Burnham-on-Sea WI The next meeting for the Burnham-on-Sea WI is on Tuesday 24 February at 2pm at the Community Centre, Berrow Road. Our speaker is Ruth Jacobs, who will be telling us about ‘Vintage Wonders’. This includes fans, jewellery etc. All are welcome to come along. If you want to know more, then please contact Brenda on 01278 781771 or email her at adams2324@aol.com. Last month I started the history of the WI. Here are some more interesting facts: In 1920, a resolution was passed urging the Government to pass the Bastardy Bill without delay - for the protection of children of unmarried girls. It also urged WI members to stand for Parish and District councils and for the committees dealing with health and housing. In 1921, the resolution this year was to urge all women to support the principles of the Plumage Bill, now before Parliament - an Act to prohibit the importation of birds into the UK. In 1922, the resolution urged more public health education to prevent venereal disease. In 1923, Ringmer WI (East Sussex) bought a bath chair for the village, which members could borrow for 1d a day or non-members for 3d. The chair was to be returned ‘clean after use’. Resolution passed concerning the humane slaughter of animals. In 1924, Jerusalem was first sung at the AGM, starting a tradition that continues to this day in many WIs. WI members demanded greater access to books. Thanks mainly to lobbying from WI members, over 18 counties inaugurated rural library schemes. In many instances, the WI acted as library agent for the village, receiving, distributing and changing books. Resolution: That WIs be asked to use their influence to secure an increase in the number if women police throughout the country. In 1925, Bushford WI (Somerset) debated, ‘Should the husband help in the home?’ The Resolution concerning high level of maternal mortality associated with child-bearing and its effect on the health and welfare of families.

And so, that was Christmas - did you have enough to eat? The decorations are back in the box, the tree composted, and the new school term has begun. Christmas has come and gone, so that’s about it for church until Easter. Right? Wrong. There are a lot of activities in churches through the whole year, and often go on behind the scenes. Take the food bank, as one example, which was set up almost three years ago, and is an initiative of many of the churches in the LocalReach area, from West Huntspill up to Lympsham. Food banks are increasingly well-known around the country, and it is a sad thing to say that they remain essential and used by many people who find it difficult to buy their own food. Since starting in 2012, the Highbridge Area Food Bank has supported thousands of people, all of whom are given access to the bank by being given a special form by ‘referring agencies’ such as schools and health centres. People are then given basic food parcels of staple food like pasta, tins of beans and soup, and biscuits. In general, most people only ever need to use the bank once, while they are in desperate need, and are extremely thankful for the gift of food for their family at that time. In the past eight months, we have given enough food out for around 2700 meals. It is deeply disappointing to have to have a food bank at all, of course; poverty should not be such a prevalent feature of our world. However, there is need, and as the churches work together to help, this is something that is central to our faith - to help those in need and to care for those who may be on the edge of society. The food bank is operated entirely by volunteers, people who give their time freely to help. Why do people do this? As Christians, the Bible makes it very clear. If you have a moment, have a read of Matthew’s Gospel, chapter 25, from verse 31. When we act in mercy, and show charity, we are doing God’s work. And that goes on through the whole year. Rev Simon Bale, Curate, St John’s, Highbridge.
The Coastline Singers The group meet on Tuesdays between 7.30pm-9.30pm at the West Huntspill Methodist Church Hall. Singing is good for the mind, body and soul! Come and join us-no auditions! Call 01278 784184 or email mary.lawrence@lineone.net.

