LOCALREACH BURNHAM, LOCALREACH BERROW & HIGHBRIDGE BURNHAM & HIGHBRIDGE
From the editor
ADVERTISING
Welcome to the January edition of LocalReach, and may I take this opportunity to wish all our readers, advertisers and contributors a very Happy New Year! Within this month’s edition there is information about taking up tennis, watching some local shows, and supporting some of the local groups that are involved in much needed fundraising for some of our much needed services, such as the Somerset Unit for Radiotherapy Equipment (SURE) or the Friends of Burnham-on-Sea War Memorial Hospital. The Highbridge Festival of Arts will be soon with us, so ensure you pick up a programme to watch some of our local talent within the performing arts. With this year being a leap year, there is even a special category for all those ladies wishing to make that special proposal publically – are you game? I hope you find this month’s edition interesting and informative. Please forward your information about your community group, charity or non-profit making organisation to ensure you receive publicity from the 10,000 households we deliver to every month. The family business you’ll be at home with When you buy windows, doors and conservatories there are three things you do need to be sure about - value-formoney, quality and the workmanship of the installers. And the one thing you most certainly don’t need is being pressured into making decisions. Kingfisher can set your mind at rest on all counts. We are a long established family firm and family values dictate the way we do business. So much so that many of our customers become friends and, in turn, recommend us to their friends. Our product range is comprehensive and consistently keenly priced. It includes PVCu, timber and aluminium and can be viewed, at your leisure, at our East Brent showroom. If you invite us to give you a quotation, we will take the time to establish your requirements exactly, explain the options and choices to you, give advice where required, take careful measurements and give you a clear, detailed breakdown of costs. We will then leave you to make a decision in your own time. You will not be harassed or badgered.
customers, Mrs Dingle, puts it, ‘Kingfisher’s whole approach is different, there is no pressure and, to be honest, it’s like dealing with friends. As far as the fitting was concerned, not only was the work completed with infinite care, but the installers were a pleasure to have around’. Please visit our web site www.thekingfisherfamily.com, call us on 01278 760616, email us at hello@thekingfisherfamily.com, or visit our East Brent showroom. A family welcome awaits you. We are open from 9am until 5pm Monday to Friday and 9.30am until 12.30pm on Saturday

SURE SURE is the name given to the Somerset Unit for Radiotherapy Equipment, based at the Beacon Centre in Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton: www.surecharity.org.uk. During 2014 we were able to provide the Beacon Centre with 10 various pieces of equipment or systems to a value of £121,168.21. All of these items benefit cancer patients at the centre by improving the radiotherapy treatment in some way so as to provide better accuracy, efficiency, comfort and diagnosis. In October 2014 SURE launched a fundraising campaign (with the support of the Taunton and Somerset NHS Foundation Trust) targeted at raising £500,000 by March 2017 to purchase a new Big Bore CT Scanner/Simulator for the Beacon Centre, as the existing Scanner provided by SURE when the Beacon Centre opened in May 2009 will reach the end of its life in 2017/18. By the beginning of 2015 SURE had ring-fenced £165,000 towards this project. The new machine will of course include the latest innovations so that treatment can be further improved. If we did not provide this machine then once again patients would have to go to Bristol for patient planning which in itself is traumatic, and there will be the risk of information being disconnected. Having had treatment at the Beacon Centre over four years ago, I am trying to raise awareness of SURE in Burnham and Highbridge. I am happy to attend meetings and give short talks to clubs and give a talk about the charity. If anyone feels that they would like to help organise an event, or would like a talk for a club please could you contact me, Bernard Spilsbury on 01278 785727.
The Huntspill Art Group We are looking forward to seeing you starting 2016 with enthusiasm on Wednesday afternoon 6th January in the East Huntspill Village Hall. All past, present and new members welcome - we have three places left! It’s £3.50 per afternoon session including tea etc. Loan of materials available if required. We also have our own picture mounting equipment. For more information, please phone Brian Freestone (secretary) on 01278 760759 or email group leader: kathsouthview@sky.

With a cast of old and new faces it will include John Robinson as Dame Dolly Dumpling, Phil Crossland as the very Idle Jack, Pat Harris as Captain Cuttlefish, Judith James as his very silly mate, Scupper, Kait Jarvis as our hero, Dick Whittington, Abbi Fear as his love interest, Alice Fitzwarren, Rachel Nicol as the energetic Tommy The Cat, Samantha Nicol as cockney speaking, Fairy Bowells, Linda Bond as the evil Queen Rat, Robin Hewlett as Alderman Fitzwarren, and Liz Bailey as the Sultana. So come and see this pantomime which will take you from the streets of London town, on board a ship and end up on a very strange island, with plenty of singing, dancing, audience participation and plenty and plenty of comedy and slapstick. The pantomime will be performed at Brean Village Hall from Monday 15th February until Saturday 20th February. Tickets are available from Brean Post Office on 01278 751225.

