From the editor Welcome to the February edition of LocalReach. Inside this issue you will find information about quiz nights, swimarathons and bingo, along with a host of other events being organised during the month. Many groups in the area are seeking new members, so with a new year, maybe you could start a new hobby or interest. Ian Jefferies, Tourism Manager, is trying to coordinate local groups and organisations who are busy planning events for the forthcoming year, and is keen to have the dates for your events to be included in the calendar available through the website. This is also to try and avoid clashes of big events taking place in the area. More information within this month’s LocalReach. If you would like to advertise your event and you are a non-profit making group or charity, the editorial space in LocalReach is free! Rotary Heritage Tractor Run Raises £7,000! The Rotary Club of Burnham-on-Sea’s Heritage Tractor Run to Land’s End, started from Pier Street Burnham-on-Sea at 9am on Thursday 22 August, with three Ferguson tractors heading off to Land’s End, to raise funds for the Air Ambulance Trusts of Dorset & Somerset, Devon, and Cornwall, and to increase awareness of Rotary. Sponsorship, nearly all from Somerset and Dorset, raised almost £7,000, and a cheque for this sum was presented by the Rotary Club to Colin Thomas, representative of the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance. Thanking the Club for its efforts, Colin explained how the recent problems affecting the Bond helicopter had been rectified within 24 hours, and that each mission flown costs around £2,500, so that effectively three mercy flights have been paid for by the event. The presentation was enhanced by carols sung by ‘Burnham On Song’, under the musical direction of their founder, Siobhan Johnson.

Wassailing Event Raises £2,000 for Breast Cancer Charity A highly successful traditional Somerset wassailing held on Saturday 11 January, at Rich’s Cider Farm, Watchfield, has raised £2,000 for B.U.S.T., the Breast Cancer Unit Support Trust. The event, promoted jointly by the Rotary Club of Burnham-on-Sea and Rich’s Cider, featured musical entertainment by The Mangled Worzels and Bob Darch, washed down with copious quantities of Rich’s Cider and other refreshments. Fortunately the evening although cold, was fine. The Wassailing Princess was carried shoulder high on a sedan chair in the traditional manner to the Cider Tree where the invocation was made to the trees to bear good fruit for the coming year’s harvest, and shots were fired to ward off evil spirits.
Money Advice Sessions Sedgemoor District Council has teamed up with the Money Advice Service (www.moneyadviceservice. org.uk) to bring more sessions for residents to discuss their financial problems. The sessions are planned for 12 and 26 February, and 12 and 26 March. They will be held at Bridgwater House, King Square, Bridgwater. People can book an individual interview with a trained expert, who can offer help and advice on getting back to the financial straight and narrow. Just call into Bridgwater House reception; phone 0845 408 2540 or email customerservices@sedgemoor.gov.uk to make an appointment.
Family History Society The group will continue in 2014 with a new committee. On Thursday 6 February the speaker will be Hazel Hudson, and her talk is entitled ‘Sowing Wild Oats – Bastardy and Baby Farming’. Food and Drink Festivals We hope you have marked your 2014 diaries with the date for the Burnhamon-Sea Food and Drink Festivals - Saturday 24 May & 25 October. We have listened to your feedback on what works well and where you want to see changes. This is a delicate balancing act as we have the interests of traders, visitors and local businesses to take into account. Most of the changes are incremental, but the biggest one is the moving of the autumn festival back to October. This is to coincide with the autumn half term. We will have the three indoors venues full of stallholders: Baptist Hall, Methodist Church & Princess Theatre. We are back at Somerset Skills & Learning, the home of ‘The Great Burnham Bake Off’, sponsored by Positive Wealth Creation. ‘The Great Burnham Brew Off’ homebrew competition returns at The Princess Theatre, sponsored by Balliihoo, and will have classes for cider, kit wine and hedgerow wine. Download entry forms for both competitions from www.burnhamonseafoodfestival.org There is a new event in May when we host the south west England heat of an international cooking competition - The ‘Chilli Cook-Off’, sponsored by Saxons Estate Agents. Teams can enter now online to be in with a chance of winning a £200 cash prize and a place in the UK finals. Entrants need to cook a chilli from scratch, within four hours, which will then be judged, and samples sold to raise funds for Highbridge Food Bank and the Coastguards Association. www.ukchillicookoff.co.uk/content/swe-chilli-cook The outdoor market on Victoria Street will be back with a wide range of food and drink to enjoy whilst at the festival. To help you make a day of it we will have seating in this area with some busking style entertainment. We will also be looking out for more children's entertainment including some massive tractors and hopefully some farm animals too. We hope that this has whetted your appetites for what will be on offer in May and October. You can email us your ideas and suggestions anytime at bosfoodfest@gmail.com and join us in Twitter-land and on Facebook.

