From the editor
Welcome to the April edition of LocalReach. This month will see the date nearing for this spring’s Food Festival, activities taking place with the Sedgemoor Ramblers, and the bowls clubs. Yarn Over still has an active group meeting at the Coffee Lounge at the Princess Theatre and Arts Centre on a Wednesday from 7pm for crafters in the area. With a busy fortnight revolving around the Highbridge Festival of Arts – celebrating so much local talent, in particular from the younger members of the community. Being a participant this year has however highlighted how difficult it is to perform publically, on an instrument I am learning – the younger members in our community dealt with this superbly. I would encourage others to take part next year if maybe you had not thought about it before. It is a challenge and takes you out of your comfort zone! Don't forget that at every farmers’ market there is a community table that can be used to promote all community events. At the March market come and say hello to your community editor of LocalReach - Jacqui Strong. I will be assisting Gaynor Brown during the morning from 8am until 1pm. Bring along any promotional material for future events in the community that need publicity. You can also let me have contact details if you are interested in either the free coverage or paid advertisements in LocalReach. We are interested in helping you promote your events; contact me at jacqui@ localreach.co.uk for more details. Enjoy this month’s edition and please don’t forget to send your editorial in to me in good time for the next edition of LocalReach. Editorial deadline for May issue is Monday 13th April. Jacqui Strong, LocalReach Community Editor, jacqui@localreach.co.uk

West Huntspill Players The next production is well underway for the West Huntspill Players, under the careful direction of David Jenkins. The comedy farce that has been chosen is Heatstroke, by the popular writer Eric Chappell. It is set in a holiday villa in Spain, but when it is realised that the villa has been double booked, this in itself causes confusion but to add to this, the visitors have the same holdall, which only compounds the confusion. With assumed identities, breakneck pace and hilarious mishaps of farce mixed and the tension, mystery and startling plot reversals of a thriller, this is a clever and amusing play from the author of TV’s Rising Damp. The play will be performed at the Balliol Hall in West Huntspill starting on Wednesday 22nd April running to Saturday 25th April. The tickets can be purchased from Mary Parish on 01278 785651. This has the makings of a very good play, so don’t leave it too late to secure your tickets. For more information about how to get involved with this popular drama club, contact committee member Jacqui Strong on 01278 780997.
Colour and Moods of Somerset Burnham artist Rod Downing will be holding an exhibition of his paintings 'Colours and Moods of Somerset' in The Arts Lounge at The Princess Theatre, Burnham-on-Sea from 25th May to 13th June. As you would expect from the title, the aim is to capture the wonderful light and atmosphere of the Somerset countryside, and the exhibition will include paintings of Burnham, the Quantock Hills, and of course the amazing Somerset Levels. We hope you enjoy it. If you would like to have a preview of his work, please go to www.roddowning.wix.com/rod-downing.

