CADS (Cultural Arts Development Society) The first of this summer’s free music events from CADS (Party in the Park) takes place on Sunday 10 May from 12 noon in the Manor Gardens. Acts booked to date include Maya Rose (girl with a guitar), Corin and Abi (Burnham’s Got Talent Winners), the Phil King band, and ever popular Lipinski Brothers band. This will be followed by Jazz in the Park on Sunday 7th June and Picnic in the Park on 12th July. Our August event in Highbridge is yet to be confirmed. The Cultural Arts Development Society (CADS) was formed in 1996 to increase community exposure to cultural events. A programme of free music events is produced each year, with additional artistic and craft experiences, and occasional theatre events. These are open to residents and visitors with complete access to wheelchair users and less able members of the community. Where possible CADS also lends support to other cultural groups and activities. This year they supported the Princess Theatre Group. These events are funded by bar sales, raffles, etc. and supporting traders. Chairman Mike Murphy said: “2015 will be our nineteenth year of events, and I am delighted by the continued support from residents and visitors alike and the volunteer team who help to make these events such a success. CADS is also extremely grateful for the support from the Town Council and occasionally Sedgemoor District Council”.

Dick Whittington coming to Brean 2016 Coastline Players will be performing the hilarious and very traditional pantomime Dick Whittington in February next year. With cats and rats, to sailors and some very funny characters, this promises to be a very fun pantomime. Coastline Players will be holding the read-through of the pantomime on Tuesday 2nd June at 7.30pm at Brean Village Hall, where the production will take place. We welcome anyone who wishes to join this friendly bunch of people. Even if you don't wish to be on the stage, there are plenty of jobs to do backstage, whether it be sewing, painting/making scenery, making props, helping backstage, doing make-up, or even if you can make a cup of tea - it all helps towards putting the show on. If you are interested in joining Coastline Players please contact Greg Fear, the pantomime's director on 01278 783045 or by emailing greg_fear1@hotmail.com.

Secret World Wildlife Baby Boom Time! As April comes to an end and May begins, springtime takes firm control of all that nature brings us. Our trees are full of buds, flowers begin to bloom and, of course, it is a boom time for babies amongst our native animal and bird life. This heralds the busiest time of year for Secret World Wildlife Rescue as we see a seasonal increase in the number of young animals being brought to us either as orphans or through having incurred injuries of some kind. The charity will particularly see an increase in the number of baby birds and fledglings needing care over the coming few weeks. To celebrate this wonderful time of year, Secret World will hold special wildlife open days over the late May bank holiday weekend. Our Wildlife Babies event will take place from Saturday 23rd May through to Monday 25th May and the centre will be open to the public from 10am to 4pm each day. There will be special talks and activities daily, featuring our fabulous British wildlife along with lots of other fun and entertainment for all the family. Entry to the event is free of charge, but we do ask that visitors give a donation in lieu of admission. Every day is different here at Secret World and we never know what wildlife will be brought in to us from one day to the next. We will continue with our aim to rescue, rehabilitate and release British wildlife and thank our local community for all the support they give us. Secret World Wildlife Rescue, New Road, East Huntspill, Highbridge TA9 3PZ – tel. 01278 783250, email info@secretworld.org www.secretworld.org. Secret World Wildlife Rescue is a charity run purely on donations. A company limited by guarantee, registered in England & Wales. Company number 4672215 and charity number 1097119.