Tips to help your dog to be safe and love his stay in kennels Leaving your loved one with strangers can be daunting, not just for your pet, but often leaves the owner with feelings of guilt and remorse for booking the holiday, spoiling fun for all concerned. Here are some tips to ease your minds. Always try to visit the kennel and spend some time there before the commencement of boarding. When your dog associates his prospective holiday home, whether Home Boarding or Commercial Kennels, with play, treats, a tickle around the ears, on the initial visit, they will be much more relaxed about going with new carers during a handover at the kennels on the commencement of booking. Take an unwashed garment of your own to leave with him, along with his own bedding and toys. Always act as if you are great friends with the kennel carers; a little role play will send him the message that he is joining another pack, you approve and he will relax much quicker. For your dog’s safety, do not take it for granted that the kennel or establishment is licensed; ask to see the current license - insurers usually will not cover without one, and you could be out of pocket, if there is an accident. Ensure that the place you are being shown is the actual place the dog is staying, especially if home-boarding. If unsure, phone your local licensing board at Sedgemoor District Council before you visit; they will be happy to tell you if the premises are safe, and other boarders immunised against infection, parasite free dogs, according to licensing rules. Pick the most suitable establishment to meet your pet’s needs, not the most expensive or cheapest. And watch his body language with his new carers during visits - dogs always tell the truth. As any child of the family, his holiday should be as good as yours - enjoy!

gardening jobs for February As a rule February, in gardening terms, is classed as early spring, but at this time of year our weather is most variable, so garden tasks must be weather related. Make sure lawn mowers are in good working order for the busy seasons ahead. If not too wet, lawns can be forked or spiked to improve drainage. Complete any plans for sowing and planting. Purchase new seeds if required. Shrubs and trees can be planted if soil conditions are suitable. Complete the pruning of fruit trees and bushes and give them a dressing of a high potash fertilizer like sulphate of potash.
Use cloches, fleece or polythene to warm up the soil for sowing and planting later. Inside a greenhouse, with protection, try starting shallots, onion sets, broad beans and peas in small pots or modules, for planting out later when they are established. Only sow tomatoes, aubergines and peppers if you can provide extra heat for the resulting young plants. Continue chitting seed potatoes. If conditions are right, sow some parsnips, bearing in mind they can take up to four weeks to germinate.
For more tips, why not join your local gardening group? Burnham-on-Sea and District Horticultural Society meets at 7.30pm on the third Monday of each month (except December) at the Community Centre, Berrow Road. The next meeting is on Monday 16 February, with a talk from Gilly Hayward on ‘Growing into Moor Plants’. All welcome. Members of the Society free, visitors £1.
Burnham-on-Sea Farmers’ Market: Garry Matthews of GM Country Sports
Garry is not only one of the longest serving traders at Burnham-on-Sea Farmers’ Market, but also one of the oldest (in the nicest possible way) with Somerset Farmers’ Markets. Besides Burnham, he’s traded for many years in the monthly market at Axbridge and the weekly market at Wells, and is known far and wide as ‘Garry the Game’. Garry offers a huge range of local game in season including pheasant, partridge, wild duck, rabbit, hare and guinea fowl. He also has cuts of venison all year round. Both the venison and the pheasant are converted by Garry into well-seasoned burgers and sausages that make a fantastic change from the more traditional ingredients. Do try toad in the hole made with venison or pheasant sausages. If you want information or advice about what to choose and how to prepare it, then it’s well worth talking to Garry. He’s not only very knowledgeable about game, but is also a keen (and very good) cook. He’ll take orders throughout the year (tel: 07802 566410), so you can be sure of getting the produce that you want. It’s easy to spot Garry at Burnham Market with his white coat, striped apron and well-stocked chiller cabinet. Throughout the winter months Garry always appears in a hat; customers and traders at the market know that summer has arrived when Garry’s hat stays at home.
Neighbourhood Planning
The Burnham and Highbridge area Neighbourhood Planning group is now analysing the returns for the survey which went out with the last edition of LocalReach (except Berrow, which is not in the study area). It's not too late to return yours or to fill it in online. Go to www. burnhamandhighbridgeneighbourhoodplan.org and follow the link. You can also use this to volunteer to help the process. Work on Burnham Town centre is continuing, and the group are now starting to look at Highbridge Town Centre and the demands for new housing. At the end of January they were briefed by a senior Sedgemoor planning officer on the latest housing figures, so now have the most accurate up-to-date information available. In another development, Year 8 and 10 students at King Alfred's school will also be looking at housing provision as part of their Geography curriculum, so will be able to feed their ideas into the process. Further consultation and feedback will occur as the process continues. 8 Advertising & Leaflet delivery call LocalReach on 01278 238000.

