We will then leave you to make a decision in your own time. You will not be harassed or badgered.

Have your say about shaping Sedgemoor’s future Local residents are being encouraged to seize the opportunity to have their say on how the district of Sedgemoor should grow and change over the next twenty years. Sedgemoor District Council has organised nineteen consultation events, as well as having the documentation online. Sedgemoor District Council has a Local Plan, known as its Core Strategy, which is up for its five-year review, and the Council would like to know what things people think need changing or updating within the document. This review will forward the plan by another five years, planning new development in the District up to 2032. To help gather this valuable feedback from the public, the Council has produced a consultation document and is inviting comments. Planning Officers have arranged a series of events, exhibitions and presentations where they can talk through the policies and listen to people’s views. The consultation is the first stage in a long prescribed process, which will end in June 2017. This consultation period runs until 18th December, after which the Local Plan will be re-drafted incorporating the changes, and put out for further consultation next summer. It will then be subject to examination by planning inspectors. Among the topics covered by the Local Plan are Housing, Employment, Retail and Infrastructure. When adopted, the Local Plan will identify the Council’s vision for how these and other topics should be managed, which policies should apply and where new development should be allocated. Now is the time to speak up about what sort of place residents want Sedgemoor to be in the future. Planning affects so many aspects of our daily lives, from where we live, how we travel, what careers we can choose and how we spend our leisure time, that is why taking an active part in its processes is so worthwhile. The consultation document, initial Sustainability Appraisal Report and other relevant supporting documents can be found online on the Council’s website: www.sedgemoor.gov.uk/ldf or at the Sedgemoor District Council Offices, Bridgwater House, Kings Square, Bridgwater TA6 3AR, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. For further information, please contact the Planning Policy team on 01278 435544 or email: ldf@sedgemoor.gov.uk.

The grotto will be open from 11am-4pm on 19th, 20th and 21st December. A small charge will be made, with all proceeds going to BARB Search & Rescue.

2015 Santa Paws Appeal – Help a homeless hound this Christmas In the run-up to Christmas, Sedgemoor District Council’s Dog Warden Service will once again be running a ‘Santa Paws’ shoe box and gift appeal to help give the stray and homeless dogs in kennels a Christmas to remember. More dogs are brought in as strays during this time and it can be difficult re-homing them, not least because little is known about the dogs. Sedgemoor District Council is therefore appealing to dog lovers to donate either a shoe-box filled with presents such dog chews, toys, balls, blankets and treats or just an individual gift or toy. Sedgemoor’s Dog Wardens pick up stray and abandoned dogs and try and reunite them with their owners or find new homes where this is not possible. Many dogs are left out on the streets abandoned and having to fend for themselves. After the success of last year’s appeal we are again running the Santa Paws appeal to help these unwanted dogs. People can leave their gifts at drop-off points from 1st December until 21st December. Please clearly mark the box or gift with ‘Sedgemoor Santa Paws Appeal’. Local drop-off points are: • Pampurred Pets, Sanders Garden Centre, Brent Knoll • The Pet Shop, High Street, Burnham-on-Sea • Animal Fayre, 3 Victoria Street, Burnham-on-Sea. A Sedgemoor District Council Dog Warden said, “If owners acted more responsibly, considering the implications of owning a dog before getting one and getting dogs spayed and chipped, we often wouldn’t have to put dogs in kennels or find homes for these poor unwanted animals. We are meant to be a nation of dog lovers, but the stark reality is that many are leaving their once beloved pets out in the cold. This could be because they can no longer afford to keep them for whatever reason. There is a very serious message to our Santa Paws appeal and that is to think really hard before you buy a pet as a Christmas present. They need time and money spending on them. You need to feed them, exercise them, vaccinate them, and be able to pay for any unforeseen vet bills and kennel fees when you go away. So if when you next buy your much loved pets their treats you can manage to buy one extra to donate to our Santa Paws appeal, you will be bringing a wag to the tail of a homeless hound this Christmas.”

