From the editor Welcome to the July edition of LocalReach. This month shows no let up of the events taking place in the local area; with summer just around the corner let’s hope that the weather stays dry for those groups planning outside activities. With Volunteer Week at the beginning of June, it is still not too late to volunteer your time to one of the good causes in the local area. Now the town is deemed coach-friendly, maybe helping to meet and greet the visitors interests you, or helping in the Information Centre. If you like the outdoors, then volunteering with Berrow Conservation Group, Friends of Apex Park, or Marine Cove may be more appropriate. With a good audience, LocalReach is able to publicise events or activities to over 9000 households for free. Please get in touch with your editorial if you are a charity or non-profit making organisation. August issue deadline is Friday 4th July. Jacqui Strong, LocalReach Community Editor. jacqui@localreach.co.uk

Youth Parade and Carnival Queen’s Fun Day The date has been confirmed for the annual Youth Parade and Carnival Queen’s Fun Day for groups in Burnham and Highbridge, on Saturday 12th July starting at 11am. The event will commence on the Saturday with a youth parade (similar to the Jubilee Parade and summer parade last year), and then on to the seafront. We are hoping many groups involved with youth activities will take part in this event and show the great things on offer for the younger members of our towns. After the youth parade there will be a sandcastle building competition and the Carnival Queen's Fun Day. If you would like to help with the fun day please contact Emma at dancin19@hotmail.co.uk. All Youth groups are welcome to stay, promote and participate in the afternoon entertainment. If your group wishes to get involved in this event then please contact us. Emma Nicholson said, “When crowned in September, I was determined to do something unforgettable with my year as Carnival Queen. I also wanted to raise money for charity and the Burnham Pantomime Society. So as part of the youth parade I will be organising a fun day for the community; there will be games, raffle, bouncy castle, displays and lots more fun things for everyone to get involved in. “One of the charities is the Think Amy road safety charity. I chose this because I wanted to do something for children and my mum's cousin was killed in a road accident in 1995, so I feel being aware of road safety is important for everyone including children.” Jonathan Smith co-organiser added, “The event is still open for craft stalls and groups to get involved with, so get in touch with jonathan@boshevents.org.uk .”

Play Day 2014 Calling all families!! This year’s Annual Play Day at the Apex Park is taking place on Wednesday 6th August between 10am and 3pm. As in previous years, there will be a host of activities available for the children and their families to participate in. The event relies heavily on fund raising and donations, and so for the security of future events, please support this well-organised and attended event.

Easy advice for those going al fresco

Green goals: eat, drink and be less wasteful By Nick Cater Whether celebrating the World Cup or just enjoying any sunny weather that comes our way, families and friends in Burnham-on-Sea are sure to be heading for the garden, beach, park or festival this month, to enjoy a spot of al fresco dining or a classic barbecue. All that eating and drinking, especially when away from home, can make a lot of waste, with cans, plastic and glass bottles, and leftover food all too easily chucked together in black sacks to head for the refuse bin and costly, polluting landfill. Yet a few minutes’ planning means anyone can score their own World Cup hat-trick by ensuring less waste and more recycling, and even save money by making the best use of any food or drink. Among the simple tips: Plan the party to minimise waste, and make the most of leftovers. For food waste, compost what you can, and put the rest in the recycling bin. Recycle empty food and drink cans, and the glass and plastic bottles. Know the numbers coming, to avoid making or bringing too much food or drink, and limit food waste by keeping it in the fridge or cool box until needed; ensure it is covered, and do not overfill people’s plates. Anything uneaten can then go back into the fridge or freezer for delicious snacks or tasty later meals, from using sausages, chicken and any other meats in a pasta dish, to turning vegetables into soups. Another simple way to reduce waste or unnecessary recycling, is avoiding over-packaged products, so why not try jugs of water or squash, not individual cartons or cans, and home-made food rather than shop-bought supplies. Got more for recycling than fits your kerbside boxes? For small amounts, put them in carrier bags beside the boxes; for large quantities, separate materials and take them to the recycling centres at Highbridge (open five days a week) or Bridgwater (open every day). Have a great day. Nick Cater is Senior Communications Officer at Somerset Waste Partnership, which manages waste and recycling services on behalf of all local authorities in Somerset: www.somersetwaste.gov.uk.

