SRYP NCS Team Mystery Inc. Fundraising in Burnham 180 young people from across Somerset have taken part in NCS (National Citizen Service) this summer with local charity Somerset Rural Youth Project, resulting in learning a whole host of new skills and raising awareness and money for 16 charities. Somerset Rural Youth Project, based in Edington, has delivered the government-backed National Citizen Service (NCS) since 2011. The scheme is designed to give year 11 and 12s the opportunity to spend time away from home trying new things, meet and learn from influential members of the community, and plan and deliver their own social action projects. Each team of up to 15 participants went on an activity residential, trying out canoeing, high ropes and climbing, followed by a local residential and then spent 30 hours planning and delivering a social action project of their choosing. Team Mystery Inc. chose to use their social action project to raise money for three local charities: Friends of Burnham Hospital; In Charley’s Memory; and BARB Search & Rescue. Following a week of planning and preparing, they completed a number of fundraising events: marshalling at the Brean Down 10k Run; a two-day charity car wash; two treasure hunts dressed as characters from Scooby Doo (one in Burnham-on-Sea and one in Apex Park, Highbridge); a car boot sale; and a cake sale. In total they raised £422 for the three charities, with Friends of Burnham Hospital receiving £50 and the remainder split between the other two. The team also handed out leaflets, put up posters, set up a Facebook page and posted in various websites to raise awareness of their selected charities. Somerset Rural Youth Project is now recruiting year 12s for Autumn NCS, which includes a residential on Exmoor, starting on Saturday 24th October. There will also be programmes in spring and summer 2016. NCS looks great on CVs and university applications, and takes place during school and college holidays. Information can be found at ncswest.co.uk or sryp.org.uk.

Burnham’s Rink Plans No Longer ‘On Ice’ The group behind the bid to bring a skating rink to Burnham-On-Sea for the Christmas period is lining up a range of activities to support it, now that it has the funding from the Town Council to book the attraction. Burnham Events Social Team (BEST) was successful in its application for a grant from the Council and also has the backing of Sedgemoor District Council which is waiving the fees for using Lynton Road Car Park for the three weeks that the rink will be in town. A delighted Kathy Jones, chairman of BEST, said the group could press ahead with its plans which they are confident will bring a new audience to Burnham for Christmas shopping and the other events proposed for the town’s Frostival. “We will be opening the rink in early December, with a fun fair and other crowdpullers, and it will be able to take up to 25 skaters at a time.” Said Kathy. “It will be lit and there will be carols and it will be fun for all the family. We would like to thank everyone who has helped us so far and to assure them that it will bring in residents and visitors alike. For those new to the town it will showcase what we have to offer and no doubt they will be back once they see what we have to offer especially in terms of independent shops, cafes and bars. The rink will send out a message far and wide that we are a town which likes to put on a show and welcomes families. We will be using social media, the press and leaflets to let people know it’s here and we are confident it will draw in the crowds.” The rink will be open for seven hours a day and skating will cost £4. For more details and how to get involved with BEST, contact Kathy on 07743 355436.

Burnham-on-Sea Lions Club We are a friendly club made up of male and female members from all age groups and different backgrounds. We take part in many community ventures which are all done on a voluntary basis. These include running stalls at fetes and open days, and marshalling for triathlons and half marathons. We have historically collected at Burnham-on-Sea Carnival and will hopefully continue to do so for many years to come. We raise money for local good causes and fund outings/events for the deserving and those who care for others. All the things we do through the year allow us to donate money to some really great causes. We have been able to help so many people with the monies we raise and these are such things as, supplying a mobility scooter and car hoist to a lady who was pretty much housebound, which has changed her life completely. We paid to purchase a piece of equipment for Somerset Court for their Trim Trail which will be hugely beneficial to their residents and visitors. Our latest venture is supporting a local girl who is an up and coming athlete, with an item of equipment that she desperately needed. We meet at the Fox & Goose on the first Wednesday of every month for a business meeting. This is where we decide what events/activities and community ventures we can support. We really would like to welcome some new members to our group, so if you can spare a few hours and would like to have fun whilst doing something so vital to the community, then please get in touch with Claire on 07882612515 or via email claireandjodie10@aol.com. We have a Facebook page which is Lions Burnham-on-Sea, and our website Burnham-on-Sea Lions Club.

