Food & Drink Festival Releases 2014 Dates! Burnham-on-Sea’s favorite food and drink extravaganza is back again in 2014. The all day FREE festivals that celebrate local food, are being held on Saturday 24th May and Saturday 25th October. Both are timed to coincide with school holidays. Victoria Street, College Street, the Princess Theatre, Somerset Skills & Learning, Methodist Church and Baptist Hall, will be full of local food and drink producers all wanting to share their stories, tips and samples with you. Popular competitions including The Great Burnham Bake Off for home and professional bakers will be back at Somerset Skills & Learning. The Bake Off will have categories for home bakers, families and professional bakers. You just need to bring your bake with a completed application form to the venue before the deadline. The Brew Off will be looking for the best home brew cider, so if you are pulping, juicing and bottling your apples as cider at the moment, keep a bottle back for the free-to-enter competition. It will be held at The Princess Theatre. In May the UK Chilli Cook Off Championships will be holding the South West England round of their search for the nation’s best chilli. Teams can sign up online now to begin their journey towards the $25,000 first prize at the international finals. Search for UK Chilli Cook Off online. Looking ahead to October, The Clifton Chilli Club will be repeating the highly entertaining challenge of the chilli eating competition. Search for Burnham-on-Sea and Clifton Chilli Club on YouTube to see what the contestants endured. The festival is free entry and will have more activities for children. The free taster sessions at Somerset Skills & Learning will be running all day too. To find out more about the festival, check out their website: www.burnhamonseafoodfestival.org, or give them a call on 01278 781620.

Burnham’s Christmas Farmers’ Market! Burnham Farmers’ Market is being held on Friday 20th December from 9am-1pm in the High Street. Right through the month of December our markets notch up a gear or two, with local producers pulling out all the stops to ensure that you can purchase as wide a range as possible of festive food, with the added bonus of luxurious treats, and gift buying opportunities from artisan producers. From poultry and mince pies, to Traditional Truckles of Cheese and award winning produce, our local farmers’ markets are an important part of the traditional build-up to Christmas in Somerset. With Christmas prize draws, decorated stalls and a great shopping atmosphere, if you haven’t shopped at Burnham’s farmers’ market before, come and find out what is on offer. Buy your Christmas pudding from Jan (who makes them), your chipolatas from Donna (the farmer who raised the pigs), or sprouts from Sue (who grew them)! There are many opportunities to buy presents, from sets of preserves, hand woven willow plant supports, or hand-made ceramics from the Country Potter - come along and enjoy the experience! It is advisable though not essential, to pre-order some items such as your Christmas birds, puddings, hams, and whole cheeses, either at the markets, or contact the producers direct. The farmers’ market producer details are on the SFM website on the producers’ directory www. somersetfarmersmarkets.co.uk. If you’ve no computer, then phone 01373 814646 for contact details. PS - Yet again our top present buying tip is a useful economical, sustainable, sought after and stylish, limited edition jute farmers’ market bag for just £3 - still not available on Amazon!

Anyone for Golf? The winter might now be upon us, with the dark evenings and the cold weather, but that’s no reason not to get to the golf course! You will have to add more layers to your golfing attire to keep warm, and may have to adjust your technique slightly to allow movement with the extra layers, but you can still take pleasure in meeting up with friends and enjoy a good game. With less people on the course during the winter, it’s a great time to try out new strategies, without having to worry about holding other players up. In fact many players use the winter months as their practise season, ready to play again in the summer. Bridgwater College's Cannington Golf Centre is a great place to perfect your game ready for 2014. Open daily (except Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day), it’s an 18-tee golf course, designed by renowned course architect Martin Hawtree, who recently designed the brand new Donald Trump Golf Resort in Scotland. As well as the course there's also a fully-automated, floodlit driving range, pro shop and clubhouse. The Driving Range now includes the world-famous Power Tee automated tee system (installed on a trial basis, right bays only), and a basket of 60 balls costs just £2.50! The Pro Shop stocks many of the latest pieces of golfing equipment, and is definitely worth a visit for Christmas present purchases. The Golf Course is located just four miles from the historic town of Bridgwater, and offers splendid views of the nearby Quantock Hills. It is ideal for new players and improvers and was built to the highest international specification (6,072 yards, par 68). The open fairways offer new players the chance to concentrate on their shots, whilst the subtle contours of the course provide a satisfying round of golf for those improving their technique. The Centre has its own Golf Pro - Ron Macrow - who provides quality instruction through one-toone and group lessons, and there is even a free club re-gripping service. There is also a Members’ Club, with various membership options, and the Winter Membership offer of just £99 (no joining fee) is now available. For more information and the latest news and special offers, it’s worth looking at the website or social media pages: www.canningtongolfcentre.co.uk.

