The family business you’ll be at home with When you buy windows, doors and conservatories there are three things you do need to be sure about - value-formoney, quality and the workmanship of the installers. And the one thing you most certainly don’t need is being pressured into making decisions. Kingfisher can set your mind at rest on all counts. Route 60+ Somerset Road Safety will be holding a free Route 60+ workshop at Burnham Fire Station on Tuesday 15th March at 10am. Route 60+ is a presentation aimed at senior drivers, with the aim of addressing not only how vehicles have changed over the years, but also how our own driving skills and habits may have changed and how we can go about updating those skills. Driving provides independence and is a skill that should be nurtured for as long as possible. If a driver stops driving for a period of time it is, inevitably, much more difficult to try and start again at a later date, and this workshop is designed to help you keep your licence for as long as safely possible. The presentation itself lasts approximately 60 minutes. There will be opportunities to talk to members of the road safety team about any driving or road safety concerns you may have. Representatives from Age Concern, local Fire and Police services and other agencies will be attending to provide advice. There will also be the opportunity for health checks with qualified professionals. Free refreshments will be available and the atmosphere is very relaxed. You don't even have to be over 60 to come along! There is no need to book in advance, simply turn up on the day. The presentation will usually run 45-60 minutes after the start time, so if you wish to view it, please turn up in plenty of time. Those attending will receive a free bag including a hi-vis jacket and a copy of the Highway Code. Details of accredited driving instructors will be available should any attendees require further support with their individual driving issues. Contact Somerset Road Safety on 01823 423430 or roadsafety@somerset.gov.uk, for more information.

Book Fair March 2016 Every month at the Brent Knoll Bazaar, we have a book stall, which has always been very popular. We always try to have different books on sale each month so that our regular customers have an opportunity to find new works by their favourite authors or can be inspired by different writers or topics. This means we retain a store of books which is larger than that on display in any month and allows us to rotate the offerings. We are also very lucky to have additional volumes supplied to us regularly, which can mean we obtain more than we can comfortably store. To alleviate this, we have an occasional weeding out of books which have been on our hands for some while, or are in a bad condition. Only the last are thrown away; most are recycled at local charity events or shops. Recently we have had a considerable number of good books given to us, which means we do not have space to hold all of our stock, but we thought that many of them could be of interest to people in Bent Knoll or in the surrounding towns and villages, so, before disposing of quite a few, we thought it may be a nice idea to have a Book Fair, when all our books could be on display. So we have selected Saturday the 19th and Sunday the 20th of March, from 10am to 4pm each day, when the hall will be full of books for sale. Do come and bring your friends and family. For more information, contact Bob Filmer on 01278 760 760 or Twitter @BobFilmer.

Well-known West Country railway artist Alan Ward is exhibiting the largest collection of S&D railway paintings dedicated to the this well-loved and remembered railway. Alan has scoured the country to gather original works from patrons and private collectors of his paintings over many years, added to which will be a sparkling array of new original oil paintings and sketches amounting to over 100 works produced especially for this once in a lifetime event - many of which will be for sale. Notable paintings on show include the ‘Last Pines’ depicting the preparation of the 9F 2-10-0 Evening Star for the last ever run on S&D metals to Bournemouth prior to re-routing the service in 1962. Another painting of note will be ‘Requiem for the Somerset and Dorset’ portraying Southern Pacific Battle of Britain locomotive Biggin Hill and West Country light pacific Bude, passing over Midford Viaduct on the final run south on the weekend of closure in March 1966. It is hoped that related societies will have a presence at the show together with other attractions and displays of ‘0’ Gauge locomotives working the line at the time, together with CD presentations of the railway and its infrastructure. The show has its preview on Monday evening 29th February and is open to the public on Tuesday 1st March. Admission is free. Also available will be souvenir brochures and catalogue of works for sale.

