British Red Cross launches new mobility aids collection service in Burnham-on-Sea
The British Red Cross has launched a new collection service for people who need a mobility aid, such as a wheelchair or walking frame, to help them regain their independence after an illness or accident. The service is being run on a trial basis in the town following the closure of the Red Cross mobility aids shop there last year. The service will work on an appointment basis, with members of the public collecting their equipment from a care home in the Esplanade area of the town. Appointments can be arranged on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings between 10am and 1pm by calling the Red Cross on 01823 273746. Nick Greenhalgh, Red Cross Mobility Aids Coordinator, says: “We closed the mobility aids centre in Burnham-on-Sea at the end of last year because the lease came to an end and the building was no longer fit for our purposes. At the time we appealed to local organisations to get in touch if they had a space we could use on an occasional basis to store equipment and hold appointments with members of the public, and a local care home has kindly obliged. The new location is in the Esplanade area and has good parking. Our volunteers from the previous centre are back with us providing the service, so we’re really grateful to them for sticking with us.” Items available to borrow include walking frames, wheelchairs, raised toilet seats and commodes and crutches. If people need a mobility aid outside the Burnham-on-Sea collection times they can visit The Red Cross centres in Bridgwater and Taunton or arrange for items to be delivered for a small fee. To make an appointment to collect mobility aids in Burnham-on-Sea, or to book a delivery (for a small fee), call 01823 273746. There is no charge for borrowing items, but The Red Cross invites people to make a donation. To find out more about The Red Cross please visit redcross.org.uk.

Secret World launches summer appeal to help rescued animals get back to the wild Secret World Wildlife Rescue has seen a record number of wild animals rescued this year, and this summer the team at the centre in East Huntspill expect to help over 2,500 more. Animals like Ed and Piran, two fox cubs orphaned when they were tiny babies. Piran was found under a shed in Bristol, alone and crying, so young that his umbilical cord was still attached. Ed was found near Crewkerne by a dog walker, cold and alone. The two cubs have since been joined by five friends – five more orphaned fox cubs rescued by the charity’s dedicated team of volunteer response drivers. The cubs were hand-reared on puppy milk, and now they’re onto solid food it’s time to cut their contact with humans and prepare them for the wild. This is a gradual process which takes time, space, care and lots of nutritious food! Secret World urgently needs to raise £15,000 by the end of the summer to get these and other rescued animals back to the wild where they belong. You can support the Wild Futures appeal to give Ed, Piran and friends a future back in the wild. £15 will feed a fox cub for six weeks in their pre-release pens. £23 will cover fuel costs for a response driver to rescue a cub. Donate at www.secretworld.org/wildfutures or text SWWR22 £15, or the amount you want to give to 70070. You can visit Secret World at their ‘Spines and Shells’ open weekend on 25th – 26th July. Come and learn more about hedgehogs and tortoises, and enjoy specialist talks and activities. Donations will be gratefully received. No booking required. Opening times are 10am to 4pm each day. Learners Access 24+ Advanced Learning Loan A Government loan is now available for learners who are aged 24+ and starting a course at Levels 3 or 4 from 1 August 2015! The Advanced Learning Loan is designed to support learners with their course fees in a similar way to how students studying university level courses receive a higher education loan. Over the previous two years over 340 students at Bridgwater College have accessed a 24+ Advanced Learning Loan, from areas all over the South West, from Exeter to Bristol, to Castle Cary. A number of Level 3 and 4 courses at Bridgwater College are eligible for the loan, including Barbering, Furniture Design and Counselling. Access to Higher Education Diplomas are also eligible, where the loan will be written off if the learner completes a university course, essentially making the course free! Any qualification previously achieved will not prevent the learner from accessing a loan and being eligible for the loan is not assessed on income; credit checks will not be carried out. The loan does not have to be paid back until the learner earns over £21,000 per annum. Angelina Clerkin, from Bridgwater said, “Before I had heard of the 24+ Advanced Learning Loan I had given up on going to College and being able to get into university. I did not have the money to pay for the Access course myself this year, and the loan has meant that I can concentrate on my studying, not how to pay for my studies. I'm now able to go to university in London, fulfil my ambition of studying mental health nursing, and start the career I've wanted for a long time.”

