From the editor Welcome to the June edition of LocalReach. With the summer rapidly approaching there will be plenty to keep us entertained over the next couple of months. With the Folkfest fundraiser taking place this month with live music, and the CADs events in the Manor Gardens, there is plenty of opportunity to get outside for some live entertainment. We are extremely fortunate to have such a supportive community who are always willing to organise and show their support, and these public events, no matter what changes occur, it’s the people that make a community. Burnham Comedian Reached Competition Final, After Comedy Workshop Local stand-up comedian Richard Baum has reached the final of a Taunton comedy competition at the first attempt, after honing his skills as part of a stand-up comedy workshop organised by Somerset Skills and Learning. Richard, a novice comedian who attended the workshop in January, was inspired to enter Taunton's 'Stand up for Cider' competition, and in last Friday's heat was voted amongst the top acts to progress to July's prestigious final. Trish Caller of Genius PR and Events, the organiser of 'Stand up for Cider', was impressed at Richard's comedy debut. Richard himself said, “I always thought that I'd like to try stand-up, since there's barely a better feeling than making a room laugh. I (very) occasionally manage it at work or with my friends but obviously none of them have paid to be entertained or are waiting expectantly for the next gag! Bridging that gap is the challenge. “I had tried and failed a couple of times years ago, but when I saw the Somerset Skills & Learning workshop advertised, I thought 'Why not try again?' and I'm pleased I did. Not only did I meet like-minded people and find out about events like 'Stand up for Cider' but I had the chance to write and perform, and it re-started the ball rolling for me on both counts. There were 11 acts in the heat, many of whom were quite experienced. The top three as voted for by the audience went through, and I was delighted to be one of them!” For information on the next comedy workshop, email abowen@somerset.gov.uk.

Get the week off to a good start! Exercise to Music on Mondays at 9.45am in the Highbridge Community Hall. Start the week with some gentle movement. For more details contact Mary on 01278 784184 or email Mary.lawrence@lineone.net.

The session will provide training to volunteers to deliver Flexercise, a chair-based physical activity designed to benefit older people, those with physical disabilities or those in rehabilitation after a stroke. The half-day Flexercise training course will be held on Friday 12th June between 10am and 1pm. This course is designed for those working or volunteering within Sedgemoor, who are keen to learn new skills in delivering a chair-based activity programme to help maintain or enhance health and wellbeing. Previous course participants have included staff from care and residential homes as well as volunteers from Somerset Active Living Groups, the Alzheimer’s Society and Age UK Somerset. There is a £5 charge for the learning materials required to complete the Flexercise course. A certificate is given upon completion. A Sedgemoor District Council spokeswoman said, “Our last Flexercise training session in February 2015 saw seventeen volunteer and care and residential home staff from across the district trained to deliver Flexercise. We hope this session will see just as much interest. As spaces are limited, please contact us as soon as possible to reserve your space.” The course will be held in Sedgemoor District Council’s offices in Bridgwater House, King Square, Bridgwater, TA6 3AR. There is an opportunity on the day for those attending to make donations of cash to enable the playday to run each year! There are over 45 activities which include climbing wall, archery, canoeing, fishing, forest school, drumming, man from story mountain, Action Pussycat, Zorbs and stories, arts and crafts, music and movement, circus skills, street dancing, Kingston Exotics, inflatables, magic, rope building! If you haven’t been to the playday before do come along as it is a fantastic day! If you feel able to help or if you wish to know more please contact Rosie Pike 07867967087 or email her at rosiepike47@gmail.com.

British Red Cross launches new mobility aids collection service in Burnham-on-Sea The British Red Cross has launched a new collection service for people who need a mobility aid, such as a wheelchair or walking frame, to help them regain their independence after an illness or accident. The service is being run on a trial basis in the town following the closure of the Red Cross mobility aids shop last year. The service will work on an appointment basis with members of the public collecting their equipment from a care home in the esplanade area of town. Appointments can be arranged on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings between 10am and 1pm by calling the Red Cross on 01823 273746. Nick Greenhalgh, Red Cross mobility aids coordinator, says: “We closed the mobility aids centre in Burnham-on-Sea at the end of last year because the lease came to an end and the building was no longer fit for our purposes. At the time we appealed to local organisations to get in touch if they had a space we could use on an occasional basis to store equipment and hold appointments with members of the public and a local care home has kindly obliged. The new location is in the esplanade area and has good parking. Our volunteers from the previous centre are back with us providing the service so we’re really grateful to them for sticking with us.” Items available to borrow include walking frames, wheelchairs, raised toilet seats and commodes and crutches. If people need a mobility aid outside the Burnham-on-Sea collection times they can visit the Red Cross centres in Bridgwater and Taunton or arrange for items to be delivered for a small fee. To make an appointment to collect mobility aids in Burnam-on-Sea or book a delivery, call 01823 273746. There is no charge for borrowing items but the Red Cross invites people to make a donation. To find out more about the Red Cross please visit redcross.org.uk.