Dreaming of a Waste-Free Christmas Celebrate and save: a little planning will cut costs and leave less rubbish. By Nick Cater. With just a little planning, Burnham-on-Sea’s smart shoppers can easily save plenty by wasting less and recycling more over Christmas and the New Year. Here’s a simple checklist: Food - plan menus and check portion sizes to buy just what you need. Freeze or reuse leftovers, and compost sprout peelings, apple cores and tea bags. Gifts - invest in better-made presents that last, recycled or vintage gifts, or low-waste experiences, tokens or e-books. Wish lists mean no guesswork or binned gifts. Wrapping - sticky tape is unrecyclable; try recycled wrapping paper and ribbon or, for soon-to-be favourite things, brown paper packages tied up with reusable string. Cards - buy recycled cards; encourage the kids to make them from magazines and old cards, or use e-cards and festive texts. Decorations - mistletoe and other greenery give a traditional look and can be composted later. Deck the halls with boughs of holly and other garden displays. Tree - creative recycling makes great decorations, from pine cones to old costume jewellery or even keys. The best tree could be one that lives on in a garden pot. Meanwhile, spread the waste load by getting stuff out early, or take it to Highbridge or any other recycling site. All sites will be on their usual schedules but closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. Collections are unaltered until Christmas Day but later pick-ups of rubbish and recycling are changing: • 25th December collections will be on Sunday 27th December • Monday 28th collections on Tuesday 29th • Tuesday 29th on Wednesday 30th December • Thursday 31st on Saturday 2nd January • Friday 1st January collections on Monday 4th January. Collections in week starting Monday 4th January will be one day later, including those due on Friday being made on Saturday 9th January. If the North Wind doth blow, check weather and waste advice on Somerset Waste Partnership’s website – www.somersetwaste.gov.uk – Facebook or Twitter. The website also has more about festive waste services, and how to recycle the Christmas tree. Nick Cater is Senior Communications Officer at Somerset Waste Partnership, which manages waste and recycling services on behalf of all local authorities in Somerset.

Stage 2 Drama Presents Comedy Double Bill Stage 2 drama group are delighted to welcome our lovely audience back to our winter evening of drama and fun. A comedy double bill of hilarious drama will be performed at Berrow Village Hall on Wednesday 2nd, Friday 4th and Saturday 5th December. Boo, hiss and laugh at our cautionary melodrama! "Scoundrels & Stratagems" involves the schemes, plots, counterplots and bungling attempts of the imperious Lady Pinchbeck, dastardly Squire Buzzard and sinister Lamprey to discredit, disinherit and kidnap various young innocents. Played in traditional melodramatic style with impassioned over-acting throughout, this is a hugely enjoyable romp. Enjoy a brilliantly funny comedy, another of David Tristram's superb comedies, "Last Panto In Berrow" . This comedy sees the familiar four members of a struggling drama group coming up with yet another desperate scheme to draw an unsuspecting audience to one of their (infamously bad) shows. Gags come thick and fast in this excessively witty theatrical parody: Joyce wants to be in a musical but is tone deaf, meanwhile the over-bearing Gordon labours under the misapprehension of being able to write a script. Margaret is quite a diva and is continually battling with Bernard who likes to take everyone down a peg or three. Throw in a panto horse and it's a recipe for mayhem! Do come along for a fun and laughter filled evening of dramatic local entertainment. Tickets are only £7.50 and are available by calling 01278 782319 / 795619 or from our website: stage2drama.org/contact. The ticket price includes a light supper and there will be a bar serving both alcoholic and soft drinks.