News about Windows 8.1 and Advanced E-mail Systems Some of you may have seen my article in the November issue to advise that Windows 8.1 has been released. Having dealt with quite a few upgrades from Windows 8 to 8.1, I thought readers would like to know about some of the differences. One major change was that there was previously a backup system called “Windows 7 File Recovery” – this backed up both data and also provided a full system image of the computer, which could be very helpful in the event of a hard disk failure. I would appear that with Windows 8.1 this feature was removed as Microsoft are keen for people to keep more data “in the cloud” using their Skydrive system. With Skydrive you get 7 gigabytes of remote storage for free with the option to pay for more storage. The price of storage is actually quite cheap, but my main concern is that if you used “Windows 7 File Recovery” and upgrade to 8.1, this facility affectively stops from the point of upgrade. I would suggest going into the control panel of Windows 8.1 and switching on “File History” – this will backup important files to a device such as a USB hard drive. You may also want to keep a system image, in which case within the “File History” section, there is a System Image link which will allow you to manually backup the whole hard drive. This task can be automated, so if you would like some help doing this, please get in touch and I can arrange to visit. My phone number is 07973 536299 or e-mail is sales@e-cps.co.uk Some of you may have heard of Microsoft Exchange – this is an advanced e-mail system that holds e-mails, contacts, calendars and tasks on a server. If you have multiple devices such as computers, phone, laptops and iPads and wish you synchronise your data, Exchange is a very good way of doing this. As this requires a server, we have setup such a system and can offer a yearly subscription package for those that wish to have the most advanced and reliable e-mail system. We can even use your existing e-mail address and import messages, contacts. Somerset Road Safety Tips for Bad Weather Driving Nobody wants to break down or get stuck in the snow, but if you are unfortunate enough to have it happen to you, it is sensible to be prepared. Remember to charge your mobile phone and take it on every journey. Consider carrying an emergency pack in the car which contains a reflective jacket, torch, blanket and warm clothes, boots, food bars and drink, first aid kit, battery jump leads, a tow rope and a spade. You can minimise the risk of breaking down by making sure your car is well maintained and serviced. Make sure your tyre pressures are checked regularly and they have at least the minimum level of tread depth of 1.6mm, although 3mm is advisable, especially in winter. Whilst checking your windscreen fluid, don’t forget your radiator will need the correct level of anti-freeze. The battery needs to be in good condition, as vehicles use a lot more power in winter. Keep lights clean and check bulbs regularly, as this will ensure good visibility, as treacherous driving conditions are exacerbated by the longer nights and poor daytime light levels. Remember also that stopping distances double in wet conditions, so decrease your speed and leave plenty of room between you and the car in front. In icy conditions stopping distances increase to ten times those in dry conditions. Also, be aware of micro climates that can easily develop under bridges and on roads shaded by trees, where it will take longer for water, frost and ice to disperse. Finally, try and leave extra time for your journey so that, if you do find yourself stuck in traffic or slowed down by conditions, you don’t try and make up for lost time and increase your risk of a crash. For more detailed information of how to prepare your car for, and how to drive in winter conditions, please visit http://somersetroadsafety.org/page/drivers/108/

Council Response to Vandalism Clear-up at Marine Cove Following vandalism at Marine Cove, Burnham-on-Sea (committed during the early hours of the 28 October), Sedgemoor District Council has been working hard to try and ensure the gardens are soon back in top condition for residents and visitors to enjoy. Sedgemoor District Council was appalled to learn that mindless vandalism which took place and acted quickly to discuss the acts with Police, cordon off the area and remove loose/damaged items. Staff have also been working hard to assess the cost of damaged items and obtain quotes for repair. We will also be working with our insurers to recover costs of insured items where possible. With regards to this incident, and as previously advised, two people were arrested in October and have been bailed until mid-November pending further investigation by Avon and Somerset Police. It is with further sadness that we advise another act of vandalism has taken place. One of the shelters and adjacent benches has suffered minor fire damage. CCTV footage has been reviewed and this incident has been reported to the Police. The cost of the damage is now being estimated. This incident took place around 1.30am in the early hours of the 6 November. Sedgemoor District Council would again appeal to any witnesses to contact the Police by calling the 101 number. You can email the local beat team via the Constabulary’s website: www.avonandsomerset.police.uk. Alternatively you can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. They never take your name or trace your call. Please quote Crime ref 111/073/13 when contacting the Police or Crimestoppers about the incident of the 6 November. Portfolio Holder for Community and Scrutiny, Councillor John Swayne, said: “We would like to take this opportunity to thank the Friends of Marine Cove and the entire local community for being positive about the gardens’ future and in condemning these thoughtless acts. The Council will continue to work with the Police to assist in their on-going investigations.”