A Time to Contemplate I’d like to be as clever as Stephen Fry. But is he wise as well as clever? They aren’t the same thing. Fry made headlines after an interview on Irish Television. In that interview he described God as, “utterly evil, capricious, mean-minded, stupid, monstrous”. His argument is that God created terrible diseases and is responsible for the suffering that we see around us. If that was true he might well have a point. But that’s not the God I believe in. The Bible tells us that God created a perfect world but it got fouled up and broken once we got our hands on it. We started to run it how we thought best and stopped listening to and following our maker’s instructions. The God that Stephen Fry is rejecting is not the Christian God that the churches worship. Fry’s conclusion is that, “The moment you banish him, your life becomes simpler, purer, cleaner, more worth living, in my opinion.” The Bible tells us that we’re in this mess because we banished him. The interviewer followed up with the question ‘Who or what was Jesus?’ Stephen replied, “I think he was a very good soul, he was an inspiration as a teacher. I do think that a lot of things he says are actually nonsense, when you examine them they seem beautiful but like the Dalai Lama they are actually twee and completely impractical and an insult to the human spirit.” If there is a God, then rejecting him isn’t wise – it’s quite a risk to cut him out of our worldview when there is a chance we might be wrong. It’s even less wise to recreate what God is like and then rail against him. I think we’re on dangerous ground once we think we know better than Jesus. But those of us who are his followers shouldn’t be too quick to judge. When we read Jesus’ words and ignore them because they are difficult or inconvenient we effectively do the same thing. Steve Ayers, Burnham-on-Sea Baptist Church

Burnham-on-Sea Farmers’ Market Sean and Catherine of Taylors Traditional Bakers Probably the hardest pitch to miss at Burnham Farmers’ Market is the bread stall piled high with goodies from Taylors Traditional Bakers. Taylors was established way back in 1945 in the small village of South Brewham, just outside Bruton. The bakery is now run by Sean and Catherine Taylor who are the third generation of the Taylor family to own the bakery. This year the bakery celebrates its 70th birthday and there will be various celebrations throughout the summer. The Taylors team are working very hard to develop a birthday speciality loaf, so.... watch this space! The bakery moved to Bruton in 2007 and is managed by Sean and his team of experienced craft bakers. The breads are still handmade in the traditional way, and Taylors produce not only the more familiar white, wholemeal and malted wheat loaves and rolls, but also a range of French and speciality breads including campaillou, sourdough, donker (Bavarian fruit and nut bread), rye and multi-seed breads. Hot cross buns are, of course, flying off the stall at the moment. With all the demands on their time, it’s rare to find either Catherine or Sean at the markets, but one of their team is always there. Most Burnham customers will know Colin and Neil who always remember who bought what, not only at the last market but also at the ones before. Come and talk to the Taylor’s sales people - they’re experts on all things about breads, cakes and morning goods.

Gardening Jobs for APRIL Weather permitting we should be really on the go now! Indoor seeds should be growing well and they need watering and looking after. You can take them outside on mild days but they will need bringing in at night. It should be time to start some outdoor sowing; lots of vegetables can be sown outside so read the seed packet info. Potatoes can be planted, but remember they are a hungry crop. If a late frost is forecast, cover up the new shoots with soil or protect them with fleece. Sow outdoor tomatoes for planting out next month. Towards the end of the month tender seeds such as French and runner beans and squash. Marrows and courgettes can be sown, but remember these might need protection outdoors even in mid May. Feed shrubs and roses with a good general fertilizer
- one handful per plant is a good guide. Plant summer flowering bulbs and add a handful of sharp sand or grit underneath the bulb to assist drainage. By all means pot up hanging baskets but they will still need inside protection. Prune lavender and penstemons just above fresh, new shoots. Put your supports in place for perennials before they grow too large. Deadhead, and foliar feed with a high potash fertilizer spring bulbs weekly, for at least six weeks to help them produce good flowers next year. Mow lawns with the blades high to start with. Consider weed and feed treatments if the weather allows, if not wait until next month. It's the start of hoe hoe hoe season so keep on top of weeds!!.
For more tips, why not join your local gardening group? The Burnham and District Horticultural Society meet at 7.30pm on the third Monday of each month (except December) at the Community Centre, Berrow Road. The next meeting is on Monday 20th April, with a talk from Neil Lovesey - ‘Herbs – not just stuffing balls’. All welcome. Members of the Society free; visitors £1.50.
A Concert of Music Spanning the Centuries The Burnham & Highbridge Choral Society's Spring Concert will be celebrating the 700th anniversary of St. Andrew's Church by performing music that spans the centuries. It will include great composers such as William Bryd (1540-1623), Henry Purcell (1659-1695), to our modern greats Karl Jenkins (1944) and Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber (1948). The concert will take place on Saturday 25th April at 7.30pm at St. Andrew's Church, Burnham-on-Sea. Tickets will be available from Material Needs, High Street, Burnham-on-Sea (cash only please), choir members, and at the door. Come and enjoy this celebration of great music.