We aim to provide walks to suit all abilities and offer a variety of scenery. Discover a World of Possibilities! It’s that time of year, when colleges across the country are publishing their prospectuses for adult learners, detailing the courses and activities available in their area. The Bridgwater College Adult Skills and Training Guide 2015/16 will be hitting the streets (and your doormats), during May, just in time for you to take a look through to decide what you’d like to do, and to go along to the College’s open event on Wednesday 3 June, in order to find out more and to book your place! Studying an adult course at Bridgwater College gives you the opportunity to gain a new qualification, change your career path, increase your earning potential, or, on a personal level, increase your self-esteem, meet new people or learn a new skill. The College offers courses where no prior qualifications or experience is necessary, through to postgraduate Level 7 courses. If you are aged 24 or over, did you know you can get a loan to help fund your studies? The Government has introduced Advanced Learning Loans for anyone aged 24 or over and starting a course at Level 3 and 4 (exceptions apply). The loans are designed to support learners with their course fees in a similar way to how students studying university level courses receive a higher education loan. You can find information about these loans and all the different courses available, on the College’s website. For some courses can apply online. If there is something not listed in the new Guide or on the website which you are interested in doing, you can get in touch with the College to discuss your requirements. Mobile microcosm of our ‘buy, buy’ lives Phone home: fads fuel a techno-treadmill of ever-upgraded electronics By Nick Cater Anyone remember what the advertising slogan "one instinctively knows when something is right" was selling? Me neither, but one also knows when something is wrong, so it was not hard to refuse the offer of a basic but brand new any-sim mobile phone for a quid, even though it was from a reputable firm found on Somerset’s high streets. The salesman's patter was an irritating reminder that as well as the one in my pocket, I already have several old phones lurking in drawers, all broken or bereft of battery, charger or those exciting extras that become essentials. Each phone contains complex materials flown half way round the world to our door, usually complete with a dab or two of copper, gold, lead, nickel, antimony, beryllium, tantalum, mercury, arsenic and coltan. Being thrifty – AKA cheap – my old phones are not worth selling so I must remember to donate them to charity for recycling. Or drop them off the next time I am passing the recycling sites at Highbridge, Bridgwater or Cheddar so such chemical cocktails avoid the rubbish bin and landfill. Between prices too low to cover their true lifetime cost, including disposal, recycling or environmental damage, and our commercially-inspired obsession with the new, far too many of us clearly have far too much stuff. Fashion and technological progress seems to have handcuffed us to a consumerist treadmill, from those ubiquitous phones and gizmos of all sorts, to CDs, DVDs, clothes, shoes and more. Exhorted by the blether merchants of advertising to buy, buy, buy, it is perhaps a wonder Burnhamon-Sea’s residents only produce about a tonne of waste every year, half of which they manage to recycle. If slimming rubbish bins by filling kerbside recycling boxes seems hard, how will we cut back the remaining rubbish that cannot yet be economically recycled? And when will we be ready for the ultimate challenge: shopping smarter, buying better and consuming less to limit our personal waste? Nick Cater is Senior Communications Officer at Somerset Waste Partnership, which manages waste and recycling services on behalf of all local authorities in Somerset. www.somersetwaste.gov.uk.

