Chairman’s Charity Announced Chairman of Sedgemoor District Council, Councillor Peter Downing, has announced the name of the charity which will benefit from any civic fundraising or donations – and he has chosen local charity BARB – Burnham Area Rescue Boat. Cllr Downing said, “I have long been aware of the reassuring presence and help that BARB gives the residents and visitors to Burnham-on-Sea and nearby coastal resorts, particularly during the summer season. The value of BARB is also felt more widely across Sedgemoor District, a good example being the tremendous response by BARB to last winter’s flooding which was invaluable to residents across the Somerset Levels and Moors. We at SDC are very grateful to them and all their volunteers and I should like to recognise their efforts and commitment with some practical encouragement.”

Dog Grooming at Bridgwater College As any dog owner knows, grooming is an important part of dog care. Regular grooming helps to keep a dog healthy, clean and comfortable. It also keeps your dog looking good! As we head into winter, you may find your dog needs grooming more often, as you let its coat grow longer and fluffier, which may then get tangled and dirty – especially if it’s put to the test through wet, muddy and snowy walks! Regular grooming can also increase the dog’s skin circulation and distribute oil, and is an opportunity to find any lumps, bumps or sores, which may be hidden under a thick coat. It’s also important to check your dog’s nails more frequently in the winter, as you may find they are not wearing down so quickly if the dog is not outside as much as in the warmer months. For dog grooming salons this becomes a very busy time, so why not get your dog booked in at Cannington Dog Grooming Salon at Bridgwater College’s Cannington Centre. This salon has the added bonus of offering all the services of bathing, grooming and trimming, but at very competitive prices - starting from just £10 for a basic groom and bath for small dogs. The salon is supervised by a fully-qualified dog groomer and has all the latest equipment to ensure your dog receives a quality service. To learn more about the salon and dog grooming courses at Bridgwater College visit www. canningtondoggrooming.co.uk.

gardening jobs for december As normal, outside work is weather related, so if the weather is good, get on with the jobs that need doing. Finish digging on any part of the garden that needs it. Tidy up sheds, greenhouses and plots, and wash any dirty pots and containers. Fruit trees such as apples and pears can be pruned, but be careful and think through what you are trying to do. Remove dead and damaged growth plus any crossing branches, and clean out the centre of the tree. Check tree stakes and ties. Do not prune stone fruits like plums and cherries as they are prone to silver leaf disease; prune

them instead during warmer months. Consider applying a winter wash on dormant trees. Sow early crops of broad beans, early summer cabbage, and onions and shallots under cover, to plant out later with protection such as cloches or fleece. Continue planting new shrubs and trees if weather permits. Plan ahead for next year by ordering new seeds, potatoes, plants and composts. Take some time off, relax and enjoy yourself and dream about 2015 - the best gardening year you have ever had!

Road Smart: Scheme to reduce road casualties In just one year in Avon and Somerset, 452 people were killed or seriously injured on our roads. Around one third of these were young people aged 17 to 24. To help reduce this figure we have launched a free education course for drivers, and learner drivers, in the force area. Road Smart is available for all drivers, but we are especially keen to encourage young drivers to attend the session. The course has been specially created on behalf of Avon and Somerset Police. It aims to raise awareness of potential hazards on the roads and build on motorists’ existing driving knowledge and experience. • 95% of all collisions are caused by human error. • 1 in 5 new drivers will have a crash within their first six months of driving. • Road crashes are the biggest single killer of young people in the UK. Some insurance companies will offer a discount to young drivers who have completed the workshop. The course is a one-off interactive session and will be held at venues across the force area. It is based on the successful training package that is used for driver awareness courses nationally. Supt Ian Smith said, “This is a fantastic opportunity to benefit from a free course that could be a life-saving opportunity. The training will be delivered by the TTC group, a professional road safety education provider. The national course this is based upon is widely hailed as excellent and thought-provoking and really does influence driver behaviour.” Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Mountstevens said, “I am delighted Avon and Somerset Police have designed a unique road safety package to further educate all road users, but particularly young drivers." Courses can be booked in advance, and will be running until early 2015. There are two versions one for young drivers (aged 17 to 24) and one for other drivers. If you are, or know of, a young driver who would like to join this course, or you are aged 25 or over and interested in attending, go to www.roadsmart.org for further details.

