The band celebrates 25 years in Bridgwater this year. They play a wide variety of music, ranging from Beatles numbers to film and TV music. Winds of Change have a truly different style, which includes pop, folk, jazz, rock. The instruments are wide-ranging too – saxophones, brass, mandolin, electric/ bass guitars, drums and…swanee whistle! With some original music as well, this combination makes a unique and exciting sound. PLUS - the BEES young entertainers from Burnham will be performing extracts from The Little Mermaid. Plus Coraley and the beautiful sound of her flute. Calling all Gardeners! Gardeners are no doubt planning their gardening year ahead and itching to get out into their gardens. Garden Waste Collection is a service on offer in Sedgemoor, and could be blooming useful! Sedgemoor District Council is inviting residents to sign up to garden waste collections at a cost of just £46.50 per year. Those signing up to the scheme will receive 25 collections a year, when their garden waste will be picked up from their homes. Customers signing up have the option of receiving a green wheelie bin for their garden waste or garden waste sacks at a cost of £25 for ten bags. Having your garden waste collected can save time and fuel and can prevent mess in your car. Every bit of Sedgemoor’s garden waste is turned into Revive soil conditioner. Static Bike Ride for Charity On Saturday 26th April, Somerset Rural Youth Project (SRYP), in partnership with 1610 Leisure, held a 1000km sponsored static bike ride challenge in five 1610 centres across Somerset. The event was planned and delivered by SRYP’s young people’s fundraising group, assisted by staff from SRYP and 1610. Young people won prizes for the most km cycled, including a month’s free gym membership and various 1610 merchandise kindly donated by the centres. Ross Scott, aged 20, won first prize by riding a staggering 100km throughout the day. In total across the five centres, 30 young people, volunteers and staff rode 1002.27km, raising approximately £260 which will directly benefit young people involved in SRYP’s various projects. There are plans for the newly formed relationship between SRYP and 1610 Leisure to lead to more partnership working and possibly more fundraising events in the future. Church Fete St. Mary’s Church Fete (North Petherton), will take place on Saturday 28th June in the Church Grounds, from 2pm - 4pm. (In the Community Centre if it’s raining.) The theme this year is the ‘Roaring Twenties’, and it will be opened by Emma Britton from BBC Somerset.

Brainwave Variety Show This Variety Show on 6th and 7th June, takes place at Bridgwater Town Hall and is performed by the J H Variety Performers & Kids (aged 14 – 70 and 6 – 14). The show contains a variety of music and dance from Shrek, Hairspray, Oklahoma musicals, to Beyonce, Bruno Mars and Cliff Richard. There will also be lots of comedy, a ventriloquist, opera singer, and raffle. The curtain goes up at 7.30pm with non-stop entertainment until 10.30pm, and is suitable for ages 8 plus. The seating is suitable for wheelchair users, but due to fire regulations, mobility scooters are not admitted. Tickets are only £7.50 each, and available from Strings n Things, Bridgwater, or through Brainwave, by calling 01278 726927. All the funds for this show are raised by the J H Variety Performers, so that ALL the proceeds from the evenings are donated to the Brainwave charity. The J H Variety Performers were established in 2000 & have now donated over £60,000 to local charities including Brainwave, Musgrove Park Hospital, The Beacon Centre & several others.

Time for a Knit & Knatter! Held in the Victoria Park Community Centre café, the Knit & Knatter Group meet every Tuesday and Thursday morning, from 10am – midday. They are drop-in sessions – just say hello, pull up a chair, and get knitting! All levels of skill are welcome, as we all help each other and share experiences, knowledge and patterns (within copyright), and we also do some charity work.

Pumping Station Come and find out about land drainage on ‘The Levels’ at Somerset’s first steam powered pumping station, as featured on BBC Countryfile. Moorland & Fordgate Community Hub is Open for Business! The Community Council for Somerset has been working with Sedgemoor District Council to open a community space for Moorland and Fordgate. As a result of the recent flooding the village hall is unusable and undergoing a huge refurbishment. Whilst the residents are dealing with the flood recovery there was a recognised need for a welcoming community space somewhere for residents. Local resident Adrian Dunbar organised a free facility from Portakabin. SDC arranged for the mobile unit to be set up and CCS have kitted the Hub out and are managing the facility. Now open and available to the residents the Moorland & Fordgate Community Hub is a space to find information, chat, have some time out, meet organisations, ask questions, meet with neighbours and have a cuppa. You can find grant information sheets, dates and times for the flood relief centre, and information on the Somerset Village Agents working in your area.