Lambing Fun Day After the heavy rainfall and dark skies that the winter months have brought with them, the lighter evenings, glimpse of a snowdrop or two, and new-born lambs jumping around the local fields, are the first signs of Spring. At Bridgwater College’s Cannington Centre, lambing season is in full swing. If you haven’t been to the College’s Lambing Fun Day event before, then put the date in your diary for a real treat! As the name suggests, it really is a great day out for all the family, and takes place this year on Sunday 8 March, 11am – 4pm. The event improves year on year, with more to see and do than ever. There are lots of activities lined up for the day, with sheep dog demonstrations, sheep shearing, milking demonstrations, ferret racing and tractor trailer rides, plus many more. There will be marquees dedicated to food and drink and children’s activities, and of course a chance to see and hold the ever-so-cute new-born lambs. Jeremy Kerswell, Head of Land-based Studies at the College says: “This event is always very popular and a great way for the community to see the College’s working farm in Cannington. So many people put on their wellies and join us for the day, immersing themselves in all the activities and watching the demonstrations. The tractor trailer rides and sheep shearing are especially popular with the children, and everyone enjoys browsing the product stalls and sampling local produce, available to buy. We’ve often had lambs born during the event day, and it is a wonderful opportunity for visitors to see the new-borns and enjoy a cuddle with some of the more confident lambs. The feedback we receive from the public is always very positive, and we are looking forward to this year’s event and meeting many new visitors to Rodway Farm.” For more information please view the events page on our website: www.bridgwater.ac.uk/events

New Year, New Effort Take a lead in wasting less, to hold down your ‘total household arisings’ 2015 is the perfect time for anyone in Burnham-on-Sea to start saving money by recycling more and wasting less. Latest Somerset figures suggest that while most people recycle, far more could easily be achieved by Burnham residents. Today’s 51% recycling rate means that almost half of all waste is being landfilled, costing all council tax payers in the county – including all those in Burnham – £12.2m this year. A third of the average refuse bin (or the black sacks of those without bins) is food, much of which could have been eaten, some of which could be home composted, and all of which can go into the food waste container and be recycled into clean green power at Somerset’s own anaerobic digestion plant down the road at Walpole. Half the typical refuse bin or black sacks could be recycled immediately in every home’s kerbside containers. Missing container? Contact Sedgemoor District Council on customer.services@ sedgemoor.gov.uk or 0845 4082543, or order online at www.somersetwaste.gov.uk. More from the average refuse bin or black sacks could be dropped off for recycling at Highbridge, Bridgwater – now open seven days, 8am-4pm – or any other recycling site. After years in which recession encouraged us all to make things last, and the annual amount families discarded - total household arisings fell below a tonne, but levels of what we throw away are going up. Yet with a dozen materials collected at the kerbside and 30+ taken at recycling sites, recycling more is easy. The year 2015 could bring more waste, cost and pollution for Burnham, or a chance for it to take a lead with simple steps to save money, recycle more and waste less. Nick Cater is Senior Communications Officer at Somerset Waste Partnership, which manages waste and recycling services on behalf of all local authorities in Somerset.

Dumb & Dumber Chimney Surprise Two jackdaws aptly named Dumb & Dumber surprised home owners near Bridgwater, by falling down their chimney into their living room. Response driver Greg was called to the property where ‘Dumb & Dumber’ were dazed and a little sooty, and were then taken straight to Secret World for treatment. The troublesome two were given treatment upon admission. Staff at Secret World said, “It’s not unusual for us to receive birds that accidentally tumble down a chimney, and these two were very lucky they didn’t sustain any major injuries.” Secret World has also been inundated with hedgehogs too small to hibernate; the most recent admission only weighing in at 150g. Hedgehogs need to be at least 600g in weight to survive the winter months. A recent Christmas appeal has been launched called ‘All Creatures Great and Small’, where the charity is asking for supporters to donate to this appeal by texting SWWR00 to 70070 to help animals through the festive season and beyond.

