The family business you’ll be at home with When you buy windows, doors and conservatories there are three things you do need to be sure about - value-formoney, quality and the workmanship of the installers. We will then leave you to make a decision in your own time. You will not be harassed or badgered.

£4019! That's the astonishing amount that the weekly Friday quiz at The Ritz raised for local charities, clubs and societies during 2015. Those that benefited include: Children's Society, BARB, Fibro Heart, Scouts, Hillview Carnival Club, Weston Hospice, BIARS, Bay Club and many more. An average of £120 is raised on the evenings, with the record standing at £271! Local clubs and societies, School PTAs, charities, local groups etc. are invited to contact The Ritz in Victoria Street, Burnham-on-Sea as they are now taking bookings for Friday dates through 2016. Committee member Mike Barsby says: “We are really pleased to be able to offer local groups the opportunity to enjoy a relaxing night out and to raise a substantial amount for their good cause at the same time. We organise everything, supplying the questions, quizmaster, snacks and the raffle. All the good cause has to do is turn up on the night with a few teams, supply a couple of raffle prizes and enjoy the evening. Our target for this year is £5000 - so if your group or charity wants to share in this money, please contact us as soon as you can to arrange a suitable date.” The quiz starts at 8.30pm and ends about 10.30pm. Questions are suitable for all - nothing too difficult, and families are welcome. Teams of up to six are invited to arrive from 8pm. Admission is £1 per person. The quiz is open to everyone, so even if you’re not a charity and just fancy a pub quiz with friends on a Friday night, The Ritz will give you a warm welcome. If you would like your group or charity to be booked in for a future date or just want more info, please email ritzsocialclub@hotmail.co.uk or text Mike on 07936 538263.

Final Call This is the final call for the next generation of filmmaking talent in Somerset! Talented young people aged 16-19 years in Somerset are getting the chance to become part of the next generation of filmmaking talent thanks to the British Film Institution (BFI) Film Academy Programme in partnership with BAFTA and Pinewood Film Studios. The next academy will take place in Bridgwater from the end of January and there are just six places left! Somerset Film, a local charity based at The Engine Room, leads the academy, which aims to help train and inspire the next generation of British filmmakers. Participants receive seven jam-packed days of master classes, screenings, career guidance, mentoring and hands-on workshops, plus the chance to meet industry professionals and make two short films. This year participants will also visit the Future Film Festival at the BFI in London. The academy takes place on 30 January/ 6,13,14,17 and 18 February 2016. It costs just £25, but if young people feel they will struggle to pay the course fee then they are still encouraged to apply, as this fee can be waived. Bursary places and help with transport and other costs are also available. The BFI Film Academy is aimed at those who are interested in pursuing a career in the film and media industry, whether as a script writer, set carpenter, cinematographer or director, but you don’t have to be currently studying film or media to apply. Somerset Film welcomes applications from those ideally who have already made their first short film, either with family and friends on a mobile or as part of school/college coursework. However, the most important thing is that applicants demonstrate their love of film. Alumni from previous academies continue to receive support and information from all the organisations involved and last year they visited Pinewood Studios for a training session with Sony on their latest 4k cameras. You can download an application form at www.somersetfilm.com/ initiatives/bfi-film-academy. The deadline for applications is 22nd January 2016. Call Natalie Collings on 01278 433187 for further details.

Spring has arrived! At The Walled Gardens of Cannington, the arrival of spring is marked by a flurry of events and the start of some weekend opening. With 12,000 bulbs planted at the Gardens every year, many of them will be unveiling themselves this March, as we head into the season of Mothering Sunday, Easter celebrations and Lambing Fun Day. The first Sunday opening of the season is Mothering Sunday on 6 March. The Gardens are a lovely place to spend some quality time, and all mothers visiting will receive a special gift (whilst stocks last). Easter Weekend at the end of the month, sees fun for all the family with activities for the children, and maybe a chocolate egg or two! On Sunday 13 March, entry to the Gardens is free (this day only) if you have a valid ticket for Lambing Fun Day, also taking place on this date. Meet the new-born lambs, take a tractor/ trailer ride, watch sheep racing, dog agility, falconry displays, and have a stroll around Sedgemoor Vintage Club Ltd's machinery fair! All this is taking place at Bridgwater College’s Rodway Farm in Cannington, but if you’re in the village, why not pay the Gardens a visit on the same day, and witness them blooming into the springtime season. For all other events in March, normal entry fees apply: adults £2.95 and accompanied children (under 16) free! As well as the Gardens, there is also a beautiful Gift Shop, Plant Nursery, and Tea Room, which you don’t need access to the Gardens to visit.