£3000 Raised for the Somerset Wildlife Trust The Somerset Wildlife Trust is extremely grateful for the support that was given towards the Plant Sale and Open Garden held at Rookery House, the Causeway, on 2nd May. Once again the magnificent sum of over £3000 was raised and all will be used in Somerset “Protecting Wildlife for the Future” the logo line of the Trust. Thanks go to Lanes, Budgens and Maunders of Cheddar and Somerlap, Mark and many individuals who provided raffle prizes and to everyone who was able to help, either by providing plants and cakes, by assisting in the organisation of the event, on the day and by coming to buy. Over 300 people attended and enjoyed the garden and refreshments. Thanks also to Gill Isgar and Mark and Ricky Popham for the use of the field as the car park - this of course is absolutely essential for this event at this location. This was tabled as the major fund-raising event for the Mendip Hills Area Group of the Somerset Wildlife Trust and this event has achieved that goal.

Advice for animal lovers – and a call for volunteers at Secret World Wildlife Rescue Photo by Jason Bryant

These gorgeous fox cubs are just some of the twenty-five being cared for at Secret World Wildlife Rescue this month. Five of the cubs were found under a shed in Bristol two weeks ago when the homeowner was doing some garden renovations. Unfortunately as the cubs were disturbed, the mother did not return to them, so Secret World decided it was time to step in and rescue the little foxes. If you find an orphaned wild animal and you are in any doubt about what to do, please call us first and we can advise: 01278 783250. The cubs are now doing well and will be released towards the end of the summer when they’re strong enough to thrive on their own. It’s a busy time at Secret World and we are always looking for volunteers to help out with a range of jobs, from fundraising to animal care to rescuing wild animals in distress. Do you want to get involved with a passionate, friendly team and help get animals like these fox cubs back to the wild where they belong? Check our volunteering opportunities at www.secretworld. org/volunteeror or get in touch with Duncan Cousens, Volunteer Coordinator, at: volunteer@ secretworld.org or 01278 783 250.

Five ‘hacks’ to make recycling easy - What works for you: find a routine and stick to it - By Nick Cater When it comes to taking out the recycling and rubbish, there may not be an “app” for that. But there are at least five easy “hacks”, tips or shortcuts that can help LocalReach readers waste less – materials and also their time – recycle more and even save money. Hack #1: Get a system and stick to it. Some like taking bottles and cans, card and paper, out to the recycling boxes each day. Others put all their dry recycling into a single large box and sort that once each week. Discover what works for you, your family and your home, and recycling will be swift and simple. Hack #2: Know what can go into the recycling boxes – and what not – so you make the most of your kerbside collection. In Burnham-on-Sea, that includes aerosols and aluminium foil, as well as clothes, shoes and all textiles that are not stuffed, so curtains, covers, towels and sheets are ok, but not pillows. Hack #3: Sort and segregate materials, get them out by 7am and weigh down boxes in windy weather. This helps ensure no mistakes, makes life a little easier for your collection crew, and stops your recycling becoming a street full of rubbish. Hack #4: If you do not have much dry recycling to put out, skip a week or put it all in one box. If you have a lot, consider dropping it off at Highbridge, Bridgwater, Cheddar or any other recycling site as you go by. Re-use what you can, and add certain foods and shredded cardboard to your compost bin. Hack #5: Between turning leftovers into new meals, taking care with portions, and smart use of fridge and freezer, cut back on costly wasted food. But any and all unavoidable waste must go in the kerbside food container – not the refuse bin – to feed Somerset’s anaerobic digestion plant, rather than filling up landfill. For more ideas about how to make recycling easy, visit: www.somersetwaste.gov.uk. Nick Cater is Senior Communications Officer at Somerset Waste Partnership, which manages waste and recycling services on behalf of all local authorities in Somerset.