East Brent Park Improvements The ground works to install a small rocking roundabout and toddler springer in Orchard Close play area in East Brent will begin in early 2015. As well as the new roundabout and springer, two of the existing four swings will be replaced with cradle seats so that toddlers can enjoy them. The new equipment will be set into mulch safety surfacing. Scott Mason, Parks Officer said, “This project is designed to ensure the park offers a wide range of play opportunities for a broad age range of children. Older children will still have two swings to enjoy as well as a new roundabout which doesn’t just spin, but rocks as well. Toddlers and juniors will now be able to use the park for the new springer, roundabout and cradle swings. We hope children enjoy using these new items of play equipment.” Works are expected to take one week to complete. The project will cost £4,400 and is being funded by RLT2 Developer Contributions for Play which are held by Sedgemoor District Council.
Strictly Classical Do you like classical music? U3A’s Music Appreciation Group, met for the first time in June, and is open to anyone interested in the finest music, no matter how limited their knowledge may be. Most members take it in turn to present their choice of music, but nobody is obliged to do so. Most of us enjoy other people’s choices, especially when there is at least one item of an unusual nature. We have already ‘heard from’ all the great composers and many others. All of us have been introduced to ‘new’ music by the great masters – as well as to composers new to us. Listening together creates a great atmosphere. We meet together every two weeks from 1.45pm. Music begins at 2pm. We take a break around 3pm, leaving the rest of the allotted time for more music. Discussion can occur between items, so overall the presenter has to allow for about 1½ hours of music. A second Music Appreciation group is likely to be formed early in the New Year. Paul’s lounge takes up just ten of us, so now we are looking for a second venue to satisfy our growing waiting list. Come and join us!

Fourth Rotary Charity Swimarathon The fourth annual Swimarathon organised by the Rotary Club of Burnham-on-Sea will take place at Brean Splash on Sunday 8 February, starting at 10am. The Rotary Swimarathons have proved highly popular, with local voluntary organisations and businesses raising substantial sums of money for their chosen charities. This year’s event will follow the lines of last year. Medals and certificates will be presented to all participants. An entry fee of £25 will be payable to the Rotary Club for each team entered; all teams will retain the money they raise by sponsorship, and if they represent charitable organisations, their charities will be able to claim Gift Aid where applicable. Standard sponsorship forms will be available from the Rotary Club for the use of participating teams. Teams may consist of between two and eight swimmers, and more than one team may be entered by any group or business. Teams will swim for a maximum of 50 minutes – this is not a competition; swimmers can be sponsored by the length or at a flat rate. Several organisations have already entered teams, and more will be welcome. The names of swimmers need to be submitted by Saturday 31 January to the organiser, President Elect Ashley Edwards, on 01278 794304 or by email: info@ashleyedwards.co.uk, who will also supply any further information needed and will welcome offers of sponsorship.

Beware of Search Results
Local Expert Page
It has been apparent recently that sometimes fraudulent companies use “pay per click” advertising to appear at the top or side of the search engines. This means that you could search for something perfectly legitimate and think that you are clicking on a genuine company but in actual fact are clicking on a fraudulent website. For example, I had a customer recently who had problems with their Yahoo e-mail, so they typed Yahoo Technical Support into their search engine. Having obtained the search results they clicked on “Yahoo Technical Support”, then called the company who offered to remotely connect to their computer to fix the problem. After about an hour of activity, the phone rang and the customer who told that they would need to pay £160 as they had picked up a massive problem. The customer was horrified and swiftly put the phone down, only to discover that their Apple Mac had been compromised. The customer had not called Yahoo but a fake technical support company that hopes to scam people into paying a fee for technical support. These companies are often very plausible and seem to know what they are talking about, but often they use clever wording and examples to con their victim. The moral of this story is to check the address bar once you have clicked into a site to make sure it is the actual site that you should be on. For example (note a real website) www.yahoo.helpwithmypc.co.uk is NOT Yahoo but has the words Yahoo in the address bar. The correct Yahoo website would simply say www.yahoo.com/ (after the forward slash can be anything) so be very careful when searching for items online. Another new trick is that I believe names, phone numbers and account numbers have been sold by foreign call centre staff. This is in order for con artists to ring broadband customers claiming to be from the official technical support and saying that there is a problem. They even quote the person’s account number to appear valid. Please remember that if the phone ring and somebody claims to be from an organisation, please be very careful. If they ask to remote control your computer be VERY careful as I know of no time when this happens genuinely, unless you have specifically called in for help. Please remember to back up your important data such as photos, documents etc – I meet far too many people in Burnham & Highbridge who have not backed up their data. Should you need any help with any aspect of computing, please call Neil Buzzard on 07973 536299,or e-mail sales@e-cps.co.uk