Risotto Recipe The start of the British asparagus season is a moment of great celebration. We love it! It is such a short season though that we are always looking for new ways to enjoy this most English of treats. Ingredients: 2 decent sized bits of chicken (approx. 2 breasts) – cold leftovers are perfect. Chop these up into 1” chunks. 250g of risotto (sometimes labelled carnaroli) rice. 8 stems of asparagus, trimmed into 1” sections (option to prepare tips at about 3” long to present like the picture). 2 shallots or one medium white onion – this needs to be very thinly diced. 1 or 2 gloves of garlic (to your own taste) – crushed. 250ml of white wine. 1 to 1.5 litres of chicken stock (again this dish works particularly well if you have recently had a roast chicken and made stock form the carcass) . 50g butter, olive oil, salt and pepper and some grated Parmesan to serve. If starting with raw chicken, then stir fry this until cooked through and then set aside. Bring your stock up to a simmer, then melt the butter in the same pan as you used for the chicken and fry your shallots and garlic on a low heat so you don’t add any colour. Add the rice and stir well so all coated. Turn the heat up to medium and after two or three minutes stop stirring. Add the wine and cook until all the alcohol has been burned off, grab your ladle and add a ladle full of hot stock to the rice. Stir very gently. Keep a close eye on it and keep repeating the process of adding a ladle and heating it until it has all been absorbed. When you think you are about two ladles from been done, heat about 0.5” inch of water in a wide pan, and cook your asparagus until tender. Do taste the risotto so it’s cooked to the texture you like it, add the chicken and asparagus sections (but not the tips) to the risotto and warm through. To serve, stir in a final knob of butter and a decent amount of grated Parmesan, season with salt and pepper. Serve in deep bowls with the asparagus tips on top. You Could be a Recycling Winner! – by Nick Cater Recycling Week is a great excuse for everyone in Bridgwater to consider how to make the best use of their waste. This year there is even more of an incentive, as careful recycling of a small old electrical item could net you a nice £100 prize! Recycling Week is 16th – 23rd June, reminding us that a heavyweight refuse bin is a waste of money and resources, and a potent source of greenhouse gases when its contents are dumped into costly landfill. There are so many ways to recycle, from the food waste and many materials collected weekly at the kerbside, to home composting. But recycling and reuse do not stop there, given the possibilities of recycling while shopping, such as batteries at supermarkets, inhalers at chemists, glasses at opticians, and donating good condition items to charity shops or the Sedgemoor Furniture Store reuse group in Bridgwater. For the widest range of recycling, check out the efficient systems of

Somerset’s 16 recycling centres, including the five locations now open 8am - 4pm seven days a week, such as Bridgwater Saltlands. During Recycling Week, Somerset Waste Partnership (SWP) and waste firm Viridor, which runs Somerset’s recycling centres, are encouraging some extra effort. A free prize draw for £100 is being offered as an incentive for any adult taking in a broken or worn small electrical item to a Somerset recycling centre as they deposit other waste. The definition of small electrical – to use the technical term, small WEEE or Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment – includes anything handheld with a plug or batteries for power. That can range from a kettle, toaster or iron to a radio or CD player, from hairdryers to curling tongs and even an electric toothbrush or power drill. Just fill in the form at the recycling centre – which also asks you to pledge to continue recycling and offers the option to sign up for SWP’s helpful Sorted e-zine – and £100 could be yours!

Somerset Rebels Speedway Speedway riders are the modern-day gladiators of the sporting world, 4 riders per race going head to head on 500cc motorbikes over 4 laps of the shale-based oval track, the bikes accelerating from 0-60mph in just 3 seconds, faster than an F1 racing car, but have no gears and NO BRAKES! The Somerset Rebels are one of a number of speedway clubs that operate in the UK from Plymouth in the south to Edinburgh in the north, their Oaktree Arena track being situated just off junction 22 on the M5, they race their home matches most Friday nights throughout the speedway season that operates from mid-March until the end of October. Formed in just 2000, the Somerset Rebels currently operate in the sport’s Premier League, which is the 2nd tier of racing in the UK, their Oaktree Arena track, which is 300 metres in length, is widely acknowledged to be one of the best speedway tracks in the UK, a fact borne out by the fact that Sky Sports are annual visitors to the track in order to broadcast one of the Rebels home matches, and will, once again, be bringing their cameras to the Oaktree Arena on Tuesday 11th June. A speedway meeting comprises 15 heats of pulsating action of what must be one of the most extreme spectator sports in the UK, but it is also one that appeals to fans of all ages, from 1-91! Somerset meetings get underway at 7.30pm, but from when the gates open at 5.30pm until 7pm fans can enter the pits where you can watch the riders prepare their bikes, take photos and also have a chat to the riders – what other sport can you get ‘up close and personal’ with the main people. Kids can also apply to be meeting mascots or hold birthday parties in the Oaktree Clubhouse adjacent to the track. On Saturday 19th July, Sally Monaghan, the daughter of our chairman and of the late Di Monaghan who was our manager at Sunny Side Up, is going to do a 15000ft skydive to raise funds for Sunny Side Up. Bridgwater Flower Club Flower arranging demonstration evenings are held on the second Tuesday of each month except August this year, at Westfield Church Hall (opposite the Fair Field), commencing at 7.30pm - doors open at 7pm. The club celebrates its Diamond Anniversary this year. Each month we have a qualified Area Demonstrator to show us his or her interpretation of the title for the evening. Everyone is welcome and the fee for visitors if £5 per meeting. Why not come along, sit back and enjoy a flower arranging demonstration. There is a raffle, and winners take home one of the designs created during the evening. We also have a sales table of flower arranging sundries and a plant stall each month.