Cheddar Male Choir Annual Concert Once a year, Cheddar Male Choir celebrates a year’s work for charities and good causes by putting on their Annual Concert. This year’s concert, being in the 20th year of formation, is being held in St. Andrews Church in Cheddar. The concert will help to raise funds to keep the choir carrying on raising money. Cheddar Male Choir helps others raise money by singing around 12 concerts per year, and they have assisted charities such as The Children’s Hospice South West, Somerset and Dorset Air Ambulance, Freewheelers Blood Bikers, Draycott Defibrillator, and numerous others. This year they will be joined by the local U3A Ladies Choir and will perform together one number that no doubt will be known by many. Their 20th annual concert being held on 25th April at 7.30pm will be a great celebration of songs from the musicals, pop charts, and some traditional male voice songs. 8

The Walled Gardens of Cannington The Walled Gardens are situated in the village of Cannington and lie within the grounds of a medieval priory. The buildings and gardens have a long history and have always played an important part in the life of the local community. They are open daily 10am – 4pm, for the high season, until October. Easter Weekend will see the Gardens full of the colours of spring, with activities for the children, and maybe a chocolate egg or two! Children under 16 get in free and have the opportunity to complete a ‘Go on an Adventure’ activity sheet. Throughout the year, the Gardens hold various other events including the Festival of Wildlife, Summer Fair, Teddy Bears’ Picnic, Halloween activities as well as outdoor theatre performances of Pride and Prejudice, The Wind in the Willows, Hamlet and Much Ado About Nothing. Having undergone extensive redevelopment, the Gardens have been accredited as a ‘quality assured visitor attraction' by VisitEngland. They are also a Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) recommended garden and provide a superb facility for students at Bridgwater College’s Cannington Centre. The Gardens have classic and contemporary features such as; the 'hot' herbaceous border; the blue garden; a sub-tropical walk; and a Victorian style fernery, amongst others. There is also a botanical glasshouse where arid, sub-tropical and tropical plants can be seen and two smaller gardens within the walls (The Bishop's and Australasian Gardens) are areas of real tranquillity. There is also a recognised by Plant Heritage National Plant Collection. The collection showcases Monarda, Santotolina and Deschampsia, providing year-round interest, with stepping stones inter-planted with thyme, chamomile and Corsican mint, which release their scent when trodden on, encouraging children to explore the Gardens and wander off the pathways. Wildlife and sustainable practices are an important factor in how the Gardens operate. Many improvements have been made to make the Gardens more eco-friendly, and in turn support wildlife. Peat free compost is used for plants; the Gardens are watered from a bore hole, and bedding plants are grown in bio-degradable pots, which allows them to be planted straight into the ground. The Gardens are hoping to create a hedgehog colony, taking in displaced hedgehogs from the local animal charity Secret World Wildlife Rescue. The Gardens offer a perfect habitat for hedgehogs as there are plenty of grubs, beetles and insects for them to eat, and there is cover for hibernation. The charming Gardens are dog-friendly and can be accessed with wheelchairs and mobility scooters. Visitors can treat themselves in the Tea Room, Plant Sales and Gift Shop - which you don't need access to the Gardens to visit - so there's plenty to see and do for all the family! www.canningtonwalledgardens.co.uk