Capacity Audience at The Princess Theatre and Arts Centre On Sunday 20th December I was privileged to join a capacity audience at The Princess Theatre to enjoy the annual Christmas concert, performed by the Burnham & Highbridge Band. In the past I have taken part in this annual event as solo cornet, but this year I had the chance to take in the concert from a different perspective, and become a part of a very appreciative audience. The band, under its new musical director Stephen Sykes started the proceedings with a lively festive march called ‘Christmas Joy’, which was followed by some audience participation in the first of the evening’s carol singing. Next came Leroy Anderson's ‘Sleigh Ride’ before Santa Claus paid us a visit to distribute sweets to everyone, whether they had been naughty or nice. The first solo item was from solo trombone player Sarah Chadwick-Jones, in a rendition of the Ertha Kitt hit song ‘Santa Baby’, with Sarah all kitted out as Mrs Claus. The concert continued in a light-hearted vein with the music interspersed with some witty but informative facts from compère and MD Stephen Sykes. The annual band awards were presented towards the end of the evening with the David Fisher Memorial award being presented to the whole Tiso family. The band’s Person of the Year was awarded to solo horn player Jane Gregg, whilst a special award was presented to Chairman Tony Fricker for his services to the band. I am sure everyone in the audience would agree with me that Burnham and Highbridge have a band to be justifiably proud of; it certainly made me proud to be a member of the band whilst listening to the many words of praise as the audience left, thoroughly entertained. Graham Davies - Burnham & Highbridge Band

Reel Talent - raising the profile of Somerset’s filmmaking talent A brand new collection of short films entitled ‘Reel Somerset – Volume II’ has been compiled onto DVD by local charity Somerset Film to champion work made by artists, filmmakers and partner organisations living and working in the county and to wave the flag for creative talent in Somerset. The disk is being distributed to over a hundred non-profit making exhibitors in the South West in the hope that film societies, independent cinemas and community groups will show a short film before a feature or programme an entire evening of shorts. Reel Somerset - Volume II features animation, drama and documentary and includes the award-winning animation ‘Once Upon a Time in the Shed’ alongside ‘Sun’, ‘The Fischer Enquiry’ and ‘The Sound We See – A Somerset Symphony’, which have been shown at film festivals both nationally and internationally. Each short is introduced by the filmmaker. If your community group, film society or organisation would like to hold a screening and receive a copy, then email info@somersetfilm.com or call 01278 433187. There is no cost to screen the content, however, a donation of £20 helps to cover production and postage costs and register the recipient for Volume III. If you’re a filmmaker and would like to have a short film considered for inclusion on Volume III, then drop them a line too.

Music Video Opportunity for Young People Are you aged 16 – 19 years and interested in making music videos or VJing? Somerset Film at The Engine Room in Bridgwater is offering a free half-term activity for those into electronic music and motion graphics. Over five days, participants will create electrifying video sequences to accompany work produced by Somerset-based musicians and composers. The activity is part of an initiative called ‘Art Academy’, supported by Arts Council England, and aims to pass on digital skills to young artists across all the art forms. In November half-term last year Somerset Film worked with dancers and filmmakers and the final film can be seen on their Youtube channel. Richard Tomlinson from Somerset Film said: “We’d love to work with young people who have interests in music making, DJing, animating and creating visual effects. No previous experience is needed, just enthusiasm, creativity and a willingness to try something new. Our aim is to share whatever is created nationally.” Somerset Film, a charity based in Bridgwater, has previously collaborated with artists and music producers such as Boxabeat, Robin McGovern, and Buoyancy to create outdoor projection events. Music for the Memory Fundraising Concert We are a local self-funding, not-for-profit group. The group enables people living with Dementia / memory loss to meet in a relaxed, non-medical environment, to perform a variety of musical activities. We would like to thank all the local organisations who have helped us to continue to provide this music based social group. Without your help our members would not be able to continue to enjoy the benefits that music brings to them. Our members are the reason this group continues to exist; everything we do is focused upon their well-being. One of our members told us: "When I sing I don't have Dementia". Design consultant appointed to progress design of Bridgwater Barrier One element of Somerset’s 20-Year Flood Action Plan is the construction of the Bridgwater Barrier by 2024, subject to appropriate funding and approvals. The Environment Agency and Sedgemoor District Council are working together on the project, supported by the Somerset Rivers Authority. Previous studies and research have identified that a tidal surge barrier is the best long-term solution to protect approximately 10,000 properties and over 600 businesses from the risk of tidal flooding in Bridgwater and the Somerset Levels and Moors. The construction of a tidal surge barrier in the Parrett Estuary will be a major civil engineering project, and careful design and planning is essential to ensure that Bridgwater is protected against extreme tidal events for the next 100 years or more. Consultants, CH2MHill, have just been appointed by the Environment Agency and Sedgemoor District Council to continue detailed technical work. Over the next 18 months, they will be looking at a range of locations, gate arrangements and operating regimes for the barrier. This study will cover the management of water levels, silt and navigation and assess the environmental benefits and impacts. There will be a full programme of information events for interested parties to attend. This programme will be finalised in the coming months to make sure that everyone can input their thoughts and opinions. Once a final location and operational design has been decided upon, there will be a lengthy legal process to achieve Secretary of State approval and powers for construction.