The WI in Burnham-on-Sea June sees the official 100th anniversary of the Woman’s Institute. To mark this occasion, Burnham-on-Sea W.I. has an exhibition in the Library window during the whole of June, showing some of the campaigns the W.I. have had over the 100 years. From the beginning, the W.I. has a long history of campaigning on a wide range of issues. W. I. campaigns are about changing things for the better and tackling the issues that matter to members. Members are at the heart of the W.I. and they play a central role in bringing issues onto the W.I's national agenda through our public affairs and campaigning. From equal pay to climate change, from gaps in the midwifery workforce to the plight of the honey bee, W.I. members have embraced a diverse set of challenges and built a reputation for the W.I. as a practical and ambitious organisation. We hope you can get along to the Library to have a look and enjoy our display. This month the afternoon W.I. group meets on Tuesday 23rd June at the Community Centre in Berrow Road from 2pm. Our speaker is Robin Miller and the title of his talk is ‘Laughter, the Best Medicine’. This is a fun mixture of themed verbal whimsies, cartoons and photographic imagery created to tickle the ribs! So come along for a jolly afternoon with a cup of tea and excellent company. Custom Built Computers:

It occurred to me recently that I had not mentioned previously that we assemble our own range of desktop PC computers. Often our customers think that we deal solely with computer problems, but since around 1996 we have been building Windows based computers. The reason for us building our own, rather than buying pre-assembled, is that mass produced computers often contain parts which fulfil the required size, but do not always offer speed and reliability. The problem is that when buying, how do you know if the internal parts are going to be reliable and stay working faster for longer. The amount of memory, the size of the hard disk, or speed processor is the normal indicator, but in many cases this does not give a true indication of computer performance. There is quite a variation in quality of components, so for example, a fairly standard hard drive may actually run a lot slower than a higher specification drive, even though the size of data that they hold are the same. Quite often large manufacturers will buy components in bulk and such equipment may not be as fast or reliable as slightly more expensive branded equivalents. When we assemble custom-built computers, we look at the quality of parts used and do not build in any obsolescence or add any third party software that might slow the machine down. Rather than saving a few pounds by buying the lower end brands, we often aim for the equipment that gives a longer warranty as standard and is also tried and tested. These machines are still very reasonably priced, so it’s worth considering if you intend to change your computer. We can also help with the transfer of data and setup, to make your life easier. If you think you would be interested in a custom built system, please call Neil on 07973 536299 or email sales@e-cps.co.uk. The dreaded IT support phone call: Recently there has been a huge surge in the people receiving a scam IT support phone call. Please remember that nobody genuine will ever call to say that your computer has a virus/problem. Should you receive such a call, please just put the phone down. The latest scam involves convincing the customer that their computer is at risk, then accessing it remotely. Should the “ransom” not be paid, these individuals will put the computer into a permanent “safe-mode” state which renders the machine pretty much useless. If you have suffered such a phone call and are worried that your computer is compromised, please get in touch. Neil Buzzard, Director, Computer Problem Solutions Ltd

Training for Volunteers Somerset Sight is the independent charity which has been providing support and advice to sight impaired people across Somerset since 1919. Following the Care Act which came into effect on 1st April it is now training all its 160 volunteer visitors on Safeguarding procedures. The volunteer visitors visit people at home or in care homes, for company and support related to their sight loss, in Sedgemoor and across the County of Somerset. The training for the Sedgemoor area took place on 29th April at the Admiral’s Landing in Bridgwater and was run by Saskia Pearlstone, Somerset Sight’s training officer. Kathryn, a volunteer visitor who lives in Sedgemoor, said afterwards, “I visit a gentleman who is completely blind, he also has substantial hearing loss, I go to him for company and to go out walking with him. I found this a very lively and informative session which outlined the many issues involved in visiting and was very helpful in clarifying my role and responsibilities as a volunteer visitor.” Pictured, are the volunteer visitors with Saskia Pearlstone after the training. If you would like to know more, please contact Gloria Williams at Somerset Sight’s main office on 01823 366146 or email Gloria@somersetsight.org.uk.