What’s with all the food waste excuses? Put it all in: the anaerobic digestion plant turns everything uneaten into electricity By Nick Cater Why is waste food such a big issue, and why is a project reminding people in Burnham-on-Sea to keep it out of their rubbish bin? Ask how much waste food people produce and many assert “just a scrap”, “we throw nothing away”, or even – like a homework excuse – “the dog eats it all”. Dig deeper, look in people’s bins, and reality is more complicated. Research shows that everyone produces waste food; single people the most as a percentage of what they consume, and families with children the most overall, wasting food worth an average of £60 a month. It gets worse. Instead of Somerset’s anaerobic digestion plant at Walpole recycling it all into electricity, half our food waste ends up in our rubbish bins. Landfill sites groan – and belch polluting methane – with thousands of tonnes of our decaying food, as do our council tax bills with £6 million spent this year landfilling food and other recyclables. Why do we not recycle all waste food? My take is that it is a mix of the “yuk” factor, shame about waste, missing containers (easily ordered online – see below), busy lives, uncertainty about what can be recycled – answer: all foods, from mouldy bread to raw meat, plate scrapings to bones – and kitchen caddy liner costs. Recent trials in Somerset suggested that a firm personal reminder helps raise food recycling rates. So in the new project, all homes in Burnham – and many more across half of Somerset – now have free liners, a simple food waste guide and a very clear message in large red letters stuck on their rubbish bin: “No food waste please; remember to use your food recycling bin.” If it makes a difference – let’s hope so, for our planet and wallets – Burnham’s success could see the project roll out to every home in Somerset. For more on food waste and to order containers, contact Sedgemoor District Council customer services on 0845 4082543 or customer.services@sedgemoor.gov.uk, or visit www.somersetwaste.gov.uk. Nick Cater is Senior Communications Officer at Somerset Waste Partnership, which manages waste and recycling services on behalf of all local authorities in Somerset.

What influenced you to like Classical Music? This was a question discussed at a recent meeting of the U3A Music Appreciation Group led by Rod Winfield. The format of meetings has been that a member presents an interesting programme of classical music to his/her fellow members, after which very brief comments about each piece may be made. The group has not been going that long, so it was thought that it would be a good idea to get to know more about each other by understanding how each came to like classical music, particularly in this present age of celebrity pop. One member first came in contact with classical music as part of his music curriculum at school. Having a rather unremarkable start he began to think that he ought to know much more about the subject although even now, he does not feel compelled to listen all the time. Another started by having piano lessons which prompted greater interest. She took to listening to music on the radio and became a music student in London. The contributions that were made were interesting and seemed to range from a passing interest to a passionate love right from the start. It also revealed that some members confessed to liking other genres of music as well. In future meetings we hope to discuss our preferred composers and compositions. If any of these experiences chime with you, come and join us!
Burnham & Highbridge Youth Council trip to Westminster Abbey Burnham & Highbridge Youth Council were invited to attend the Commonwealth Day Observance Service on 9th March at Westminster Abbey in London. This was a once in a lifetime opportunity for the youth council, and recognised the hard work, dedication and contribution that they have made locally over the last year. This year the theme was ‘A Young Commonwealth’, in which youth and community groups from around the Commonwealth were given recognition for the contribution and potential that young people bring to society. Councillor Kate Lawson, Somerset Rural Youth Project’s Steve Baker and volunteer Jonathan Smith, accompanied a group of five young people from the Youth Council to the event. The Queen delivered a speech and other senior royals were in attendance. After the service the group visited the M & M store in Leicester Square!