Most Thursdays from the 16th April, Art Tutor Ade Bowen is inviting you to come along and try something creative. There are workshops with different themes available to try out, with all the equipment you need provided. All you need to do is turn up and be inspired! Ade hopes these workshops will encourage more people to get their pencils and paint brushes out this summer and be creative. “I have put together a programme of topics that have been popular in my weekly classes and made them available to people who maybe cannot commit to a longer course.” These ‘bite sized’ workshops are all part of the Learn 2015 Challenge that Somerset Skills & Learning are promoting this year. They are challenging you to challenge yourself and develop a new skill this year. There are thirteen different topics, include painting fairies, the Burnham Lighthouse, animals and botanical painting. Media being used involves acrylics, charcoal, colour pencils, pastels, watercolour and watercolour pencils, and prices start from £15. There is a family workshop on Sunday 17th June; there is a Frozen themed morning of fun with Queen Elsa! So enrol on something today and get creative this summer. The WI in Burnham-on-Sea Afternoon group - our May meeting is our AGM on Tuesday 26th May at 2pm in the Community Centre. Contact The President, Brenda Adams on 01278 781771 or visit www.burnhamwi.btck.co.uk. At many WI meetings and AGMs, Jerusalem is sung. It was first sung at the 8th Annual General Meeting at Queen's Hall, London in 1924. The decision to choose Jerusalem came as a result of a letter to Home and Country from Vice Chairman Grace Hadow suggesting its use. Members wrote in favour of this suggestion. Mr Leslie of Llansantffraid, an amateur musician, persuaded Sir Walford Davies, a personal friend and composer, to make a special arrangement for a string orchestra for the 8th AGM, which he himself conducted the singing, bringing a choir from local WIs with him. With Mr Leslie's help, the NFWI brought out the first Women's Institute Song Book - a collection of songs particularly suitable for singing at monthly meetings. Jerusalem was sung at the AGM. The NFWI ran a competition for an 'Institute song', hoping that it might produce a good but unknown poet. Many poems were sent in but nothing suitable was found; it was after receiving a verse which began, 'We are a band of earnest women', that Grace Hadow suggested Jerusalem should become the WI song. Jerusalem had been used by the National Union of Suffrage Societies in the 1918 celebrations of women's enfranchisement and many of the leaders of the NFWI, including Grace Hadow, had been part of that struggle to win the vote for women. Millicent Fawcett, the leader of the suffragists, wrote to Hubert Parry, the composer, 'Your Jerusalem ought to be made the women voters' hymn', which of course in a way it was, being adopted by the WI. If you are unable to make the afternoon WI, consider joining Belles of Burnham which meets on the first Tuesday in the month at the Avenue Tennis Club at 7.30pm. Our speaker for May 5th is Myra Cox and will be running a floral demo called Flowers for the Home. All are welcome, members free – visitors £2.50. Windows 10 – for free (later this year) For the first time, it appears that Microsoft will be offering their latest version of Windows for free to all customers that have Windows 7 or Windows 8. Windows 10 is due out later this year and having listened to customer feedback, it promised that be the best Windows yet. Apple have been releasing free updates to their operating system software for some time, so Microsoft who are keen not to alienate any of their customer base are going to do the same. Recent news articles have suggested that Windows 10 may be out as early as late July, but I suspect that it could be anytime between then and September. Please watch this space and I will update you once I know more. Update on Fibre Broadband. It would seem that most of Burnham, Berrow and Highbridge is now covered for fibre broadband. Recently Worston Road has been enabled but still Rosetree Paddock is not fully covered, even though this was expected to be enabled last year. There are still pockets of the area with no fibre coverage. I would advise using the BT address checker to see if fibre is available. http://dslchecker.bt.com/adsl/ADSLChecker.address I am still very unhappy about fibre broadband self-install, essentially where the router is fitted by the customer. In my view, it is best to ask for an Openreach engineer to come and install the equipment, as often they will make changes to the internal phone socket to ensure that all is well. In some cases, customers say to me that they don’t find fibre much faster than their previous broadband, but in all cases, the problem is due to the equipment not being fitted correctly such as on a long extension cable, or the wireless channel being incompatible with the computer/tablet. Had your computer checked recently by a professional? Many people have not had their computer or internet checked by a professional to make sure that all is working as it should be. If you feel that you would benefit from an experienced engineer visiting you and making sure that all is as it should be, please see contact me on 07973 536299 or e-mail sales@e-cps.co.uk Our main advert is below to give you some idea of what we offer. ‘Thoughts from a Lent reflection' As someone who retired a couple of years ago, I have now got used to not going to work and am lucky enough to be able to enjoy my retirement. The change International Key Account Manager to the old fart shuffling along to get a newspaper was initially quite difficult, emotionally and in terms of self-awareness. I have now accepted that I am a 'pensioner'. Through Lent I often found myself thinking about the time I have left and what best to do with it. The word ‘pensioner’ brings with it many things, the sense of my own mortality, also as an assistant Chaplain at St. Margaret's Hospice, there comes a strong emotion of wanting to be ready when my time comes to face my Lord. I know that I am loved and that He knows me through and through. Like most people of my age, I also know myself quite well and I have to be honest enough to say that there are things that I do not always like. My modesty and good looks, are not, fortunately, causes of great concern. Aren’t I the lucky one? But my bad habits are legion. Most of them are just part of what makes me. Some though are frustratingly upsetting. I have a distinct lack of patience at times. Those who know me may have noticed. I know that nerves can cause me to be flippant when serious is what is required. Worst of all, though, is that I sense that I rarely ‘love’ myself. But I also know that God has a sense of humour – so the biggest effort I tried to make throughout Lent was to stop putting down something God has made and to try and accept it, just as God does and to learn to love and respect it. This is something we all need to do. So spend a few minutes reflecting on the love that you have and share - the good things you do - the compassion you have for others. Finally, just reflect on how loved and valued you are by God and his communion of Saints. You matter and can make a difference.