Should you have a Broadband Review visit? We often find that people do not have the time or inclination to make sure that they are getting both value for money and the quality of connection that they are due. Typically speed may not be very good, wireless signal could be better and price is rarely as good as new deals offered in the press. One of the services that we offer is to visit and review internet systems. We can look at several aspects of the internet connection and advise on the following items: 1) Are you getting the speed that you are paying for, and if not, what can be done to improve it? 2) Is there a different provider that can offer a better package based on your usage? 3) Superfast broadband – what are the options? 4) Is the wireless signal reaching all desired areas in the property and is it secure? 5) Is your router causing any issues? 6) Are there any devices on the phone line causing interference issues? 7) Would you like your TV equipment connected to allow “Catch up TV” and so on? 8) Would a mobile broadband solution serve you better? 9) Are speed or quality problems caused by the computer? We will visit you in your home or office to advise on the various issues and can do the necessary to resolve any issues. Please see our main advertisement on this page and get in touch to arrange a visit.

Canvassers will ask the householder to confirm the details held on the current Register of Electors and if no one is home they will post a calling card, asking you to call Electoral Services direct. This is a costly way of collecting residents’ details, so do not delay and return your form as soon as possible.

Calling all Photographers! The Friends of Marine Cove are asking any budding photographers to share their photos of Marine Cove in Burnham-on-Sea so they can be used on the Friends website and potentially in advertising the gardens to the local community and visitors. The Friends of Marine Cove and Sedgemoor’s Community Gardener, Jacqui Strong, regularly see visitors taking photos of the garden and would like these to be shared with a wider audience. So whether you are interested in macro shots of the flowers, or landscapes incorporating St. Andrew’s Church, please get in touch. It has been four years since the restoration was completed, and visitor numbers have increased hugely since this time. Involvement from local schools has also increased, and the Cove’s calendar of free public events help to keep the garden busy. With the wonders of technology and social media it is now easy for the delights of Marine Cove to be shared with a larger audience and to build a following that attracts visitors to the gardens and Burnham-on-Sea as a tourist destination. If you would like to submit your photos, please contact Sedgemoor District Council’s Community Gardener Jacqui Strong via jacqueline.strong@sedgemoor.gov.uk or 01278 436420. You can find out more about Marine Cove and upcoming events by visiting www.sedgemoor.gov.uk and searching Marine Cove.

Are you getting a letter about your rubbish? Switchover: time to recycle much more and waste far less. By Nick Cater About 500 Burnham-on-Sea homes will see a change to their rubbish collections this month. Town centre properties with weekly rubbish collections are finally joining the other 53,000 homes in Sedgemoor district with a pick-up every two weeks. Only rubbish in wheeled bins or black sacks is affected. Other kerbside collections, from weekly recycling and fortnightly garden waste to clinical or assisted collections, are unchanged. Harmonising all of Sedgemoor’s rubbish collections will help ensure more reliable services and encourage positive steps towards far less waste and much more recycling. Each household affected by the change will soon receive a letter, which should be opened immediately to check the dates and details enclosed. Once the switch to fortnightly takes place, residents must ensure they put their wheeled bins or black sacks out on the correct day every two weeks and no earlier than the night before. Elderly or infirm neighbours may appreciate a reminder, as may those whose first language is not English. As always, all rubbish must stay inside the wheeled bin, with its lid closed and no waste on top or beside it. For those who cannot store a wheeled bin, four black sacks can be put out each fortnight on the correct day. Importantly, there will be extra help for those who use black sacks, with the offer of a free gull-proof bag to cut the litter created by these winged pests tearing open rubbish. Excess waste can, if there is space, be stored for next time, or taken to a recycling site, such as Highbridge (open Thursday, Friday and Saturday 8am - 4pm, Sunday 8am - 1pm, Monday 8am - 7pm) or Bridgwater (open 8am - 4pm seven days a week). Switching is an important reminder for residents to make full use of their recycling boxes and food waste bin each week. If any containers are missing, order them through Sedgemoor District Council customer services or online at www.somersetwaste.gov.uk/collections/order. Anyone in Sedgemoor can check their collection calendar with their postcode at http://maps.sedgemoor.gov.uk/connect/?mapcfg=waste_ environment Nick Cater is Senior Communications Officer at Somerset Waste Partnership, which manages waste and recycling services on behalf of all local authorities in Somerset.

