LOCALREACH BURNHAM, LOCALREACH BERROW & HIGHBRIDGE BURNHAM & HIGHBRIDGE ADVERTISING

From the editor Welcome to the September edition of LocalReach; it really is a packed edition! There are play readings taking place at West Huntspill Players, music at the Princess Theatre and Arts Centre, community events and Carnival Queen celebrations. With autumn setting-in, there is plenty to do, whether it’s a new hobby like the WI with their crafty talk for September, or taking up flower arranging, and not forgetting the ever-popular bowls. There is often not enough time to fit in all the things you want to do, with my ballroom dancing lessons (not quite strictly standard!) moving to Churchfield School and the chance to try Rock and Roll as of September, plus working towards my grade 1 in piano – finding the time is a big problem! I hope you enjoy this month’s edition - it always makes me smile when putting together the editorial and seeing what is coming up in the months ahead. Thank you for your continued support.

October issue deadline is Friday 12th September. Jacqui Strong, LocalReach Community Editor. jacqui@localreach.co.uk

In One Word As part of the Word Play project, the Strong Family are challenging the local community to describe Burnham or Highbridge in just one word. Take your one word either to the Princess Theatre and Arts Centre or The Burnham Information Centre and drop it in the box. If you see us out in town, we will be asking locals and visitors to write on our wipe board and have their photo taken with their ‘word’. We want to know what the towns mean to you; the photos will be collated and turned into a slide show for the celebration event on 20th September at the Princess Theatre. So waste no time, pop along to one of the venues above or email Jacqui.strong@hotmail.co.uk with the word that says what the towns mean to you. Keep it clean and respectful as my children are collating the words! Please get involved as part of our What Change project.

Summer Challenge with What Change An exciting new project called What Change has been encouraging people in Burnham and Highbridge to think about what changes they can create to make their towns the best place to be. Over the summer months, an enormous amount of activity has taken place in and around the area. People of all ages have enjoyed getting involved in a range of workshops: song writing, poetry, story writing, theatre, acting, dance and public speaking. There have also been other events such as early morning beach writing, digital and social media sessions as well as young people working with graffiti artists. Back in July at the What Change launch, almost 100 people took up a £10 Challenge to become ChangeMakers by creating a small, but significant, change in Burnham and Highbridge. Ever since, they’ve been coming up with all sorts of ideas to make a difference. You may have seen some of them around the town over the summer! We’ll find out how the ChangeMakers have spent their £10 Challenge at a celebration event called Keep the Change, on Saturday 20th September at the Princess Theatre and Arts Centre. Anyone is welcome to this fun-filled evening that will include short performances and happenings! There will also be delicious food and a bar. Tickets are £2 (under 16s free) and available from the theatre box office: 01278 784464. What Change is part of a two year initiative called Word/Play that brings together theatre, spoken word and digital media to create change. It's for people in Somerset - individuals, groups and communities - anyone, in fact, who wants their voice to be heard, to feel better about themselves or to make a difference in their lives. The project is produced by Take Art, a pioneering arts charity that serves the towns, villages and rural communities of Somerset. It is supported by the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation, Arts Council England, Literature Works, and Burnham & Highbridge Town Council. Keep an eye on the Word/Play website for more details (www.takeart.org/wordplay), and you can follow Take Art WordPlay on Facebook and Twitter (@TakeArtWordPlay). ChangeMakers and workshop participants are encouraged to share their photographs or words using the hashtag #whatchangebh via Twitter and Instagram. Photo credits: Beata Kosc Photography