Snow White and The Magnificent Seven Based on the original Brothers Grimm story of Snow White & The Seven Dwarfs, Curtain Call School of Performing Arts are bringing this funny, unique and quirky pantomime to life with a bit of a twist! Our story starts traditionally with the fair Snow White, innocent and beautiful. Then there is the Stepmother, evil to the core and so vain, she desires to become the ‘fairest in the land’! Given a magic mirror for her birthday, it promptly sets the Stepmother straight…”Chill baby, it’s in the family Queeny. The fairest in the land is Snow White your own Stepdaughter…cool eh!” The Stepmother hatches a plan – which goes quite wrong….. Ordered to take Snow White into the Spooky forest and execute her, the Axe Man, who prefers gardening, spares her life and leaves her all alone……! So, who are the Magnificent Seven…? Well, let me give you some clues. They’re rough, they’re tough and they LOVE beans! Snow White’s saviours are not dwarfs, but seven trusty cowboys, led by the enigmatic Yule Grinner! With the usual ‘boos, hisses and oh no it isn’t,’ is there a happy ending….? Well, you’ll have to come along and watch! This is the first time Curtain Call have produced a school pantomime, and it’s proving to be such a fun experience! Directing the show is Principal Patricia Ham assisted by her creative team, Amanda Ham, Sophie Woods, Dawn Rose and long-standing senior student, Loren Wintle. She is acting as Dance Captain and bringing her creative talents to the costumes, props and scenery. Snow White & the Magnificent Seven is an entertaining show suitable for all ages, and offers an enjoyable theatrical experience for a family trip to celebrate the festive season. As well as the pantomime, the show has an encore of festive songs and carols that you can enjoy listening to, or join in with! The show will be performed on Saturday 14th December with a 3pm matinee and a 7pm evening show. Ticket prices start from £8.50 and can be purchased from Curtain Call’s studio by calling 01278 238087 or at the door on the day, 30 minutes prior to each performance. Snow White and the Magnificent Seven is kindly sponsored by Positive Wealth Creation Ltd.

Drawing Inspiration from the Class Somerset resident Diane Bingham always fancied learning how to draw and, after five short weeks attending a Drawing for Beginners class at Somerset Skills & Learning, she has amazed her class mates, her tutor and herself with the quality of drawing she has produced. “If anybody had told me five weeks ago that I would have been drawing the things I have done, I would not have believed them!” Diane told us. Seeing her drawing of the view from her window, we are inclined to agree. Diane’s drawing brings together all the taught elements of the course to date. Techniques for drawing the correct shapes, guidance for adding tone, ideas to create more realism with texture, were the starting points. This drawing also includes techniques on creating depth in a drawing with perspective. “The tutor told us that we would start seeing the world in a different way, and he was right. I am noticing things that I had never noticed before,” Diane added. “The tonal work, the texture and the attention to detail in her drawing is superb. Diane has really taken on the concepts in the taught syllabus and she has developed such a long way in a very short time, I am very proud of her achievements,” Ade Bowen, her tutor told us. If you want to discover what hidden artistic talents you have, there are new courses starting in Drawing and Watercolour Painting in Burnham-on-Sea, Wells and Weston-super-Mare. Also, it’s not too late to join the Level 1 Art, Design and Creative Studies – a full year course in Burnham, with fees starting from just £19 for the year! Visit www.learnsomerset.co.uk and go on coursefinder for more details, or call 0845 688 0477 and join the big draw.

DECEMBER Work in the Garden The Flower Garden

Vegetables

• Keep an eye on all plants in your garden for wind rock, and press back any plants into the soil. If you do not, you will more than likely lose the plant or shrub. Examine any stored bulbs or tubers - remove any that appear to be diseased and destroy them.

• Frost should not harm cabbage or broad bean seedlings unless the plants are lifted out of the ground. After a frost, press the earth back around the stems. To obtain early potatoes put a few tubers in shallow boxes and keep in a frost free place. Plant out in a sheltered place as soon as the weather permits. Examine potatoes, carrots, beetroot and onions in store, and destroy any that show signs of decay. If you have a greenhouse, try bringing some strawberries plants in for some early fruits.