Road Smart: New scheme to reduce road casualties In just one year in Avon and Somerset, 452 people were killed or seriously injured on our roads. Around one third of these were young people aged 17 to 24. To help reduce this figure we have launched a free education course for drivers, and learner drivers, in the force area. Road Smart is available for all drivers but we are especially keen to encourage young drivers to attend the session. The course has been specially created on behalf of Avon and Somerset Police. It aims to raise awareness of potential hazards on the roads and build on motorists’ existing driving knowledge and experience. • 95% of all collisions are caused by human error. • 1 in 5 new drivers will have a crash within their first six months of driving. • Road crashes are the biggest single killer of young people in the UK. Some insurance companies will offer a discount to young drivers who have completed the workshop. The course is a one-off interactive session and will be held at venues across the force area. It is based on the successful training package that is used for driver awareness courses nationally. Supt Ian Smith said: “This is a fantastic opportunity to benefit from a free course that could be a life-saving opportunity. The training will be delivered by the TTC group, a professional road safety education provider. The national course this is based upon is widely hailed as excellent and thought-provoking and really does influence driver behaviour.” Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Mountstevens said: “I am delighted Avon and Somerset Police have designed a unique road safety package to further educate all road users, but particularly young drivers." Courses will take place for the next 11 months. Two versions of the session have been created, one for young drivers (aged 17 to 24) and one for other drivers. The Bridgwater Foodbank This is a charity formed to help the people of our town that find themselves in a temporary crisis. To receive our help, you should go to one of the professional carers in the town that are on the list and ask for a food voucher that will entitle you to redeem the voucher at the Foodbank. The organisations who will assist are: the Sedgemoor Citizens’ Advice Bureau; The Salvation Army; the YMCA (through Routes in St. Mary Street); Health Visitors; Homes in Sedgemoor; Knightstone Housing Association; Somerset Care; and many more including some churches and the Children’s Centres. We will assist with food aid for people on low income that suffer from an unexpected crisis occurring, people that find themselves homeless, those who are having problems managing with the changes in the benefit system, elderly residents who are coping with higher energy bills, and others that are dealing with any domestic problem which is causing them to have problems in feeding themselves or their dependants. We believe that no child should go hungry and no parent should need to do wrong to feed that child. Restoring dignity, reviving hope.

