From the editor
Well here we are once again in November; the clocks have gone back, carnival is upon us and Christmas is just around the corner! There are still plenty of events organised during this month, and advanced notice of events organised for December. If you want an evening of entertainment, why not book a ticket to see Stage 2 in their forthcoming show “What’s for Pudding”? There are various venues if you want to try your luck at bingo, and plenty of craft fairs planned, some raising money for very good causes – look out for details in this month’s edition. We have regular features from our local Horticultural Society, providing tips and expertise on what we should be doing in the garden, and also recycling information from Somerset Waste Partnership. I look forward to receiving your information, and would like to hear from more groups and societies. Deadline for the November issue is Thursday 14th November. Notice board
Once Upon a Time in Burnham…Lighthouses The story begins, with the fisherman’s wife who supposedly put a light in her cottage window when her husband was out fishing one dark and stormy night, and the other fisher folk paid her a small sum to maintain the light on a regular basis. The local sexton then bought the right from her to show a light and charge a fee. He went one better and hung a lantern on the church tower which, because of its height gave his light a greater range. He is supposed to have then sold the right to the Reverend David Davies, the stipendiary curate of Dr Walker King, Bishop of Rochester, who was also the Vicar of Burnham. So goes the story, which may or may not be true; what is undoubtedly true is that the Rev Davies applied to the Board of Trade for a permit to operate a light and charge all vessels that passed it, and was responsible for the first custom built lighthouse. He constructed the lighthouse on the dunes to the west of the church, and operated it for several years before representations were made to the government for the withdrawal of his permit, which resulted in Trinity House being instructed to buy back the remainder of his lease and replace his light with one of their own. The reason why is unclear. Davies Lighthouse was decommissioned and the top removed, leaving the stump which is known today as the Round Tower. Joseph Nelson who had worked on the Eddystone lighthouse was appointed Engineer in Charge and recommended two lights were to be used and lined up on the entrance to the mouth of the River Parrett where it joined the Bristol Channel. Unlike many lighthouses, the lights are fixed to point in one direction, so no complicated machinery is required. The low lighthouse was the first to be decommissioned, then GPS the main tower followed suit. For more information about Burnham’s history, look for ‘The Book of Burnham-on-Sea’ by Winston and Robert Thomas. Thanks to Bob for supplying this article.

Trustees’ Week 2013 Trustees’ Week takes place between 4th - 10th November. It is an annual event to highlight the fantastic work trustees do and raise awareness of the vital role trustees play in supporting their local community and a cause that is close to their heart. The Charity Commission say that “A Trustee is a member of a group of people – the board of trustees, management committee or governing body – who have ultimate responsibility in a charitable organisation”. Through our partnership with Mendip Community Support our Development Workers can offer help with developing the trustee role in your organisation and advise on recruiting and training trustees. Many organisations across Mendip and Sedgemoor are looking for trustees/ committee members. If you are interested in supporting local organisations by volunteering in this way, please contact the Volunteer Centre Mendip and Sedgemoor on 01278 457685 to find out more. Or you can visit Do-It.org.uk for more information on local volunteering opportunities.

Windows 8.1 now available I received a phone call from the Localreach editor James to say that my editorial was needed urgently. It was for a change not due to my lateness writing, but I was actually holding off for the release of Windows 8.1 which came out today (17th October). Many of you will now have a Windows 8 computer, but many said that the removal of the “Start” button was a step too far. Fortunately, this new 8.1 update bring back a version of the start button, please for those who do not like the new tiled start menu, this can be bypassed so that the computer now goes directly onto the desktop (as it used to). To get the Windows 8.1 update, you need to visit the “Store” app which can be found on the initial menu (with the square and rectangular tiles). You may need to register for the store but once in, you should see the Windows 8.1 window, on which you can click and then prompt installation. One small word of warning, the update is very large, so if you have a slow internet connection, this can be quite some time (the size is around 3.4gb in size which is roughly the same size as a high definition movie!!) For more information on Windows 8.1 see here www.windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/windows-8/meet For those of you with the Microsoft Surface RT, the Window 8.1 upgrade will also include Microsoft Outlook 2013. For those of you on Windows 7, I would highly recommend Windows 8.1 – yes, there are differences, but I find it a much faster, more secure and more reliable operating system. Upgrade packs are available which keep all your data and programs intact. There has also been another concerted effort by scammers to try and get control of people’s computers in the Burnham area, so please be particularly vigilant if the phone rings and somebody pretends to be from Microsoft or similar telling you that you have a virus. One little known fact is that the speed of a computer is largely governed by the speed of the hard drive. A good upgrade is to replace a hard drive with a more modern version – data can be duplicated from one drive to another saving the need to re-install everything. If you are having speed problems, please see our advert below and get in touch – we can help speed up almost any computer. Neil Buzzard, Director, Computer Problem Solutions Ltd. Tel: 07973 536299

