Belles of Burnham WI Why not come along to this new evening WI group meeting at the Avenue Lawn Tennis Club, The Grove, Burnham-on-Sea? The group are meeting on the first Tuesday in the month, with the next being Tuesday 3rd March at 7.30pm. The March meeting will welcome Sharon from Organic Rhythm who will be getting us all drumming during the evening. There is a busy programme of activities being produced, to be published at a later date, after receiving lots of good ideas from the members, from gardening to cinema trips, theatre to spa days! Princess Theatre and Arts Centre - A Midsummer Night’s Dream Have you ever thought about being involved in a drama production, fancy performing in front of an audience or interacting with the crowds, or is backstage support more your type of thing? Somerset Wildlife Trust The Somerset Wildlife Trust will be repeating the successful plant sale and open garden at Rookery House, The Causeway, Mark on the B3139. The Highbridge Festival of the Arts We shall be opening the Festival at the Princess Theatre on Thursday 5th March. The Festival will run from the Princess Theatre and Arts centre, Burnham-on-Sea between Thursday 5th and Sunday 8th March, for Dance. The Speech and Drama will take place on Monday 9th and Tuesday 10th March. Music categories are being held between Tuesday 10th March and Saturday 14th March at the Highbridge Community Hall and St. Andrew’s Church – Burnham-on-Sea. How about volunteering for our charity Somerset Sight in 2015? We are looking for volunteers to join our visiting service in the Burnham-on-Sea area, to visit blind and visually impaired people at home or in care homes. As a volunteer visitor you would be matched up with a local person in order to visit them once a week or fortnight for a couple of hours, to offer companionship and practical support, or perhaps to go out together for an appointment or some shopping. You will receive training from us on working with people with sight loss, and reimbursement of your expenses, as well as a sense of satisfaction in helping someone who needs support. Many of our 150 volunteers say that they enjoy visiting, as much as the person they go to see enjoys the visit! West Huntspill Players At the recent AGM, June Jenkins accepted the role of Chairperson, keen to take the club forward and encourage new members to join. GARDENING JOBS FOR MARCH Prune roses stems back to an outward facing bud which is pointing in the direction you want the plant to grow. I also remove all new growth and leave the bush completely bare. This will result in a clean plant which will help with black spot prevention. Prune out and remove dead, diseased and crossing branches from trees and shrubs. Start feeding your plants regularly when the clocks change at the end of the month. After mid-March when light levels and daylight lengths improve, consider sowing vegetables for an early crop. Bear in mind that most seeds will not germinate until the actual soil temperature

is 6 degrees C or above. Many people use a special soil thermometer to measure this. Another indication is when weeds start to germinate in the soil. Once you spot this happening you can consider sowing seeds outside. Modern seed packs give good advice on when and how their contents should be sown, but remember this is only a guide. Continue sowing and growing on plants that need protection inside. Remember, ventilation is very important, particularly on sunny days. Try dragging a single sheet of newspaper gently across your seedlings every morning. This simple action strengthens the plants and prepares them for outside planting later on.

Burnham-on-Sea WI The March meeting for the Burnham-on-Sea WI is on Tuesday 24th at 2pm at the Community Centre, Berrow Road. Our speaker is Sarah Harris who will be telling us about the history of spinning. All are welcome to come along. To continue on last month’s edition with the history of the WI to commemorate the centenary: Between 1930 – 1938 Resolutions passed included improved water supplies in villages. Requesting better medical supervision of pregnant women in rural areas. All WI members to support local efforts to deal with unemployment among men and women. The NFWI held WI War Week, when plans were made to organise evacuation at the time of the Munich crisis. The number of WIs had now reached 5111. Following on from this between 1939 – 1945, The Produce Guild was formed to encourage more home-grown food and to preserve more fruit and vegetables. WIs helped with evacuation scheme. The Ministry of Food allocated sugar to the WI Preservation Centres in order to make jam and can produce which would otherwise go to waste. All the produce went into the nation's food supply. The NFWI published a report, Town Children through Country Eyes. This stimulated a national debate about support for families, ultimately leading to the setting up of family allowances after the war. The NFWI agreed to support Mrs Churchill's Aid to Russia Fur Scheme; members made coats, waistcoats, hoods and caps lined with rabbit fur. Members reared the rabbits and cured the pelts. During two and a half years of work, 2071 fur lined garments were sent to Russia. The first AGM since 1939 was held; resolutions included urging the Government that equal facilities for full education at all levels should be provided in town and country and a demand that men and women should receive equal pay for equal work. By 1945 there were 6033 WIs, and Operation Produce was launched to encourage WI members to grow more food in their gardens. Rural midwives were allowed to use analgesics, something for which the WI had campaigned. 8