For more tips, why not join your local gardening group? The Burnham and District Horticultural Society meets at 7:30pm on the third Monday of each month (except December), at the Community Centre, Berrow Road. All welcome. Members of the Society free, visitors £1. N.B. No meeting in December. Next meeting 20th January 2014. Save with a Great, Green Christmas Family Fun: Getting Festive Need not be Wasteful or Expensive - by Nick Cater What can people in Burnham-on-Sea do to make their Christmas a bit greener and save money by wasting less and getting creative? “Plenty” is the easy answer, as the Green Routine waste prevention campaign from Somerset Waste Partnership is offering simple hints and tips about everything festive, from food to decorations and gifts. A lot of food can be wasted at Christmas, adding to all the meals and ingredients thrown out over a year, which averages £700 worth for a family. But Green Routine makes it easy to make a difference, with hints on portions, leftover recipes for turkey and more – Christmas pudding ice cream, anyone? It also offers useful storage advice. It highlights how the freezer is your best Christmas friend, if you can clear space by eating from it ahead of time, so festive meat, veg and more – including wine dregs – can be saved. For gifts, there are reminders about how wish lists can eliminate unwanted presents, investing ahead of time in rechargeable batteries, and for family fun before the big day, great ideas for creating thrifty gifts from recycled materials. In the same way, a great decorations tip is to make them yourself, from paper items to hang on the tree, to gift tags from old Christmas cards or garden greenery that can be composted later. Thinking where your Christmas will end up, is a helpful reminder that card decorations can usually be recycled, but those made of tinsel and plastic cannot, while after eating those puddings with spray cream or munching chocolates, you can recycle large tins and aerosols in your recycling box. All this year, Green Routine has been offering super-saver suggestions for everything from gardening and gadgets to packaging and clutter, backing people in Burnham and elsewhere as they waste less, recycle more and go a bit greener. For how to have a happy Christmas by keeping it green, and all the other low waste tips, find Green Routine at www.somersetwaste.gov.uk. Nick Cater is Senior Communications Officer at Somerset Waste Partnership, which manages waste and recycling services on behalf of all local authorities in Somerset.

Homelessness Prevention - Sedgemoor in Top National Statistics Latest figures from the Department of Communities and Local Government, confirm that Sedgemoor is amongst the top set of councils for their work on homelessness prevention. Last year, Sedgemoor’s Housing Advice Team prevented 483 people from becoming homeless. It was also confirmed that Sedgemoor has one of the lowest homeless figures per 1000 population in the south west, and the lowest numbers in temporary accommodation in Somerset. Jerry Milton, Housing Advice Manager said:“Youth homelessness in Sedgemoor halved last year compared to the year before. We have done this because we are flexible, creative in tackling homelessness and develop effective partnerships. Most importantly, we’ve got a dedicated and committed team who have developed specialist skills over several years.”Homelessness prevention means that through help from Sedgemoor, along with other agencies such as the YMCA, a range of initiatives has been introduced over the past two years including provision of emergency accommodation in the homes of local families (Nightstop), a homelessness awareness programme in schools, and a tenant accreditation scheme, teaching young people how to manage a tenancy.

Once Upon a Time in Burnham – Grocers and Drapers It might seem a strange association, but there were even stranger ones in Victorian and Edwardian times, although many branched out in the sort of direction that we would expect, such as the Avent Family. In 1848, Richard Avent was the first grocer listed in Burnham. He continued until 1875 when he was succeeded by Benjamin, who is shown as operating an off licence in 1883 in their premises that later became the Victoria Hotel. Samuel Clouter traded in Huntspill as a grocer and draper during the times that Richard Avent was operating in Burnham. Another variation on the theme in 1872 gives George Rich as a grocer and outfitter rather than a draper, in Church Street, Highbridge. There were many grocers who expanded in less unusual directions, such as bakers. Edwin Hunt of Berrow was typical of these, and like so many only has one or perhaps two entries in the directories of the time, appearing only in 72; like Mrs Ellen Thomas who was at 1 and 2 Alfred Street in the same year but who, unlike Edwin, went onto bigger things – the Burnham Cocoa and Coffee Tavern and Reading Rooms, from 1889 to 1902. The Burnett family were heavily into diversification, either alone or with a partner, from 1848 onward. What we would describe today as their family portfolio, included grocers, drapers, implement makers, boarding schools, estate agents’ assistant overseer. Robert Emery successfully combined his grocery business with that of a Cooper on Mark Causeway, from 1866 to 1902, doubtless with his wife or daughter running the shop while he laboured in the workshop. Today where do we go for our groceries, with or without an attached drapery in many cases. Thanks to Bob Thomas for supplying the snap shot on our past shopping experiences – for more information consider buying his book created from years of research between himself and is father.
