Welcome and with several events that have formed part of the community for a number of years, especially the hospital fete on Bank Holiday Monday. I have many memories of the fete as a child – with the bottle stall always being a favourite with visitors! Folk Fest and the Apex Fun Day are newer arrivals on our social calendar, both attracting large numbers of visitors to the town; a huge amount of thanks should be given to the organisers of these events and the time given, in many cases voluntarily. Make sure you take a moment to visit St. Andrew’s Church and tread the knitted labyrinth in the grounds – laid out as part of the 700 years celebration – this was something I became involved in and whilst never having created a labyrinth it was great fun to do! If you would like to promote your events in LocalReach, please let us have your editorial in good time. Enjoy!Editorial deadline for August issue is Friday 12th August. St. Andrew’s Church – Labyrinth The Labyrinth at St. Andrew’s Church is a temporary structure of knitted paths, made by members of the Burnham community and beyond. Its purpose is to mark the 700th anniversary of St. Andrew’s Church, to recollect previous generations, communities and forms of worship, and to gift the community of Burnham-on-Sea and beyond with an expression of love and spirituality that is accessible to all. The Labyrinth, a simple form, is a pattern with a purpose, a chance to take some time out from our busy lives, to leave schedules and stress behind as you walk the path. The Labyrinth is different from a maze which has dead ends; the labyrinth path always leads to the centre and back. As reaching the centre is assured, walking the Labyrinth is more about the journey than the destination, about being rather than doing. Owing to it being so personal, it is a spiritual practice that can be enjoyed by everyone of any age. The Labyrinth is a metaphor, the many turns reflecting our journey of life, involving changes of direction, transition, uncertainty, discovery and achievement. Every step however circuitous, however many turns, however distant it seems, takes us closer to the centre and true meaning of life. Labyrinths are found in many cultures dating back as much as 3500 years. In the Middle Ages when St. Andrew’s was first built, people who could not afford either the resources or the time to go on pilgrimage, may have walked the Labyrinth instead, maybe as a form of mini pilgrimage. As you walk, you may wish to address a specific intention, issue or concern. You may wish to pray for the world, or those you know of who are in need. You may wish to meditate on a specific word, phrase, prayer or scripture verse. Finally, walking the Labyrinth can be great fun, especially with children. It can remind us of the pleasure of exploration, the adventure of discovering new paths, and the joy of homecoming. In a way, walking the Labyrinth can be a form of celebration and joy, giving thanks for the spiritual life of Burnham-on-Sea in ages past, rejoicing in the vibrancy of life now and trusting in faith for the generations yet to come.

Sedgemoor Playday Since 2001 a playday has run in conjunction with the National Playday, and for the past six years it has been run at Apex Park in Highbridge. It is organised by a committee of people who are interested in and have a passion for play. Numbers increase each year and 2013 saw over 6000 children attend the event. All children have to be accompanied by an adult. Activities are arranged for children aged 0 – 14yrs. The event is FREE. The committee have to rely on obtaining grants to run the day. Sedgemoor District Council is very much involved and we have received grants from County Councillors, Burnham and Highbridge Town Council and The Somerset Freemasons for funding this year. There is an opportunity on the day for those attending to make donations of cash to enable the Playday to run each year! If every child paid £1 we would definitely be able to ensure the Playday runs next year. This year the Playday is to be run on Wednesday 5th August at Apex Park 10am 3pm. There are over 45 activities which include climbing wall, archery, canoeing, fishing, Forest School, drumming, Man from Story Mountain, Action Pussycat, Zorbs, stories, arts and crafts, music and movement, circus skills, street dancing, Kingston Exotics, inflatables, magic, and rope building! We have some additional activities this year that people are doing free of charge for the committee. Various food outlets are booked or families are able to enjoy eating their own picnic lunches in the beautiful park area. If you haven’t been to the Playday before, do come along as it is a fantastic day! If you feel able to help or if you wish to know more, please contact Rosie Pike on 07867 967087 or email her at rosiepike47@gmail.com.