Spring is in the Air at The Walled Gardens of Cannington You can’t help noticing the abundance of lambs springing around the local fields lately, and with Lambing Fun Day on the 8th March and The Walled Gardens of Cannington beginning to bloom, it seems that spring might finally be arriving! There is free entry to the Gardens on the 8th, if you’ve bought a Lambing Fun Day ticket, and it’s a great chance to see what the Gardens have to offer. Students, volunteers and staff were busy in the autumn planting thousands of bulbs, and the seasonal annual displays will bring some vibrancy and colour back into the landscape. Saturday 7th March sees the beginning of weekend opening for the spring/summer season (10.30am – 2.30pm), and for mothers visiting on Sunday 15th (Mothering Sunday), there will be a special free gift (whilst stocks last). With over 8,000 new bedding plants and bulbs coming into flower just in time for Easter, Easter weekend is also a perfect time to admire the beauty of the Gardens – there might even be a chocolate egg or two to find! The Gardens have always played an important part in the life of the local community, and since becoming part of Bridgwater College, have seen significant development, being officially opened by HRH the Earl of Wessex, Prince Edward. The Gardens have achieved the accreditation of Quality Assured Visitor Attraction from VisitEngland and are a horticulturalist’s delight. They have received some wonderful reviews on TripAdvisor, and are popular with all age of visitors. As well as the Gardens, there’s also the Tea Room to enjoy, and the Plant and Gift Shops for that perfect purchase! So even if you’ve visited the Gardens before, there’s plenty to see and enjoy, and many events taking place throughout the year. During event weekends, normal entry fees apply (from £2.95, children free). Entry to the Gardens not needed for Tea Room, Plant Shop or Gift shop.

