Want to feel good on a Monday morning? Contact the Elderly, the only charity solely dedicated to tackling loneliness and isolation among older people, is urgently appealing for volunteers living in the Bridgwater area to spare just a few hours each month to help with the running of local tea parties – and enjoy a cuppa and a cake themselves! The charity aims to relieve the acute loneliness of isolated older people, aged 75 and above, who live alone, by organising monthly Sunday afternoon tea parties for small groups within local communities – providing a regular and vital friendship link every month. Each older guest is collected from their home by a volunteer driver, and is taken to a volunteer host’s home, where they join a small group for tea, chat and companionship. The charity is hoping to set up a new group in Bridgwater, and needs to recruit just a few more volunteer drivers who are able to collect older guests from their homes and accompany them to the gathering each month, and volunteer hosts to welcome the group into their homes for tea once or twice a year. Volunteers are any age. Also, if you or someone you know would like to find out more about becoming a guest, please get in touch. Guests are generally 75+, living alone without much local family support, find it harder to get out and about and would like something to look forward to on a Sunday! Contact Helen Ker, Regional Development Officer on 01225 873812 or email Helen.ker@contact-the-elderly.org.uk

Bridgwater Choral Society From Chaos to the Creation of our World Haydn’s ‘Creation’ is deservedly one of the most popular and enduring works in the choral repertoire. Bridgwater Choral Society will be performing it on Saturday 10th May at St. Mary’s Church, Bridgwater, 7.30pm. The choir will be joined by talented soloists Charlotte Newstead (soprano), Daniel Joy (tenor) and Szymon Wach (bass) and a professional orchestra led by Brigid KirklandWilson, and Iain Cooper will conduct. It promises to be an exciting and inspiring evening – so do come along and experience the creation of our world. Haydn’s music is almost pictorial in its vivid description of how our Earth was made. Mountains and seas emerge, and living creatures from the worm to the lion and the tiger. Adam and Eve are created, and sing a tender love duet. Their future temptation is only briefly hinted at; ‘Creation’ ends with a glorious chorus of thanks and praise. Bridgwater Choral Society are confident that this will be an unforgettable concert. Tickets (£12 reserved, £8 unreserved, under-16s free) will be available from Strings ‘n’ Things, Clare Street, Bridgwater, online via www.ticketsource.co.uk, or on the door.

Tayen’s Journey Tayen's Journey are holding a fun day in Angel Place Shopping Centre, Bridgwater on World Neuro Awareness Day - 17th May. We will be raising funds for The Neuro Foundation, to continue their research and raise awareness of Neurofibromatosis. There will be a raffle, games, face painting and Krazy Kev the children’s entertainer, as well as Tayen's Journey wristbands on sale. The fun will start from 10am. Tayen was diagnosed with the Neurofibromatosis at 22 months old, after a fit at home. After an MRI it was discovered that she had a large inoperable tumour and gliomas on both optic nerves as a result of the condition. Tayen started chemo straight away to stabilise the tumor but sadly lost her sight shortly after starting her treatment. Tayen's Journey was the name of the Facebook page set up by her mum, Kali, to keep family and friends informed of her progress and treatment. The page has since drawn the following of over 3,500 people and has also given its name to our fundraising group which to date has raised over £10,000 for The Neuro Foundation, the charity which offers support and research into Tayen's genetic condition.

Somerset Rebels Speedway Speedway riders are the modern-day gladiators of the sporting world, 4 riders per race going head to head on 500cc motorbikes over 4 laps of the shale-based oval track, the bikes accelerating from 0-60mph in just 3 seconds, faster than an F1 racing car, but have no gears and NO BRAKES! The Somerset Rebels are one of a number of speedway clubs that operate in the UK from Plymouth in the south to Edinburgh in the north, their Oaktree Arena track being situated just off junction 22 on the M5, they race their home matches most Friday nights throughout the speedway season that operates from mid-March until the end of October. Formed in just 2000, the Somerset Rebels currently operate in the sport’s Premier League, which is the 2nd tier of racing in the UK, their Oaktree Arena track, which is 300 metres in length, is widely acknowledged to be one of the best speedway tracks in the UK, a fact borne out by the fact that Sky Sports are annual visitors to the track in order to broadcast one of the Rebels home matches, and will, once again, be bringing their cameras to the Oaktree Arena on Tuesday 11th June. A speedway meeting comprises 15 heats of pulsating action of what must be one of the most extreme spectator sports in the UK, but it is also one that appeals to fans of all ages, from 1-91! Somerset meetings get underway at 7.30pm, but from when the gates open at 5.30pm until 7pm fans can enter the pits where you can watch the riders prepare their bikes, take photos and also have a chat to the riders – what other sport can you get ‘up close and personal’ with the main people. Kids can also apply to be meeting mascots or hold birthday parties in the Oaktree Clubhouse adjacent to the track. Looking for a team bonding night out or something different to treat your staff then have a look at the Rebels website to see our offers and discounts or just simply email us. So why not give it a try, we know that you won’t be disappointed……… www.somersetrebels.co.uk