Road Smart: Scheme to reduce road casualties In just one year in Avon and Somerset, 452 people were killed or seriously injured on our roads. Around one third of these were young people aged 17 to 24. To help reduce this figure we have launched a free education course for drivers, and learner drivers, in the force area. Road Smart is available for all drivers but we are especially keen to encourage young drivers to attend the session. The course has been specially created on behalf of Avon and Somerset Police. It aims to raise awareness of potential hazards on the roads and build on motorists’ existing driving knowledge and experience. • 95% of all collisions are caused by human error. • One in five new drivers will have a crash within their first six months of driving. • Road crashes are the biggest single killer of young people in the UK. Some insurance companies will offer a discount to young drivers who have completed the workshop. The course is a one-off interactive session and will be held at venues across the force area. It is based on the successful training package that is used for driver awareness courses nationally. Supt. Ian Smith said: “This is a fantastic opportunity to benefit from a free course that could be a life-saving opportunity. The training will be delivered by the TTC group, a professional road safety education provider. The national course this is based upon is widely hailed as excellent and thought-provoking and really does influence driver behaviour.” Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Mountstevens said: “I am delighted Avon and Somerset Police have designed a unique road safety package to further educate all road users, but particularly young drivers." Courses can be booked in advance, and will be running until early 2015. There are two versions - one for young drivers (aged 17 to 24), and one for other drivers. If you are, or know of, a young driver who would like to join this course, or you are aged 25 or over and interested in attending, go to www.roadsmart.org for further details.

Secret World Wildlife Rescue Much loved by the local community, Secret World Wildlife Rescue (SWWR) offers a free wildlife rescue service to anyone that finds wildlife great and small in distress. We are open 24/7 and supported by over 500 volunteers who help us to create a network of drivers that can act at a moment’s notice as an ambulance service. You might have read a story about a hedgehog we recently rescued from cricketer Marcus Trescothick's garden gate, in the local press last week. It is 25 years this year since Pauline Kidner opened her doors to wildlife at Secret World Wildlife Rescue, based out on the Somerset Levels at East Huntspill. Pauline has taken to pen and paper again and written a new book about some of the incredible and extremely rare wildlife that we get through our doors here. 'A Place of Safety' has been written in a humorous tone, with information about certain species telling the story of how Secret World has evolved from a tourist attraction to now a charity and wildlife hospital, since Pauline’s last book was published in 1998. The book has a foreword by Terry Pratchett and is endorsed on the cover by Chris Packham. There are two colour photographic sections with stories, including three otter cubs from 2007 and a Yellow-nosed Albatross - never seen in Britain before! 'A Place of Safety' is on sale from September and will cost £7.99. All the money raised will go directly to Secret World.

Quiz Night – Berrow Village Hall On Saturday 27th September at 7pm (quiz starts at 7.30pm prompt), a quiz with a £50 first prize is being organised by the Friends of Berrow Village Hall. Bar and food will be available. There is a £2 per person entry fee, with children aged 14 - 16 £1, and children under 14 free. There is a maximum of six members per team. If you cannot get your bushes to produce young wood each year, some of the old wood must be retained but should be cut back to two or three buds. Try to keep the bushes open in the centre to help the fruit ripen.

Unless you are keeping some heads for seed next year, keep removing all dead flower heads to prolong flowering, and only save the strongest seed heads. Pansies, violas, wallflowers, primroses, auriculas and polyanthus can all be planted out in the borders this month for spring decoration. Thin out old shoots and tie in new shoots of climbing roses. This is also the month to plant anemones, crocuses, montbretia, narcissi, chionodoxas, scillass, etc. but not tulips. It is best to only plant snowdrops after flowering when they are still green.

VEGETABLE GARDEN Keep down the weeds by hoeing, clear the crops as they finish, getting rid of any with disease. Dig anything else into the garden to decay. Harvest onions and potatoes when they are ready. Keep leeks well watered. Lift and store carrots in dry sand for winter use. Keep picking runner beans. If seed is allowed to develop, further growth of beans will stop.

THE FRUIT GARDEN Gooseberries can be pruned this month. Fruit is produced on one year old wood. The object of pruning is to keep the bushes as vigorous as