Listen to the silence - noise equipment seized in Highbridge A large amount of noise equipment such as an amplifiers, speakers and turntables – all capable of producing very loud bass music - has been seized from a flat in Highbridge, by Sedgemoor District Council’s Environmental Health Team. Over the past months, there have been regular complaints about loud levels of music coming from the flat and there have been complaints of noise from various neighbours since 2010. Environmental Health Officers described the levels of noise as being loud drum and bass music, which proved to be very distressing to neighbours and often affected their sleep and health. The occupant was warned on several occasions by Environmental Health and Stonewater Housing Association, who own the property, to keep noise to a reasonable level. However, all warnings were completely ignored and severe disturbance was caused to others living in the building. An Abatement Notice was served on the person responsible and again this was ignored on a regular basis. After obtaining a warrant, the property was entered with the assistance of Avon and Somerset Police and Stonewater, and all equipment capable of producing the noise nuisance was seized. A prosecution will now be taken by the Council for breach of a noise abatement notice and the Council will seek a confiscation order to dispose of the seized equipment. This operation demonstrates Sedgemoor District Council’s willingness, where appropriate, to use its full range of enforcement powers to tackle this sort anti-social and nuisance behaviour which can seriously affect the quality of people’s lives.
It pays to pick up… After Sedgemoor District Council’s dog wardens were alerted to a ‘dog poo hotspot’ in and around Burnham-on-Sea town centre, random patrols were stepped up in the area. To that end, a resident was issued with a £75 fixed penalty notice this week for failing to remove their dog faeces from a public place in the town centre of Burnham. Sedgemoor’s dog wardens will issue fixed penalty notices to irresponsible dog owners who behave in this anti-social manner, which is unpleasant and unnecessary, affecting other residents and visitors to the district. With sufficient evidence of dog fouling offences, dog owners will always be challenged and either fined or prosecuted for nonremoval of their dog faeces in a public place. Over the past five years, Sedgemoor Dog Wardens have issued 60 fixed penalty notices for dog fouling.

Apprenticeships at the Top of the Agenda
The government have just released a ten point plan to outline how they will achieve their 3 million apprenticeships target. Senior apprenticeship official Jennifer Coupland, head of the Department for Business, Skills and Innovation and Department for Education Apprenticeship Unit, explained that this means, “This target actually means having more than one apprentice starting an apprenticeship every minute for the next five years — so that is quite a sobering thought. “The modern apprenticeship is very different from its predecessors. You can take on an apprentice at any level from Level 2 (GCSE) to Level 5 (degree), and the first round of the strategy is all on quality and putting the employers in control of designing the standards that the apprenticeships train against. This will help ensure that they really are competent to do the job that they have been training to do. “This bit of the strategy is around the supply and delivery of training and working with providers, and getting training providers geared up so that they’re in a good position to offer the training that employers will want.” Somerset Skills & Learning CIC has recently gone through the new process when they left the council and became a social enterprise in August this year. Marketing Manager Ade Bowen told us, “Being a Somerset based provider, we are well placed to work with local Somerset businesses to provide the apprentices they need.” An apprentice can be any age over 16 years old. Many of Somerset Skills & Learning CIC’s apprentices are over 25 years old where people take on an apprenticeship as part of their current employment. This gives them access to specialist training in order to improve their skills. There are also plenty of opportunities for 16 to 24 year olds as well, where businesses are looking to train someone from the start of their career. “Somerset Skills & Learning apprenticeships can be moulded to suit your company needs,” Simon Wood, Managing Director of Glazeguard told us. They have a Business Administration apprentice working with them. “Having an apprentice has allowed other team members to concentrate more on their main role and this makes for a more effective business.” Their apprentice, Libby Rogers says, “Working at the same time as learning on the job is one of the great benefits of learning through an apprenticeship”. To find out more about how taking on an apprentice can help your business grow, call their apprentice hotline on 01278 426828 or email enquiries@sslcic.co.uk. Check it out Sedgemoor District Council is warning people to check that phone calls are really from Sedgemoor. The Council has had three calls recently from worried residents, who have received phone calls from people purporting to be working with Sedgemoor District Council. The tricksters tell customers that they are due a reduction in their Council Tax Band and ask them for their bank details for a refund to be made. If a customer has recently received a phone call and been asked for their bank details they should phone the Council to check the validity before disclosing any details If, at any time, a customer has any doubt about the identity of a person telephoning and claiming to work for Sedgemoor they should request a name and extension number and ring 01278 435435 (Sedgemoor Direct) to confirm the caller’s identity. 20 Burnham 2016 January.indd 20

GARDENING JOBS FOR JANUARY Light levels will noticeably improve towards the end of this month. Consider warming up some soil outside for early sowing and planting later on. Cover the ground with plastic sheeting, fleece or cloches. Only work outdoors when the soil is not too wet or frozen. New trees and shrubs can be planted if conditions are right. If conditions are not suitable, any new plants can be simply heeled into a shallow trench positioned in a sheltered part of the garden. They can stay like this for several weeks if necessary, until conditions improve. Make sure all your planning for this year has been done, including purchasing new seeds, composts and other sundries for sowing and planting ahead.
Any forced spring bulbs in pots can be brought into the home, but try and keep them cool for a week or two. Only sow seeds indoors if you can provide adequate heat for the resulting seedlings to develop and grow. If you have no heat, wait until later before growing seeds inside. Seed potatoes will be available this month. Stand them upright in trays or egg boxes with the rose end uppermost. Choose a light, frost free place to keep them. If you fancy having a go at forcing some rhubarb, cover the rhubarb crown with a large, lightproof container. The new pink sticks of rhubarb should be ready in about six weeks.
FOR MORE TIPS, WHY NOT JOIN YOUR LOCAL GARDENING GROUP? For more tips, why not join your local gardening group? The Burnham and District Horticultural Society meet at 7.30pm on the third Monday of each month (except December) at the Community Centre, Berrow Road. The next meeting is on Monday 18th January 2016, when the Gold Club will be demonstrating Winter Hanging Baskets and Primrose Balls. All welcome. Members of the Society free, visitors £1.50.