Stage 2 Drama Presents Comedy Double Bill Stage 2 drama group are delighted to welcome our lovely audience back to our winter evening of drama and fun. A comedy double bill of hilarious drama will be performed at Berrow Village Hall on Wednesday 2nd, Friday 4th and Saturday 5th December. Boo, hiss and laugh at our cautionary melodrama ‘Scoundrels & Stratagems’ which involves the schemes, plots, counterplots and bungling attempts of the imperious Lady Pinchbeck, dastardly Squire Buzzard and sinister Lamprey to discredit, disinherit and kidnap various young innocents. Played in traditional melodramatic style with impassioned over-acting throughout, this is a hugely enjoyable romp. Enjoy a brilliantly funny comedy, another of David Tristram's superb comedies, ‘Last Panto In Berrow’, which sees the familiar four members of a struggling drama group coming up with yet another desperate scheme to draw an unsuspecting audience to one of their (infamously bad) shows. Gags come thick and fast in this excessively witty theatrical parody: Joyce wants to be in a musical but is tone deaf, meanwhile the over-bearing Gordon labours under the misapprehension of being able to write a script. Margaret is quite a diva and is continually battling with Bernard who likes to take everyone down a peg or three. Throw in a panto horse and it's a recipe for mayhem! Do come along for a fun and laughter-filled evening of dramatic local entertainment. Tickets are only £7.50 and are available by calling 01278 782319/795619 or from our website: http:// stage2drama.org/contact. The ticket price includes a light supper and there will be a bar serving both alcoholic and soft drinks.

The Civil Service Retirement Fellowship The next meeting of the CSRF will be held on Tuesday 24th November from 10.30am at Apex Park. Ex-Civil Servants are welcome to attend.

Gardening Jobs for NOVEMBER If you have ordered new plants, such as shrubs, fruit, trees and roses for your garden via the bare-root method of growing, they should start arriving during this month. Remember to give them the best start possible start by digging a planting hole of suitable size plus a bit more. Add as much organic material to the hole and some bonemeal or mycorrhizal fungi like rootgrow. Then firm the plants in firmly and water if required. Plan your plot for next year with crop rotation in mind. Prepare the ground for spring planting, by digging now, the winter weather will break down the soil nicely. Only add rotted manure for hungry crops like peas, beans and potatoes but definitely not

for root crops like carrots and parsnips. Consider what new seeds you need to purchase, particularly those which need sowing early in the year. Continue harvesting winter veg like sprouts, cabbage, leeks and parsnips. Finish forking over borders and cut down perennials. If the weather is still mild, plant new perennials, but if in doubt wait till spring. Sweep or rake up fallen leaves to make into a heap or store them in plastic bags with a few holes pierced in the bottom. Forming leaf mould could take up to twelve months. Plant tulips and spring bedding plants like wallflowers, forget-me-nots and primulas.

The next meeting is on Monday 16th November, when there will be a talk from Roy Cheek on ‘Winter Jewels – Crocus and Snowdrops’. All welcome. Members of the Society free, visitors £1.50.
