From the editor

I hope that everyone has enjoyed the summer break and the warm weather that we saw on a number of occasions. We have seen events that have been long standing in the town and new vibrant events take place this summer with the introduction of Spray Jam which I went along to and spent and enjoyable weekend meeting the artists and viewing some of the amazing talent that came to Burnham on Sea. September is still busy with events still organised in the town and many of the groups that take a break for the summer regrouping and starting back. There are a number of opportunities to start a new hobby or try a different skill with Somerset Skills and Learning offering some interesting opportunities and also guitar lessons at the library in Highbridge! There are some coffee mornings arranged to support our local community halls - more information inside this edition of Local Reach. If you would like information printed and photographs of events you are hosting then please email me in good time. Editorial deadline for October issue is Wednesday 7th September 2016. Two Green Flags for Sedgemoor The national Green Flag Award scheme have unveiled this year’s award winners and two of Sedgemoor’s parks are once again amongst the very best in the UK – and that’s official! Marine Cove Gardens, on Burnham-onSea’s Esplanade, has received the Green Flag Award for the fifth year running with Apex Park in Highbridge receiving it for the tenth year in a row. Nationally, 1,686 parks and green spaces have received a prestigious Green Flag Award in 2016. The award, now celebrating its 20th year, recognises and rewards the best parks and green spaces across the country. A Green Flag flying overhead is a sign to the public that the space boasts the highest possible standards, is beautifully maintained, holds regular events, is appropriately marketed and has excellent facilities. The Green Flag Awards are judged by an army of more than 700 green space experts, who volunteer their time to visit applicant sites and assess them against eight strict criteria, including horticultural standards, cleanliness, sustainability and community involvement. Councillor Ian Dyer, Chairman of Sedgemoor District Council said “It is with thanks to Sedgemoor’s Parks, Clean Surroundings and Dog Warden staff, as well as the incredible support from the Friends of Marine Cove Gardens and Friends of Apex Park Improvements Group, that both parks are in tip-top condition for their wide range of visitors. Sedgemoor District Council is very proud to have once again been recognised in two

separate locations for Green Flag awards. Well done to all involved”. International Green Flag Award scheme manager Paul Todd said: “We are delighted to be celebrating another record-breaking year for the Green Flag Award scheme, especially as we celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Awards. “All the flags flying this year are a testament to the efforts of the thousands of men and women, both staff and volunteers, who work tirelessly to maintain the high standards demanded by the Green Flag Award.”

Major Windows 10 update released Read on to learn more about the update, including the changes made, new features added, and how to check if you still need to perform the free upgrade on your machine(s) if you have not already. On August 2nd, Microsoft released a major update for Windows 10, in celebration of a year since its release back in 2015, calling this the “Windows 10 Anniversary Update”. The update should automatically install on all Windows 10 machines over the coming weeks – the user can tell when, because when restarting/powering the computer, they are welcomed by an “Upgrading Windows…” process, typically lasting between 30 and 60 minutes – this is the Anniversary update finalising. But what of the new features in this update? Well, the largest area of improvement is in Cortana – Microsoft’s ‘assistant’ to aid your Windows experience, by performing tasks and responding to questions for you, and so on – similar to Apple’s ‘Siri’. Cortana now also resides in the lock screen, so can now be summoned any time. Cortana is also a lot smarter, so can now make suggestions to you, answer much trickier questions, and can even respond to your emails and remind you of upcoming events, or even cancelled ones – flight cancellations for example. Windows 10 can now also be linked to your android or Windows smart-phone. By simply installing the ‘Cortana’ app, you can have phone notifications pop up on your Windows 10 computer, with such possibilities as incoming texts/calls, scheduled app notifications, and even battery-life warnings. Microsoft Edge has also seen some beefy improvements, such as the long-awaited extensions, pinned tabs, swipe navigation and more – most Chrome extensions are expected to be compatible with Edge shortly. Windows 10 has seen other general improvements in many shapes and forms, such as a re-designed start menu, changes to “Settings”, and more desktop apps/games to come to the Windows Store. There are also many 'under the bonnet' features which you will not see, but will keep things running fast and safe, therefore this update is recommended. Should you need help with this update or any other IT issues, you can contact our office on 01278 787846 or ring me on 07973 536299. Neil Buzzard. Director. Computer Problem Solutions Ltd.