Job-hunters Helped on Road to Employment A recruitment fair, held in Bridgwater, has been hailed a massive success by both the job-hunters, and employers, attending. The fair, held in Blake Hall, Bridgwater, attracted over two hundred jobhunters. Employers included Tesco, Sedgemoor District Council, 1610, Avon Cosmetics, Notaro Care Homes, Somerset Care Group, Mulberry, The Walnut Tree and Toolstation. Numerous current vacancies were being advertised, with application forms handed out for completion. The National Careers Service, Somerset Skills and Learning, Job Centre Plus, Bridgwater College and Somerset Business Agency were also on hand to provide advice and guidance on self-employment, training, a careers clinic and regional job opportunities. Somerset County Council’s fostering team were also in attendance to advise those interested in fostering. Sedgemoor District Council Chairman Councillor Peter Downing dropped into the event and said: “Job-hunting can be a pretty stressful time. Events such as these are welcoming and relaxed; they help to build confidence as well as putting jobhunters in touch with a variety of employers in one place”. Victoria Wolfenden representing Avon Cosmetics
said: “I attend a lot of similar events and this has been the best recruitment fair held in the area. There has been great attendance and a real sense of helping job-hunters”. After visiting the fair, Siobhan from Durleigh said: “This is a really good one-stop-shop with a variety of companies. There is a positive energy and a comfortable atmosphere which is really important when people may be nervous and worried about job-hunting”. Similar sentiments were echoed by Melanie from Bridgwater: “I came along today as I need to update my CV to help me look for employment. I now have an appointment to meet with the National Careers Service to do this. I found the event really useful”. Richard Stokes, Clean Surroundings Operations Manager from Sedgemoor District Council said: “The event was a great success. Twenty six jobhunters have expressed an interest in becoming an apprentice at the council. The event was really valuable for those people but also to the council; we want to help people reach their career goals”. Sedgemoor District Council organised the recruitment fair with funding support from EDF Energy.

Do it for BIBIC - Help Change Children’s Lives Somerset-based children’s charity BIBIC is asking runners who have a place in next March’s Bath Half Marathon to ‘Do It For BIBIC’ - the children’s charity that helps families with children with neurological differences. The Bath Half Marathon is one of the longest-established and most popular city road events in the UK. The course is fast and flat and suitable for runners of all abilities – for beginners whose key objective is to complete the course, to the more regular long-distance runners looking to beat their personal best time. The two lap, 13.1 mile, traffic-free course, straddles both sides of the River Avon. The race starts and finishes in Great Pulteney Street, in the heart of the World Heritage City of Bath. Children and their families benefit from coming to BIBIC’s National Assessment Centre in Bridgwater through an individualised programme of therapies and strategies which are taught to the family who attend a two-day development assessment. The BIBIC approach gives the parents/ carers a better understanding of their child, coupled with practical ideas to incorporate into their daily life. Entry is now open to register for a place in the Bath Half Marathon 2014 - go to www. bathhalf.co.uk. The cost of entry to each applicant is £42. Any sponsored runner for BIBIC will receive a BIBIC T-shirt and a sponsorship form. Or to make life easier they can set up a Just Giving page at www.justgiving.co.uk and nominate BIBIC as their charity and encourage friends, family and colleagues to donate online. To let the Bridgwater-based BIBIC fundraising team know that they have a place in the Bath Half Marathon, runners should ring 01278 684060 or email fundraising@bibic.co.uk.