All the Fun of the Fair in Cannington Bridgwater College’s Cannington Centre will be celebrating student success at its Summer Fair, in Cannington on Saturday 7 June. There will be demonstrations and activities for all ages, including a dog show, football tournament, outdoor activity zone, animal handling, product stalls and a Vintage & Handmade Fair. The Vintage & Handmade Fair will be taking place at the College’s Walled Gardens of Cannington, with a vintage bus ready to take you to and from the fun of the Summer Fair to the Gardens. The Vintage & Handmade Fair will have a 1940s theme, with forty vintage and handmade sellers, including PMP Studios and their 1940s theme pop-up photo studio. The Gardens’ Tea Room, Ice and Slice Belles (vintage caravan) and the Blue Can Cafe will have lovely food and drink for sale. There will be a Knit and Natter tent - a drop in tent for people to learn to knit (needles and wool provided). They will be selling white and red poppies, with the funds going to the War Hero Charity. Cybil's Vintage Hire will be doing displays, with one entitled, ‘What a home was like during the war and how families and soldiers coped when they came home’, and there will be a re-enactment of the Home Guard with, full uniform, period bike and tent. Children’s activities will include hook a duck, tin can alley, ring over the bottle, teddy bear tombola, lucky dip, and vintage games. Live music will be provided by Ruishton Small Big Band, and with free entry, it promises to be a wonderful day out! So visit the Gardens for FREE on this day to join in the fun and festivities! Senior Citizens’ Forum Our aim is to promote the welfare and interests of older people in the Bridgwater area. All meetings and activities are free and open to all over 50s. A small donation is requested for refreshments. Meetings are held on the first and third Thursday of each month, at the Baptist Church Hall, Little St. Mary Street, Bridgwater. The next meeting is on 5th June, and is an open meeting, starting at 10.30am. On the 19th June we have a trip on the River Dart by paddle steamer! Time 4 Sedgemoor I have just received further funding from the Sports Relief Community Charity Fund; with this money I would like to open up another Time Bank, to cover the Sydenham estate. If you are not familiar with Time Banks, this is what Time 4 Sedgemoor does: we are looking for volunteers to join, to offer their skills and talents for FREE to help others, and also to receive FREE help when they need it. All volunteers, instead of earning/spending money will earn and spend ‘Time Credits’ - one hour of time equals one Time Credit. A few examples of exchanges that have taken place include: helping to decorate a kitchen; tidying up a garden; help with filling in forms; basic IT skills; a lift to Musgrove Hospital. Each new volunteer will receive five hours’ worth of Time Credits to start their account. I am planning to have another six Time Banks up and running covering Sedgemoor by 2016. Evening of Jazz Young singing starlet Sinead McCabe joins the Cass Caswell Trio for a wonderful evening of diverse jazz from New Orleans/Traditional through mainstream to modern and bebop. Ever popular jazz standards performed by this highly entertaining trio will be complimented by Sinead’s short Otillie Patterson song-book, which will encompass Otillie’s finest numbers when she sang with the Chris Barber band back in the 1950s and 1960s. Mind in Sedgemoor We are a local Mental Health and Wellbeing Support Centre based at Sunny Side Up, near the Co-op on Rhode Lane Bridgwater. We have carried out a survey with two local doctor surgeries and found that 24% of their patients are receiving treatment for some form of mental health, which is more than twice the national average. From our centre we are able to offer counselling of one-to-one and group sessions FREE OF CHARGE. We currently are open Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, and we will also be opening on Saturdays in due course. Now we are looking to increase our Board of Trustees. If you can spare a couple of hours from 5pm on Wednesday evenings every six weeks, we would like to hear from you. Family Fishing On the 16th August, I am holding the very first ‘Family Fishing’ day at Apex Park near Burnham-onSea. The Angling Trust would like as many people of all ages to come and have a go for free at the fantastic sport of Angling (fishing). The day will start at 10am and finish at 5pm. There will be something there for all skill levels - from beginners to experienced anglers. There will also be a tackle sale so anyone that would like to come along and sell their old gear is more than welcome. There will be a very small fee of £3 for seller collected on the day, with all profits going back into angling programmes locally. Heaven's Gate Heaven's Gate Animal Rescue Centre near Langport has an enormous task of raising over £1million in funds for new kennels for their dogs, as the old kennels are sadly damp, unfriendly, and out of date for today's needs. There are many ways in which you can help, from buying a brick for £50 or by holding a small event such as a car boot sale or coffee morning (we can even provide bric-a-brac to sell). The Centre will be holding a barn sale with afternoon tea, every third weekend of each month the next one being the 14th and 15th June, 2 - 4pm. There will be stalls, raffle, etc, and no charge for admission. See our cats and dogs up for homing, buy a plant or two, a book or two, bring the family and have a picnic if you like! I’m often asked what exercises can be done to target the primary troublesome areas - the tummy, bum and arms. If I had my brutal personal trainer head on I would simply tell you it’s ‘too late for this summer’. For a total body transformation this may be true, but for some simple feel good, look good solutions, there are a few things that can still help you to look and feel better in time for your summer holiday. Firstly, EAT well! If you cut out the junk, eat things that come from the ground, trees or need chasing, you are probably going to feel some huge benefits. Lots of grains and processed foods and sugars simply bloat us out and affect our mood hormones, which in turn leads to fluctuation in our blood sugar that makes us crave junk - aka sugar. After this, EXERCISE! You don’t need to start running miles, or pumping iron for hours on end, any increase in your activity levels will undoubtedly help you. If you already exercise, a change in your routine, or more importantly in the intensity of your workout could be the modification your regime requires to see some physical changes. Finally, DRINK lots of WATER for clearer skin, and avoid burning the candle at both ends – sleep is essential to a great lifestyle and great results. The message: quality and quantity are the key to looking and feeling great. Love your body and treat it well, after all, it’s the only place you have to live!
