The family business you’ll be at home with When you buy windows, doors and conservatories there are three things you do need to be sure about - value-formoney, quality and the workmanship of the installers. And the one thing you most certainly don’t need is being pressured into making decisions. Kingfisher can set your mind at rest on all counts. We are a long established family firm and family values dictate the way we do business. So much so that many of our customers become friends and, in turn, recommend us to their friends. From the editor
Welcome to the summer edition of LocalReach – we have a diverse range of information in this months publication from Opera in the Apex Park, to a railway walk from Highbridge to Burnham marking the 50 years since the closure of the S&D line in Gone but not Forgotten. With the popular Annual Play Day making its mark in the Apex Park at the start of the month and ending with the Bank Holiday fete in the Manor gardens there is something to entertain families throughout the summer period, not forgetting this years first Spray Jam on the 13th and 14th August. With music clubs taking a well earned break starting back in September why not be entertained and visit one of the events that we haven’t seen before. This summer there will be a Flag Trail with 31 flags flying during August, turning the town centre streets into an open air art gallery. The artistic team has worked with four local schools to develop images that describe what Burnham on Sea means to the children - these images have been created into the flags. The aim of the project is to showcase the life of our town, to contribute to making our town a colourful and vibrant place to visit during August. If you would like to promote your event or organization please forward any editorial to me in good time via email Jacqui@localreach.co.uk Editorial deadline for September issue is Wednesday 10th August 2016. Sedgemoor Playday Since 2001 a playday has run in conjunction with the National Playday and for the past 8 years it has been run at Apex Park in Highbridge. It is organised by a committee of people who are interested and have a passion for Play. The event is FREE! The committee have to rely on obtaining grants to run the day. Sedgemoor District Council is very much involved and we have received grants from County Councillors and The Friends of Apex Park this year. There is an opportunity on the day for those attending to make donations of cash to enable the playday to run each year! If every child paid £1 we would definitely be able to ensure the playday runs next year. This year all public car parking will be in the Bay Centre, Cassis Close at a cost of £1 per car. All profits from car parking will be split between the voluntary Playday Committee (to support future Playday’s) and the Rotary Club of Burnham-on-Sea. As the event expands, car parking management is a key priority to ensure the safety of the event’s visitors. Free disabled and trader parking will still be available in Apex Park car park. This year the playday is to be run on Wednesday 3rd August at Apex Park 10.00 – 3.00pm. There are over 45 activities which include climbing wall, archery, fishing, man from story mountain, Action Pussycat, Zorbs. Important news – OneDrive lowers free storage space for all users. Are you a free Microsoft OneDrive user, like so many others around the globe? If so, be sure to read on carefully, as this may concern you and your important files. As of July 27th 2016, OneDrive no longer offers 15GB of storage for free users, and instead has dropped this down to only 5GB – bad news for users who are utilizing more than 5GB of data. For those who are indeed using over 5GB, Microsoft has announced the following rules regarding the safety of your files: • If you forgot to shrink your usage to 5GB maximum, don’t panic – your files have not been deleted. You have a 90-day period to meet the 5GB quota. • If you still remain over the 5GB quota after 90-days, you will still be able to access your documents, but will be unable to make changes to them, or add any new content. • If after 9 months you are still over the quota, your account will be locked, preventing access to your files, unless you take action to remove them and meet the quota. • If still over the quota by one year, your files may be deleted. So what are your options if you don’t want to settle for only 5GB? Well, to stick with OneDrive there are a couple ways to get more space: • Purchase an Office 365 subscription - various options available • Upgrade to 50GB of storage for £1.99/month. If you need any help with Onedrive or any other types of Cloud Storage backup systems, please get in touch. There are several backup systems available that we can advise on. Motown & Soul Night at The Windmill Bar and Bistro. A fun filled, action packed evening to include a delicious two course meal with live entertainment from a local tribute act on a Thursday evening in June. I have driven past the Windmill Club at Edithmead Leisure Park on many occasions situated on the A38 next to J22 of the motorway and taken in the signs for their carvery, but had not ventured out to try the food and entertainment they put on offer. We were greeted upon our arrival and shown to our table in the nicely decorated bar area, with curved high back seating, we were given one of the best seats in the house. The dining area was spacious with easy access to the bar and the facilities in the first floor entertainment space. Background music was playing to set the scene for the night ahead with the likes of Diana Ross and Lionel Richie. We received a drink upon arrival and sat down to wait for our meal. The entertainment area has a compact dance floor which comfortable allowed for about 30 people dancing with a small raised stage area for the entertainment. The food although not yet reached us yet smelt delicious and we were looking forward to Southern Fried Coated Chicken breast served with either chipped Sweet Potatoes or Mash Potatoe. We were not disappointed when the food arrived, the portion size was very good and chicken cooked perfectly, nice and moist on a bed of Chipped Sweet Potatoe, with side order of vegetables and spicy bean mix, all very tasty and presented well on square plates with matching dishes. My plate was left bare enjoying the flavours and the food on offer. The drink prices were as you would expect from a local bar and served by friendly staff throughout the evening. Our waitress was prompt in clearing the dishes and there were plenty of staff working to keep the customers happy. We were all expecting to choose our dessert however had both the desserts on offer with an extra choice of fresh strawberries upon request. The dessert was a plated pecan pie and lemon merangue pie served with fresh cream, more than adequate portion sizes following the good sized main course. The tribute act came on after we had finished our food - he had a lovely style and voice. It wasn’t long before guests were dancing to the well known tunes and singing along to popular songs from Smokey Robinson, Lionel Richie, The Temptations, to name a few. He had a clear voice and had good choice of songs to engage with the audience covering several decades. He performed two 45 minute sets encouraging the use of the dance floor which soon filled up! During the evening there was a pleasant atmosphere as customers enjoyed good food and good entertainment. I would return again and am hoping to secure a baby sitter for the Halloween event on Monday 31st October for the Murder Mystery event!