Sedgemoor Citizens’ Advice Bureau Sedgemoor Citizens’ Advice Bureau is seeking volunteers to join its team. Every year Sedgemoor Citizens’ Advice Bureau helps about 5000 people who are experiencing problems in their lives. These problems may be about debt, employment, relationships, benefits, housing, consumer matters, utilities or a combination of these, or other issues. The need for the Bureau’s services continues to grow year on year and the present economic austerity has produced a sharp increase in demand. Often, but not always, our clients are people who find dealing with officialdom and documentation a challenge and need help to resolve issues and negotiate with large organisations. To continue to provide our service to the people of Sedgemoor, we need to recruit volunteers with a wide range of skills. Whilst we are always looking for new advisers, we also need administration staff, trustees (the Bureau is a registered Charity) and social policy workers. If you have a keen interest in helping your fellow citizens through one of these roles, please do get in touch by ringing 01278 459009. No special skills are needed as there is thorough training for all roles. You are assured of a warm welcome. Sedgemoor Citizens’ Advice Bureau, Royal Clarence House, High Street, Bridgwater, TA6 3BH

Burnham and Beyond

As part of the Geography department in King Alfred School, Highbridge, students from years 7 and 10 have been displaying their views on the local Neighbourhood planning project, a new way for communities to decide the future of the places where they live. Many have been doing this through presentations, maps and images as well as ideas of where the money should be spent. The challenge was set by local councillor Phil Harvey but some of the students have taken it a step further and produced a new local youth website where the public’s ideas and theirs can be shared. Abby Addison and Olivia Cox in year 10 set to work building the website formed with word documents and links in order to showcase their ideas on possible community projects, events and improvements to the town. The public are being encouraged to look at the website and email their own views, which could be displayed. The website is currently under construction with the team of two, but to take a look please visit www.Burnhamandbeyond@weebly.com and if you would like to post your opinions, email in at Burnhamandbeyond@gmail.com - we would really appreciate your comments.

When Life hands you a lemon …… by Rev. Kelton Black Many years ago I remember hearing the saying “When life hands you a lemon…make lemonade.” It was meant to be an encouragement to make the most of things when tough times come in life. For the past nine months I have been learning what it means to face tough times. I faced the stark fact that I had cancer. It’s been a very sobering journey. It was a real test on my faith. Since my teenage years I have been a devote believer in Jesus Christ. Many ask the question “Well, how has this affected your faith?” Yes, I could have questioned this, “Why is this happening to me? I have committed my life to serve God in every way I can, so how can God allow this to happen to me.” Instead my faith is stronger with the conclusion that, yes, God has allowed this, not as punishment, but as an expression of God’s confidence in me to be able to handle this. Doctors are confident that surgery has been successful, therefore, I know I am one of the fortunate ones who has survived this. I have learnt much about myself. I know now, I am not afraid to die, but I am more convinced than ever I have much still left to do with my life, as a husband, as a father and as a grandfather. I appreciate the strength I get from my prayers and prayers of others. I say a big thank you to all who have shown me, and my family, love and support through this testing time.

Local Hero Awards 2015 The Burnham-on-Sea Food & Drink Festival today announced the two winners of their Local Hero Awards for 2015. Festival Director Beverley Milner Simonds told us, "We created these awards to celebrate the traders who we feel have backed the festival, a drive for their businesses and deserve some public recognition for their hard work and commitment." Fellow Director Sarah Milner Simonds added, "We are looking forward to welcoming these traders and 90 others to the festival on Saturday 23rd May - we hope you agree that we have brought the best of Somerset into the town for the day." Berrow Beef A commitment to sourcing and producing authentic and delicious food rooted in the local terroir. Leggland's Orchards An unparalleled provenance and attention to detail to create a great range of Somerset products. Sarah Welland of Berrow Beef "We are thrilled to be awarded Local Food Hero 2015 by our local food festival. It's a real honour to be recognised by others; when we are so proud ourselves of providing top quality, grass fed, native breed beef to the local market, at an affordable price. I also know there are a lot of other excellent food and drink producers locally, so for us to be recognised with this award is fantastic - thank you." Louise Perrin of Leggland's Orchards "We’re thrilled to receive this award – genuinely unexpected. We’ve worked hard to develop a range of traditional and contemporary handmade preserves and this acknowledgement encourages us to continue and come up with fresh ideas. People always ask us if we make it all ourselves. Of course we do! And they want to know where we source the ingredients – in most cases we can show you the tree or bushes. We always get a buzz at the Burnham-on-Sea Food Festival. It’s the best organised food event we attend. This is our third year now and an established date in our diary. Thank you Beverley and Sarah and all the customers who support us."

