Welcome to the September edition of LocalReach. This month we see barn dancing or folk dancing taking place in Highbridge and Burnham, regular exercise sessions on a Monday morning, brain exercise with a number of quizzes organised for you to take part in, plus much more. The WI is still busy organising events to celebrate the 100 year anniversary of the WI; maybe this is the year to join if you have been considering becoming a member in the past. Many other local groups are keen to attract new members, those involved in fundraising such as Moose International, or maybe for putting on shows and helping on or off stage with the West Huntspill Players. If you want your say, then the Neighbourhood Planning is keen to hear your views with the delivery of the questionnaire in last month’s edition of LocalReach. I hope you enjoy this month’s edition and would encourage anyone to get in touch with details of the events or activities that are being organised. Thank you for your continued support. Editorial deadline for October issue is Thursday 17th September. Jacqui Strong, Community Editor for LocalReach. jacqui@localreach.co.uk

Buying with Confidence Rip-offs, scams, rogue traders - people are right to be wary when buying goods and services… • Looking for a good local garage to service your car? • Not sure where to find a reputable plumber? • Want to find a builder who will do a good job? Why not try a member of Buy with Confidence? It’s the approved business scheme run by the Devon and Somerset Trading Standards Service (a joint service commissioned by Devon and Somerset county councils). Members include car traders, builders, plumbers, electrical goods retailers and many more. The main focus of the scheme is customer care and all members have to demonstrate that as well as operating in a legal and fair way, they offer customer-friendly service. All members are subject to an audit of their business to check compliance with trading standards legislation and to ensure that appropriate customer service procedures are in place. You can search for an approved business on our website or look out for the distinctive logo. For more information, visit www.buywithconfidence.gov.uk. There are also directories available with a list of all the approved businesses in Devon and Somerset. If you require practical consumer advice or a copy of the directory you can call the Citizens Advice Consumer Service on 03454 04 05 06. Over the coming weeks, 3,000 Devon and Somerset residents are being contacted by Trading Standards in relation to Mass Marketing Scams. Residents who will be receiving our advice pack were identified as potential victims by the National Scams Team after their details were found during an investigation into a scam operator. The information includes advice on avoiding scams such as prize draws, foreign lotteries and buy-to-win incentives. If you are concerned about scams, particularly that you or a relative or friend may be being targeted, you can call 03454 04 05 06 for advice – remember – if it seems too good to be true, it probably is! Five questions to ask your Estate Agent Asking your estate agent how much they charge is not the only question to ask. Edward Creswick, Managing Director of CJ Hole Burnham brings you the top five questions which will help you select the best agent to sell your home. The fees an estate agent charges is often based on local competition. Although one estate agent might have a lower fee, they may not be able to help you achieve the result you want. Asking the following top five questions will help you to select the estate agent who can sell your home effectively. It is likely that you have already invited a few estate agents round your home for a valuation before you decide on which one to select. During the valuations, make sure you ask each agent how they have come to the valuation. They should be able to offer a detailed answer for the valuation and the level of detail will give you an indicator of their expertise. Always ask the estate agent if they have sold similar properties before. Agents often specialise in selling specific types of homes, and you might find that you have a swifter sale if they know exactly how to sell your property. However, many agents do sell a range of property and you might find that your preferred agent is experienced in selling large country houses as well as city centre apartments. It’s a good idea to ask the estate agents exactly how they propose to market your home. Be sure to ask if it will be listed on the major national search portals and the local newspapers to gain wide exposure for your property. You should also find out what materials they will produce for your property. Will they take professional photographs, for example, and will they create a professional brochure. These all add to the appeal of your property to buyers and it is important that your home looks as attractive as possible to achieve the right price. If you are selling an executive property, ask them how the marketing will differ as high-end properties tend to require a different marketing strategy to appeal to the target audience. Before selecting your agent, make sure you ask about the contract. There are a few different options including sole selling rights, sole agency and multi agency. Ask your agency which contract they use and why. They should be able to explain to you the full picture of the contract in detail and point out the pros compared to the others. But don’t just take their word for it; do your own research and weigh up which one would work for you. You can then discuss any concerns you have about the contract in person, over the phone or by email to ensure you are feel comfortable before you enlist their services. Finally, don’t forget to ask how you can contact them. They should provide you with at least one telephone number and an email address so you can get in contact with any questions along the way. Having the ability to get in touch without feeling like you are pestering your estate agent will relieve an enormous amount of pressure during the selling process. In general, your gut instinct is usually right. If you get a good feeling about an estate agent, it is probably because you are confident that they can do a good job. Remember, your estate agent wants to sell your home as much as you do, so work with them to uncover any potential problems before they occur.