Burnham on Sea Rugby Club moving forward With the European Football Championships, Wimbledon and the Olympic Games people would be forgiven for thinking no more! However, there are other sports which are within the reach of children and adults – Rugby Union. With English Rugby Union currently very much on top of their game we would invite you to come along and give rugby a ‘try’! Burnham Rugby Football Club have been plying their trade for over 100 years and are based at the BASC Ground, Stoddens Road. There are two Senior teams – one playing in the Western Counties North Division and the other in Somerset Two South. The Development Squad are playing in the Gloucester League. However, these teams would not exist without home grown talent and thankfully the Minis and Juniors section has been growing steadily over the last couple of years but the club are always looking for new players to come along and give rugby a go. The Minis and Juniors train and play every Sunday, 10-12, from September through to end of April; girls and boys welcome from age 6 upwards. All Coaches are RFU qualified and the Club has recently been awarded ‘Kids First’ Status which places the emphasis on children learning the game whilst having fun and making new friends. Current Junior Club Chairman, Paul Mills, is rightly pleased with last season’s endeavours. Paul stated “Last season was probably our most adventurous with the Minis and Juniors having a successful tour to Weymouth; the Junior Club gaining a fantastic sponsor in Trafalgar Automotive Cleaning Products; and, several players represented Somerset County. However, we still need to recruit and this is part of our Recruit and Retain project”. Chris Jones, Chair of Burnham Rugby Club, said “Without Minis and Juniors the club cannot survive and get stronger. Burnham is an inclusive club and we are very much promoting a One Club philosophy, everyone is welcome and it is great to see the children mixing with the seniors and learning a sport.” Overall the future is looking good for the club but without home grown players it is a struggle so if any Parent / Guardian is thinking what could get my child away from the x-box then please contact either Paul Mills (millsp.pm@ gmail.com) or Steve Hall (steve1973.sh.sh@gmail.com). Alternatively, come down on Sunday 4th September to the BASC Ground and see what it is all about!
Fancy playing Rugby? Starts Sunday 4 September - 10am to 12 noon Burnham Rugby Club, BASC Ground, Stoddens Road. New players welcome, boys and girls age 6 through to 16. RNLI lifeguards return to Somerset’s beaches this weekend RNLI Lifeguards are back on Sedgemoor District Council-managed beaches in Somerset this weekend in preparation for what is set to be a busy summer thanks to the UK’s recent heat-wave. From Saturday 9th July RNLI lifeguards will be returning to Sedgemoor beaches: Burnham-on- Sea and Berrow, to begin their full time safety patrols. They will be on the beaches daily from 10am till 6pm. The RNLI Lifeguards will provide an additional service at Burnham and Berrow Beaches alongside the Sedgemoor-employed Beach Wardens. All beach users are urged to follow safety signage and listen to any advice and warning information issued by Sedgemoor’s Beach Wardens or the RNLI Lifeguards – the staff are there to ensure your safety. Luke Penman, RNLI Lifeguard Supervisor, said: ‘All our lifeguards are very much looking forward to returning to Sedgemoor beaches this summer. ‘We encourage those thinking of a trip to the coast over the summer months to always visit a lifeguarded beach and if you’re heading into the sea please respect the water and swim between the red and yellow flags, which have been designated as the safest swimming areas by lifeguards. ‘RNLI lifeguards are fully trained in all aspects of beach safety, so if you have any questions please approach a lifeguard who will be more than happy to help or offer expert advice. ‘If you find yourself or anyone else in trouble please raise your hand and call for help. It is very important that you don’t try and attempt the rescue yourself – the situation could easily turn and you could find yourself in trouble too. RNLI lifeguards will come to your assistant; or if something happens outside of the lifeguarding hours phone 999 and ask for the Coastguard.’