Neighbourhood Planning – an update and progress report Since the start of work on a neighbourhood plan for the Burnham and Highbridge area, a group of local residents have been working hard. After an initial survey to gauge people’s concerns, work began on draft policies to cover Burnham Town Centre and Esplanade. Consultation on these took place both online and via household leaflets. 530 responses were received with all suggestions receiving favourable responses – varying from 67% to 85% in favour. Some minor modifications were made after analysing the comments received. Two groups have been working – one on Highbridge and one on Housing. The Housing group is working on the principles behind any new developments rather than their possible locations, owing to Sedgemoor reviewing how many houses should be built in the area, and won’t have produced an initial suggestion until the summer. The Highbridge group is not restricting its considerations to the town centre but is looking at the whole of the urban area. It is hoped that it will be able to put ideas out for consultation in the near future. One further topic being considered at the moment, is energy generation and resources. With wind power, solar panels, tidal lagoons and fracking all possible in the area, we are looking at whether it makes sense to deal with them in the neighbourhood plan. As always, the key question is “can we add value by doing so?” Volunteers to join an energy group are welcome. It has also been suggested that we look at a Tourism policy but, so far, no one is sure what we could say and no one has volunteered to participate in such a group – so it may not happen! If you have access to the internet and want to contribute in any way – or just be kept in touch (our Google group has over 300 members) then note our web site: http://www.burnhamandhighbridgeneighbourhoodplan.org/ Our email address is ourneighbourhoodplan@gmail.com. The website contains all the important documents we have produced, and links to items such as Sedgemoor and national planning policies. We hope to complete drawing up the plan by early autumn. Then it will be submitted to an Inspector for comments, after which it will go to a referendum. If approved, it becomes planning policy.

Concert - A Mass For Peace On 23rd April 2016 at 7.30pm, the Burnham & Highbridge Choral Society will be performing the ever-popular, 'The Armed Man' A Mass for Peace by Carl Jenkins at St. Andrew's Church, Burnham-on-Sea. This will be the second time that the choir have sung this piece of music. The first time was in 2006, when they were the first choir in Somerset to perform it. In 2015 some of the members were lucky enough to sing this at the Royal Albert Hall, in front of the composer who was in the audience. This year's performance will be led by their M.D, Nicholas Bromilow. They will be accompanied by a small vibrant orchestral ensemble and two soloists, Katy Garden and Amon-Ra Twilley. The choir will also be singing a selection from 'Joseph and his Amazing Technicolour Dream Coat'. 18

Do you have a Windows Vista Computer?
When I visit people to fix various computer problems around the Burnham & Highbridge area, I quite often see laptops running Microsoft's Vista operating system. This operating system was released in 2006 and was installed on most new computer until Windows 7 was released in 2009. It was probably known as Microsoft's worst operating system for numerous reasons including lack of compatibility with existing software & hardware. Most people learnt to deal with and use Vista and with the release of Windows 7, Microsoft (at a price) offered an upgrade package, which many opted to take in the search of faster performance and better features. For those who still are using Vista, machines tend to be very slow, albeit functional. Recently Google Chrome has been advising Vista users that they should consider upgrading their computer as Chrome will no longer be supported on Vista. Many resist the urge to upgrade because their Vista computer does what is needed, albeit in a typically slow and unreliable way. Some are forced to upgrade due to equipment failure and often are very worried about how to use such new systems such as Windows 10. Over many years, I have met people and put their mind at rest, as new machines can be setup to work very similarly to their old machines. When a new computer is purchased, it is often not setup in the way that people find familiar, so if you find yourself with the machine that you struggle to use, then please see our advert on this page, as we can often help to make the new machine much more similar in operation to the previous equipment. For example, with Windows 10 there is the new Edge browser - did you know that Internet Explorer is also built into Windows 10, but not obvious when you use it. Also other Internet browsers such as Firefox or Google Chrome can still be used. Existing data (photos/documents/e-mails and so on) can be copied onto the new machine Please get in touch if you are considering buying a new computer (we sell both laptops and desktop computers), or if you already have a machine that you are struggling with. I can visit you at your home or business to help get you to a point that you are happy with. Neil Buzzard, Director, Computer Problem Solutions Ltd. Tel: 07973 536299 email: neil@e-cps.co.uk