On Thursday 7th November our speaker is Ann-Marie Wilkinson whose talk is entitled ‘The Other Phillips Photography Collection’ and covers a recently discovered collection of local photographs. Although this will focus on Somerset and Dorset subjects, they will be of general interest to anyone with ancestors in other areas. The hall will be open from 7:15pm and the talk will start at 7:40pm. There is an opportunity over light refreshments to raise any research queries. This will be followed by a short business meeting for Society members.
Highbridge Festival of the Arts - Syllabus Launch The Syllabuses for the 67th Highbridge Festival of the Arts are now available. Whether you are interested in dance, speech and drama or music, there is something for everyone in this year’s festival. Here is an insight to what each section has in store. The dance syllabus has something for everyone, from Classical Ballet to Street and Hip Hop, classes for 4 year olds to senior citizens, and everyone in between; come strut your stuff and have fun. This year’s drama syllabus attempts to open the classes to a much wider age range than before. The festival is not just for children - it should be seen as an opportunity for anyone who wants to perform for others, and the classes have been designed to reflect this. This year commemorates the centenary of the start of the First World War. I hope that this might inspire more mature competitors to make an entry. We look forward to welcoming everyone, young and not so young, experienced or inexperienced. The music syllabus this year has a wide range of classes whether you like singing or playing a musical instrument - something for everyone. This year we have even included some non-competitive classes and a musical theatre class. The syllabuses are available from The Princess Theatre and Arts Centre, Burnham Library, Highbridge Library and Burnham Doctors’ Surgery. If you wish to find out more about the festival, contact for Dance - Marilyn Banks on 01275 844404, Speech and Drama - Sue Walton on 01278 769208, and Music - Mary Lawrence on 01278 784184. We are also looking for a new General Secretary for the festival. This is an interesting position for anyone who enjoys administration and organisation. A job description is available from Maureen Phillips on 01278 780615. The festival is held each March over nine days. It is affiliated to the British and International Federation of Festivals. We have approximately 1800 performers taking part each year.
Next Step in the River Brue Footpath The River Brue footpath project passed another milestone on 30th September with the opening of the section between Highbridge Quays and Station Walk. The footpath provides public access along the north bank of the River Brue and makes the most of one of Highbridge’s greatest assets. Pedestrians and cyclists will now be able to travel between the town centre and the station while enjoying views over this scenic section of the River Brue. Funds for the project were provided by developers of adjacent properties, with a small contribution from Sedgemoor District Council.

New Lease of Life Almost 300 people have enrolled onto courses at Somerset Skills & Learning and are enjoying getting out, meeting people with similar interests and developing their skills in their chosen hobby, or improving their employability prospects. Adult education is very different from school. For a start, everyone in a class wants to be there, and it is a great way of making new friends while learning new things. Hazel has signed up to do a drawing class at the centre in Princess Street. “I can’t wait to start”, she told us. “I have always wanted to try my hand at art, and this short drawing for beginners course is just the thing I was looking for to get me started.” It’s not just art classes available, and you have not missed out yet. Skills & Learning is recognised as a centre of excellence in this area, and there are courses for beginners and advanced learners starting in November, which you can enrol upon. The most popular
are the sugarcraft courses. Other creative courses include drawing in a range of media, watercolour and floristry. The art classes in September were so popular that an extra class had to be put on to accommodate everyone. There are also computer classes to help you with every aspect of using your computer and tablet. ‘Carry on Computing’ is a beginner’s class that will help you get the most from your computer, or you can look at improving the look of your CV with classes in using MS Word, creating amazing Powerpoint presentations or using spreadsheets. If you have a digital camera, you could enrol on a short course to help you get the most out of your photography, which will be much more than point, click and print. Somerset is beautiful in the autumn and there are some wonderful, colourful photo opportunities all around. For more details on any of the learning opportunities with Somerset Skills & Learning, call into the centre in Princess Street, or go online: www.learnsomerset.co.uk.
St. John’s Church St. John’s Church in Highbridge is always an engaging and active place to be; here are a few things planned for November: 10th November starts off with collecting our shoe boxes to send to disadvantaged children in Eastern Europe as part of Operation Christmas Child. If you are able to prepare a box and bring it along and take
part in the service, you would be welcome. As it is Remembrance Sunday, it is the day when we remember all those who have fallen in conflict and wars. A Service and Parade will be held at 3pm to mark this special day. The following day at 10:50am we will gather at the Memorial to keep the two minutes’ silence at 11o’clock to mark the Armistice of 1914. All are welcome.
Highbridge Community Hall On Saturday 2nd November, Prize Bingo is being held to raise money for the hall. Eyes down at 7:30pm, with refreshments and raffle during the evening. Advanced notice that the Christmas Prize Bingo will be held on Saturday 7th December. AGM announcement - Highbridge Community Hall is managed by a Charitable Trust of people who raised the money to build a new hall when
Sedgemoor District Council demolished the old well-loved hall. The committee is made up of many like-minded people who want to see the hall continue to prosper. We would like to invite anyone who is interested in becoming a member of our management committee to come along to our Annual General meeting on Wednesday 26th November at 7:30pm in the hall.

Poppy Appeal Just a few months ago we were concerned that the sale of Poppies would not be evident in the Burnham, Highbridge, Berrow and Brean area. However, through much publicity and the response of so many kind-hearted local people, we are now anticipating to make the 2013 Poppy Appeal a tremendous success. The “Team” would like to take this opportunity of thanking, so very much, all who have kindly given their time to help, and hope our local generosity will be reflected in the final total. - Sue, Gaynor, Abby, Penelope.

All are welcome on Tuesday 26th November at Berrow Village Hall, 7:30pm. Visitors £2.50, Members £1 - refreshments included.