Introducing Which Trusted Traders For a long while, it has concerned me that the consumer never knows exactly who to trust when it comes to having work done by a small business. Recommendation of course goes a long way, but what happens if you need somebody to visit your house to repair something, but you are not sure who you can rely on. Fortunately there is now Which Trusted Traders – part of the consumer magazine “Which”. Which has been reviewing products and services for many years and recently have started the “Trusted Traders” scheme. To obtain Trusted Trader status, a company must complete a stringent assessment including a visit from a trading standards officer and also a random selection of customers complete a telephone interview on how to company has performed. I am pleased to announce that in March 2015 Computer Problem Solutions Ltd obtained Which Trusted Trader status. For more information please see here: http://trustedtraders.which.co.uk/ I would recommend anybody that runs their own small business to look for accreditation with Which, and anybody that is looking for anybody to work at their home consult the Which directory to see if traders are accredited to Which. On another matter, we have recently visited a lot of people with slow and troublesome broadband. As well as fixing all sorts of computers problems, we specialise in getting broadband to run at the best possible, so should you have any problems and would like our help, please call me on 01278 787846 or 07973 536299. The Friends of Burnham-on-Sea War Memorial Hospital Have you or a relative or friend ever been at patient in our local hospital? Or used its outpatient facilities? The Friends of Burnham Hospital have raised from events, donations and legacies, nearly £2,000,000. This has been spent on a variety of equipment, as well as the fabric of the hospital. Some of the major projects include the building of the conservatory, the purchase and refurbishment of the Peter Holmes Annexe, and the provision of a state-of-the-art Opthalmic Suite. The hospital is equipped with the most modern and up-to-date electronic beds and mattresses, and an extensive refurbishment took place 2009/10 using £310,000 from money held by the Friends’money and £400,000 from the Trust. The project involved the Friends working closely with the PCT to improve patient privacy, dignity, security, and infection control. In addition, the Friends have paid for many items, including patient dining room furniture and awnings above ward windows. Newspapers and maintenance of the gardens are paid for on a regular basis. In the current economic environment we are keen to increase our membership to show that local people value their local hospital. By joining The Friends you are contributing to the future of your hospital in the community. Fund raising events are organised and run on a strictly voluntary basis, so there is no compulsion for any member to become actively involved in these. Please join us and encourage your friends to do the same for a subscription of £5 a year, payable annually by standing order. Alternatively you may simply wish to make a one-off donation. For more information about the Friends and how to contact us, please see our website www.friendsofburnhamhospital.org, or contact our Secretary, Eileen Shaw on 01278 780733 or 07793 556876.

“A sad tale’s best for winter” So runs the line in Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale that gives the play its title. There are many sad tales around the world; indeed that word ‘sad’ is an understatement. Turmoil in Israel/Palestine feels like a permanent fixture, which perhaps anaesthetises us from appreciating the scale of day-to-day human pain which many there suffer. Meanwhile the demonic atrocities of ISIS and their African cousins Boko Haram horrify us, there is growing tension between Western Europe and Russia, and there’s conflict and oppression even in the paradise of the Maldives. And those are just a few things from one day’s newspapers; there’s an awful lot more we don’t know about because it’s not deemed to be news. Into all these winter tales bursts the Christian season of Easter, all too easily these days trivialised into being about eggs and daffodils and bunny rabbits. But Easter is awesome – from the god who on Good Friday chose to tolerate all that perverted humanity could inflict, to the man who on Easter Day revealed that death is a gateway to life and love - while it may appear defeated, is never overcome. For resurrection is part of the natural order of things. People love this season because all around new life is coming into being. In our own lives God invites us to look for the green shoots of new life in all the bleak and deathly situations that confront us. The world goes on in its dismal way. We remember politicians and statesmen in our prayers because their jobs become more difficult and their need of grace and wisdom more acute as time goes on, and because what they do affects us and our fellow human beings, sometimes very starkly. And we also recognise that the forces they deploy – not only military but economic and propagandist as well – can be terrifying for those on the wrong end of them. With all best wishes, Revd John James, Interim Minister, Burnham-on-Sea Methodist Church
Mozaics of Ravenna Members of the North Somerset Decorative and Fine Arts Society (NSDFAS) were given a most interesting lecture at the March meeting. Jane Angelini explained how Ravenna became the last capital of the Western Roman Empire after the fall of Rome from 402 AD, and continued until the end of the Roman Empire in 476, and then of Byzantine Italy until the 8th century. It was important as it was close to the Adriatic in those days, closer than it is now as it is 13 kilometres from the coast due to the marshes building up, and was a prosperous trading place with eastern parts. The prosperity of Ravenna was important as it was an expensive art form, and it was here that the technique was first created. It used small cubes of coloured glass pushed into wet plaster on walls and ceilings. Up until then mosaics had been only on floors using tesserae of coloured stones. Vast amounts of these glass tesserae were produced like pizzas in ovens and cut up into cubes. It was a non-plastic medium so the artisans had to rely on the gradation of colours and the angle the cubes were set into the plaster. The affect varies on the time of day and with the seasons. On closer inspection it can be seen overall colours were obtained by using several shades of tiles to give a particular affect when viewed from a distance, as many of the mosaics were high up on walls and ceilings. Many have a very opulent feeling, as much gold was used. Our next two meetings are at ‘37 club’ Puriton (Old ROF) on Wednesday 1st April at 2.15pm – ‘A Pot of Paint in the Public’s Face’ by Lizzie Darbyshire, on the Ruskin-Whistler dispute following Ruskin’s review of the Whistler 1877 exhibition, resulting in the court case and the longer legacy of the action. And on Wednesday 6th May at 7pm, ‘Music, Masonry and Manuscripts’ by Mark Cottle, on the music, architecture and manuscript illuminations of medieval England, which are among the greatest achievements of period in cultural history.