Muck and brass: 10 recycling sites offer a chargeable service for commercial waste At a recycling site recently, I overheard one man tell another that he was dropping off his commercial waste. I explained to the business owner that enterprises must not use a recycling site that is free only for household waste, and pointed him out to site staff. No doubt this was an unintended one-off error, yet it is an important issue. Each Burnham-on-Sea household pays close to £175 a year for waste services. That is under 50p a day for Somerset’s 20 million kerbside collections a year and 16 recycling sites open a total of more than 37,000 hours annually, plus £12 million spent landfilling around 120,000 tonnes of waste, with about the same tonnage recycled into new products and packaging. Business rates do not include waste services, so every enterprise – B&B, tradesperson, shop, café and more – should know that they must pay for this. To make it easier for businesses, in addition to a range of private firms, 10 Somerset recycling sites – Highbridge and Bridgwater (Saltlands) as well as Chard, Frome, Minehead, Street, Taunton (Priorswood), Wellington (Poole), Williton and Yeovil – offer a chargeable service for all sorts of commercial waste. Businesses using recycling centres without paying are effectively deciding that you should pay for their waste. This gives them an unfair advantage over rival businesses that pay their way. And Burnham’s £175 a year bargain will not stay cheap if they shift their costs onto your household tab. When rogue traders fly-tip rubbish they force you to pay to clear their mess, and illegal use of household recycling sites by traders, shops or other enterprises is just a more open way of doing the same thing. But every Burnham citizen can defend themselves against business abuse of household waste services. Know something? Call Somerset Direct on 0300 123 2224. If you spot something that could be wrong at a recycling site, just tip off any staff member. For details of commercial waste services, see www. somersetwaste.gov.uk/business. Nick Cater is Senior Communications Officer at Somerset Waste Partnership, which manages waste and recycling services on behalf of all local authorities in Somerset.
A Career in the Arts – Selena Keedwell
“So, what do you do?” It’s the question every Artist dreads and I feel a sudden need to justify my career choice and credibility. “I’m a Theatre Practitioner and a Drama Teacher”, I reply. I include both descriptions, as I feel the need to justify my choice to work in the Arts, by backing it up with a ‘proper job’, but for the last 15 years I have been incredibly fortunate to make a career in the Arts, yet I wonder why I still feel it is not always socially accepted. My latest project uses Verbatim Theatre to explore responses to ill mental health and I am hugely grateful to the Arts Council for awarding the initial Research & Development period to allow me to make the work. Since February, I have been privileged to have met many people, with shared experiences - interviewing local residents about their experiences, recorded voices, and edited the material to form an audio script. The material collected through this is incredibly powerful. This has not been an easy process; at times I have questioned the ethics around it, if it is right, and if I am up to the job! It has fired the passion in me, to make positive changes in the way we view ourselves and others with regards to our Mental Health through the Arts. The next phase involves working with Actors, a Dramaturg, Director, Social Media Creatives, Digital Media Artists, Musicians, Producer and Stage Manager – all viable, important Arts jobs. Employment will happen in Somerset. Artists will collaborate with Mental Health professionals and Education specialists so will learn from and respond to each other. Without the funding, this work would not happen. In a country increasingly driven by statistics and data, with Ebacc subjects being the only way that schools can achieve Ofsted's 'Outstanding', an Artist has to fight to make work happen. Creatives are often advised to 'get a proper job' and are expected to work for free. Innovation, creativity and 'soft' skills are as important as the Sciences, Engineering and Statistics. Not all outcomes can be measured statistically; the power of Artistic experiences to change our way of viewing the world, and the decision to work as an Artist, should be valued just as equally.

Sedgemoor Playday Since 2001, a Playday has run in conjunction with the National Playday, and for the past six years it has been run at Apex Park in Highbridge. It is organised by a committee of people who are interested and have a passion for play. Numbers increase each year, and 2013 saw over 6000 children attend the event. All children have to be accompanied by an adult. Activities are arranged for children aged 0 – 14yrs. The event is FREE. The committee have to rely on obtaining grants to run the day. Sedgemoor District Council is very much involved and we have received grants from County Councillors, Burnham and Highbridge Town Council and The Somerset Freemasons. There is an opportunity on the day for those attending to make donations of cash to enable the Playday to run each year! If every child paid £1 we would definitely be able to ensure the Playday runs next year. This year the Playday is to be run on Wednesday 5th August at Apex Park, 10am - 3pm. There are over 45 activities which include a climbing wall, archery, canoeing, fishing, Forest School, drumming, man from story mountain, Action Pussycat, Zorbs, stories, arts and crafts, music and movement, circus skills, street dancing, Kingston Exotics, inflatables, magic, and rope building! We have some additional activities this year that people are doing free of charge for the committee. Various food outlets are booked or families are able to enjoy eating their own picnic lunches in the beautiful park area. If you haven’t been to the Playday before, do come along as it is a fantastic day! If you feel able to help or if you wish to know more, please contact Rosie Pike on 07867 967087 or email her at rosiepike47@gmail.com.

