Spring has sprung – with April now upon us and the days starting to get longer it gives the town the chance to do what it does best and put on some community events. There is no shortage coming up during April and May, the first being the Theatre Event – Trading Local – that I am involved with. I would like to see this event supported as it starts the season with something a little different and is encouraging people into our town. This then opens up the door to the town’s events including Sea Dogs (new for 2016), Food Festival, Emergency Service Day and all the events that are planned for the Manor Gardens with CADs – to name a few. If you would like to promote your events or local groups please contact Jacqui@localreach.co.uk Editorial deadline for May issue is Tuesday 12th April 2016. The family business you’ll be at home with When you buy windows, doors and conservatories there are three things you do need to be sure about - value-formoney, quality and the workmanship of the installers. And the one thing you most certainly don’t need is being pressured into making decisions. Kingfisher can set your mind at rest on all counts. We are a long established family firm and family values dictate the way we do business. So much so that many of our customers become friends and, in turn, recommend us to their friends. Our product range is comprehensive and consistently keenly priced. It includes PVCu, timber and aluminium and can be viewed, at your leisure, at our East Brent showroom. If you invite us to give you a quotation, we will take the time to establish your requirements exactly, explain the options and choices to you, give advice where required, take careful measurements and give you a clear, detailed breakdown of costs. We will then leave you to make a decision in your own time. You will not be harassed or badgered.

Free Theatre Performances in Shops Join BOS Community Theatre Group in association with The Show of Strength Theatre Company and follow a full programme of live theatre in our town’s shops, under ‘Trading Local’. Local people have been busy producing short scripts through local writing workshops, and a selection of 12 scripts have been chosen to be performed by professional actors on Saturday 16th April from 10am until 4.30pm. A programme will be available to download through www.showofstrength.org.uk or contact Jacqui Strong on 07864 051315 email boscommunitytheatre@hotmail.com. The event is free to attend and we would like people to visit the town and spend the day watching the performances and take time to see what our town has to offer. The event is part of a bigger project, with school aged children asked to write for ‘Teddy Tell a Tale’, and stories being taken to our residential homes locally to bring a bit of theatre to them! The project has received support from Burnham and Highbridge Town Council, Sedgemoor District Council, Somerset Community Foundation, Avon and Somerset Police Community Trust Fund, Co-op Funeralcare, Take Art, and local businesses within the town including The Crafty Tea Cup, The Round Tower Guest House, The Royal Clarence Hotel and Burnham Library. We would like to hear from anyone willing to help steward during the day or to read the stories to local residents. This project has been run in a number of local towns including Westbury-on-Trym, Crewkerne, and Wells.

Outside Edge The West Huntspill Players are putting together their spring performance of Outside Edge by Richard Harris. In this popular comedy we find Roger has enough trouble assembling his cricket team to play against the British Railways Maintenance Division Yeading East, but this is nothing when compared to the complications occurring among their various wives and girlfriends. Bob has trouble between wife and ex-wife, Alex’s girlfriend locks herself in the loo, Dennis flirts indiscriminately, and Maggie can’t keep her hands off her Kevin! Even Roger’s wife, oh so patient Wife, starts to get a bit tetchy! Wait and see! HOWZAT!!! The production will take place at The Balliol Hall, Church Road, West Huntspill, on Wednesday 27th/Thursday 28th/Friday 29th/Saturday 30th April from 7.45pm. Bridgwater College's Fitness Zone The weather is starting to improve, the mornings are getting lighter, and it’s not quite as tempting to stay in the warmth of your home. We should all be aware of the health benefits of exercising regularly and leading a healthy lifestyle. It is Bridgwater College’s Fitness Zone aim to get as many of the local community as possible to participate in regular physical exercise, in any shape or form. The facts are clear about exercising; the NHS suggest for those aged 19 – 64, to stay healthy, adults should try to be active daily and do two different types of exercises during the week, aerobic and strength. The guidelines are 150 minutes per week of aerobic activity and at least two days a week of strength exercises. Nonetheless, work and family priorities can be seen as a barrier to stop people from taking part in exercise, but if we put our mind to it, we can all find at least 10 minutes to go for a run around the block, or grab a skipping rope. The NHS states that by exercising you can reduce your risk of major illnesses, such as heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and cancer by up to 50%. So why the excuse? Exercising on your own can be a scary thing, and we all know someone who wants to look good, but doesn’t have the motivation, will power or knowledge to make a change. So here are our tips to get into physical activity: • Find a friend who would like to get fit, so you can work together. • Have the same goal i.e. both aiming for the local half marathon in 2017. We believe setting goals is the major ingredient to reaching your target. • Get into a routine which you stick to, for example, run on a Monday morning, visit the gym on a Wednesday, and cycle on a Friday. • Don’t break the bank! Bridgwater College’s Fitness Zone costs just £17.50 per month, with no joining fee, a free personal fitness consultation and fitness classes included. Alternatively, you can pay as you go for just £5 per visit. • Try going to fitness classes; they are a great chance to work out with similar individuals, and it’s a great chance to meet new people! • If you don’t feel comfortable with working out in a large group, you could try the professional personal training sessions at Bridgwater College’s Fitness Zone, by yourself, or in a smaller group. You can then work to your own specific-needs with one of the qualified personal trainers. If you would like more information about Bridgwater College’s Fitness Zone, please visit www.bridgwatersport.co.uk, email sport@bridgwater.ac.uk or call 01278 441322.