Lambing Fun Day After the heavy rainfall and dark skies that the winter months have brought with them, the lighter evenings, glimpse of a snowdrop or two, and new-born lambs jumping around the local fields, are the first signs of Spring. At Bridgwater College’s Cannington Centre, lambing season is in full swing. If you haven’t been to the College’s Lambing Fun Day event before, then put the date in your diary for a real treat! As the name suggests, it really is a great day out for all the family, and takes place this year on Sunday 16 March. The event improves year on year, with more to see and do than ever before – and this year’s very special guest is Tractor Ted – a real favourite of the young and young at heart! Tickets can be bought on the day, or with a 20% discount if bought in advance. Advance tickets can be bought through the College’s online store: www.bridgwater.ac.uk There are lots of activities lined up for the day, with sheep dog demonstrations, sheep shearing, milking demonstrations, ferret racing and tractor trailer rides, plus many more. There will be marquees dedicated to food and drink and children’s activities, and of course a chance to see and hold the ever-so-cute new-born lambs. Jeremy Kerswell, Head of Land-based Studies at the College says: “This event is always very popular and a great way for the community to see the College’s working farm in Cannington. So many people put on their wellies and join us for the day, immersing themselves in all the activities and watching the demonstrations. The tractor trailer rides and sheep shearing are especially popular with the children, and everyone enjoys browsing the product stalls and sampling local produce, available to buy. “We’ve often had lambs born during the event day, and it is a wonderful opportunity for visitors to see the new-borns and enjoy a cuddle with some of the more confident lambs. The feedback we receive from the public is always very positive, and we are looking forward to this year’s event and meeting many new visitors to Rodway Farm.”

A Purrrfect Production The Burnham District Pantomime Society would like to say thank you to everyone who took part or helped in any way with the production of ‘Puss in Boots’, whether with loaned items or taking adverts in the programme, and of course our audiences who came to see it. Thank you - we hope you enjoyed it and will come again next year! Our regulars will have noticed a familiar face was missing in the auditorium, that of Bob Buckler who has been our front of house head for many years and a member of our society for over forty. He sadly passed away on Christmas Eve; he was a gentleman well-loved by all. We will miss you greatly, God bless. We always welcome new members and still meet at the Princess on the first Friday of the month at 7.30pm. We will be planning our next pantomime soon, so watch this space for audition dates. If you are looking for costumes and props for your production, or fancy dress, we do hire items at very reasonable rates. Chair Mo Cooper – Burnham District Pantomime Society.
Burnham & District Model Railway Club The Club was founded in 1976 with the aim of furthering the model railway hobby within Sedgemoor area of Somerset. We organise two exhibitions each year, the largest being Sedgemoor Rail, normally held over the August Bank Holiday weekend at King Alfred school. The other is North Petherton Show, held before Christmas. The club commissions limited edition wagons in OO gauge. Some of the monies go to charities, and we have been able to give in excess of £23000 so far. We are looking for new members to join us, so if your interest is model railways (any gauge), please come along to Burnham Community Centre, Berrow Road, on a Tuesday or Thursday after at 7pm (we are on the first floor, turn left at the top of the stairs). We look forward to meeting you. For more information visit www.burnhamanddmrc.co.uk

