HOST Could you offer someone a home far from home for just a day or two? HOST, a well-established charity, is hoping to hear from people who would love to meet interesting young adults from other parts of the world who are currently studying at universities in the UK, and who want to understand this country better. One host, Jackie Ross, wrote: “We have done it for over 20 years and every time it is a joy. We keep learning and building relationships with young people all over the world.” Invitations can be for a day, a weekend, or three days at Christmas. Sharing Christmas with someone who has little idea what Christmas is can be really special – and for the guest, much better than being on a deserted university campus. Invitations are urgently needed from volunteer hosts, no matter their age, or how far they live from a university. To find out more, please see www.hostuk. org or call HOST on 020 7739 6292. Thank you.

We hold regular wine tasting sessions when members can taste, then drink more of those they like! It’s nothing stuffy or clever, just a chance to try different wines that we might not normally buy. Halloween Fun comes to The Walled Gardens of Cannington Bridgwater College’s The Walled Gardens of Cannington will be opening its doors once again for its annual Halloween event, from Monday 26 – Saturday 31 October, 10am – 3pm. Last year’s event saw over 300 children attend, following the pumpkin trail, carving creative pumpkin designs and enjoying their free sweet treats. This year the event, where fancy dress is optional, is expected to grow in size, and additional activities such as creepy croquet, and a visit from some of Bridgwater College’s Animal Management insects will be included. Face painting will be available at a small additional cost. Children and adults alike will be in for a treat as they explore the Gardens, surrounded by the suitably spooky medieval priory. Many ghostly stories have been shared throughout the years. It is said that a network of tunnels exist beneath the Gardens, leading to various spots in the village so that the nuns and nearby monks could meet in secret, and sightings of ghostly nuns have been reported! Tickets to the Halloween event cost £4 per child, with accompanying adults, free, which includes entrance to the Gardens, a drink of squash, a biscuit and a pumpkin when purchased in advance or £5 on the door! Tickets can be purchased from the Walled Gardens’ Gift Shop or online at store.bridgwater.ac.uk.

Rene is hiding two British airmen and is endeavouring with the help of the Resistance, to repatriate them. However, communications with London through a wireless disguised as a cockatoo add to the many embarrassments he endures in the company of his patrons. Matters come to a head with the news that the Fuhrer is to visit the town, and the cafe becomes filled with tricksters intending to impersonate Hitler before the event. Rene will need all the wit he can muster to save his cafe and his life ...... The cast have been rehearsing through the summer to ensure that the forthcoming production is going to be one to be remembered as we see the well-known characters of Rene and Edith take to the village stage at The Balliol Hall, West Huntspill between Wednesday 28th October and Saturday 31st October at 7.45pm. The tickets are available via Mary Parish on 01278 785651. This amateur production of ‘Allo ‘Allo, is presented by special arrangement with SAMUEL FRENCH LTD. For more information about the club, visit www.westhuntspillplayers.org.uk. The West Huntspill Players are also excited after receiving nominations from the Phoebe Rees Award for Best Supporting Actress – Kathy Dowson for her portrayal of Phoebe in Haywire, and David Holley and team for Best Set Construction for the same play. Play readings for the Spring Production will start in November – plays being read include Arsenic and Old Lace by Joseph Kesserlring and Outside Edge by Richard Harris. Dates will be advertised in the next edition of LocalReach.

Things to note in Windows 10
Thankfully the initial rush to install Windows 10 has subsided, as it seems that most people who want the update have now installed it. We have been heavily involved in making sure that all is well after the initial installation and have found to a large extent that people are very happy. Those that are not happy often just need some basic training to explain things. I visited one customer who was unable to print after installing Windows 10, but it turns out that he was simply printing to an old non-existent printer. This is a typical example of an issue that seems huge at the time, but with proper guidance is actually not a problem. One thing to note if upgrading from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 is that the inbuilt backup system that was originally present in Windows 7 and Windows 8 has now made a reappearance. If you right click on the white Start button and then choose control panel, you will see Backup & Restore (Windows 7). This is actually very useful for backing up the whole computer (ideally onto external hard drive), as it deals with both data and programs. In the event of a major crash, this system could be used to restore the whole computer, so I would strongly advise making sure that your system is properly backed up. Another issue that we have found is that because Windows 10 takes a backup of the previous Windows installation, it can actually slow the system down, so one way to clear up the old files is to click the Start button, then type CLEANMGR. You will then see above, Disk Clean-Up – if you run this and choose Clean Up System Files, it will then search the computer for older files which are not necessary. Typically the boxes which need ticking are: Windows Upgrade Log Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Previous Windows installation(s). At your own risk, clicking OK will clear down potentially gigabytes of unnecessary data which includes the old previous version of Windows installation files. This has typically freed up over 15 gigabytes of data which is not needed for Windows 10 to run. If your computer has not been checked previously, we would recommend getting in touch via our advertisement on this page, and book in a computer service visit. This lasts about an hour and will involve an experienced engineer visiting you and checking many elements of the computer, and providing fixes when necessary. We will come to you to complete this work. Computer Problem Solutions Ltd are Microsoft Partners and this year became Which Trusted Traders. Neil Buzzard, Computer Problem Solutions Ltd. Burnham-on-Sea U3A Classical Music Appreciation Group Just imagine a comfortable seat, good company, refreshments, and two hours of divine classical music! Whet your appetite? Well if so, that is exactly what awaits you if you join the U3A Classical Music Group. The group, which meets in two venues, one in Burnham-on-Sea and one in Mark, consists of like-minded people who enjoy listening to the other members’ choice of music and occasionally have the opportunity to share their own favourite CD tracks with them. Members are able to attend either or both meetings which take place in Mark on the first and third Monday afternoons of the month, and at Burnham on the second and fourth. The music consists of an eclectic mix of composers from early baroque to twentieth century. It includes the occasional lollipop but also seeks out the unknown, the unusual and the surprising. The genre runs the gambit of symphony orchestra, to solo instruments or singers, to choirs, chamber groups, the organ and even the occasional brass instrument! But whatever the media, the experience is always enjoyable and rewarding. The Mark branch of the group grew when the Burnham contingent became too large to fit into our host’s lounge, and both sessions regularly have attendances of up to eight people. However, there is still space for one or two more, so if you fancy a relaxed, informing and enjoyable afternoon, ring Rod Winfield on 789824 or Ken Henton on 641278. We’d be delighted to see you.