Citizens Advice Sedgemoor launches campaign to expose scammers’ tricks Citizens Advice Sedgemoor is urging people in our area to spread the word about scams and expose the tactics of fraudsters to protect others and help stop people falling prey to scams by following a threestep rule - get advice, report it, and tell others about it. Scam methods include vishing whereby scammers cold-call people in a bid to get their bank details, and offers of fake services, such as telling people their computer has a virus which they can fix remotely. Investment scams carried the highest price tag, with people investing in fake diamonds or bogus stocks and shares losing of on average £20,000 each. Citizens Advice is warning people to be on guard and watch out for the different methods used by fraudsters, from doorstep selling of counterfeit goods to demands for upfront payments for services that never materialise. Eight common scams reported to Citizens Advice are: 1. Investment - victims are persuaded to invest money into fake ventures 2. Fake services - people are offered a service for a fee, only to find the service isn’t real or doesn’t exist at all. 3. Vishing - con-artists cold-call people pretending to be a legitimate company, asking for credit or debit card details - for example on the pretence that they need to refund overpaid bills. 4. Doorstep selling - victims are offered goods door-to-door or from the back of a van, which are likely to be counterfeit. Fraudsters selling mattresses, “fresh” fish and cleaning products were all reported to Citizens Advice. 5. Upfront payment or fee - fraudsters ask for a payment in advance for a service or product that never materialises, such as asking for a fee to get a loan, or to pay for a training course to secure a job. 6. Premium rate texts - victims inadvertently agree to receive premium rate texts about games or competitions, usually costing around £4 each. 7. Counterfeit goods - people buy goods at marketplaces or online that turn out to be counterfeit or even stolen. Common products include cigarettes, shoes and clothing, and tickets for events. 8. Goods not received - people place orders for goods which don’t arrive. Scams are often carried out through social media and online auction sites.

Gardening Jobs for AUGUST Tackle tough perennial weeds with a weedkiller. Tidy up strawberry beds and pot up any rooted runners for planting later on when they are more established. Early summer fruits like raspberries and hybrid berries, which have finished fruiting can, have their old fruiting canes cut back to the ground. Leave the new green canes produced during this year as these will bear next year’s fruit. Damp down floors of greenhouses on very hot days and keep them well ventilated. Stop tomatoes by pinching out the tops to allow as much fruit to ripen in time. Trim lavender plants after flowering to keep plants compact and not woody.
Remove dead flower heads as they fade to encourage more flowers and give plants a regular liquid feed to keep them going. Cut back perennials, which have finished flowering, to half their height. Take heather and pelargonium cuttings from young sideshoots. Cut down the haulms of potatoes a few days before lifting them to harden the skin on the crop. Make sure runner beans are well watered and pinch out the tops when they have reached the top of their supports. Keep an eye out for the dreaded cabbage white caterpillars on brassica plants.

New Major Appeal Launches to support Somerset’s Coast Somerset Wildlife Trust dispels the myths and reveals a coast worth far greater protection Somerset Wildlife Trust is today launching its Somerset’s Brilliant Coast Appeal - which aims to deliver vital funds to explore and better understand the county’s coastline in order to protect its diverse habitats and wealth of species that are facing many threats - the need for reinforced coastal flood defenses, tidal and nuclear energy generation and the conversion of coastal habitats for development to name just a few. Contrary to what might be the public perception, Somerset’s 73 km coastline is an extraordinarily diverse place, rich in habitats, wildlife, world-class geology and historical heritage. However, little is known about our coastal wildlife and, coupled with increased development pressures, this lack of awareness could lead to poor decision-making for its future, which may have irreversible consequences for wildlife further across the county. Based on a successful pilot year of activity along the coast, Somerset Wildlife Trust has been able to develop a conservation plan for Somerset’s Coast. A key part of this is developing our knowledge base of coastal wildlife through undertaking systematic surveys of some of our more difficult to reach environments. The Trust has received a contribution from the Peter De Haan Charitable Trust that will support this much needed coastal wildlife survey work over the next three years, however it still needs £85,000 in funds to carry out the necessary surveys to increase the scientific evidence base on, and raise awareness of the importance of, Somerset’s coastal wildlife. Somerset’s Brilliant Coast Appeal hopes to gain support from existing Trust members, conservations enthusiasts, and the wider public whether their passion is the county’s iconic wildlife, its diverse habitats or the world-class geology that underpins our fantastically varied landscape. For more information on the Appeal and some examples of where monies raised will be spent, please visit Somerset Wildlife Trust’s website, any gift given will go directly to helping us carryout critical survey work along the coast and supporting the wildlife here and throughout the county. You can also donate securely by card on our website at: http://www.somersetwildlife.org/coastappeal or by telephoning 01823 652429. Every donation, whatever the size, will make a difference.