Update on Fibre Broadband As you may be aware, the Burnham-on-Sea BT exchange was upgraded to allow fibre optic broadband several months ago, but as this technology required cabling to be run to the green cabinets dotted around the area, and having visited many local clients, I can report that there are still large gaps which do not have the capability of this exciting technology. I can now report that the Brambles Road area can now access fibre broadband. If you are a BT or Plusnet customer, you check to see if you can receive fibre broadband by visiting http://dslchecker.bt.com and put in your phone number. If you are not a BT customer, you can still use the same website and check your postcode (if your phone number does not work), although sometimes by checking by postcode, it does not always show if you can access the fibre system. If this is the case, you will need to contact your Internet provider directly to see if this is possible. Areas that have fibre broadband (in most cases) that particularly benefit from it, are East Huntspill and Berrow. Parts of Highbridge have fibre broadband (mainly the ones closest to Burnham), but I find for the majority this is yet to come Hopefully BT Openreach will do this work fairly soon – quite often you can see the large vans laying new cables when fibre is being installed – keep an eye out for this!! On another matter, for those of you running 'Microsoft Security Essentials', I have experienced many cases recently where viruses have infiltrated computers where Security Essentials is the main anti-virus product. My advice would be to use a decent paid offering as my view is that the free ant-virus products simply do not work. They scan and confirm that the computer is clean, but in hundreds of cases that I have personally dealt with, they do not detect threats. Free anti-virus is often a clever ploy to give people some free usage before the product suddenly runs out, then payment is requested for a full price version – please get in touch if you need any help with antivirus. Give Waste Some Space Stay road safe and let collection crews have the time to do their job for you - by Nick Cater Ever been stuck behind a recycling or refuse lorry in Burnhamon-Sea? And how did you react? Like the vast majority of drivers, I expect you waited patiently, knowing that the Somerset Waste Partnership crews have an important job to do for you and everyone else. But a few motorists get frustrated and put themselves and the crews in danger. Waste collection firms' terse safety records show the results: "Dangerous driving, eight cases; vehicles mounting the pavement, 12 cases; aggressive behaviour, seven cases ... third party mounted pavement and hit operative." Luckily, only some of these cases - like the last example - are from Somerset. Drivers can be delayed when a large Somerset Waste Partnership (SWP) vehicle makes its house to house collections. If that is a big problem, calling Sedgemoor District Council customer services is the right response. Most drivers are understanding, but a tiny minority resort to anything from verbal abuse to racing by on the pavement and even physically attacking staff. Such unjustified behaviour could see them facing charges if staff are hit by a vehicle, put at risk, threatened, or assaulted. Drivers finding themselves behind a slow moving recycling or refuse truck have several options, such as calmly accepting the inevitable or finding another route and making a mental note to avoid the collection truck's regular round next time. The plea is simple: collecting your recycling and refuse will occasionally mean a delay, so please be patient and give hard-working crews the safe space to do their work. If you witness a driver behaving badly, stay safe but take notes and let SWP know via the district council. Nick Cater is Senior Communications Officer at Somerset Waste Partnership.

Time To Do Something New? A new year’s resolution is often about giving something up, but Somerset Skills & Learning think it is much more exciting to start something new as a resolution. From learning a new language to getting fit in Pilates, the new mini Adult Learning Guide from Somerset Skills & Learning has lots of great ideas. For example, did you get a new iPad for Christmas? Then you could enrol on a ‘Getting to Know your iPad’ five week course and get the most out of it. Do you enjoy painting? Give yourself new challenges and sign up for a ten week course on ‘Acrylics for Beginners’ to help develop your creative skills. Last year Rosie Smith was brought a watercolour course by her son. She says, “On Christmas day, my son handed over a present of a load of watercolour materials. I have always fancied learning how to paint, but I thought this present was a bit much, until I opened the second present and it was a Beginner’s Watercolour course from Somerset Skills & Learning. Perfect! The class was very friendly and I am still enjoying my painting a year on. It was a great present.” There are lots of interesting courses that can inspire you to do something new. The new mini guide is now available from Somerset Skills & Learning centres, libraries and various outlets across Somerset. It is also available online at www.learnsomerset.co.uk If your new year’s resolution is to improve your employment opportunities, then there are also lots of useful courses and training opportunities available, from upgrading your computer skills, to getting an apprenticeship or traineeship. If you know someone aged between 16 and 18, there is a guaranteed offer of learning for anyone who approaches Somerset Skills & Learning looking for training. Call 01278 426828 to enquire about training, or call 0845 688 0488 to enrol on a course.