Are you getting a letter about your rubbish? Switchover: time to recycle much more and waste far less. By Nick Cater About 500 Burnham-on-Sea homes will see a change to their rubbish collections this month. Town centre properties with weekly rubbish collections are finally joining the other 53,000 homes in Sedgemoor district with a pick-up every two weeks. Only rubbish in wheeled bins or black sacks is affected. Other kerbside collections, from weekly recycling and fortnightly garden waste to clinical or assisted collections, are unchanged. Harmonising all of Sedgemoor’s rubbish collections will help ensure more reliable services and encourage positive steps towards far less waste and much more recycling. Each household affected by the change will soon receive a letter, which should be opened immediately to check the dates and details enclosed. Once the switch to fortnightly takes place, residents must ensure they put their wheeled bins or black sacks out on the correct day every two weeks and no earlier than the night before. Elderly or infirm neighbours may appreciate a reminder, as may those whose first language is not English. As always, all rubbish must stay inside the wheeled bin, with its lid closed and no waste on top or beside it. For those who cannot store a wheeled bin, four black sacks can be put out each fortnight on the correct day. Importantly, there will be extra help for those who use black sacks, with the offer of a free gull-proof bag to cut the litter created by these winged pests tearing open rubbish. Excess waste can, if there is space, be stored for next time, or taken to a recycling site, such as Highbridge (open Thursday, Friday and Saturday 8am - 4pm, Sunday 8am - 1pm, Monday 8am - 7pm) or Bridgwater (open 8am - 4pm seven days a week). Switching is an important reminder for residents to make full use of their recycling boxes and food waste bin each week. If any containers are missing, order them through Sedgemoor District Council customer services or online at www.somersetwaste.gov.uk/collections/order. Anyone in Sedgemoor can check their collection calendar with their postcode at http://maps.sedgemoor.gov.uk/connect/?mapcfg=waste_ environment Nick Cater is Senior Communications Officer at Somerset Waste Partnership, which manages waste and recycling services on behalf of all local authorities in Somerset.
The Princess Theatre and Arts Centre The Princess is busy almost every day with arts and crafts activities, as well as groups rehearsing and holding meetings in the evenings. Tuesdays see the Princess Art Group have an open studio for all, to paint and draw in our main hall. They meet at 10am and stay until after lunch. There is water provided and a great atmosphere of peer support. Occasionally a speaker will give a talk and some direction, but mostly our artists join together to enjoy their hobby. They will exhibit in our own Arts Lounge Café and fully enjoy each other’s company. All abilities are welcome – bring your work and join in. Also on a Tuesday/Thursday (alternating) the Parchment Craft meet in one of our well-lit dressing rooms and work on beautiful projects with guidance from a qualified trainer. Both groups pay £1 each for every hour they are here and enjoy a coffee or two from the café. On a Wednesday evening, as well as the Bingo which starts at 7pm, Yarn Over – our knitting/crochet circle meet up and work together on their own projects or complete items for charity. No need to even bring your own wool – there will be something here for you to knit with, and very expert guidance on-hand from some of the skilful ladies. On the final Saturday of each month (next one 26th Sept), The Burnham (and beyond) Beaders meet up to work either on a guided project or their own pieces. Again cost is £1 for every hour, plus the cost of the group project. There are often beads and findings on sale. Coming in October we have two special events. This year we hold our Macmillan Coffee morning on Saturday 3rd October – many cakes and crafts to buy, and all tea/coffee sales in the Arts Lounge that day going to Macmillan. Then on Saturday 17th October we will be joining in Sew Saturday – a national event to encourage sewing!!! Bring in your LocalReach for a free cup of tea or filter coffee! Tuesday - Friday 10am - 3pm, Saturday 10am - 1pm - see you soon!