Update on Windows 10
The 29th July has been given as the release date for Microsoft’s exciting new operating system - Windows 10. My expectation is that this will improve the computing experience for all users and should be considered a worthwhile upgrade for all. For those that already have Windows 8.1, the transition will be very smooth, as the functionality is quite similar. With improved security, web browser, many more features and for first time, Microsoft has allowed users of Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 to obtain a free upgrade (for a period of 12 months) providing certain criteria are met. Apparently, Microsoft will not be releasing further versions of Windows but will release regular maintenance patches up & updates so improve the quality of Windows 10. Some of you will have seen a small white windows logo in the bottom right hand corner of your computer – in order to obtain the free upgrade on 29th July, it requires you to register by clicking this logo. For those who do not see the logo, it could be because of the following reasons: 1) Your computer has not updated fully using Windows update; 2) Your version of Microsoft Windows precedes Windows 7; 3) You are running Windows 8 not 8.1; 4) Your version of Microsoft Windows is not genuine. The upgrade is said to be around 3 gigabytes in size, so those with slow broadband, may have a little wait for the download to complete. For those of you that would like to see more about Windows 10 – please visit here: www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/features. A new Apple Mac operating system due soon: Apple have always given away operating system updates for free, providing the hardware is capable of running it. For Mac computers, there is a new release due out soon called “El Capitan” and for iphones/ ipads there is IOS9. Quite often I visit Apple owners that are running older versions of the operating software. For computers, it is worth going into the App Store to see if you can upgrade to the current Mac operating system called Yosemite (this is free). For iphone and ipad users, go into Settings, then General and then Software update to see if an update is available. The current latest software version is IOS 8.3 (at the time of writing) If you do not have enough free memory to run the upgrade, it is possible to connect your device to a computer and update is via iTunes with a much less installation memory requirement/ As always, if you have any computer issues and would like me to visit you at your home or business, please call me on 07973 536299 or e-mail sales@e-cps.co.uk Neil Buzzard, Director, Computer Problem Solutions Ltd.

Sedgemoor Citizens’ Advice Bureau Sedgemoor Citizens’ Advice Bureau is seeking volunteers to join its team. Every year Sedgemoor Citizens’ Advice Bureau helps about 5000 people who are experiencing problems in their lives. These problems may be about debt, employment, relationships, benefits, housing, consumer matters, utilities or a combination of these, or other issues. The need for the Bureau’s services continues to grow year on year and the present economic austerity has produced a sharp increase in demand. Often, but not always, our clients are people who find dealing with officialdom and documentation a challenge and need help to resolve issues and negotiate with large organisations. To continue to provide our service to the people of Sedgemoor, we need to recruit volunteers with a wide range of skills. Whilst we are always looking for new advisers, we also need administration staff, trustees (the Bureau is a registered Charity) and social policy workers. If you have a keen interest in helping your fellow citizens through one of these roles, please do get in touch by ringing 01278 459009. No special skills are needed as there is thorough training for all roles. You are assured of a warm welcome. Sedgemoor Citizens’ Advice Bureau, Royal Clarence House, High Street, Bridgwater, TA6 3BH

Happy Birthday Burnham on Sea WI
It is our 38th birthday in July and we always sing Happy Birthday at this meeting. Do you know where this song originated? Happy Birthday had its origins in 1893 when Mildred Hill, a teacher in America put together a simple song - Good morning to you, good morning to you, good morning dear children, good morning to you. This was used as a welcoming song sung by the teacher to the class. It proved popular in reverse with children singing it to their teacher with the word 'children' changed to 'teacher'. The change from Good Morning to Happy Birthday seems to have come from the children themselves as they liked the song enough to want to sing it at parties. The Hill family felt they should have credit for the song and make some profit from it. In 1934 they established a copyright for the song and it was officially published in 1935 as Happy Birthday. They have the copyright until 2030. Luckily, this does not rule out it being sung privately. It is named in the Guinness Book of Records as one of the most sung songs in the English language along with ‘For He's a Jolly Good Fellow’ and ‘Auld Lang Syne’. Royalties must be paid if the song is part of a profit making enterprise such as a television show, a commercial stage performance or if it is built into toys, music boxes, watches, mobile phones and 'singing ' birthday cards. The Hill family established a foundation through which royalties are paid, and it receives several million dollars a year. Two performances of Happy Birthday are particularly famous. At President Kennedy's birthday concert in May 1962, Marilyn Munroe gave a memorable performance of the song. This was her last major public appearance as she died three months later. In 1969 the song had its longest distance broadcast when the crew of Apollo 9 sang Happy Birthday to the NASA director Christopher Kraft. For more information on Burnham-on-Sea WI please contact the President, Pat Barthram, on 01278 794695 or go to our website www.burnhamwi.btck.co.uk.