Ian Jefferies, Tourism Manager at BiARS, has organised a meeting to take place at the Bay Centre on Thursday 30 January at 7pm. This will be an opportunity to link with other groups and coordinate the activities planned for the coming year. For more details contact Ian at the Information Centre.
Once Upon a Time in Burnham – The Spa The history of any part of town, particularly a small one such as Burnham, cannot be told in isolation as it is not possible to follow one strand of thought without finding that it is inextricably entwined with several others. The Spa is a case in point where its origins are in the problems of shipping and safety at sea and its legacy is in the number of the oldest buildings on the Esplanade. In 1827 the Rev. Davies came to an arrangement with the diocesan authorities whereby an exchange took place of land belonging to him for land that belonged to the church. On completion of the deal he owned all the land west of the church and vicarage from what is now Vicarage Street, northwards to where George Reed later built Catharine Terrace. This land he developed into the spa complex, later to be known as Daviesville, which comprised of the old lighthouse building, Marina House, Marina Cottage, Steart House, which was originally the bath house, together with North and South Myrtles, which were residential properties. At that time there was no esplanade, so all these properties were accessed by a carriage sweep from Berrow Road, the line of which was not dissimilar from that now followed by Myrtle Drive. The benefits attributed to “taking the waters” here were extolled by Doctor G Henning in 1836 when he published a paper entitled ‘An historical account of the medicinal waters, or medicinal springs of Daviesville at Burnham to which are subjoined copious analysis of their component parts; an enumeration and description of the diseases in which they are more particularly serviceable and suitable directions for the guidance of invalids’. Although its waters compared favourably with those of Bath and Buxton, it was always on a losing wicket as soon as the novelty of its fashionable newness wore off, because, unlike Bath and Cheltenham, Burnham had little to offer in the way of entertainment – Bath had the Theatre Royal, and Cheltenham boasted a beautiful Opera House. The final nail in the coffin was driven in by the advent of the railway and the paddle steamers from Cardiff – the ‘upper classes’ had no desire to have their relaxation disturbed by hoards of the Hoi Polloi cavorting on the beach and in the town, enjoying themselves, and by 1870 it was on its last legs. Thanks to Bob Thomas for the history of Burnham and the surrounding area.

FEBRUARY Work in the Garden The Flower Garden
Vegetables
If the weather is favourable, divide and replant herbaceous plants.
The secret of success in the vegetable garden is to sow as early as the weather permits.
Place dahlia tubers in boxes and lightly cover with soil to induce new shoots.
Broad beans and peas can be sown in the garden.
If frost continues you may need to protect new growth on some plants. Climbing roses should be trimmed and trained.
Shallots can also be planted - push the bulbs half way into the soil. There should be 8” between each bulb and at least 1ft between the rows. When buying tomato plants, pick sturdy plants with thick stems, which are short jointed and have dark green foliage.
For more tips, why not join your local gardening group? The Burnham and District Horticultural Society meets at 7.30pm on the third Monday of each month (except December) at the Community Centre, Berrow Road. On Monday 17th February, with a talk from the Gardens Group Gold Club on ‘Planning a Border’ All welcome - members of the Society free, visitors £1.

The Sunlight Mental Health Library for people to borrow books - all free of charge - is open every Tuesday morning 10am – midday at the BAY Centre. Raw Comedy at the Bridgwater Arts Centre Last year Somerset Skills & Learning ran a comedy workshop for people interested in doing stand-up comedy. On 13 February, you can see members of this group try out their routines for free at the Bridgwater Arts Centre. At the workshops, learners explored techniques for developing comic material and a comedy stage presence. People came from as far as Bath, Minehead and Weston-super-Mare to develop and explore their stand-up comedy potential. The evening will be hosted by local up and coming comedian Niki McCretton, who recently took her new stand-up routine on tour to positive reviews, and there will be at least three new acts trying to make the audience laugh. One of the learners trying out new material is Stewart Gamble from Taunton, who has been travelling to Bristol, Bath and London to try his material out with new audiences. Another is Ade Bowen from Weston-super-Mare. He told us, “I think to live a full life you need to do something that scares you every day. Doing this is not scary, it’s terrifying – I may have bit off more than I can chew. I wrote a scary song about it yesterday using just three chords. It gave me the EBGBs!” The evening starts at 8pm in the bar area of the Bridgwater Arts Centre. Entry is free. If anybody wants to have a go themselves, the programme has the space. It is about developing opportunities for new comic talent, so if anybody has some comedy material they would like to try in front of a live audience, email abowen@somerset.gov.uk or call Ade on 01278 783057 to book yourself in. Ade told us, “It is hoped this evening will generate some interest to run another comedy workshop around April. It would be great to put Bridgwater on the comedy map, so please get in touch, or come along and support the new acts on the night.”