BOS Events BOS Events have been given a grant by the Town Council to organise a Marshalling Course. It is open for any group to put forward candidates, or for individuals who would like to volunteer to help by marshalling at town events throughout the year. Carnival obviously has the largest requirement for marshals, but volunteers are needed for the Hospital Fete, The Park Run, The Medieval Tournament, Youth Day and others. The course will be held at the Royal British Legion HQ in Victoria Street from 10am-5pm on Sunday 12th April. Lunch is provided and candidates will receive a certificate from an accredited training company to prove they have taken part. The cost is £10 per person. To book a place, email info@bosevents.org.uk or call Gaynor on 01278 238714. The BOS Events stall at the Farmers’ Market on Friday 27th March will be concentrating on recruiting volunteers - come and sign up! 19 Advertising & Leaflet delivery call LocalReach on 01278 238000.

Spring into Easter at Marine Cove Marine Cove Gardens will once again be hosting a family Easter celebration, and best of all, the event is free to attend. Visit the gardens between 10am and 12pm on Easter Saturday (4th April) for free craft and fun activities for all the family. The usually peaceful gardens on Burnham’s Esplanade, next to the leaning tower of St. Andrew’s Church, will be alive with activity, including an Easter egg hunt with prizes awarded along the way to keep everyone entertained. In case of wet weather we have gazebos on stand-by. Alongside this event, local children are being asked to take part in a colouring competition to draw and colour a picture of Marine Cove and bring their entries along to the event. A winner in each age category (5 and under, 6-11, and 12 and over) will be chosen the week after the event and awarded a prize. A Sedgemoor spokesman said, “All local schools have been contacted about the competition, so we are hoping for some great entries.” Why not pay the gardens a visit before Easter to get an idea of what you can draw in the gardens: our cherub, sundial, the pond or some of the lovely flowers perhaps? We look forward to seeing lots of families at the Easter event. If you prefer something more green-fingered, we have a second event on Easter Saturday with the monthly gardening session taking place. If you are interested in gardening, want to find out more about the gardens’ history or joining the Friends of Marine Cove, then come along between 12pm and 2pm. If you would like more information on these events, please contact Jacqui Strong, Community Gardener via community.services@sedgemoor.gov.uk or call 01278 436420. You can also find out more by visiting www.sedgemoor.gov.uk or www.marinecove.org.uk, alternatively follow Sedgemoor on Twitter via @SedgemoorDC.