Grants help people stay in their own home More money is being made available in the coming year to help disabled people stay in their own homes, by making their properties more user-friendly. The allocation for Disabled Facilities Grants for Sedgemoor District Council is increasing by £297,786 to £765,786 in 2016-17, which is the second highest allocation in Somerset. The Government money is aimed at providing financial help for home-owners or tenants to enable access into and around their home and facilities by making essential adaptations. For example, if they find they can no longer cope with features such as stairs, steps or narrow doorways, then the Council could install a stair lift, provide a ramp into the property or widen the doorways. Grants are means-tested for adults but not for children, and are invaluable for helping people stay in homes they know and love rather than have to face the upheaval of a move. Applicants should contact Somerset County Council and ask for an Occupational Therapy (OT) assessment. They will be able to talk through possible options and arrange a home visit. Work is allocated according to priority, so there could be a wait although every effort is made to get the work done as soon as practicable. The type of work that can be carried out is aimed at enabling people to stay in their home: • Widening doors or installing ramps • Improving access to facilities – perhaps installing a downstairs bathroom • Improving the heating system.
Strictly Classical U3A now has two established groups devoted to the enjoyment of classical music. We meet regularly on Monday afternoons in comfortable surroundings in Burnham and in Mark. We take it in turn to choose and present music, most of which comes from the period ‘Bach to Brahms’, but members are encouraged to choose widely. Over the eighteen months or so since the group began we have listened to some earlier music and some 20th century music too. If you are seriously interested in good music and would like to know more about our groups, please get in touch with Rod Winfield: 01278 789824 / rwinfield36@gmail.com or Ken Henton: 01278 641278 / ken.henton@gmail.com

Ashton Windmill Many people in Burnham and Highbridge are probably unaware that there is a complete windmill which is open to the public on Sunday afternoons less than a 20 minute drive away. Ashton Windmill is an 18th Century tower mill of a typical Somerset design. The windmill was used to grind corn for flour and beans for cattle food. It was built between 1766 and 1774. It last worked in 1927 and has been restored in recent years. It still contains original machinery on four floors that can be seen by visitors. It lies on the road from Weare to Wedmore and is signposted from the A38 at Lower Weare. It is in the parish of Chapel Allerton and is on the ridge known as the Isle of Wedmore. It has commanding views of Cheddar Gorge, the Somerset Levels, the Polden Hills, Brent Knoll and the Somerset Coast. The windmill is situated in a prime location as the wind can reach it from any direction. The Windmill is open to visitors on Sunday afternoons between Easter and the end of September. Parking is available and there are picnic facilities. Entry is free of charge although donations are very much appreciated towards the upkeep of the building.

Let’s hear your views The Neighbourhood Plan for this area continues to evolve, with the latest two chapters now out for consultation - and the team are keen to hear your views. The Highbridge consultation is open until 4th April and you can complete it online with lots of opportunities to add in your comments. You would have received a paper copy of the questionnaire in last month’s LocalReach; if you need another, you can pick one up at the library, community centre, town council or many local venues. The web address is goo.gl/MFHYwz Launching this month is the Housing consultation (see the booklet enclosed with this edition). The team of volunteers have been working very hard to distil the acres of government and council guidance on housing design into a few easy to understand policies that will make future housing in this area better to live in and visit. It's important to point out that the Neighbourhood Plan can't decide where housing might be built - but it can set policies on what that housing looks and feels like. Your views on this chapter are welcome and you can fill out the questionnaire online, where there is a lot more space for comments. The web address is goo.gl/oGU7KW

Then come and join ‘Burnham Wine Club’, where you can discover wine, break down myths and uncover some hidden gems in a fun and friendly atmosphere. The first tasting evening on Thursday 28th April will be exploring classic grape varieties and tasting them from around the world, so that you can see if there are any differences. Friends of Apex Park The Friends group were joined by members of the public and members from the Sedgemoor Model Boat Club to help litter pick around Apex Leisure and Wildlife Park on Friday 4th March 2016. The ‘Clean for the Queen’ event was part of a national campaign to spruce up the country in time for the Queen’s 90th birthday. A total of 24 bags were filled with plastic bottles, bags and the usual litter you’d expect to find, but also among the items removed were a crash helmet, umbrella, metal chair frame, wet floor sign, part of a fridge door and a child’s potty! All were removed from the park by Sedgemoor District Council’s Clean Surrounding Services, to be separated before going to the local recycling centre.