Study loans available for adults 24+ A brand new year means an exciting range of new opportunities! Have you thought about enhancing your personal or career possibilities by joining a course at Bridgwater College? With an Advanced Learning Loan for those aged 24 years or above, you can choose from a range of courses for adults and gain a new qualification, change your career path, increase your earning potential, or, on a personal level, increase your self-esteem, meet new people and learn a new skill. Loans are available for most Level 3 and Level 4 courses (exceptions apply), and repayments will not start until you are earning over £21,000 a year. Loans are not means tested and there are no credit checks, nor does it matter if you have already completed a course at that level. What’s more, loans for the Access to Higher Education Diploma will not have to be repaid at all if you go on to complete a university degree course. If you don't qualify for a free course or a 24+ Advanced Learning Loan and you are on a low income or are in receipt of other benefits such as Income Support, Council Tax Benefit, Housing Benefit or Employment Support Allowance (non-WRAG), you may be able to receive support from the Bridgwater College Learning Support team. Bridgwater College offers a wonderful range of courses, which may help you to train for your work, to progress your career, to gain a new qualification, or to learn new skills and hobbies. As well as the variety of course subjects, there are different places and ways of delivery. What can you do with dog poo? Compost composition: garden waste, some foods, veggie pet bedding but no dog poo By Nick Cater The leanest greenest person I know – keen Somerset waste reducer-reuserrecycler Kath Kelly, author of Square Meals for Tough Times and How I Lived a Year on Just a Pound a Day – once asked me a simple question: “Can you compost dog poo?” Given the sheer amount of waste that domestic animals produce – not just dogs but heavy cat litter trays, and all those rabbits, hamsters and guinea pigs, a single simple solution would be a great help. True, vegetarian pets’ bedding and manure can be carefully home composted or – with a subscription from Sedgemoor District Council – added to your fortnightly garden waste collection (this does not include the waste output of micro-pigs or racing pigeons, or that weighty kitty litter). Cats and dogs are a problem, because their faeces can contain parasites and disease organisms with significant human health risks, which can only be destroyed with sustained high temperatures that the typical compost bin will not achieve. So it must be a firm “no” to dog or cat poo composting. For a sometimes hefty price, there are specialist ‘dog loos’ that break down the poo, while some have enough land to let animals sort themselves out, and others may mistakenly believe that a plastic bag hung from a tree during “walkies” is acceptable. But most owners have a heavy carbon paw print from sending dog and cat poo to decay over decades and produce greenhouse gas pollution in landfill via their refuse bin at more than £100 a tonne. The most recent composition analysis found that 12% of the average Somerset refuse bin by weight was animal waste or non-organic pet litter. That was almost exactly the same weight as all plastics in the average bin, representing almost £1.5 million of the £12 million landfill bill council tax payers pay. PS: Apart from discarded pet food, never put animal waste in your kerbside food container. For more on refuse, recycling and even dog poo, see www.somersetwaste.gov.uk. Nick Cater is Senior Communications Officer at Somerset Waste Partnership, which manages waste and recycling services on behalf of all local authorities in Somerset.

Mobile Phone signal problems? Do you get problems with your mobile phone signal at home? Quite often when visiting clients in Burnham, Highbridge and Berrow, they comment that phone signal is not good at home or work. Most of the main providers now are facilitating new ways of getting signal, other than via the traditional phone masts. Here is a list of the main providers and some alternative ways of getting a signal. EE/T-mobile/Orange: The EE signal box connects to a broadband router and allows mobile phone users on EE/T-mobile/Orange to make calls via the Internet connection. These can be purchased directly from EE but I’ve seen them for around £100 on Ebay. Also, on EE if you have any iphone 5/6 or Samsung Galaxy S5 or higher, or a Microsoft Lumia 640, you can now make calls via any Wifi network using their new Wi-Fi calling feature. See here for more info: http://ee.co.uk/ee-and-me/network/wifi-calling Vodafone: This is another device that connects to a broadband router and allows phone calls to be routed via the Internet. See here: http://shop.vodafone.co.uk/shop/mobile-phone/accessories/ SKU75375-white o2: The o2 system is called a BoostBox although these seem to be quite hard to obtain unless you are on a business package. I would recommend calling o2 customer services to see if they will sell you one. Three: 3 have a device called the Home Signal which as the above, allows a connection to a broadband router. See here for more info: http://www.three.co.uk/Support/Devices/Phones/Home/Signal_Black Should you have any IT issues and would like us to visit, please see our larger advert on this page, or call me on 07973 536299. Investment in play is very important to Sedgemoor District Council, children and young people benefit greatly from having a variety of play and sport facilities to explore with their peers, and such equipment helps to ensure they lead an active and creative lifestyle.”