Pick your packaging with care Wrap it up: as we choose and consume, we are what we waste By Nick Cater How many people in Burnham-on-Sea have a refuse bin full of plastic packaging and beverage cartons while their recycling boxes overflow with cardboard? Packaging can be the boon or bane of our lives, from carefully preserving food and protecting what we value, to generating wasteful piles of paper, card and plastic. Amid plenty of packaging complaints, many food and consumer goods firms are working hard to cut back, if only to cut down manufacturing and transport costs. So between the packaging we actually need and the efforts of producer companies, what responsibility should consumers - all of us - accept? Perhaps it is less the packaging that is at fault and more the way we shop and buy, choose and consume, that leaves us with cardboard and plastic mountains. For every over-packaged item, there is often an alternative, from the simplicity and often cheaper prices of a grocer’s loose fruit and veg through to ensuring that the white goods delivery people take back and recycle the box and everything else. And for every piece of packaging not recycled at the kerbside, there may be a better option, such as substituting glass, cans or plastic bottles for the beverage cartons that, so far, can only be taken to 12 recycling sites, including Highbridge. Those who find few alternatives to soya, almond or rice milk from a box of layered polyethylene, paper, adhesive and aluminium, could save plenty and eliminate packaging by using their blender to make what they need when they need it. And with Easter looming, can we resist the boxed chocolate eggs that are mainly air, cardboard, plastic, and yet another mug we do not need? As we reach for an item in a shop, packaging perspective could usefully remind us that except for food and drink, almost everything we buy and bring into our homes and its wrapping - has sooner or later to leave via refuse bin or recycling box. Burnham District Pantomime Society The Adventures of Sinbad has come and gone and we had a happy run despite our earlier set back of losing our usual sound and lighting team due to pressure of work commitments. I am pleased to say that we had help from Graham Cooke supplier of equipment, Clive Bond (Coastline), Jan Newton (BEES), and Mandy Williams - one of our own who had never worked a sound board before, but proved a quick learner. They all willingly stepped into the breach and did a brilliant job. The society thank you very much. It shows there is a lot of goodwill between local societies which is great. A big thank you has to go to all the Panto team - without you all it wouldn’t happen; you all played important roles in bringing this year’s panto to our local audiences, and those I spoke to thoroughly enjoyed it, especially the children. One comment that I found particularly heartening said: “We clapped, we sang , we booed and shouted, we waved our hands in the air and thoroughly enjoyed it.” And that’s what matters to us, that the audience enjoys it and finds it worth the price of the ticket. Special thanks go to Director Lorna Blair for bringing the whole show together, and her time and patience at rehearsals, also to our supporters, advertisers, helpers and to you our local audiences. We did however have lower numbers at each performance this year and I am not sure why. What’s On in East Huntspill The East Huntspill Flower Show is on Saturday 1st August in a new venue - the East Huntspill Church Hall - for vegetables, flowers, craft etc., and All Saints Church for Floral Art, Art and Children's classes. Will you be able to vote on Election Day? Thursday May 7th 2015 will see voters going to the polls to have their say on who will be Prime Minister for the next five years. In Sedgemoor, we also have District Council Elections and Parish Council Elections. Hundreds of people in Sedgemoor could miss their chance to vote in local elections this May if they don’t take action now, Chris Facey, Electoral Services Manager has warned. Each household will shortly be receiving a household notification letter with information about who is registered at the household. This reminder has been paid for by the Electoral Commission. “Anyone who has moved house in the past few months needs to register with their new address and Sedgemoor are also keen for anyone turning 18 on or before 7th May to make sure they are registered, so they can vote for the first time.” The deadline to register is Monday 20th April. Chris Sperring Talk at Berrow Conservation Group Berrow Conservation Group welcomes back Chris Sperring MBE, naturalist and broadcaster, on Thursday 19th March at 7.30pm, to Berrow Village Hall. This time, as Conservation Officer for the Hawk and Owl Trust, he is going to talk about big efforts being made to ensure the Barn Owl remains as a glorious sight to see in Somerset, while recalling the ups and downs, and yet more ups and downs, of the progress of the Barn Owl's survival over recent months. He will also be promoting the latest Community Owls Project launched in January 2015, the aim to provide more nest boxes for these wonderful birds. He may well be accompanied by one of his owl ambassadors. All are welcome. There will be an entry fee of £3 for visitors to help cover costs, refreshments included.

Sedgemoor Citizens’ Advice Bureau is a Campaigning Force Sedgemoor Citizens’ Advice Bureau is well known in the area for offering free confidential and impartial advice. But we do more than that. We can see from our records what is worrying local people, and the two top subjects are debt and benefits. For example, we know that ten people came for food parcels in the week before Christmas. From this understanding, we campaign to make things better. Last year we campaigned with others against Payday Loans – and it was a very effective campaign. This year our top campaign is about Scams. We want people to be aware – so they aren’t hurt by them. Online scams, telephone scams, doorstep calls. The South West is a hotspot for scams and the highly sought after “Suckers List” contains plenty of local names. We Tweet, Blog, and bother anyone who will listen. At the moment we are talking to the local candidates for the coming Parliamentary Election. You are welcome to come to us for advice. You might also like to help, maybe as a volunteer adviser (which is good for your CV!), or help us campaign about the things that bother the people in Sedgemoor.