Seasons Greeting from Burnham W.I. As usual, December's meeting is a week early, so it is on Tuesday 16th December at 2pm. We are having our Christmas Social which involves a bit of food and a lot of fun – or a lot of food and a bit of fun, you choose! You will be most welcome to come along to the Community Centre and join us. Our programme for 2015 is coming together and we are definitely going to have a great deal of fun with interesting speakers and some social events. If you want to join the W.I. then January will be a good time to do it. The 100th anniversary of the W.I. is in 2015 so there will be plenty of different things to see and do. It is going to be a once in a lifetime event and we plan to make the most of it! Burnham W.I. is only 37 years old but we have a busy year ahead with displays and exhibitions in Burnham to show the history of the W.I. and what we do now. Membership fees for 2015 will be £36. For this you get 11 meetings in the year, so it works out at only £3.27 per meeting - which is less than going to see a film at the cinema or the cover price of some women's magazines. At the meetings you will get great company, an interesting speaker, and you get to be involved in the largest voluntary woman's organisation in the UK. For more information about the afternoon group please contact The President, Brenda Adams on 01278 781771 or go to our website: www.burnhamwi.btck.co.uk. In the New Year there will be two W.I.s in Burnham to choose from - one in the afternoon, and a new evening group. The afternoon group meets on the fourth Tuesday of the month from 2pm in the Community Centre. If you want to know more about the new evening group then please contact Brenda on 01278 781771 or email her at adams2324@aol.com. The Burnham-on-Sea Woman’s Institute wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Doors open at 7pm and the performance will start at 7.45pm. The Christmas Concert has become established as one of the highlights of the band’s concert year and, in the past, in spite of appalling weather, has played to near capacity audiences. The concert will contain a mixture of seasonal, light music and solo numbers to celebrate the festive season. The price of admission is held at £6 (£5 for concessions), and tickets are available from the Princess Box Office. All seats are bookable.

Look before you book that Christmas event Thinking of eating out this Christmas? If you’re planning that special Christmas meal with work colleagues, friends or family, Sedgemoor District Council’s food safety team would like to remind you to ‘look before you book’. Christmas is a time to enjoy good company and food without worrying about food poisoning. But the truth is, you can’t tell a restaurant’s hygiene standards by how clean and tidy the staff look or by how busy it is. It’s the things you can’t see – like germs spread by bad hygiene practices, that you need to consider. There’s one easy way to set your mind at rest – check the food hygiene rating. The food hygiene rating tells you about hygiene standards in restaurants and other food businesses. It’s really easy to check. Just go online and check the Food Standards Agency website: www.food.gov.uk/ratings, or if you’re out and about check for the green and black sticker; if you can’t see one, just ask. The ratings are determined by local authority food safety officers and run from 0-5, with a 5 rating meaning a very good level of food hygiene. Around 93% of food businesses are rated 3 or better so there are plenty of places with good standards, and you can easily avoid taking your family to those not meeting the grade. If you don’t see a green and black sticker in the window or you spot a low rating online, you can make a better informed choice. For more information, visit www.food.gov.uk/business-industry/caterers/hygieneratings.

Weight Loss Challenge As I am sure you are aware, the Obesity and Diabetes rates are on the increase and the Government are keen to bring these down. It has been found that 70% of people in a doctors’ waiting room could have been avoided, with better nutrition. I am running this group to raise people’s awareness of this and to encourage better nutrition. The Weight Loss Challenge runs for 12 weeks, covering different subjects such as protein, sugars, water etc., and encourages people to think about food they choose, not only for themselves, but for their family. It will also encourage them to choose and understand the long-term benefits of a healthy active lifestyle. We are charging £39 for the course, as we have to cover the cost of the room and refreshments, but the rest of the money will be put into a pot to make up a prize fund for the person who has lost the biggest fat percentage, to win. So potentially, the smallest person in the room could win, making it a fair challenge. Hopefully the money incentive will encourage people to make positive changes to their diet to support their long-term health. Dance Fit are supporting us and are offering half price classes to all who attend the course. As we are not profiting from this, we are asking for support to spread the word. Please do not hesitate to contact me for more information on 07833 469357, or you can contact Dance Fit. We will be starting a new Challenge in the New Year.

Burnham and Highbridge Gateway Club The Management Committee of the Gateway Club requires an Honorary Secretary. Anyone interested, please contact the Chairman at Burnham Area Youth Centre, Cassis Close between 7pm9pm Thursday evenings. The Club members recently did a sponsored walk around Apex Park. On 11th December, Club members and helpers will have their Christmas meal,a disco at Windmill Club & Restaurant, 18th December the Town Band will be playing Carols.