Two Green Flags for Sedgemoor The Green Flag Award scheme has unveiled this year’s award winners – the mark of a quality park or green space – and two of Sedgemoor’s parks are once again amongst the very best in the UK – and that’s official! Marine Cove Gardens, on Burnham-onSea’s Esplanade has received the Green Flag Award for the fourth year running, with Apex Park in Highbridge receiving it for the ninth year in a row. Apex Park received its highest ever score to really highlight how exceptional the park is. Nationally, 1582 parks and green spaces have received a prestigious Green Flag Award in 2015. The new 2015 flags were raised in July during the annual Love Parks Week. The award, handed out by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy, recognises and rewards the best parks and green spaces across the country. A Green Flag flying overhead is a sign to the public that the space boasts the highest possible standards, is beautifully maintained, holds regular events, is appropriately marketed and has excellent facilities. The Green Flag Awards are judged by an army of more than 700 green space experts, who volunteer their time to visit applicant sites and assess them against eight strict criteria, including horticultural standards, cleanliness, sustainability, and community involvement. Councillor Ian Dyer, Chairman of Sedgemoor District Council said: “It is with thanks to Sedgemoor’s parks, clean surroundings and dog warden staff, as well as the incredible support from the Friends of Marine Cove Gardens and Friends of Apex Park Improvements Group, that both parks are in tip-top condition for their wide range of visitors. Sedgemoor District Council is very proud to have once again been recognised in two separate locations for Green Flag Awards. Well done to all involved, here’s to another year.” International Green Flag Award scheme manager Paul Todd said: “We are delighted to be celebrating another record-breaking year for the Green Flag Award scheme. All the flags flying this year are a testament to the efforts of the thousands of men and women, both staff and volunteers, who work tirelessly to maintain the high standards demanded by the Green Flag Award.”

Update on Windows 10 Many of you that run Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 will have received the pop-up notification to install Windows 10, and judging by the response that we have received, it would seem that a large number have installed it. Some people have installed Windows 10 without a hitch and some have had a variety of issues. Having upgraded a number of our own computers, we noticed that they ran quicker, which was nice to see. From my experience, most issues are caused by third party software conflicting with the new system. Some anti-virus software and computer speed up software has caused issues, and in other cases, out-of-date graphics hardware has prevented the installation. Many people do tend to run a whole host of computer programs to speed up their computer, or provide security, and unfortunately, these are the type of programs that cause issues, as they have not been tried/tested properly with Windows 10. Some of the major anti-virus companies released new software in July to become compatible with Windows 10, but some of my customers did not get this upgrade which in turn caused issues with Windows 10. For those that have installed Windows 10, I would recommend checking to see if the latest Windows updates have been installed. To do this, click Start > Settings > Update & Security. From this point, there may be mention of installing updates which I would recommend that you click to allow these updates to install. The new Microsoft Edge browser works fast, but is not without issues. I don’t particularly like the new format so was pleased to find that Internet Explorer is still available via Windows 10 although can be hidden from normal view. To reactivate Internet Explorer, click Start and type the word Internet - you will then see the words “Internet Explorer Desktop App” - which can be right clicked on and pinned to the Start Menu. Click back to desktop and then click Start. The Internet Explorer icon may be found at the bottom of the list, but fortunately the icon can be dragged and dropped to the top of the Start menu so that it is easier to find. If you are experiencing any issues with Windows 10 or would like expert help moving from Windows 7 or 8/8.1 to Windows 10 then please see our advert on this page and get in touch. We are able to visit you directly in your home or business to help with such issues. Neil Buzzard, Computer Problem Solutions Ltd. Tel: 07973 536299

Cheddar Male Choir Charity Concert for Chemo Lorry ‘Hope for Tomorrow’ is a national cancer charity dedicated to bringing cancer treatment closer to patients’ homes. The Mobile Chemotherapy Units effectively reduce the long distances of travel, and waiting times for treatment, that patients often endure, and also help them to avoid the stresses and strains of busy Oncology Centres. Cheddar Male Choir will be singing at Draycott Memorial Hall, BS27 3UE at 7.30pm on Saturday 24th October to help raise funds for this very worthy charity. Please come along and support this very worthwhile charity and listen to the choir singing songs from the shows, spirituals and more traditional pieces. It will be a very enjoyable evening. You can get a ticket on the door or from any of the choir members.
Burnham Bowling Club The end of the 2015 outdoor season for lawn bowls rapidly approaches, but don't let that stop you. You can get a head-start on the 2016 outdoor season by joining the Burnham indoor section now. The Burnham Bowling Club in St. Andrew’s Road has existed for 110 years, although the indoor section for somewhat less. And, whilst many bowlers enjoy both the indoor and outdoor game, some play just one or the other. This may be due to preference or alternative interests at other times of the year. Indoor bowling is available throughout the day and evening, most days, from early October until late March. If you are thinking of taking up a new hobby or just want to keep active, you will find bowling a friendly sport that could fulfil your needs. It is also a pleasant way of passing the cold winter months, which could speed up the advent of spring. For details of indoor membership, including coaching, contact June Bridges on 781706. For information on general membership contact the Men's Secretary, Alan Lane on 792508, or the Ladies' Secretary, Anne Richards on 782890.

