Twiddlemuffs Do you knit? Have you heard of Twiddlemuffs? They’re a knitted muff with items attached so that a patient with dementia can twiddle in their hands on the wards at the RD&E. People with dementia often have restless hands and like to keep their hands occupied. It provides a wonderful source of visual, tactile and sensory stimulation and at the same time keeping hands snug and warm. We are hoping that volunteers will come forward to put their knitting skills to good use to help us to create more Twiddlemuffs as part of our dementia awareness work. The soft knitted muffs contain strands of textured ribbons, beads and various fabrics attached both inside and outside and we are hoping volunteers will put their knitting skills to good use. This project is part of a wide range of work to support patients with dementia in a project called ForgetMeNot and we would welcome your help. If you don’t knit but can donate wool, buttons, beads or ribbon please get in touch. Please contact Suzanne.oneill@alzheimers.org.uk or north.somerset@alzheimers.org.uk

Update on Virtual Reality I would like to keep you up to speed with the latest technology, an important security tip, and to firstly – as mentioned in my previous article - remind you about the upcoming expiration for the free upgrade to Windows 10 once again, as this is very important for everyone to acknowledge. If you are running Windows 7 or 8.1 on your laptop or desktop as you read this, and keep putting off the free upgrade to Windows 10 – an upgrade that is, in my experience, very beneficial to any home user – do be aware that after July 29th (The 1-year anniversary of Windows 10) the upgrade will chargeable, costing $119+ (approx. £82+) according to a Microsoft spokesperson. Do make up your minds soon; remember: If you don’t get along with it, you can revert back to Windows 7/8.1 within 30 days anyway, so no harm done. Are you aware of the recent VR (Virtual Reality) trend that has piqued the interest of most technology enthusiasts, sporting products like the HTC Vive or the Oculus Rift? These are wearable headsets that enter you into a virtual 360-degree world, breaking a new barrier for many applications of technology – healthcare, fashion, engineering, sport, education and so on. Interestingly, Microsoft has developed a headset called the “HoloLens” – the only headset thus far to provide “Mixed Reality” – a blend between the real world and virtual elements – proving many unique advantages over conventional virtual headsets. This device runs the “Windows Holographic” operating system which is a version of Windows 10 with extra VR features. Navigate to the following URL to watch a video demonstrating this technology: tinyurl.com/WinHolographic. Lastly, it is important you are aware of the increasing number of telephone scams that are occurring in the Somerset area, pretending to be calling from your internet provider (ISP); no matter how much information they know about you – be it your ISP details, your name, email, address, etc. – do not give them any information about yourself, as they are after your money or your passwords. Your ISP will never call you unless you are actually having issues with your landline/broadband that you have reported yourself. What are you waiting for? Do something inspiring today and enrol on a course at Bridgwater College. We offer a vast number of courses, which may help you train for work, progress your career, gain a new qualification or learn new skills and hobbies. There are hundreds of courses for adult learners with part-time, full-time or workplace learning options. A Government loan is available for learners who are aged 19+ and starting an eligible course at Levels 3, 4, 5 or 6 from 1 August 2016. Any qualification previously achieved will not prevent the learner from accessing a loan and being eligible for the loan is not assessed on income; credit checks will not be carried out. The loan does not have to be paid back until the learner earns over £21,000 per annum. Access to Higher Education Advanced Learner Loans are written off if the learner continues their studies at university. Student Angelina Clerkin who studied Access to Higher Education – Health and Social Care said, “Before I had heard of the Advanced Learner Loan I had given up on going to college and being able to get into university. I did not have the money to pay for the Access course myself this year, and the loan has meant that I can concentrate on my studying, not how to pay for my studies. I'm now able to go to university in London, fulfil my ambition of studying mental health nursing, and start the career I've wanted for a long time.” If you are looking for the next step in education, why not study a Degree with Bridgwater College – Tuesday 5 July 2016 will see the opening of Clearing 2016. If you haven’t made up your mind yet or you want to change what you have already applied for, Clearing gives you the opportunity to do so. Clearing is for all course applications through UCAS including local courses with Bridgwater College. With a wide range of Foundation Degrees and Top-up Degrees located on your doorstep, get your Degree Level qualification with a discount of more than 20% compared with other Higher Education providers. GARDENING JOBS FOR JULY Most plants are planted out now so your job is to look after them. Keep deadheading your flowering plants and keep them well watered and fed when necessary. Prune any shrubs that have finished flowering to encourage new shoots for next year’s blooms. Cut hedging if required and mow lawns regularly. Net any ripening fruit, unless you are growing it in a fruit cage, remember to pick fruit when it is young and fresh. Cut out old canes and tie in new canes on early summer fruiting raspberries. When strawberries have finished fruiting cut off any old leaves and tidy up the beds. If you have some well rooted

strawberry runners transplant them into new beds making sure the crown of the plant in just above soil level. Keep greenhouses well ventilated and damp down floors, if necessary, on hot days. Feed greenhouse crops regularly using a high potash feed for your fruiting crops. There is still time to sow runner beans and French beans for a late crop and continue sowing broccoli, lettuce, kale, winter salad leaves, spring cabbage, turnips and radishes. Make sure you have fed your roses after their first flush of blooms, use a proper feed at the rate of a handful per plant, sprinkled round and hoe it in, watering as well if necessary. Keep that hoe going and remove those weeds.

FOR MORE TIPS, WHY NOT JOIN YOUR LOCAL GARDENING GROUP?

For more tips why not join your local gardening group?