Big Celebrations in Cannington As part of its 50th anniversary celebrations, Somerset Wildlife Trust - the county’s leading environmental voluntary body – will be visiting Bridgwater College’s Walled Gardens of Cannington during the weekend of 24 and 25 May; there will be animals and wildlife for everyone to see. The Gardens are home to many species of wildlife, and recently welcomed five rescue hedgehogs from Secret World Wildlife Rescue Centre, who will now live within the Gardens. The Gardens have taken in the hedgehogs, in the hope they will form a colony and continue to thrive within their new, safe environment. With luck the hedgehogs will breed, and any youngsters will be relocated to new and suitable habitats to boost the wild populations which are currently under threat. The Walled Gardens are the perfect location for them, representing a large, enclosed environment where they are free to wander around during the night when there are no visitors, with plenty of dark, cool areas to sleep during the day. Secret World has also donated five hedgehog houses so each can have its own space, as they are naturally solitary animals. To find out more about Somerset’s wildlife, be sure to visit the Gardens on the weekend of 24 and 25 May, where experts will be on hand ready to answer all your questions. The Gardens will also be hosting part of the Cannington Summer Fair - a celebration day of Bridgwater College student success. With the Gardens open to visitors for free, they will have a vintage 1940s theme – including vintage bus rides, all taking place on Saturday 7 June. With more and more colour bursting into life every day in the Gardens, they really are a treasure not to be missed. Entry to the Gardens not needed for Tea Room, Plant Shop or Gift shop.

Life can be a balancing act at times, and sometimes we need a little help and focus to get us through. Solution Focused Hypnotherapy concentrates on where you want to be in life and can free you from past problems. This enables us to focus on the here and now, looking towards the solutions that will create positive change and let go of unwanted behaviours and habits. Hypnotherapy reduces stress and helps you think more positively and clearly. It allows you to harness your creativity and emotions in order to do what YOU want to do, promoting rational thought to help you achieve goals. Elise says “I am so enthusiastic about getting people to where they want to be in life and take great pleasure from witnessing the change hypnotherapy can bring to people’s lives in a relatively short space of time, it’s simply an amazing process. Hypnosis is a state of focused attention, where the conscious and subconscious minds work together to help you achieve whatever goals you may have in mind. Over a period of time new pathways of thinking are forged, so that this becomes your new default network. When we feel relaxed and calm we have intellectual control over our behaviors and are less driven by our more instinctive behavioral patterns which can sometimes start to control areas of our lives in an undesirable fashion. Elise runs practices in Burnham-on-Sea, Bridgwater, and Taunton. 07795 561905/ 01278 788394

DIY - the Low Waste Way Reduce, reuse, recycle: plan that project to save money, time and hassle - by Nick Cater With Easter just gone and this month’s two bank holidays, is it any wonder that everyone in Bridgwater is probably doing DIY? But what are the best ways to make extra savings when repairing and improving your home by wasting less, recycling more and using reuse? The key is to think through the project before you start, from tools and materials needed, to the waste that will be created. When considering equipment, friends, family or neighbours might lend items for nothing, and there are plenty of hire firms nearby. Estimate materials with care so you buy the right amount and can quickly top up any shortfall, or check that the shop will take back and refund any excess. Have a think about what might be left over, and whether there could be another use – or small project – for off-cuts, odd tiles or a few bricks. Remember that recycling centres charge for taking hardcore and rubble, including ceramics like old sinks, unless it is one carrier bag or less, so find out and factor in that cost. But much else can be deposited for free for recycling, from wood to metals and more. Take care to check if anything being updated – sheds or storage heaters or fire surrounds – is made of or contains asbestos, as that will need special bagging and handling. With all that hassle, there is an alternative. Why not just take the weekend off and get in a tradesperson, taking care they have a waste carrier licence to take your rubbish away? Remember – with May’s bank holidays, no collections on each Monday means pick-ups are one day later throughout the week, including Friday’s taking place on the Saturday. For more details, visit www.somersetwaste.gov.uk. Nick Cater is Senior Communications Officer at Somerset Waste Partnership, which manages waste and recycling services on behalf of all local authorities in Somerset.
Bingo! Eyes down 7pm on Thursday 1st May in the Church Rooms, North Petherton for bingo. The evening will include a snowball and raffle - all proceeds to Toppers Carnival club.
Supermarket Swap - Free is Bad?! Food shopping and preparation is a mind boggling maze for those of us who understand and have studied nutrition; for the average shopper bamboozled with BOGOFs, empty promises and the ‘chocolate is cheaper than fruit’ argument fixed in their mind, it is no wonder that the majority of the nation’s shopping basket is horribly lacking in good quality nutrition. Nutrition is instrumental to health and is a primary villain in high-risk health conditions, such as diabetes and heart disease. Aside from this, if you want to achieve your physique or fitness goals, fine-tuned nutrition is fundamental to success! If the label says it’s fat free, sugar free or FREE of any kind, and it tastes great, ask yourself WHY? Colours, flavours, artificial sweeteners are all VERY nasty chemicals to avoid. There is scientific evidence that these artificial ingredients actually stimulate the brain to crave more sweet things. Eating healthily does not mean living off lettuce leaves and ‘magic shakes’. The government guidelines and visual ‘eat well plate’ are a great starting place, along with portion size control and trying to follow a diet that avoids processed and convenience foods that tend to taste great but provide limited nutrition. In a nutshell – less is more; clean eating will give you greater results. If you are unsure, ask me, or any other health, exercise or lifestyle specialist in the area. Let me know what health and fitness topic you’d like to read about in the next issue of LocalReach Bridgwater.