Positive Pester Power Eco-education at Carymoor helps pupils grasp green issues - by Nick Cater Back to school – three words of joy for parents in Burnham on Sea, and mixed emotions for their children. One great aspect of today’s schools is that the environment, from wildlife to waste, is an important aspect of learning. Somerset is lucky to have an excellent eco-education resource in the Carymoor Environmental Trust, whose backers include recycling firm Viridor. The charity is based by an old landfill site that is now reverting to grass and trees as a nature reserve that attracts birds, animals, reptiles and bugs. Children, families, schools and other groups can visit Carymoor near Castle Cary or have its enthusiastic and expert young staff visit them. Among much else to see and do, Carymoor offers schools great fun activities for assemblies, workshops and project days on all aspects of waste. The sessions cover such topics as why and how to recycle, litter, sustainability and what happens to rubbish. Working with Somerset Waste Partnership, Carymoor is also helping pupils learn about how anaerobic digestion turns food waste into power and farming bio-fertiliser. Somerset now has its own anaerobic digestion (AD) plant near Bridgwater whose ‘burping bacteria’ help transform the county’s household food waste into electricity. Burnham on Sea’s St Joseph’s Primary recently enjoyed a Carymoor outreach day after pupil Catherine Taylor, age 7, won an AD poster design contest. As they learn about green issues, children begin to understand the need to go beyond recycling, to reuse items and materials, and reduce waste and of course, once your children have understood the cost and pollution of land filling Somerset’s refuse, your family could soon find itself recycling more. With their help, you might even save some money by wasting less. Call it the positive side of pester power. If you are a parent, teacher or run a group, check out what Carymoor can offer by visiting www. carymoor.org.uk. Or get in touch by emailing education@carymoor.org.uk or calling 01963 351350. Nick Cater is Senior Communications Officer at Somerset Waste Partnership, which manages waste and recycling services on behalf of all local authorities in Somerset: www.somersetwaste.gov.uk.

Do you wear reading glasses? If like many people you use glasses for reading, this may be of interest. A company based in the USA has developed an App for both iPhone and Android claiming that after completing three 12 minute sessions per week over a period of 3 months, enables people to read text without glasses that previously required them. The App is called GlassessOff and the website for finding out more is www.glassessoff.com The company are claiming an impressive 90% success rate, so it would be interesting to know if anybody tries this and find it helps them. The last few weeks have seen a big increase in faults on the phone network due to weather damage. One particular issue that affects the broadband is having a crackling sound on the phone line. If you have this problem, I would first advise trying a different phone handset in your home’s master socket or preferably test socket (if you have one behind the faceplate of the newer style BT socket). If the problem persists, I would ring your service provider and get them to test the line. Quite often, they will say that they cannot find a problem and threaten charges if the problem is within the property, but in nearly all cases, the problems are outside the home. If you find that once the crackling is fixed but the Internet is slow, ring your Internet provider and ask them to reset the Internet connection. This procedure re-trains the Internet to work as best as possible. Another reminder about Internet scams, which seem to happen regularly. I often visit people in Burnham and Highbridge who are affected by such scams. Should anybody ring you and claim to work for Microsoft or similar, please be very wary of what they are saying as often they want to remote control your computer and then hit you with a large bill for essentially doing nothing of any use. Please remind elderly friends and family, as this group tends to be more trusting when the phone rings and also to be wary of e-mails asking for money. Music be the Food of Life, Play On! As a very powerful art form, music stirs the human spirit. Nobody knows how or why, but no other animal seems to enjoy music at a conscious level or makes music for sheer pleasure. It also happens to be good for your general health and wellbeing. So why not come and join The Burnham and Highbridge Choral Society on Thursday evenings during September – May, at 7.30pm in the Methodist Church Hall, College Street, Burnham on Sea TA8 1AS. We are a friendly group of people, who enjoy singing various types of choral music which, as our repertoire grows, includes some more modern pieces. This season we will be attending various local events including the Co-operative Funeralcare Memorial concert in Weston. We're a mixed choir, so men and women are welcome; there are no auditions. The first three weeks are free, so there is no pressure to make a decision on the first night. The new season starts on Thursday 4th September at 7.30pm. We look forward to meeting new people who enjoy singing as much as we do. You will be made very welcome. The programme for Christmas will consist of a variety of music from Britten, Gritton, Lauridsen, Rutter, San Saens, Vivaldi and Warlock. We are also holding a Sing Day on Saturday 18th October. It will be an opportunity to learn something new, in a relaxed and fun setting - Hiawatha’s Wedding Feast which at one time vied with Messiah & Elijah as one of Britain's most popular choral compositions. More information about this day will appear next month. For more information on any of the items mentioned contact Bev Hearn on 01934 732041 or email jane. lee36@btinternet.com. You can visit our Facebook page where you will also find some video clips of our past concerts. www.facebook.com/BurnhamAndHighbridgeChoralSociety (you do not have to have an account on Facebook to do this).