Clubs and Organisations Back last year I was visiting some friends who asked me if I would like to join them at a Harvest Supper. Living on my own I thought, why not, it would be an evening out. The supper had been arranged by Burnham-on-Sea Moose who meet regularly on a monthly basis at Berrow Village Hall. Apart from the monthly meeting, they arrange many social events throughout the month. Membership is open not only to couples, but single gentlemen and ladies also. I was so impressed with the friendliness of everyone, that I decided to join and since then I have not looked back. I soon made a circle of friends and now play a full part in the organisation. The name Moose came from the inspiration drawn from watching the Moose animal looking after its family, the vulnerable, the old and also very young. The organisation was founded over 100 years ago to promote mutual support and friendship amongst its members. A charity we are supporting this year is the RNLI in its appeal to raise funds for the New Burnham Lifeboat. Since the start of the appeal we have raised over £3000. In recent years we have donated over £30,000 to the Somerset and Dorset Air Ambulance. Many other local charities have also benefitted from smaller donations. Naturally we also support our own members, particularly our widows and widowers for whom Sunday lunches and assisted holidays are arranged. Sick members are supported with visits, phone calls and transport if necessary. Throughout the year many social events are arranged such as strawberry teas, BBQs, race nights, fish and chip suppers, jazz concerts etc. to name but a few. At the monthly meeting the gentlemen and ladies hold their own separate business sessions before joining together for a speaker or some other form of entertainment. Topics include local history, cheese making, beekeeping, pantomime and many more. We try to provide something of interest for everyone. Why not enlarge our circle and your circle of friends by coming along to share in the fun and friendship? We meet on the fourth Thursday of each month at 7.30pm at Berrow Village Hall. A warm welcome awaits you. - Brian Hood. If you would like to find out more about membership, please contact Chris Harris on 07879 666210.

North Somerset Decorative & Fine Arts Society (NSDFAS) Members were treated to a most interesting September lecture on King Alfred, Cakes and Vikings, by Dr. Sam Newton. Amongst many other battles, Alfred was able to mount an effective resistance movement, rallying the local militias from Somerset, Wiltshire and Hampshire, and won a great victory at the Battle of Edington in Wiltshire, where Alfred converted and baptised the Danes and adopted their leader Guthrun as his son. By the time of his death he was the dominant ruler in England and styled himself as king of the Anglo-Saxons. He is one of only two English monarchs to be called ‘The Great’, the other one being Cnut, and was known for being a great champion of learning, justice and civilisation. Join us for interesting lectures on the arts, from recognised experts. Lectures are held at the 37 Club, between Woolavington and Puriton, on the first Wednesday of the month. Meetings are at 2.15pm in the winter, and during the summer they are at 7pm. Our next two are: Wednesday 7th October, 2.15pm at 37 Club - Now you see it now you don’t, by Bertie Pearce, a Member of The Inner Magic Circle who will delight us by showing that the same way as a magic trick surprises and delights us there is a primal enjoyment in being deceived by optical illusions. Wednesday 4th November, 2.15pm at 37 Club - The Glamour Holiday: The Grand Era of Travel in the 1920s and 30s, by Dr. Clare Walsh, with a lecture on how the advent of steam, hotels, boarding houses, seaside resorts and Thomas Cook made travel no longer the preserve of the wealthy, but an activity for the middle-classes. This compelled the social elite to search further afield and look for new destinations that had class and luxury.
Burnham on Sea Fundraiser set to Stride out on 26 Mile Charity Trek Paul Hale, Branch Manager at CJ Hole Burnham on Sea is taking part in the 26 mile London Trekathon on 26th September. Paul is raising funds for Burnham’s BARB Search & Rescue while his friend Mike Barsby is raising funds for the Nepal Earthquake Fund. The challenging walk will start at the Olympic Park in Stratford through London’s parks and along the waterways, passing famous sights including Buckingham Palace, Big Ben, the London Eye and St Paul’s Cathedral to finish on the Thames at Greenwich, right by the famous Cutty Sark.

Gardening Jobs for OCTOBER Continue planting spring flowering bulbs. Small bulbs should be planted 5-8 cm (2-3in) deep and larger bulbs planted 10-15 cm (4-6in) deep. A handful of sharp sand or grit placed in the bottom of the planting hole will help with drainage. Leave tulip planting until next month. This is a good month for planting evergreen hedges such as conifers, privet or box; always prepare the ground well beforehand. Continue deadheading your flowering plants and remove any dead stems on perennials. Grass growth will start to slow, so lift the height of your mower blades. There is also time to lay new turf. Clear away bean sticks, other stakes and rotting vegetation.
If sprout plants are growing in an exposed position, stake them well. Plant garlic and overwintering onions outdoors and sow some sweet peas indoors to produce strong pea plants to plant out in early March. Prepare the ground for new fruit trees and bushes and apply grease bands on fruit trees. Bring your tender plants indoors if an early frost threatens, and keep them on the dry side over winter. Keep an eye on them and remove any dead foliage. Harvest squashes and pumpkins and collect bean seeds; make sure the seeds are dry before storing them.