Investors in People is the internationally recognised symbol of people management. The standard defines what it takes to lead, support and manage people well for consistently high results. Following a rigorous assessment by an independent assessor, the Council was found to have fulfilled all 196 of the criteria necessary to attain the highest possible accreditation, Gold, for training and developing its staff. Investors in People Gold accreditation is a sign of excellence and being a great employer. In the report, which confirmed the Gold status, the assessor commented, “At my last assessment visit in 2012, you were demonstrating much excellence practice in how you were supporting and developing your people. Considering the intervening period has been one of continuing change and challenge, it is remarkable that you have improved even further. The strategies that you have employed to ensure that you are able to make best use of your people resources, whilst offering the reassurance of continuing employment as a Council priority, are clearly motivating your workforce to play their part in delivering your core values of Customer Focus and Low Council Tax. Once again, my visit to Sedgemoor District Council has been a very enjoyable, interesting and informative experience.”

Sedgemoor Gains Prestigious Status Sedgemoor District Council has become the first local authority in Somerset to gain the prestigious National Skills Academy for Construction status from the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB). The accreditation means that the Council can work with developers, builders and training partners on construction projects in the district, to increase economic growth by creating skills, training and employment opportunities. Sedgemoor’s aim in applying for the status is to adopt the approach across all its planning and procurement activities which will lead to more consistency and best practice in terms of employment and skills on sites and in the supply chain. The first two sites that will see the effects of the new approach are the Redrow Homes’ scheme for 58 properties at Chilton Trinity and Puriton’s 67 home development by Taylor Wimpey. A spokesman for Sedgemoor District Council said that the Council was seeing significant growth and investment in the district and it was important that this should be delivered in a way that brought maximum benefit to residents through the quality of jobs created, skills acquired and projects completed. Karen Blacklaw, Strategic Partnership Adviser for CITB, said, “The granting of Skills Academy status will help Sedgemoor District Council and its contractors give young people a wide range of opportunities through the project, including developing skills that will last them a lifetime. We have been impressed with the commitment shown by the council to the values that underpin this accreditation and would like to congratulate the team on their success. I’m looking forward to working closely with the council on projects in the district, and seeing the impact on the local community in terms of employment and skills.”

GARDENING JOBS FOR DECEMBER Very cold and wet winter weather dictates the possibility of outside work in the garden. It is often better to delay tasks until it improves. Finish digging the plot and gather up the last of the autumn leaves. Tidy up greenhouses and sheds and wash any dirty pots and containers. Pruning fruit trees like apples and pears will hopefully improve the fruit yields for next year. Remove any dead and damaged growth plus any crossing branches and clear out the centre of the tree. Check tree stakes and ties. Consider a winter wash on dormant trees and apply grease bands to the trunks. Do not prune stone fruits such as plums and cherries during winter as they are prone to silver leaf disease if you do so. Prune them instead during warmer months. Check any stored food products for damage and disease and keep a lookout for mice.

Under cover, sow broad beans, early summer brassicas and onions and shallots in pots or modules to transplant outside later. When they do go outside eventually, it is a good idea to give them some protection from the weather by using cloches or fleece. Continue planting new plants like trees and shrubs if the weather permits. Plan ahead for next year by ordering new seeds, potatoes, plants, composts and sundries. Put your feet up, take time to relax and enjoy yourself and daydream about 2016. It’s a leap year so you have an extra day gardening! No meeting in December. The next meeting is 18th January 2016, when the Gold Club will be demonstrating winter hanging baskets and primrose balls. The Society’s Annual Dinner takes place on the evening of Friday 11th December at the Dunstan Inn, Love Lane, Burnham-on-Sea. Please contact Anne Bone on 01278 786600 for details.

FOR MORE TIPS, WHY NOT JOIN YOUR LOCAL GARDENING GROUP? For more tips, why not join your local gardening group? The Burnham and District Horticultural Society meet at 7.30pm on the third Monday of each month (except December) at the Community Centre, Berrow Road. The next meeting is on Monday 16th November, when there will be a talk from Roy Cheek on ‘Winter Jewels – Crocus and Snowdrops’. All welcome. Members of the Society free, visitors £1.50.