Major Play and Parks Investment Continues Across Sedgemoor The Apex Skate Park in Highbridge, will close to users on Monday 7th July to allow for extensive replacement of the equipment. Subject to weather conditions, the skate park upgrade will re-open on Friday 1st August, allowing use throughout the majority of the summer holidays. This period of time will allow Sedgemoor District Council to remove the existing ramps, repair the tarmac surface and have the new ramps installed. The Apex Skate Park equipment, which was originally installed in 2002, has reached the end of its useful life and requires replacement. £72,994 will be spent on the upgrade, with £58,395.20 of this funding coming from RLT3 developer funds for outdoor sport. Sedgemoor District Council is providing the additional funding required. The works include a new Half Pipe, Quarter Pipe, Planter, Wedge Flats, Bank Ramps and Pyramid Corner Ramp. Jupiter Play will be delivering the project using fastener free ramps which provide a smooth riding experience and require little on-going maintenance and have a long life expectancy. More Security Warnings Over the last month, I have received many enquiries about the latest security threats as identified in the media. Personally, I think the seriousness of this has been blown out of all proportion, but it has helped bring attention to what can happen if computer security is not taken seriously. It is worth noting that such threats are not always virus related. For example, you may receive what appears to be a very plausible e-mail from your bank, but by clicking onto the link provided within the e-mail, can take you to a “phishing” site which is a website made to look exactly like your bank, but has actually been created to obtain your details, when you key in various requested pieces of information. Any device is susceptible to such attacks! In particular Apple Mac owners have been told that their machines cannot get a virus, but there has been several reported virus attacks on the Mac OSX system, so I would still advise buying security software for these computers. There is also a belief that Apps on various platforms can interrogate your contacts list and other areas on your device, so the best advice is to only stick to Apps created by trusted companies, or have good reviews on the App store. Here are some tips to remember to keep your computer secure: 1) Don’t open any links in unsolicited e-mails. 2) Make sure your security software is the latest version – most companies release a new version every year but often do not make it easy for end users to update, even though the update is free in most cases. I do not advocate any free anti-virus package – in my opinion they simply do not cover a wide enough range of threats. 3) Do not have the same password on every website. 4) Keep a good backup of your data and make sure that the backup is actually working. The advice that I give to my customers is to have the computer checked once a year – a good computer professional will know what to update and check for to make sure your system is as secure as it can be. If you think you would benefit from a computer check-up, please contact me on sales@e-cps.co.uk or telephone 01278 787846 or 07973 536299. Neil Buzzard, Computer Problem Solutions Ltd.

Local Charity Receives Boost at Concert “So moving, you lifted the roof”, “Fantastic!” - these are a few comments given by people who attended the Burnham & Highbridge Choral Society’s Spring concert on Saturday 10th May at St. John’s Church, Highbridge. The evening began on a high with Burnham’s Co-operative Funeralcare presenting the society, (which is a registered charity), with a donation of £500. The evening included music from Handel’s Four Coronation Anthems and Messiah, also songs from West Side Story and various other composers. The applause for many of the pieces continued for some time. Guest soloist Mary Morgan sang moving pieces from the composer Grieg. She also accompanied the choir during Messiah, along with a twelve orchestral ensemble. The society would like to thank the audience for their continued support throughout the year and the generous donation which helps us to provide quality performances with the addition of soloists and orchestras. You can keep up with the Society by visiting their Facebook page – Burnham and Highbridge Choral Society. This is a community page and accessible to all. Dates for your diaries: Our next concert is on Thursday 11th December, at St. John’s Church, Highbridge, and we have Come and Sing Day on 18th October, at the Methodist Church Hall, College St. Burnham-on-Sea. If you want to find a volunteering opportunity or if your community group needs help in recruiting volunteers, then Volunteer Centre Mendip & Sedgemoor can help. Just call us on 01749 346830 or email: volunteeringmcs@mbzonline.net. We are no longer based in Bridgwater but will be popping up in the community, so look out for us near you soon. You can find information and resources for Volunteers’ Week and lots more on our website: www.mendipcommunitysupport.org.uk.