November Work in the Garden The Flower Garden
Vegetables
• Planting can be made in mild weather, of wallflowers, polyanthus and tulips. Lift dahlias and gladioli and store in a dry frost proof shed.
• As much digging as possible should be done during dry weather; leave the surface rough for the rain and frost to break down.
• Now is a good time to plan next year’s flower garden. Dig to a depth of 10” to ensure good drainage.
• Where the soil is light and warm, sow a few broad beans of an early variety.
• It is still not too late to plant new roses and deciduous shrubs if the weather is dry. Make holes wider and deeper than needed and spread the roots out when planting. Cover the roots with fine soil, making sure that there are no air pockets, and firm the soil so that the shrubs will not rock in the wind. Stake, if necessary, and do not forget to put a label on the shrub with its name on.
• Early peas can be sown but only if you have a warm place in your garden. If not, then wait till spring. • Now is a good time to plan what vegetables you want to grow next year. Only buy the best seeds.
For more tips, why not join your local gardening group? The Burnham and District Horticultural Society meets at 7:30pm on the third Monday of each month (except December), at the Community Centre, Berrow Road. On Monday 18th November, Gill Hazell will be talking about Classic, Rare and Unusual Bulbs. All welcome. Members of the Society free, visitors £1. The Society’s Annual Dinner takes place on the evening of Friday 13th December at the Orchard Inn, Main Road, West Huntspill. Please contact Anne Bone on 01278 786600 for details.

Get the most from Gadgets No landfill: repair, donate, sell or recycle electricals - by Nick Cater Is your home a gadget graveyard with unused gizmos - from smoothie makers to foot spas - gathering dust or all too often, heading for the refuse bin and wasteful landfill? Somerset Waste Partnership’s Green Routine waste prevention campaign is here to help everyone in Burnham-on-Sea with easy tips: • When buying electricals, consider energy efficiency, availability of spares, ease of repair, and whether it is built to last. • Before splashing out on a new gadget, check reviews or see if you can try before you buy; there are lots of options online, including hire, borrow or loan websites, or ask friends and neighbours. • Check if portable items have mains power options – always cheaper – and get the right rechargeable batteries and charger. • Keep warranties and receipts, know your consumer rights, and ask if there is a repair service or a take back or exchange scheme. • Many supermarkets and electrical stores will take batteries for recycling - avoid discarding them into the refuse bin to go to polluting landfill. Someone somewhere always wants your electrical items, or to recycle its components and materials, so Green Routine suggests giving working unwanted items another life. It is easy to give away items on Freecycle or Freegle, donate them – if working and in good condition - to charity shops or reuse groups, or make money by selling them online or through small ads. Before discarding the non-working items, check about repairs. There is plenty of advice online, while a local call could save buying something new. If it has to go, keep electrical items out of your refuse bin. All recycling sites, including Highbridge and Bridgwater, accept broken items, from phones and TVs to white goods, such as fridges. For full details of all these suggestions, and to sign up for free Green Routine emails, visit www. somersetwaste.gov.uk. Nick Cater is Senior Communications Officer at Somerset Waste Partnership, which manages waste and recycling services on behalf of all local authorities in Somerset.

Time for Tea Campaign At a time when our patients and their families are facing what, for many, is the most challenging time of their lives, St. Margaret’s Hospice staff are there alongside them 24 hours a day, 7 days a week – caring, supporting, enabling, comforting and encouraging: at home, in the Hospice or on the end of the phone. We are asking you to help us by putting the kettle on and making ‘Time for Tea’ to raise funds for the Hospice. Our services are provided free of charge, but they are not without cost. After NHS funding a further £12,600 needs to be raised every day to maintain those services, and we could not do this without the incredible support of people like you. To find out how you can make ‘Time for Tea’ and help St. Margaret’s Hospice continue to bring quality to the lives of those who need us, please contact us on 0845 345 9671.
Fun and Frivolity! With the shorter days and colder weather here now, we thought we would brighten the day up with a talk on 'British Seaside Piers, Fun and Frivolity'! If you fancy a bit of frivolity then come along to the W.I. meeting on Tuesday 26th November at 2pm at the Community Centre in Berrow Road. We will make you feel very welcome and you can come along as a visitor for £3. In this illustrated talk, Robert Tinker gives a fascinating insight into the history of British piers, looking at many around the south coast from the Isle of Wight to Clevedon. He promises to give Burnham-on-Sea pier a mention! Robert was senior engineer at Weston Grand Pier for over 40 years, so we see its development from 1903, through two catastrophic fires, right up to the present day. If you would like to know more about the Women's Institute please contact the President, Brenda Adams, on 01278 781771 or you can contact us via the W.I. website: www.burnhamwi.btck.co.uk.