Clean for the Queen At the last meeting of the Friends of Apex Park Improvements Group it was agreed to take part in the 'Clean for the Queen National Clean -up'. The Model Boat Club has offered to use their 'rescue' boat to help clear the boating lake. Winds blowing over Apex Park cause litter to be blown into the water and thus it becomes a danger for the swans and wildlife. Anyone wishing to help 'clean-up' is welcome to join 'The Friends' from 10am on Friday 4th March. There was a steady flow of families coming to Santa's Grotto in the park before Christmas and we wish all our visitors a very Happy New Year. We welcome dog owners with their pets into the park. Please keep the dogs on leads and please take their donations to the bins provided.
Sedgemoor Ramblers – Birthday Celebrations Sedgemoor Ramblers celebrate 40 years of walking this year. Plenty of walking is available throughout February; we will be visiting the Mendips, the Quantocks, Wookey Hole and Brean Down. One of the Sedgemoor Ramblers February Highlights will be a walk through the beautiful snowdrop valley, so why not join us to enjoy the snowdrops in all their glory! Our winter programme is now available from Tourist Information Offices and on our website www.sedgemoorramblers.co.uk. Our main walking day is Sunday but we have popular monthly shorter walks on Saturdays. Throughout the spring and summer we also have weekly short evening walks, usually with an optional pub meal afterwards. Sedgemoor Ramblers is a local group within Ramblers. New walkers are invited to walk a few times with the group before becoming a member. We are a friendly and sociable group who share a love of the outdoors and we would be pleased to hear from you. CCTV: A Year in Numbers Sedgemoor District Council’s CCTV department monitors 145 CCTV cameras across Sedgemoor and the two neighbouring authorities of Taunton Deane and South Somerset. In addition to this we also have a number of dedicated Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras. During 2015, Sedgemoor’s CCTV team dealt with 3850 incidents resulting in 1060 people being arrested. These figures are for live incidents monitored and recorded by the CCTV operators. These figures do not include incidents or arrest figures for crimes that were dealt with through post incident investigations by the police where CCTV footage was used therefore, arrest figures will be higher than the 1060 recorded by CCTV. Broken down into Local Authority areas, Sedgemoor had 1522 incidents resulting in 427 arrests, Taunton Deane had 1678 incidents resulting in 453 arrests, with South Somerset having 650 incidents resulting in 180 arrests. Sedgemoor District Council’s CCTV Operators work in the CCTV Control Room 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. A spokesperson for Sedgemoor District Council’s CCTV team said: ‘2015 has been a challenging year as the department has been busy throughout, but it has also been a time for celebration as the team celebrated its 21st birthday. Since the department opened in 1994 it has helped thousands of people who have been victims of crime, probably without them even knowing it. We have also helped police to recover stolen vehicles, find missing children and vulnerable adults who may be considering suicide. We also detect violent offenders and people carrying weapons or firearms. We help to locate those offenders who commit theft and burglary, and offenders who have evaded capture and are sought by the police. The CCTV team continue to work closely with Avon and Somerset Police, those in the retail and pub trade, through the radio link scheme, and our Local Authority partners to get the best results and make the areas we monitor as safe as possible.’ 18