Summer Walking with Sedgemoor Ramblers The new autumn programme will have started in August and is available on our website: www. sedgemoorramblers.co.uk. Our walk leaders arranged some lovely walks for us over the summer and we have been pleased to welcome a number of new members. The short evening walks, followed by a pub meal, have been very popular this year, and many of the walkers are looking forward to trying the longer Sunday walks in the coming months. The Saturday afternoon, leisurely walks will continue during the winter. At the beginning of July, we enjoyed a day out walking along the coast in the beautiful Ilfracombe area with a choice of three lengths of walk, and other walks have taken us to some interesting areas including Exmoor and the Mendip Hills. We are looking forward to other social events that have been arranged, as well as walking holidays being planned for next year. Sedgemoor Ramblers is a group within Ramblers. New walkers are always welcome and are invited to walk a few times with the group before becoming a member. Maybe you have never thought of walking with a group, but if you are interested in walking with a friendly and sociable group of people and share our love of the outdoors, have a look at our website or pick up a programme from your local Tourist Information Office. Our Membership Secretary Esmé can also send you a programme and answer any queries - ring 01278 784190.

Civil Service Retirement Fellowship A meeting of the C.S.R.F. will be held on Tuesday 23rd September at 10.30am at the Apex Park. All ex-Civil Servants are invited to the monthly meetings, normally held on the fourth Tuesday each month, except August and December. At July's meeting a flower quiz was held. The member with the most correct answers was Dr. Maurice Nicholls. Best wishes were sent to Beth Bray and Ron Read who were not well enough to attend. Thanks were recorded to Dorothy and Gordon Smith for the welcoming garden party held in their garden in June.

Somerset Rebels Speedway Speedway riders are the modern-day gladiators of the sporting world, 4 riders per race going head to head on 500cc motorbikes over 4 laps of the shale-based oval track, the bikes accelerating from 0-60mph in just 3 seconds, faster than an F1 racing car, but have no gears and NO BRAKES! The Somerset Rebels are one of a number of speedway clubs that operate in the UK from Plymouth in the south to Edinburgh in the north, their Oaktree Arena track being situated just off junction 22 on the M5, they race their home matches most Friday nights throughout the speedway season that operates from mid-March until the end of October. Formed in just 2000, the Somerset Rebels currently operate in the sport’s Premier League, which is the 2nd tier of racing in the UK, their Oaktree Arena track, which is 300 metres in length, is widely acknowledged to be one of the best speedway tracks in the UK, a fact borne out by the fact that Sky Sports are annual visitors to the track in order to broadcast one of the Rebels home matches, and will, once again, be bringing their cameras to the Oaktree Arena on Tuesday 11th June. A speedway meeting comprises 15 heats of pulsating action of what must be one of the most extreme spectator sports in the UK, but it is also one that appeals to fans of all ages, from 1-91! Somerset meetings get underway at 7.30pm, but from when the gates open at 5.30pm until 7pm fans can enter the pits where you can watch the riders prepare their bikes, take photos and also have a chat to the riders – what other sport can you get ‘up close and personal’ with the main people. Kids can also apply to be meeting mascots or hold birthday parties in the Oaktree Clubhouse adjacent to the track. Looking for a team bonding night out or something different to treat your staff then have a look at the Rebels website to see our offers and discounts or just simply email us. So why not give it a try, we know that you won’t be disappointed……… www.somersetrebels.co.uk