Lambing Fun Day After the heavy rainfall and dark skies the winter months have brought with them, the lighter evenings, glimpse of a snowdrop or two, and new-born lambs jumping around the local fields, are the first signs of spring. At Bridgwater College’s Cannington Centre, lambing season is in full swing. If you haven’t been to the College’s Lambing Fun Day event before, then put the date in your diary for a real treat! As the name suggests, it really is a great day out for all the family, and takes place this year on Sunday 13 March, 11am to 4pm at Rodway Farm in Cannington, TA5 2PJ. The event improves year on year, with more to see and do than ever before, a real favourite of the young and young at heart! Tickets can be bought on the day, or visitors can receive a 20% discount if bought in advance online or on production of an advert. Advance tickets can be bought through the College’s online store: www.bridgwater.ac.uk. There are lots of activities lined up for the day, with sheep shearing, milking demonstrations, ferret racing, tractor trailer rides, Somerset Vintage Club Ltd’s machinery displays plus many more. There will also be marquees dedicated to food and drink and children’s activities, and of course a chance to see and hold the ever-so-cute new-born lambs. Jason Gunningham, Assistant Principal for Land-based Studies at the College says: “This event is always very popular and a great way for the community to see the College’s working farm in Cannington. So many people put on their wellies and join us for the day, immersing themselves in all the activities and watching the demonstrations. The farmers market will be especially popular this year with visitors browsing the product stalls and purchasing local produce. “We’ve often had lambs born during the event day, and it is a wonderful opportunity for visitors to see the new-borns and enjoy a cuddle with some of the more confident lambs. The feedback we receive from the public is always very positive, and we are looking forward to this year’s event and welcoming many new visitors to Rodway Farm.” www.bridgwater.ac.uk

Easy ways to make space in your bin Get ‘em gone: recycle bulky plastics and cartons fast By Nick Cater Amid debate about proposals for kerbside collection changes, the benefits to Burnham-on-Sea residents of getting rid of waste faster have gained far less attention than they deserve. The key first part of the plan would add lots of extra materials for weekly recycling: plastic pots, tubs and trays (such as yoghurt pots, margarine and ice cream tubs, and fruit trays), plus food and drink cartons, small electrical items, and household batteries. The cartons – like those made by Tetra Pak – and all that plastic packaging, may be lightweight, but they are very bulky, taking up significant space in Burnham families’ bins, and many have long urged that they be recycled at the kerbside to slim their rubbish bins. By making it far easier to recycle much more and get rid of it faster, the planned improvements could well see the weight of recycling up by more than a quarter, and the weight of waste in rubbish bins fall by the same amount. And with no cartons and much less plastic, rubbish volumes will shrink far more. That will curb bulging bins, fly-tips or overflowing waste. These were the impressive results in trials with more than 1,000 Somerset families of all shapes and sizes. One resident said: “I was amazed how little rubbish was left once all the additional materials were recycled.” No wonder trial families gave the changes an overwhelming 86% approval. They also liked new container options, including tough space-saving squash-flat recycling bags. And the proposals include additional capacity and support for those with extra needs, from children in nappies to those using adult hygiene products. Along with welcome efforts to end the use of landfill in Somerset, these plans – expected to be phased in over two years – would save millions that surely can be better spent on people than their rubbish. For more on wasting far less, recycling much more and saving plenty of cash, including the proposals for extra weekly collections, see www.somersetwaste.gov.uk. Nick Cater is Senior Communications Officer at Somerset Waste Partnership, which manages waste and recycling services on behalf of all local authorities in Somerset.
Sea Dogs Festival
This is a new event in Burnham-on-Sea, planned for Saturday 30th April and taking place on the beach and South Esplanade. The festival is a celebration of all things dog-related, and the organisers want to encourage responsible dog ownership and more dog walkers to come and enjoy the town. Expect fun dog show competitions like waggiest tail and young handler, demonstrations of agility, and stalls with a wide range of dog accessories and information. The Path to Power - Lesley Smith as Margaret Thatcher
Love her or loathe her, Margaret Thatcher was without doubt one of the most successful women of the 20th century. From her roots in a grocer’s shop in Grantham, she rose to study chemistry at Oxford and became the first female Prime Minister. Lesley Smith brings a portrayal of an extraordinary woman to audiences who have lived through interesting political times. Using entirely the words of Margaret Thatcher, from the autobiography ‘The Path to Power,’ we will hear her describe Thatcher’s journey to 10 Downing Street. Lesley Smith has been captivating audiences the length and breadth of the country with her incredibly accurate portrayals of historical women’s stories. See Lesley bring Maggie to life on the anniversary of her election victory in 1979 – Tuesday 3rd May. Doors at 7pm for a prompt 7.30pm start. Tickets for this one night only unique theatrical performance are £14 (£12 for Trade Union members). Price includes a welcome drink – tickets available from the Princess Theatre & Arts Centre Box Office.