Friends of Burnham-on-Sea War Memorial Hospital To the year ended 28 February 2015, the Friends of Burnham Hospital have raised £14,000 in subscriptions, donations and legacies, and from its events, for the benefit of patients and staff. This sum has enabled the Friends to purchase essential equipment for the hospital. This includes blood pressure monitors for the side rooms, and beds that can be lowered to ground level to help avoid falls, and nearly £7,000 worth of equipment for the minor injuries unit. Recently the go-ahead has been given to buy furnishings for the nurses’ room as it is important to look after hard-working staff. This in turn helps to make life better for patients. Next year marks the 50th anniversary of the setting up of the Friends, and there are plans to celebrate this with a refurbishment of the enclosed garden at the rear of the hospital, with a new surface which will be safe and accessible to patients requiring wheelchairs or walking frames. There will also be new garden furniture and appropriate shading so that patients can enjoy sunny days outside. Here, occupational therapists will be able to assist them in the open air, away from the confines of the wards, in preparation for returning home. Forthcoming fund-raisers include our annual fete in Manor Gardens (weather permitting) on August Bank Holiday Monday (31st August) – alternative venues in the event of bad weather will be the Baptist and Methodist Chapels in College Street. We are also planning a quiz night in Highbridge Community Hall on Saturday 12th September, and a music night at the Oaktree Arena on 10th October. The annual social event last March was a sell-out and raised an amazing £2785. Demand for tickets exceeded availability, so please make a note in your diary for next year’s event – 5th March 2016 – and book early to avoid disappointment. If you would like to support the Friends by becoming a member, please contact our Secretary, Eileen Shaw, by email: eileenshawtc@sky. com. Membership is only £5 a year and is a small price to pay to show your support for our Local Community Hospital and that you value it. Burnham Philosophy Group meeting 1st July, 7.30pm
Community Centre, Berrow Road, B-o-S TA8 2ET Do we have free will? It's a question that has puzzled philosophers and theologians for centuries, and feeds into numerous political, social, and personal concerns. Are we products of our culture, or free agents within it? How much responsibility should we take for our actions? Are our neural pathways fixed early on by a mixture of nature and nurture, or is the possibility of real choice and change always open to us? What role does our brain play in the construction of free will? What exactly are we talking about when we talk about 'Freedom' anyway? Using Julian Baggini's recent book ‘Freedom Regained’ as a starting point, our speaker Colin Stott will explore the whole complex and fascinating subject of free will. As always, non-members of the group are welcome and no prior knowledge of philosophy is required, but if you enjoy lively debate in a friendly atmosphere, you will enjoy this. Non-members £1.50, members free. For more information about the group go to www.burnhamphilosophygroup.org.uk.

Gardening Jobs for JULY Most plants will be planted out now, so your job is to look after them. Keep deadheading flowering plants and keep them well watered if necessary. Prune shrubs that have finished flowering to encourage new shoots for next year's blooms. Keep cutting hedging if required and mow lawns regularly. Net any ripening fruits unless they are grown in a fruit cage. Remember to pick fruit when it is young and fresh. Keep greenhouses well ventilated, and damp down flooring on very hot days. Feed and water greenhouse crops regularly using a high potash feed on fruiting crops. When strawberries have finished fruiting, cut
off the old leaves and tidy up the beds. Keep that hoe going and remove those weeds. There's still time to sow runner and French beans for a late crop, plus keep sowing broccoli, beetroot, lettuce and kale for autumn harvests. You can lift some onions if they are a useable size but leave the main crop until August. If shallots look ready they can be lifted and dried. If you have suffered in the past from leek moth problems take no chances and completely cover your plants with fleece or enviromesh to protect them until late September.
For more tips, why not join your local gardening group? The Burnham and District Horticultural Society meet at 7.30pm on the third Monday of each month (except December) at the Community Centre, Berrow Road. The next meeting is on Monday 20th July, with a demonstration of Floral Art with Garden Flowers by Kay Bennett.. All welcome. Members of the Society free, visitors £1.50.
Burnham Bowling Club Burnham Bowling Club outdoor lawn bowls is half way through the 2015 season and, due to the usual reduced fee for this time of the year, now is a good time to join. Whether or not you have been thinking of joining us, you have nothing to lose by making enquiries. Lawn bowls is a gentle sport, and the Club plays in several leagues as well as a large number of friendly matches against other clubs, with matches throughout Somerset. Members may choose to play casually rather than in matches and this is completely free to members, as often as you wish, throughout the season. If you are thinking of taking up a new hobby or just want to keep active, you will find bowling a friendly sport that could fulfil your needs. We offer free coaching for potential members, with no commitment to join, and all equipment is provided. And, as well as the reduced seasonal fees, the first year’s membership fee is reduced by a further 50% for new bowlers! For details, contact the Club Coach, Trevor Wellavize (07872 495970), the Men's Secretary, Alan Lane (01278 792508), or the Ladies' Secretary, Jill Burman (01278 788336).

Chairman Mike Murphy says, “This promises to be a great afternoon of free entertainment with something for everyone.” The final C.A.D.S event will be Music on the Green in Highbridge on Sunday 2nd August from 12.30pm.
