From the editor
Welcome to the May edition of Local Reach, with Spring upon us and the spring bank holidays not too far away, the local events are starting up in earnest. Having just completed one of the biggest events I have been involved with – I admire more and more the dedication local people put into our local community. We would like to promote the town and the community activities that are happening through the year, ensure you give us plenty of notice of what you are planning and send across your editorial in good time. This month we see the popular food festival coming to town at the end of the month and the first of the CADs events at the Manor Gardens with Party in the Park – the spring tradition of May Day dancing is being celebrated at Marine Cove, a good start to the season! Take a look inside and see what is coming to the area over the next few weeks. Editorial deadline for June issue is 10th May 2016. The family business you’ll be at home with When you buy windows, doors and conservatories there are three things you do need to be sure about - value-formoney, quality and the workmanship of the installers. And the one thing you most certainly don’t need is being pressured into making decisions. Kingfisher can set your mind at rest on all counts. We are a long established family firm and family values dictate the way we do business. So much so that many of our customers become friends and, in turn, recommend us to their friends. Our product range is comprehensive and consistently keenly priced. It includes PVCu, timber and aluminium and can be viewed, at your leisure, at our East Brent showroom. If you invite us to give you a quotation, we will take the time to establish your requirements exactly, explain the options and choices to you, give advice where required, take careful measurements and give you a clear, detailed breakdown of costs. We will then leave you to make a decision in your own time. You will not be harassed or badgered.

As far as the fitting was concerned, not only was the work completed with infinite care, but the installers were a pleasure to have around’. Theatre in Shops and Drama in the High Street A heart felt thank you to everyone who visited on Saturday 16th April and visited the first event run by BOS Community Theatre Group. We are already planning our next event and looking at collating the written work that was submitted by local people. In order to take projects forward we would welcome feedback on the recent theatre event in town. If anyone is able to email us at BOScommunitytheatre@hotmail.com their responses to the following questions it will help develop future ideas. - Did you visit the town of April 16th? - How far do you have to travel to come into town? - How do you hear about events happening in town? - Did you enjoy the day? - How many performances did you watch – was there a favourite? - Did you like the idea of seeing live theatre in shops and businesses? - What future events would you support in the town? There is a lot going on around the town and it would be useful to share this information with the network of organisers we are in contact with, the town has a wealth of talented and motivated people – this is why I love where I live. Thank you Jacqui Strong and Selina Keedwell Project Managers with BOS Community Theatre Group.

Burnham Area Youth Centre 2016 AGM This year’s BAY Centre Annual General Meeting is a special day for us, for it marks the 50th anniversary of the building (Originally completed in 1966). The date of the AGM will therefore be Wednesday 11th May, starting at 7.30 pm, in the centre’s main hall. To mark the occasion we are anticipating a display of BAY Centre memorabilia in the centre’s training room – Photo’s, documents, etc. which will be open for visitors during that day, and there will be the opportunity to browse and remember what the building means to them. If anyone has any memorabilia and photo’s that they could lend or give us, we would greatly appreciate the chance to display them. There will also be a memories book for visitors to record their thoughts etc. At the AGM, we have requested past youth worker Ken Hindle to chair the meeting, as Ken was the youth worker who started the building in the first place. We are hopeful also that our Honorary President Neville Jones will be able to open the meeting and introduce Ken. Those attending the AGM will hear how the BAY Centre is managing to survive during these tough financial times, supporting all the community groups and clubs using the building. Also the proposed initiatives, and improvements. Additionally there will be reports from the various BAY centre’s clubs. The conclusion of the meeting will be marked by wine, cheese and nibbles in the BAY centre café, and the opportunity to inspect the building. To pass over documents, photo’s or memorabilia contact BAY Centre Chair Mike Lang on mobile: 07889 815860, or you can drop items into the centre at one of the regular Friday computer class’s in the training wing