Civil Service Retirement Fellowship Our next regular monthly meeting is on Tuesday 26th May. The venue will be the site office in Apex Park from 10.30am to 12pm. Any local members who would like to join in are welcome to come along. Details of venue and further information from Mrs Linda Trebble on 01278 782751.

GARDENING JOBS FOR MAY Continue to hoe weeds regularly, taking care not to damage the shallow roots and stems of cultivated plants. Pull up spring bedding plants like forget-me-nots and wallflowers when they have finished flowering. All tall growing perennials, which need support, should be staked and new growth tied in. Prune back climbers and shrubs that have flowered and remove dead and spindly growth. Clip hedges such as privet from now onwards. Mow lawns regularly and weed and feed if necessary. Harden off tender bedding plants and vegetables

ready for planting out towards the end of the month when late frosty nights should be over. Slugs are active, so take whatever precautions you are comfortable with to control them. Watch out for aphid attacks on indoor plants; aphids multiply rapidly as the weather warms up. Early sown plants should be growing away now but they still need looking after; weed and feed! If you are sowing lettuce, spring onion, radish and beetroot, little and often is the key. Sow sweetcorn, courgettes, marrows, squash and pumpkins in individual pots to produce strong plants for planting out later on.

FOR MORE TIPS, WHY NOT JOIN YOUR LOCAL GARDENING GROUP? The Burnham and District Horticultural Society meet at 7.30pm on the third Monday of each month (except December) at the Community Centre, Berrow Road. Now is a good time to join. We have a full and varied programme of speakers and events – all for just £5.50 per person per year. The next meeting is on Monday 18th May, with a talk from Derek Briggs - Life on the Edge – the Somerset Wetlands. All welcome; members of the Society free, visitors £1.50. Our next plant sale is taking place on Saturday 16th May between 10am and 12 noon at The Community Centre, Berrow Road, Burnhamon-Sea. There will be bedding and vegetable plants for summer and a varied selection of perennial plants, shrubs, roses and herbs available to buy. Members with plants to donate or who can provide help at the event – please contact Jane on 01278 789661.

Highbridge Summer Choir If you enjoy singing, this choir should be the choir for you. The choir will be open to all abilities and based in Highbridge at the Hope Baptist Church, Church Street, Highbridge TA9 3HW. It will run from Thursday 7th May until July. You will have the opportunity to learn or improve your vocal technique whilst singing some great music. Thanks to the Highbridge Community Fund there will be no charge to join this choir, it's completely free! So, why not take up this great opportunity. For more information or to book your place please contact Jane Lee on 01278 783511 or email jane.lee36@btinternet.com.

Friends of Burnham Hospital Annual Fete Once again the Hospital Friends are putting on their Annual Fete in Manor Gardens on Monday 31st August. We will have entertainment in the Main Arena throughout the day and in the event of bad weather we will still operate a considerably reduced event in the Baptist Church Hall and the Methodist Church Hall, which are both on College Street. We will contact all charities and businesses that have shown interest in the past by the end of May. If you have not received an email by that time please contact me if you would like to have a stall. Bernard Spilsbury, bernie.alto@gmail.com 01278 785727.

Quiz Night The friends of Berrow village are hosting the popular quiz on Saturday 9th May at 7pm (Quiz starts at 7.30pm prompt). There is a £50 first prize and there will be a bar and food available during the evening; only food and drink purchased at the premises may be consumed on the premises.