Good Report from Ofsted Somerset Skills & Learning are celebrating a good report from their Ofsted inspection last month. The Ofsted inspectors travelled the county looking at the adult education provision Somerset Skills and Learning, from pottery classes in Frome to Childcare Apprenticeships in Chard, and from English classes in Burnham to Watercolour classes in Wellington. The findings are out, and the results are good. Establishments are graded either 1 (Outstanding), 2 (Good), 3 (Requires Improvement) or 4 (Poor), and Somerset Skills & Learning came out with a great overall grade of 2, so they are officially Good! Ofsted were particularly impressed with how ‘the curriculum and learning programmes meet the needs of the learners, employers and the wider community’, and how ‘most learners make good progress, develop knowledge and skills which enable them to progress successfully and make a positive contribution to the community and in the workforce’. This accolade backs up the success Somerset Skills & Learning recently had in the Adult Learning Week Awards, where two of their learners won awards in recognition of how participating in adult education has had a positive impact on their lives. Also mentioned as a strength, was how well tutors plan lessons to address the individual needs of learners, and how ‘Staff provide particularly good initial advice and guidance to learners, and support those who experience difficulties in learning’. Marketing Manager Ade Bowen told us: “We believe we play an important part in the lives of people who live in Somerset. It could be by providing them with a regular opportunity to get out, meet people with a similar interest and explore their interests. It might be to help people improve their career prospects. It could be by giving people the first step on the employment ladder. We feel we do a good job at helping and supporting Somerset residents achieve their potential, and it is great that Ofsted agree.” Would you like to find out more? The new Adult Learning Guide is available online at www.learnsomerset.co.uk or one can be posted for free if you request one by calling 0845 688 0488. Burnham and Highbridge Band After much enjoyed performances in their Burnham on Sea Princess Hall season of summer concerts, the Burnham and Highbridge Band is busy in preparation for the next in the series, which takes place on Sunday 28th September at 7.45pm. Tickets may be purchased on the evening from the bar or in advance through the Princess box-office. At our exit polls, audience members have remarked that this is now a much more exciting band, whose selection of music and quality of performance gets better with each outing. Band secretary Ken Henton said: “This is due to a growing commitment from members not only to rehearse well but also to apply an analytical approach to their playing which identifies where musicality can be improved. We are grateful for the efforts of David Fisher our Musical Director who demands hard work from the band but who is obtaining results, which, a couple of years ago, we could only dream of. At the price of £6 (£5 for concessions), it has to be excellent value for an evening out.”

Give us a Try! The Burnham U3A continues to offer over 50 different activities led by their own members. The groups we offer are diverse, with arts and crafts, table tennis groups, barn dancing, strollers and walkers, languages, book clubs, games, theatre and travel to name but a few. Recently we have seen the Ukulele Group established, thus expanding the ability for musical participation alongside the already thriving ‘Singing for Pleasure’ and ‘Concert Party’. Forthcoming events planned for the autumn and winter will include an Open Day, where leaders will be available to discuss their specific group, a French evening, the Christmas meal at Batch farm, and our annual Christmas service followed by mince pies and teas at the Community Centre. If all this appeals to you, then why not come along to our coffee morning on a Thursday morning between 10am and 11am? We will be there to meet you and hopefully help you to benefit from the atmosphere of fun and enjoyment that our U3A has to offer.

Two Green Flags for Sedgemoor Two of Sedgemoor’s parks are amongst the very best in the UK – and that’s official! Marine Cove Gardens, on Burnham on Sea’s esplanade has received the Green Flag Award for the third year running, with Apex Park in Highbridge receiving it for the eighth year in a row. Nationally, 1476 parks and green spaces have received a prestigious Green Flag Award in 2014. The award, handed out by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy, recognises and rewards the best parks and green spaces across the country. A Green Flag flying overhead is a sign to the public that the space boasts the highest possible standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent facilities. Councillor Peter Downing, Chairman of Sedgemoor District Council said: “It is with thanks to Sedgemoor’s Parks, Clean Surroundings and Dog Warden staff, as well as the incredible support from the Friends of Marine Cove Gardens and Friends of Apex Park Improvements Group, that both parks are in tip-top condition for their wide range of visitors. Sedgemoor District Council is very proud to have once again been recognised in two separate locations for Green Flag awards. Marine Cove was inspected for the award only a few months after a serious vandalism incident so it just goes to show the hard work Sedgemoor staff and The Friends of Marine Cove put into the Gardens. Well done to everyone involved.” Keep Britain Tidy’s Green Flag Award scheme manager Paul Todd said: “We are delighted to announce yet another record-breaking year for Green Flag Award parks and green spaces. A Green Flag Award provides national recognition for all the parks’ managers, staff and volunteers who, through their dedication and hard work, have helped to create these fantastic places for everyone to enjoy. Quality green spaces are a vital resource for communities and that is why it is so significant that we have given out more awards than ever before.”