NOTICE BOARD
British Red Cross launches new mobility aids collection service in Burnham-on-Sea The British Red Cross has launched a new collection service for people who need a mobility aid, such as a wheelchair or walking frame, to help them regain their independence after an illness or accident. The service is being run on a trial basis in the town following the closure of the Red Cross mobility aids shop there last year. The service will work on an appointment basis, with members of the public collecting their equipment from a care home in the esplanade area of the town. Appointments can be arranged on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings between 10am and 1pm by calling The Red Cross on 01823 273746. Nick Greenhalgh, Red Cross mobility aids coordinator, says, “We closed the mobility aids centre in Burnham-on-Sea at the end of last year because the lease came to an end and the building was no longer fit for our purposes. “At the time we appealed to local organisations to get in touch if they had a space we could use on an occasional basis to store equipment and hold appointments with members of the public, and a local care home has kindly obliged. The new location is in the esplanade area and has good parking. Our volunteers from the previous centre are back with us providing the service, so we’re really grateful to them for sticking with us.” Items available to borrow include walking frames, wheelchairs, raised toilet seats and commodes and crutches. If people need a mobility aid outside the Burnham-on-Sea collection times, they can visit The Red Cross centres in Bridgwater and Taunton or arrange for items to be delivered for a small fee. To make an appointment to collect mobility aids in Burnham-on-Sea, or to book a delivery (for a small fee), call 01823 273746. There is no charge for borrowing items, but The Red Cross invites people to make a donation. To find out more about The Red Cross, please visit redcross.org.uk.

GARDENING JOBS FOR AUGUST Cut down dying haulms of potatoes at least one week before lifting them as this will harden the skins. Make sure runner beans are well watered and pinch the tops out when they reach the top of their supports. This will prevent the plants becoming top heavy. Keep an eye out for cabbage white caterpillars on brassicas. If needed check plants daily. As onions mature and leaves start to yellow, harvest them and allow them to ripen in a dry room, shed or garage out of direct sun. If you have to water, do this thoroughly and think about adding a liquid feed.
Summer fruits that have finished fruiting should have those old canes that had fruit on cut back to ground level. Leave the new green canes which have grown since spring alone, as these will have fruit on them next year. Damp down greenhouse floors on hot days and keep greenhouses well-ventilated. Remove dead flower heads as they fade, to encourage more flowers. Cut back perennials that have finished flowering, to half their height. Only keep the best fruit and vegetables for long term storage. Don't forget that hoe!

Marine Cove Vandalism Conviction Following vandalism in Marine Cove in October 2013, a local male has been charged and convicted. The cost of the damage caused was in excess of £10,000. Sedgemoor District Council have recently been advised by Lighthouse Victim and Witness Care that on 19th March 2015 Jesse Thorne pleaded guilty to criminal damage at Taunton Crown Court and was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment. A spokesperson for Sedgemoor District Council said, “We would like to thank Avon and Somerset Police for their diligence with the case and bringing the culprit to justice. We would also like to make special mention of the Sedgemoor District Council CCTV staff, who on the night of the incident used CCTV to record the vandalism, alert Police and then track the offender as he left the scene. This evidence and support to the Police proved invaluable on the night of the event and during the prosecution process and has resulted in a successful conviction.”