Sedgemoor Ramblers With Spring approaching and flowers appearing, we are planning a variety of walks throughout March, including a leisurely canal walk along the Bridgwater and Taunton canal, meadows and valleys on the Mendips, and coastal views from Porlock. We aim to provide walks to suit all abilities and offer a variety of scenery. Speed cameras across Avon and Somerset will start to be switched back on It marks the beginning of a road safety project that will see a total of 29 static cameras become operational again for the first time since 2011. They were switched off when Government funding was withdrawn for the joint local authority and police Safety Camera Partnership. Avon and Somerset Police’s Road Safety Superintendent Richard Corrigan said: “Our message is loud and clear – drivers should assume that all roadside fixed cameras are now operational and to drive accordingly. Drivers who choose to exceed the speed limit can expect to be caught and prosecuted if you exceed the legal speed limit.” The cameras will be switched back on in a phased programme, exact dates yet to be confirmed, over the coming weeks and months. Revenue raised from them will be used to fund their maintenance and enforcement. Supt Corrigan said: “The ongoing work we have undertaken with our partners to reinstate static speed cameras in the force area is based on national research showing that cameras add value to road safety. 27% of priority issues raised with the police relate to speeding vehicles in our communities. Also, there was camera infrastructure worth more than two million pounds lying dormant on the roadsides in the force area. We believe that the static cameras can be operated in a cost-neutral way and that reactivating them for use alongside our mobile camera vans will help in making our roads safer.” Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Mountstevens said: “This is a positive move which will improve the safety of roads across Avon and Somerset. I know from speaking to people how important road safety is to them and many have been pressing to have the cameras in their communities turned back on as soon as possible. I’m pleased that I can now tell them they are back on. Static cameras will complement the work of the mobile speed enforcement vans and motorbikes that already work across Avon and Somerset and together they send a powerful message to drivers that speeding is being taken seriously.”

Ways to speed up your computer / internet connection. Often when fixing computer issues, customers mention that their computer is slow. I then enquire if they mean a particular part of the computer, such as starting up, surfing the Internet, or just slow in general. Quite often slowness issues are due to factors such as over-sized or too much anti-virus software, sheer amount of data on the computer, or lack of power. One example is the amount of speed/clean up utilities, anti-virus programs and the like. Sometimes people will be running 3 or more different programs that claim to improve system performance, but often slowness can be attributed to this software conflicting with each other and therefore slowing the system down. There are also many pieces of software which may have been good a few years ago, but these days have little or no effecting on system performance or wellbeing. If your computer is slow, one way of speeding it up would be adding memory chips. These are relatively cheap to buy and can give a huge speed improvement on any computer. I recommend at least 4gb of Ram when possible. Some computers may take more or less than 4gb, but this is a rough guide. For example, if you have 2gb of ram, you could add 2gb or 4gb and this would give an improvement. Another factor which is worth looking at is internet speed – many parts of Burnham & Highbridge (and out outlying villages) can get fibre broadband – with some very good deals available at the moment. Please see our advert below should you require any help speeding up your machine or getting a better internet service. Please also stay vigilant regarding all the scams that are around at the moment. The phone calls keep coming from fake IT companies advising people that they have a problem with their computer. Although I mention this type of scam almost on a monthly basis in the column, I still receive worried phone calls from many local residents that they have succumbed to one scam or another, and ended up paying for a false service. Just remember that nobody from Microsoft or any other IT/ phone company will cold call you about problems with your own computer. As plausible as it may sound, you should ask for anything in writing on headed paper. If you are in any doubt about something being genuine, please check with a friend, relative or myself. Burnham-on-Sea Farmers’ Market: Peter Nutt of ‘Nutts For…’ Nutts For… scotch eggs, only in its fourth month, has rapidly become a very popular addition to Burnham Farmers’ Market. Peter has been selling out all of his produce well before the end of the day to enthusiastic food lovers. Peter’s business was created by a happy accident. He tells the story: “I’m a trained cook and was offered some sausage meat by my local butcher to try. I decided to experiment in my kitchen for fun. I was able to get the first dozen I produced into a local pub and they sold more or less straight away as bar snacks to regulars, then another dozen, then 20 and 30 and so on.” Word spread quickly to other food establishments but it was on the recommendation of artisan bakers Sally and Graham Hill of Hills Bakery that Peter decided to give the farmers’ markets a try. Nutts For… now trade every month at Burnham Market and offer a mouth-watering range of 12 varieties of scotch eggs with a difference, from traditional Cumberland sausage meat to amazing creations using smoked salmon, cream cheese and dill. All of the scotch eggs are made, as far as possible, with free range, locally sourced ingredients. Do make sure you get to the market in good time to have the pick of the range.