LOCAL EXPERT PAGE
Are you seeing the rubbish we’re seeing? Waste dysmorphism: taking a look at the reality of your waste-line By Nick Cater Some people in Burnham-on-Sea suffer from body dysmorphism, a potentially very serious condition in which their perception of what their figure looks like can cause them to deny themselves enough food or eat too much. Could it be that many more Burnham residents suffer a rather different mis-perception: waste dysmorphism? I ask, because whenever you quiz people about their waste, they will assure you that they recycle almost everything and put out hardly any rubbish, while food waste does not exist in their house, let alone their rubbish bin. Everyone knows they should recycle and should not fill their rubbish bin, because those forced to be more honest about their paucity of recycling or plentiful rubbish immediately clutch at all manner of excuses. “I have no time”, say some as they watch trash, but on TV; “I cannot understand what to do”, say smartphone app wizards; “my containers are missing”, claim a few as they chat to friends but do not call customer services for free replacements; “no space” argue those with garages so clutter-bound there is no room for their car. Food waste brings out the best excuse: “My pets eat it all.” Do please tell the RSPCA if you are feeding chicken bones to dogs, forcing cats to consume tea bags, or asking your rabbit if they want their steak rare, medium or well-done. Having done what few would dare – look inside Somerset’s rubbish bins – the embarrassing, costly truth is that most of the average rubbish bin can be recycled, half of it in household recycling containers, including almost one third in the food waste bin. Landfilling our waste is costing us all £12 million a year simply because we mistakenly perceive a couple of cans as recycling, and seem unable to see our expanding waste-lines as good materials go to waste filling the rubbish bin. For help to recycle far more, waste far less and save cash, see www.somersetwaste.gov.uk. Nick Cater is Senior Communications Officer at Somerset Waste Partnership, which manages waste and recycling services on behalf of all local authorities in Somerset.

GARDENING JOBS FOR SEPTEMBER Make a start planting spring flowering bulbs either in the garden or in containers. Forced and prepared bulbs for blooming indoors later need to be planted in suitable containers and kept cool and dark for eight weeks. Cut and dry seed heads for winter indoor decoration. Give a final trim to hedging and remember to keep them wider and thicker at the base rather than the top. Prepare sites for any new planting of trees or shrubs later in the autumn. Add plenty of well-rotted manure or compost to improve your soil. Lawn grass growth will slow down this month, so raise the cutting blades on the mower. Weather permitting it might be a
good time to lay new turf or sow grass seed, particularly late in the month. Continue harvesting crops and store onions and potatoes. On any empty patches on your plot consider sowing a green manure crop which can be dug in later during winter or late spring. This will improve the overall soil structure. Now is the time to order bare root plants like trees, fruit bushes and roses. You will have the widest choice now. If not done already pinch the tops of tomatoes and remove old leaves. After midSeptember the ripening process slows so it might be better to pick all the fruit and ripen it on a sunny window sill or in a drawer with a ripe banana
FOR MORE TIPS, WHY NOT JOIN YOUR LOCAL GARDENING GROUP? For more tips, why not join your local gardening group? The Burnham and District Horticultural Society meet at 7.30pm on the third Monday of each month (except December) at the Community Centre, Berrow Road. Burnham-on-sea Women’s Institute This year the Women’s Institute is celebrating its Centenary, and as part of these celebrations, we are holding a drop-in day at the Princess Theatre on Saturday, 12th September from 10.30am - 3pm. We are part of the Knoll Group of W.I.s, most of whom will have a table showing one of the many campaigns that the W.I. has promoted over the years, from the first ever anti-litter campaign, to free school milk, save our libraries, more midwives, and the SOS for the honeybees. You may have seen our display showing many of these campaigns in the window of Burnham library during June. This display will be on show at the Princess Theatre on 12th September. You may like to try your hand at one of the craft demonstrations that will be taking place. Entry will be free and there will be tea, coffee and cakes available to buy all day. There will be other exhibitions, crafts and a tombola stall. As many of you will know, the WI have had a very busy year so far celebrating its 100 year anniversaries. It started with a baton relay around each Federation, a garden party at Buckingham Palace hosted by the Duchess of Cornwall, and The Queen was a guest at our AGM at the Royal Albert Hall in June. There have been two programmes on BBC TV recently - Home Fires and Cakes Bakes and Trouble Makers. Do come along to help us to celebrate 100 years of campaigning, care, crafts, fun and friendship and, who knows, you may decide to join us! Our monthly meeting will be held on Tuesday 22nd September, and is a fashion show by Karen Harriott of Edinburgh Wool. This should be fun. For further details, contact our President Pat Barthram on 01278 794695 or go to our website www.burnhamwi.btck.co.uk.
Tales from a Gloucestershire Lass Burnham Area Evening Flower Club will recommence after the summer break on Monday 21st September with a return visit from Sally Taylor from Yate. Sally's demonstration is entitled ‘Tales from a Gloucestershire Lass’ which sounds very intriguing. The meeting starts at 7.30pm in St. Andrew's Church Hall and guests are very welcome. 24

Sponsor, Debbie March said: "The Great Burnham Bake-Off has become an established part of the local calendar and we are very proud to be the new sponsor. I am Champion of Young Bakers and I am delighted to bring this new competition to the Bake-Off."