The Beginning of a Litter Free Burnham-on-Sea Beach Burnham-on-Sea’s new coastal officer is calling on the community to work together to reduce marine and beach litter and, most importantly, improve Burnham’s bathing water quality. Burnham’s popular beach suffered a ‘Poor’ rating last November after bathing water quality standards become much stricter across Europe. Whilst the quality of the seawater is no worse than it has been in the past, it was clear that more needed to be done to involve the local community in finding a solution, in addition to work already underway by Wessex Water, Sedgemoor District Council and the Environment Agency. Harriet Yates-Smith is running the independent community campaign called Litter Free Coast and Sea Somerset, a project led by the Severn Estuary Partnership. Harriet wants to harness Burnham’s strong community spirit to reduce marine litter and improve the bathing water quality by encouraging people to consider and reduce their own impacts on water quality through targeted campaigns, events and education. Harriet has a background in environmental science, marine management and community engagement, and will use her experience to help shape the campaign alongside the people of Burnham. She is requesting that community groups, businesses and individuals contact her to talk about what they love about Burnham’s seafront, what they do at the local beaches, what they think are the key issues affecting the water quality in Burnham, and where they think the litter on Burnham beach comes from. After finding out these key questions, Harriet plans to run a community workshop to help decide what issues would be best to tackle and have the most community benefit, and who needs to be involved. Harriet said: “I have been out and about in Burnham for a month now and I can already see how passionate everyone is about their town. The future of Burnham’s bathing waters and keeping the beach free from litter is everyone’s responsibility including local authorities, water companies, dog walkers, farmers, local residents, visitors and businesses. By working together it is possible to make a difference and start reducing our impact on Burnham’s beaches and bathing water.” Please get in touch with Harriet to share your thoughts or to request her to come and speak at your organisation or community group meeting, on the email and number below. Events at Secret World in 2016 Secret World Wildlife Rescue opens to the public on a few special weekends a year. Badger Bonanza from 25th to 28th March kicks off the first of three open weekends at Secret World in 2016. If any badger cubs have been rescued this year, the Easter weekend will be the only chance to get a glimpse of these babies. After their initial one-to-one care, the cubs start their journey through rehabilitation, so it is strictly hands-off and minimal human contact after this. As well as the chance to see a badger cub and other wild animals in Secret World’s care, families can enjoy fun learning activities to give youngsters a rich experience and understanding of the value of nature to their lives. Secret World will be open 10am - 4pm from 25th - 28th March. Entry is free and donations are welcome to support Secret World’s work to rescue, rehabilitate and release injured wildlife. With craft stalls, wildlife talks, children’s games and delicious food on offer, there’s something for everyone at Secret World’s special weekends. Secret World open weekends in 2016: 25th – 28th March – Badger Bonanza; 28th – 30th May – Beaks and Squeaks; 22nd – 24th October – The Secret World of Hedgehogs

Gardening Jobs for MARCH It’s not too early to think about slug protection, so be on the lookout! Top dress containers with fresh compost. There is still time to move deciduous trees and shrubs and plant new perennials. Sow flower seeds for planting out in June. Prune hydrangeas by cutting back to just above a pair of healthy buds. Prune roses back to an outward facing bud and also remove all new growth leaving the bush completely bare. This will leave the bush clean
and help prevent rose diseases. Prune out and remove any dead, diseased and crossing branches from trees and shrubs. After mid-month, as light levels continue to improve, consider sowing some early vegetables. Bear in mind that most seeds require a soil temperature of six degrees C or above to germinate. Seed packs give good advice and instruction, but this is only a guide. Inside, continue sowing and growing on plants that need protection. Remember, good ventilation is important on sunny days.
For more tips, why not join your local gardening group? The Burnham and District Horticultural Society meet at 7.30pm on the third Monday of each month (except December) at the Community Centre, Berrow Road. Members are reminded that on Monday 21st March 2016 we have the Annual General Meeting. This will be followed by a quiz and Irish Bingo. Tea and coffee will be provided free of charge for members this evening.