Tips to improve the performance of your Windows computer: One of the most common queries we receive is how to deal with slow computers. Fortunately, with a few tricks, most slow computers can become noticeably more responsive without the need to purchase hardware upgrades. I will discuss some of the options below - but please remember that if you do not feel confident with this, feel free to call me on 07973 536299 and I can arrange to visit to look at your computer. UPDATES: Make sure to check your computer has all the latest updates installed. Check on Windows Vista, 7, and 8 by opening the start menu, typing “Update”, clicking ‘Windows Update’ then click “Check for Updates”. On Windows 10, click on “Settings” in the start menu, choose “Update & Security” then press “Check for Updates”. STARTUP ITEMS: It is very common for unnecessary programs to open (often in the background) when you boot up your computer, simply disabling these items can lead to much faster boot times. To find out how to disable start-up items on your Windows computer, open your web browser and navigate to www.tinyurl.com/ disable-items. Disable only items that you do not want to run every time you power on, like Google Updater, but never disable items like your Anti-virus software. TEMPORARY FILES: Over time, computers often get cluttered with old, unimportant files that can be deleted; this eventually makes your computer noticeably less responsive. Fortunately, this is easy to clear. To do this, on your keyboard, hold the Windows key and press R. In the box that opens, type %temp% and hit enter. Then delete all files within the folder that opens, and choose “skip” to files that are in use. BROWSER CLUTTER: Make sure to clear your browser history every once in a while, as these can pile up and slow your computer down. To clear browsing history, open your browser then press Control+Shift+Delete on your keyboard, and select to delete all browsing history and click Clear/Delete at the bottom. JUNKWARE: Another common reason for slow computers is Junkware, also known as bloatware, that has installed itself without you realizing, or that came pre-installed when you bought the machine. To remove Junkware, open “Programs and Features” from within the control panel, and uninstall software from thirdparty companies that are not wanted, such as Toolbars. Be very careful when doing this, as I have known people remove software drivers which could lead to no sound or no internet access. Please get in touch if you would like any help with your computer at either home or work. Neil Buzzard, Director, Computer Problem Solutions Ltd. Tel: 07973 536299 or e-mail sales@e-cps.co.uk

SRYP is gearing up for the Best Summer Ever Following the success of SRYP’s NCS summer 2015, where 180 young people were guided through the programme - learning a whole host of new skills and raising awareness and money for 16 charities - we are set to do it all over again this year with a larger cohort of 360 young people! Somerset Rural Youth Project (SRYP), based in Edington, has delivered the government-backed National Citizen Service (NCS) since 2011. The scheme is designed to give young people the opportunity to spend time away from home trying new things, meet and learn from influential members of the community, and plan and deliver their own social action projects. SRYP is now recruiting year 11s and 12s from across Somerset for Summer NCS, which includes an activity residential on Exmoor, a second residential in Cannington, followed by two weeks of amazing social action and fundraising. The total cost is just £50 and places are filling fast. NCS looks great on CVs and university applications, and takes place during school and college holidays. We are also looking for anyone with youth work, coaching or teaching experience to fill temporary summer vacancies on the NCS project. This involves four week’s work, including two weeks of fun-packed residentials, and the pay ranges from £1,065 for a worker to £1,198 for a leader. Anyone interested in NCS as a participant or an employee can find more info at www.sryp.org.uk
GARDENING JOBS FOR MAY Plants from earlier sown seeds should be growing away now but they still need looking after, weed and feed. Slugs are active so take whatever precautions you are happy with to control them. Tall perennials, which need support, should be staked and any new growth tied in. Prune back climbers and shrubs that have already flowered and remove dead and spindly growth. Pull up spring bedding plants such as wallflower sand forget-me-nots when they have finished flowering. Mow lawns regularly and weed and feed if necessary. Clip hedges, such as privet, from now onwards. Watch out for aphid attacks on indoor plants as they will multiply rapidly in the warmer weather. Harden off any tender plants ready for planting out towards the end of the month when frosty nights should be over. If you are sowing radish, beetroot, lettuce and
spring onion little and often is the key. Sow sweetcorn, courgettes, marrows and pumpkins in individual pots to produce strong plants for planting out later on. Continue to hoe weeds regularly taking care not to damage the shallow roots and stems of cultivated plants. Members of the Horticultural Society have been busy sowing seeds and potting on plants ready for their plant sale which is being held on Saturday 14th May at The Community Centre Berrow Road. The sale starts at 9.30am and finishes at 12.30pm. For more tips why not join your local gardening group? The Burnham and District Horticultural Society meets at 7.30 pm on the third Monday of each month (except December) at the Community Centre, Berrow Road. Now is a good time to join. We have a full and varied programme of speakers and events – all for just £5.50 per person per year. The next meeting is on Monday 16th May 2016 with a talk from Terry Bratcher on Dahlias. All welcome. Members of the Society free, visitors £1.50.