Burnham-on-Sea Farmers’ Market: Sharon Newton of ‘A-Lot-A-Choc’ Bringing seriously good chocolate to the lovely people of Burnham... Always a foodie, Sharon recently switched the corporate world for life as a market trader! She’s relishing setting up her stall during the early hours in all winds and weathers, ready to meet and greet the lovely people wanting to indulge in seriously good chocolate. Sharon says, “Burnham is a great venue and many locals are genuinely interested in the origin of my chocolate. It's important to me to take the time to tell my chocolate story, both residents and visitors to Burnham embrace the whole ethos of ethical sourcing. Of course the UK doesn't have cacao farms, so I have to source my cacao from further afield, but just a few miles away in good ole Weston-super-Mare, locked away in my little chocolate studio, I create what is said to be the ‘best chocolate ever!’” A-Lot-A-Choc is very excited about being part of the regular farmers’ market, and is all set for the town’s Food and Drink Festival too. It's great to have such passion about food in Burnham, and the loyal customers of the farmers’ market embrace the local producers and the vibe of the town on market day. Sharon was taught the art of chocolate making in France, and loves sharing with her teacher and mentor tales of her new chocolate life here in the UK. They are both encouraged by the number of children who enjoy dark chocolate, and how all ages are appreciating the many health benefits of cacao. So, here's to sharing the chocolate love in and around Burnham. Sharon is looking forward to seeing you all and hopes you feel free to ask questions about chocolate. She says, “It's a super food and very misunderstood.”

Whatever your musical tastes, you can be assured of a most enjoyable evening with this Band, in the surroundings of our warm, comfortable and acoustically-efficient Gothic church. Tickets £6 (including programme and refreshments) available on the door. Accompanied children free. Parking available in Church Car Park, Vicarage Lane, opposite Church.

Green your Christmas For Burnham-on-Sea families a thrifty and ‘green’ Christmas, saving money and resources while still enjoying all the festive fun, is easy to plan. Wish lists help spot-on giving, so nothing is discarded on Christmas morning, and think about quality gifts that will last, items made from recycled materials, or low-waste presents, from experience days to online magazine subscriptions. Wrapping can also be low waste, with recycled paper, e-cards, turning last year’s cards into gift tags, and substituting wool or fabric for sticky tape; yes, brown paper packages tied up with string can be a favourite thing! And for décor, deck the halls with boughs of holly and much more from the garden, as that can be home composted, and reuse anything colourful to dress the tree. Avoiding food waste is simple, such as being careful with portions, buying only what is needed, and freezing leftovers for later, with great recipe ideas from the Love Food Hate Waste campaign: www.lovefoodhatewaste.com. Festive holidays mean collections move back at least one day, so pick-ups due on Thursday 25th December will take place on Saturday 27th December, Friday 26th December on Sunday 28th December, Thursday 1st January on Friday 2nd January, Friday 2nd January on Saturday 3rd January. Almost everything festive – from trees to bottles and cards, satsuma peel to wrapping paper and foil mince pie cases – can be recycled through home composting, kerbside containers, recycling sites, or by taking batteries, plastic bags and more to supermarkets. If the weather turns severe, check SWP’s website, Facebook or Twitter for information. For more on Christmas, waste services and severe weather, check www.somersetwaste.gov.uk, call your district council customer services about collections, or Somerset Direct on 0845 345 9188 about recycling sites. Nick Cater is Senior Communications Officer at Somerset Waste Partnership, which manages waste and recycling services on behalf of all local authorities in Somerset.

Showcase your Photos in Somerset Calendar Somerset Wildlife Trust is looking for 12 stunning images to feature in its 'Wild Somerset' calendar for 2016. Photographs can be of plants, animals, insects, landscapes or coastlines, but must be taken within Somerset. The calendar images will be selected from the Trust’s annual photographic competition, with entries made online before December 31st. The 12 images will go forward for ‘The People’s Choice’, with the public invited to vote for their favourite. Beth Jerrett, Somerset Wildlife Trust PR & Communications Manager, said: “We’re looking for images that showcase the diversity of wildlife and wild places in the county. Photographs with a strong seasonal flavour and in a landscape format are ideal for our popular ‘Wild Somerset’ calendar.” The Trust’s ‘Wild Somerset’ calendar for 2015 is available to buy online now and features a selection of stunning images all taken by the charity’s talented members and supporters. It is an A4-sized, wall calendar, on sale at £5.99 (plus P&P.) All profits go towards supporting the charity’s work protecting vulnerable wildlife and preserving wild places. To enter the competition or to buy a calendar, visit www.somersetwildlife.org. Competition entries: Always remember when taking photographs of wildlife, that the welfare of the subject is more important than the image. Each photographer can submit up to 4 images and is required to supply a few words about their photographs (e.g. where it was taken and when, and why what it captures is so special.) Digital images only please - competition closes at 12 noon on December 31st 2014.