CADS (Cultural Arts Development Society) Following on from the popular Party in the Park in May, Jazz in the Park will take place on Sunday 7th June, and Picnic in the Park Sunday 12th July. The date for our August event in Highbridge is yet to be confirmed. The Cultural Arts Development Society (CADS) was formed in 1996 to increase community exposure to cultural events. A programme of free music events is produced each year, with the addition of artistic and craft experiences, and occasional theatre events. These are open to residents and visitors, with complete access to wheelchair users and less able members of the community. Where possible CADS also lends support to other cultural groups and activities. This year for example they supported the Princess Theatre Group. These events are funded by bar sales, raffles, etc. and supporting traders. Chairman Mike Murphy said, “2015 will be our nineteenth year of events, and I am delighted by the continued support from residents and visitors alike and the volunteer team who help to make these events such a success. CADS is also extremely grateful for the continued support from the Town Council and occasionally Sedgemoor District Council.

Dick Whittington coming to Brean 2016 Coastline Players have announced that they will be performing the hilarious and very traditional pantomime Dick Whittington in February next year. Coastline Players will be holding a readthrough of the pantomime on Tuesday 2nd June at 7.30pm at the Brean Village Hall, where the production will take place. We welcome anyone who wishes to join this friendly bunch of people. Even if you don't wish to be on the stage there are plenty of jobs to do backstage, whether it be sewing, painting/making scenery, making props, helping backstage, doing make-up or even if you can make a cup of tea - it all helps towards putting the show on. If you are interested in joining Coastline Players, please contact Greg Fear, the pantomime's director on 01278 783045 or by emailing greg_fear1@hotmail.com.

Gardening Jobs for JUNE Keep hoeing those weeds! Hopefully the late frosts will be gone now, so all tender plants can be planted out. Remember to water plants well before planting. Lift spring bulbs when leaves are yellow and leave the bulbs in a dry, airy place. Sow biennials like wallflowers and sweet williams in a prepared seedbed. Clip hedges, dead-head roses and prune early flowering clematis. Mow lawns as often as you can. Keep picking peas and broad beans when

they are young and fresh. After the "June Drop" of apples, plums and pears, assess whether the remaining fruit needs any further thinning to prevent the tree producing lots of small fruits. Protect strawberries from birds and pick fruit regularly. Keep sowing small numbers of lettuce, carrot , beetroot and spinach. Make sure you have sown all your winter vegetables. Water and feed everything when necessary.

For more tips, why not join your local gardening group? The Burnham and District Horticultural Society meet at 7.30pm on the third Monday of each month (except December) at the Community Centre, Berrow Road. Now is a good time to join. The next meeting is on Monday 18th June, with a talk from gardeners Pauline and David Wright called “Lift the Latch”. All welcome. Members of the Society free, visitors £1.50.

Donkeys Return to Burnham Beach Sedgemoor District Council is delighted to announce that following a very short break, the traditional seaside attraction of donkey rides will be returning to Burnham-on-Sea beach. When the previous operator had their licence terminated at the end of last season, the prospect of donkeys returning looked bleak. However, two Burnham residents, Kathy Jones and Lindsey Ripley, alerted the Vincent Family to the availability of the concession, and Sedgemoor moved quickly to follow-up their interest. A Sedgemoor District Council spokeswoman said, “It is great news that the public will once again be able to enjoy the prospect of the likes of Dusty, Princess, Charlie and Millie strutting their stuff on the golden sands of Burnham beach. Donkey rides will be available through to the end of the summer season.”

Burnham-on-Sea camera club announces its seventh annual exhibition This year’s annual photography exhibition is to be held at the Baptist Church in College Street, Burnham-on-Sea. On display will be a selection of photographs by camera club members, and the Baptist kitchen counter will be open for teas, coffees and biscuits. This is an ideal chance to catch up with the latest photographic trends, and discuss the images on display. It is the person behind the lens who takes the photograph, and the club caters for all needs, from beginners to rising and top professionals. Camera club chair Mike Barnard says, “We are a sociable club, and the mix of professional images and emerging talent is well known, so come along and meet us.” The exhibition is open to the public on Saturday 13th June, starting at 10am. We anticipate carrying on until 3pm, but that depends largely on how busy we are. Please note the free admission and easy access within the town.