CCTV: A year in numbers Sedgemoor District Council’s CCTV department monitors 147 CCTV cameras in addition to a number of dedicated Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras across Sedgemoor and the two neighbouring authorities of Taunton Deane and South Somerset. Across the major towns within the three areas, this works out as monitoring forty five cameras in Bridgwater, ten within Burnhamon-Sea, fifty four across Taunton, six within Wellington, and twenty five in Yeovil. During 2014, Sedgemoor’s CCTV team dealt with 3659 incidents resulting in 1213 people being arrested. These figures are for live incidents monitored and recorded by the CCTV operators. These figures do not include incidents or arrest figures for crimes that were dealt with through post incident investigations by the police where CCTV footage was used, therefore arrest figures will be higher than the 1213 recorded by CCTV. Broken down into Local Authority areas, Sedgemoor had 1418 incidents resulting in 439 arrests, Taunton Deane had 1667 incidents resulting in 553 arrests, with South Somerset having 635 incidents resulting in 221 arrests. Sedgemoor District Council’s CCTV Operators, who ensure the CCTV Control Room is staffed 24hrs a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, also took 2350 out of hours emergency calls from the public. Broken down these relate to: · 1481 calls for Homes in Sedgemoor regarding emergency repairs · 361 calls regarding lost or stray dogs · 277 incidents of Anti-Social Behaviour · 19 Highways concerns · 97 street cleanliness concerns · 115 enquiries about flooding or pumping stations. Barry Donbavand, Sedgemoor’s CCTV Manager said, “We have had another busy year in the CCTV team and continue to work closely with Avon and Somerset Police and our Local Authority partners to get the best results and make the areas we monitor as safe as possible.”

Burnham-on-Sea Motor Boat & Sailing Club We enjoy magnificent views of the River Parrett, Bristol Channel, North Somerset coastline from our Clubhouse and open balcony. We use drying moorings on the River Brue, and our pontoon system continues to be improved to increase accommodation and has been upgraded to improve the overall facility. We sail in extreme tidal waters so consequently, sailing time is limited by the tide, which gives us access for approximately two hours either side of high water. The Club has some 120 members from all walks of life. There are different types of membership including social if you are just interested in the boating scene and might be considering giving it a try. We have been predominately a sailing club but those with motor boats and fishing boats are also welcome. We are currently investigating the possibility of making our facilities available to people who might be interested in establishing a gig rowing club. We want to encourage all people to come and enjoy safe boating! During the sailing season some members may be willing to take new or prospective members out to sample the waters, at their own risk. Come to the Clubhouse on a Wednesday evening or Sunday lunchtime and ask to speak to a Committee Member for more information. There are opportunities to explore further afield by joining informal cruises arranged during the season so that boats can travel in company. Our moorings are on the River Brue and we have a good sailing area in front of the town; this is relatively protected by Steart Island from the rougher sea conditions beyond. Alternatively sailing south up the River Parrett which again can be much more sheltered and less rough, is very enjoyable. Some organised racing does also take place. You are welcome to contact the Membership Secretary: memsec.bosmbsc@gmail.com or check our website for more information: http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/burnhamsailingclub.