Shopping & Internet Banking
If don't already use online shopping on your computer, you should definitely consider it, as there are many fantastic websites that offer competitive prices and together, a very wide selection of products, in fact often better selections than at supermarkets. You can also get insurance quotes and book plane tickets from your computer. Did you know that instead of going straight to sites like EasyJet or KLM and so on, you can instead use a site like Expedia (www.expedia.co.uk) or SkyScanner (www. skyscanner.net) to automatically find your cheapest tickets from over 1000 airline companies? It's a no-brainer, so check it out now! This is the same for insurance companies, instead of getting quotes from specific companies, visit CompareTheMarket (www.comparethemarket.com) or GoCompare (www.gocompare.com) to automatically find your cheapest insurance and save hours of searching! A website you may be familiar with is Amazon (www.amazon.co.uk), which offers competitive prices and a large selection, and the option to gift wrap items if they are intended to be presents. A tip for Amazon: if you purchase an annual "Amazon Prime" subscription, you can have free next-day delivery on almost all items - a fantastic advantage to anyone who is a frequent buyer or who dislikes waiting days and days for their orders to arrive! Also, you get access to the "Amazon Prime" movie library which can be viewed via a smart TV, tablet, or computer, at no extra cost. Also, did you know that if you use a website like Flubit (www.flubit.com), you can quickly and safely find cheaper prices for almost anything you buy online? Simply go to the item page that you want to find cheaper (e.g. on Amazon, search for your item, then click on the item in the results to visit the item page), copy the web address (URL) at the top and go to www.flubit.com and paste it in where it asks, and click "Create me a lower price", and you may get it cheaper! Many people I meet do not use internet banking as they are worried about security and illegal access to their bank accounts. All the main UK banks have taken great steps to protect customer data and in the last 12 months, I have not come across any customer who has had their internet banking accessed illegally (in the past this was quite a problem), so I would recommend using internet banking providing you have good security on the computer (not free security). If you need any help with internet security or any other computer related item, please see our main advert on this page. Neil Buzzard, Director, Computer Problem Solutions Ltd. Litter Free Coast and Sea Somerset: an update Since November 2014 the bathing water at Burnham-on-Sea has been classed as ‘Poor’ after the bathing water standards became much stricter across Europe. Litter Free Coast and Sea Somerset arrived in Burnham-on-Sea in January 2016 to finds ways the community can work together and alongside different organisations to improve the bathing water and reduce beach litter through campaigns, events and education. Harriet Yates-Smith is the Project Officer and has been getting out and about meeting different people and sent out an online questionnaire to find out what people most liked about Burnham-on-Sea’s beaches and what they think are the key issues to tackle in order to improve bathing water quality and keep the beaches free from litter. The questionnaire had over 100 responses from the community and the results of these together with individual meetings will be used to shape three campaigns around the community’s biggest concerns. The campaigns, which will start at the end of April, will be positive and look at celebrating Burnham-on-Sea’s beautiful beach and will enable the community and other key stakeholders to work together to improve them. Thank you to everyone who responded to the Litter Free Coast and Sea Somerset questionnaire. Litter Free Coast and Sea Somerset will be calling on community groups and volunteers to get involved with the campaigns via workshops and meetings so please keep in touch via Twitter, Facebook, phone or email. Annual Plant Sale
West Huntspill Horticultural Society will be holding their Annual Plant Sale of Flowers & Vegetables at the Balliol Hall West Huntspill on Thursday May 12th at 7.30pm. There will be a selection of nursery grown bedding, container and basket plants as well as flower and vegetable plants grown by Society members. Profits go towards the running costs of the Annual Summer Flower Show.
GARDENING JOBS FOR APRIL Hopefully the weather will be kind to us as there is a lot to do. Feed all your shrubs and roses with a good general fertilizer at the rate of one handful per plant and hoe it in carefully. If you wish to use a soluble feed fertilizer throughout the growing season, start this at the beginning of the month. I tend to use both types of fertilizer. Plant up your summer bulbs, always add a handful of grit or sharp sand underneath the bulb to assist with drainage. Prune Penstemons and lavender just above fresh, new shoots. By all means plant up your hanging baskets but they will need the protection of being inside. You can try brushing the plants gently every day with thin paper or card - this helps harden the plants. Deadhead and foliar feed spring bulbs weekly until the foliage starts to die down.
Potatoes can all be planted, remember they are a hungry crop. If a late frost is forecast, cover up the new shoots with soil or cover with fleece. Repot and top dress your container plants and put supports in place for perennials before they get too tall. Indoor sowings should be growing well and they will need watering and looking after .You can put them outside during the day but they need indoor protection still at night. It should be time to start your outdoor sowing, remember little and often for crops like beetroot, lettuce, radish and spring onions. Towards the end of the month French and runner beans may be sown, but they might need protection even in late May. It’s the start of the “Hoe, hoe, hoe” season so please keep on top of those weeds!
FOR MORE TIPS, WHY NOT JOIN YOUR LOCAL GARDENING GROUP? The Burnham and District Horticultural Society meet at 7.30pm on the third Monday of each month (except December) at the Community Centre, Berrow Road. The next meeting is on Monday 18th April 2016 with a talk from Dr George Hargreaves on Rhododendrons, Camelias and Magnolias. All welcome to attend - members of the Society free, visitors £1.50.