Oasis Café The next Burnham Oasis Cafe is on 6th July, 6pm until 9pm at the Princess Theatre. Somerset Rebels Speedway Speedway riders are the modern-day gladiators of the sporting world, 4 riders per race going head to head on 500cc motorbikes over 4 laps of the shale-based oval track, the bikes accelerating from 0-60mph in just 3 seconds, faster than an F1 racing car, but have no gears and NO BRAKES! The Somerset Rebels are one of a number of speedway clubs that operate in the UK from Plymouth in the south to Edinburgh in the north, their Oaktree Arena track being situated just off junction 22 on the M5, they race their home matches most Friday nights throughout the speedway season that operates from mid-March until the end of October. Formed in just 2000, the Somerset Rebels currently operate in the sport’s Premier League, which is the 2nd tier of racing in the UK, their Oaktree Arena track, which is 300 metres in length, is widely acknowledged to be one of the best speedway tracks in the UK, a fact borne out by the fact that Sky Sports are annual visitors to the track in order to broadcast one of the Rebels home matches, and will, once again, be bringing their cameras to the Oaktree Arena on Tuesday 11th June. A speedway meeting comprises 15 heats of pulsating action of what must be one of the most extreme spectator sports in the UK, but it is also one that appeals to fans of all ages, from 1-91! Somerset meetings get underway at 7.30pm, but from when the gates open at 5.30pm until 7pm fans can enter the pits where you can watch the riders prepare their bikes, take photos and also have a chat to the riders – what other sport can you get ‘up close and personal’ with the main people. Kids can also apply to be meeting mascots or hold birthday parties in the Oaktree Clubhouse adjacent to the track. Looking for a team bonding night out or something different to treat your staff then have a look at the Rebels website to see our offers and discounts or just simply email us. So why not give it a try, we know that you won’t be disappointed……… www.somersetrebels.co.uk

The Coffee Morning that's Different!! You are missing a treat if you haven't yet tried the monthly coffee morning at the Community Centre. We don't just serve good coffee at a reasonable price, our cake making team produces a selection of really great homemade cakes - no shop bought stuff here! There are always some interesting stalls and tabletops offering items from collectibles to art and books, plants in season, and variations from month to month. Not forgetting Yvonne's ‘fashion boutique’ (where she finds these bargain pre-owned clothes we have no idea, but you might be surprised when you come in for a browse). The atmosphere is both friendly and comfortable so you can always be sure of a warm welcome. The coffee morning is held on the first Saturday of each month from 10am-12 noon, and the best of it is that every penny you spend goes into the fund that has rescued our Community Centre from being a shabby run-down little-used building, into a vibrant, attractive asset for everyone in the Burnham and Highbridge area. Major building work has been carried out, and there’s more to come! For newcomers, the Community Centre is next door to the swimming pool, Berrow Road, Burnham-on-Sea. The Friends of the Community Centre look forward to meeting you at the next coffee morning on Saturday 5th July.

IT for the Terrified For all your computer training needs, a skill-sharing, community project. Run by a committee; staffed by volunteers. The group does not meet for the whole of the school holidays - from 18 July until September, but there’s still three weeks in July for you to book for a 1:1 lesson with one of our volunteers! We can cover most topics on most computers/devices at most levels. We also run a Computer Club on Thursday afternoons at 1.30pm-3.30pm – short tutor-led group tuition, followed by Question Time, and then the all-important coffee and biscuits! This is an ideal time to call in to ask a quick 5 minute question instead of booking a full 2 hours. For information contact us on 01934 741751 or email itfortheterrified@btconnect.com or check out www. itfortheterrified.co.uk. IT for the Terrified, The Old Cowshed, Station Road, Cheddar, BS27 3AG. (Next to the War Memorial - not the Market Cross). Registered Charity No. 1130308. If you can spare two hours a week and have skills on any level, including basics, that you would like to share with others, please get in touch.