Windows 10 – have you got the latest update?
November saw the first big update to Windows 10 which fixed minor issues and provided some new features. It would seem that not everybody has this update, so this is how to check that your Windows 10 machine does. The easiest way to check for this update is to right click on the white start button (bottom left hand corner of the desktop). A menu will appear and if the background is dark grey then you have the update. If the menu background is very light grey/white, then you don’t. To get the update, click Start, then Settings. A box will appear with the last icon titled “Update & Security”. Click this icon and you should see a list of updates. It may possibly be prompting you to click “Restart” which will start the update process. I would recommend you install these updates and then check to see if the right click on the Start button provides a menu with a dark grey background. It is also worth revisiting the “Update & Security” section to make sure that there are no further updates to install, but if there are, I would recommend that you continue to install these updates. Should you need any support with this, one of my team is available to visit and help. Please call me on 07973 536299 or email neil@e-cps.co.uk. Warning on attempts at getting your personal details / accessing your computer There continues to be sustained attempts at accessing personal details by foreign call centres, who often pretend to be a genuine company. This can be from a cold call, email or worse, by people searching for help online, and then ringing a phone number that appears to be genuine, but often reroutes to a fake IT support company abroad. I am too often seeing the results of people being tricked, with people from all walks of life being taken in by such scams. Everybody is at risk, so please be very careful who you trust to access your computer or give information to over the phone. 20 years of IT support 2016 sees our 20th year anniversary of providing IT support in the Somerset area. We started in 1996 providing part-time computer help to home users, and turned into a limited company in 2005 employing several members of staff and providing a full support function. Don’t waste your love
Effective affection: buy better to be sure your giving will impress. By Nick Cater. 'Tis February; time for lovers in Burnham-on-Sea to do like birds do, and start to bill and coo. For the true origin of Valentine's Day is not with any of history's three St. Valentines, but our feathered friends and one of our oldest authors, Chaucer. In a 1382 book, he noted that the 14th February saint's day was also believed to be when birds paired up. Fast forward 600 years and here are top tips for declaring your love for your present or future mate without filling your bin with £100+ a-tonne burial-bound rubbish: • Look for cards made from recycled paper, or forget commercial for DIY - handwritten romantic poetry is great - and ensure it is recycled or good enough to be treasured forever. Alternatively, try a beautiful e-card that can become their screensaver or wallpaper. • For flowers, think local and growable, like a plant in a pot or for the garden, not a bunch flown half way round the world to fade awfully fast. Home compost wilted flowers with card and all garden waste, fruit and veg peelings, tea bags and coffee grounds. • It is nice to eat out, and Burnham has plenty to tempt, but a home cooked meal from scratch (not a packet shoved in the microwave) shows commitment and care; devour the leftovers later to show your devotion, and add anything that cannot be eaten or composted to your food waste bin to become electricity. • Go wild with passion, and adopt an animal. Or show how your love will last by planting a tree, either in the garden or a charity one, to hold back global warming. • Turn pre-loved into re-loved: seek out something special with a past, from jewellery to clothes or furniture, and give it a future. Charity shops will welcome you with open arms. For more on wasting far less, recycling much more and saving plenty of cash, see www. somersetwaste.gov.uk. Nick Cater is Senior Communications Officer at Somerset Waste Partnership, which manages waste and recycling services on behalf of all local authorities in Somerset.

People of Burnham-on-Sea to walk and run themselves proud for Sport Relief
The Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Mile is back – and it’s coming to Bay Centre Field. The town is set to host its first ever Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Mile on Sunday 20th March between 2pm and 5pm and needs local people to come together and make themselves proud by entering now at www.sportrelief. com. Local heroes from Burnham and Highbridge will be walking and running themselves proud during the Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Mile to raise life-changing money for Sport Relief 2016. The colourful, cheerful and eager Milers will be doing their bit to make a difference to people living across the UK and the world’s poorest communities, setting off from far side of the Bay Centre field, and is set to be an incredible event. Burnham-on-Sea Miler Jonathan Smith said: “The Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Mile in Burnham-on-Sea is here and it’s your time to walk or run yourself proud. From little ones with their mums and dads, to runners up against the clock, there’s something for everyone to make themselves feel proud on this special day.” Sport Relief is back from Friday 18th to Sunday 20th March, and there are more ways than ever for you to take part, change lives and feel proud. Whether you get sponsored to enter an event at the Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Games or fundraise with friends and family at home, work or school, you’ll help people living incredibly tough lives. In fact, half of all the money raised by the public is spent right here at home in the UK, with the other half used to make a difference in the world’s poorest communities. There will be music, a 1610 Sports Instructor to provide a warm-up for you to enjoy, bouncy castle for young ones to enjoy, and entertainment from local groups. Gardening Jobs for FEBRUARY At this time of year the weather can be most variable, so our garden tasks are very much weather related. Make sure mowers and other garden machinery are in good working order for the seasons ahead. If they are not too wet, spike or fork lawns to improve their drainage. Finish any plans for sowing and planting and purchase new seeds if required. Shrubs and trees can still be planted if conditions are suitable. Complete the pruning of fruit trees and bushes and give them a dressing of high potash fertilizer like sulphate of potash. Use cloches to warm up the soil for later planting and sowing.
Inside the protection of a greenhouse try starting shallots, onion sets, broad beans and peas in small pots of compost for planting out next month. Only start sowing tender plants like tomatoes and peppers if you provide extra heat for the emerging seedlings. Continue chitting seed potatoes in a light, frost free place. Make a start with rose pruning and prune summer flowering clematis right back to a pair of strong looking buds. If conditions are right, sow some parsnips outside but bear in mind they may take up to four weeks to germinate. Some people choose to wait until April or May to sow their parsnips and still achieve good results.
For more tips, why not join your local gardening group? The Burnham and District Horticultural Society meet at 7.30pm on the third Monday of each month (except December) at the Community Centre, Berrow Road. The next meeting is on Monday 15th February with a talk from Sarah Chouglay – ‘Daffadowndillies’. All welcome. Members of the Society free, visitors £1.50.