Weekend Photography Courses with Somerset Wildlife Trust Somerset Wildlife Trust is running 2 new weekend photography courses that explore the wildlife and landscapes of the Avalon Marshes and Mendip Hills, taking in some of the Trust’s finest nature reserves. ‘Beginning Wildlife Photography’ will run in April and June, followed by ‘Next Steps in Wildlife Photography’ in May and August. Both courses will be led by Trustee Tim Saunders and are based on a popular course that has been offered by David Plummer Photography through other Wildlife Trusts for over 5 years. Tim says, “My philosophy is simple – the wildlife comes first. To get a great image, while minimising the disturbance to nature, requires great skill, knowledge and patience. If you can bring the patience, I believe that, together, we can develop the skill and knowledge you need to create some truly stunning wildlife images. If you want a point, shoot and move-on experience, I regret that this is not for you!” ‘Beginning Wildlife Photography’ is designed for novices and those who want a better understanding of how to use their equipment, taking place on 11th and 12th April, and 20th and 21st June. ‘Next Steps in Wildlife Photography’ is designed for those who have attended the previous course and want to develop their competence and confidence as nature photographers, taking place on 16th & 17th May and 8th and 9th August. Both courses include a blend of classroom and practical sessions, and are aimed at DSLR owners. The courses cost £150 each, which includes a year’s individual membership of Somerset Wildlife Trust. Attendees who are already Trust members will receive a discount of £35 off the cost of the course. Places are limited to 16 people per course. If you have been following the history of the WI, here are some quotes: “You are a very powerful force for good in our country... from domestic violence to women's pay; from venereal disease in the 1920s to AIDS in the 1980s. That is a great tribute to the depth of your compassion, your fearlessness in tackling hard issues and the energy with which you further the cause of not just women but British society.” The Rt. Hon. Tony Blair MP, June 2000 “Since its beginnings the WI has been renowned for its vigorous campaigning. You have been ahead of the time on a whole host of issues including equal pay, breast cancer screening and banning smoking in public places…you have a formidable reputation for standing your ground and showing just what can be achieved when people come together to get things done.” The Rt. Hon. Theresa May MP, July 2014 “The WI has a membership of a size which if it were a political party would make it at least the second largest in the land. I think what you have done right is retain certain traditional values but move on to address more modern, topical, gritty and at times very challenging social issues which need to be discussed but are not easy to talk about. It is only by changing and taking on new territory that you have such a place in modern Britain.” Mr Speaker, WI AGM, 2 June 2010.

To attend this course for free you must be over 19, live in Somerset and not have received previous funding from SS&L. Please call 07585 906166 to reserve a place or email revolutiontrainings@hotmail.com.
The Windows Carers Group This is a support group for carers who look after family members with mental health problems. The Windows Carers group would like to take this opportunity of thanking the following organisations for their donations to our group in 2014, enabling our members to enjoy the benefits of a day trip to Brixham with Bakers Dolphin, a Christmas meal at the Red Cow Inn, Brent Knoll, and a large donation to cover the room rental at the Bay Centre where we meet every Tuesday Evening. Sincere thanks to Sedgemoor District Council, Leonard Laity Stoate Charitable Trust & Highbridge Community Development. On a trial basis we have decided to run a group meeting each week in April on a Tuesday afternoon from 2pm - 4pm, in the hope that more carers are able to attend, rather than at night. This will be open on the following dates only at The Bay Centre, Cassis Close, Burnham-on-Sea, TA8 1NN: Tuesday 7th, 14th, 21st, 28th April, 2pm - 4pm. For further information please contact Tony Monaghan on 07502126666.
Mount Kilimanjaro – Dig Deep A quiz has been organised for Friday 17th April, 8.30pm at the Ritz in Burnham-on-Sea. Please join us there for fun and prizes to support the fundraising by Alice Wright who is a university student that will climb Mount Kilimanjaro next August to raise money for Dig Deep. This charity helps Kenyan communities, living in poverty, to access water and sanitation. As well as building many taps and toilets, they also provide training to teach the communities of the connection between poor hygiene and lifethreatening diseases. They are unique in the way they work, as their approach means they can build strong, lasting relationships with the communities - where both parties are constantly learning from each other, to make a real impact. Alice will be covering the costs of the trip for herself (£1500), but would love to raise as much money as possible for this fantastic charity. If you would like to donate towards this great cause, then please see her fundraising page https://mydonate.bt.com/fundraisers/alicewright1.