Princess Theatre Company’s next production. The next production to come from the Princess Theatre Company is CARNIVAL by Kim Cook. This original stage play follows the Mudlarkers Carnival Club as it prepares for this year’s Somerset Carnival. Writer Kim Cook explains ‘Carnival is the story of a fictitious carnival club and their trials and tribulations whilst preparing for Carnival. I guess it would be described as a black comedy as there are a fair few disasters, but hopefully some laughs as well. She goes on to say. ‘Obviously, Carnival is an important part of Somerset life and that’s why I decided to write about it. Coming from Yorkshire I had never seen anything like it, but I’ve loved it ever since I saw my first one about twenty years ago.’ The performance is Friday 7th October 2016, at 7pm. Tickets are priced at £6/£4 and are available from the Princess Theatre box office on 01278 794464, or online at www.theprincesstheatre.co.uk. £1 from every ticket sold will be donated to the carnival committee. The Princes Theatre Company are supported by the Burnham and Highbridge Town Council

Theatre and Writing Workshops The Princess Theatre Company are holding a series of theatre and writing workshops starting this autumn. The workshops aim to cover characterisation and then using the characters go on to devise a piece of theatre. Organiser Kim Cook tells us ‘the workshops are open to both beginners and people who have been writing, perhaps plays, or another genre. We are keen to encourage those interested in writing, in making theatre and actors to come together to create a true piece of community theatre, which we hope to perform next year. Following the successful Trading Local project earlier in the year, it was obvious just how much talent we had in Burnham and Highbridge and it would be great to harness this in another great project.’ The workshops are free, but you do need to register your place. Dates are Saturday 15th October, 5th November and 12th November from 10am till 1pm at the Princess Theatre. For more information or to register your place, please email Kim on gkcook@sky.com or telephone 07850968150.

Treasure Trail The Burnham Chamber of Trade hopes that readers enjoyed the recent Treasure Trail through the Town Centre. A good amount of participants accurately completed the trail and supplied a tie break answer to the statement 'I like summer in Burnham because...' The judges enjoyed deciding that the best answer was from Noah Browne who wrote 'watching the tourists flock here reminds me we live in a perfect holiday destination, aren't we lucky!' Noah wins the treasure, £100 cash, sponsored kindly by Material Needs. On 22nd August an event was held at the Ritz Social Club to relaunch 'Project Coach'. This scheme run by the Chamber and BIARS, supported by Burnham on Sea & Highbridge Town Council, is headed by coach destination specialist and Burnham resident, Les Barber. The scheme has a stated objective of increasing the number of coaches bringing visitors to the town to 1,000 per year. Businesses and residents can find out more, offer support or take part in the project, by contacting Les at . On Monday 19th September the Chamber returns to the Ritz building, this time the Ritz Cinema with thanks to Mr & Mrs Scott, for a fund raising film screening evening. Further information and tickets available in September from the Ritz Cinema, with proceeds split between the 19th November Burnham Christmas Lights switch on and Carnival on 7th November

Celebrating inspiring women from Somerset – past and present There is a new exhibition of photographs, film and documents celebrating Somerset’s Inspiring women past and present running until Sunday 11th September at the McMillan Theatre in Bridgwater. Research undertaken by young women and men from across Somerset, who participated in youth heritage project Women By Women, ran by Somerset Film and Somerset Rural Youth Project, will be on display. Those involved captured and interpreted the stories and experiences of women, past and present, developing inquiry and interviewing, archiving, researching and creative digital skills and techniques. Jemma Lay of Somerset Rural Youth Project says, “We hope that the exhibition inspires other people as much as it has inspired us and the group of young people that we have worked with. We are very excited to be able to share the stories of the incredible, inspiring women that we have discovered. It has been an honour to be apart of this project!” “This project has really highlighted some of the Somerset Women who have achieved great things, such as Jill Nichols, a present day horseback midwife and past woman Ada Lovelace, on of Britain’s first computer programmers…” Natalie Collings of Somerset Film. Faye Roxburgh, participant of Women By Women said “This project has been very inspiring to me as it has given a voice to many of the inspirational and strong women throughout history who have been denied acknowledgement and appreciation” The Free exhibition is

open from 10am – 2pm daily. The project has been funded by Heritage Lottery Fund, Sedgemoor District Council, Arts Award and has been supported by The South West Heritage Trust and The McMillan Theatre.

Local Expert PROPERTY GUIDE page Big Brexit Decision Two months on from the Big Brexit Decision we are regularly asked, what impact has the vote had on the property market in Burnham-on-Sea and Highbridge? We have prepared a summary of activity in the local area, and our opinion on how we think things will evolve over the coming months. Buying Activity The number of buyers registered has increased in July and August, which has mainly been down to the number of first time buyers entering the market place, making up about a third of all successfully agreed sales. First time buyers are extremely important, as they underpin the rest of the market, by setting the wheels in motion on the bottom of the ladder and enabling the progression of home moves up to higher priced properties. Much of this increase has been down to lower interest rates and mortgage providers offering some good long term, low rate mortgage deals. The number of investors looking to buy rental properties and also second home buyers have decreased following the introduction of the higher stamp duty threshold in April. The impact, however, has been nullified by the increased first time buyer activity, which was one of the reasons why the reform was introduced anyway.

Housing Supply The amount of property available to buy is at a two year low, as those sellers who move out of choice, rather than necessity, seem to be hanging on to see what pan’s out. On the other side of the coin, there are a number of home owners who have seen this lack of supply and are capitalizing on it, often achieving close to, or full asking price of their property. The Future With buyer levels showing no signs of contracting and the optimism of first time buyers, should current available housing stock level remain low, then there will be a short term increase in house prices. However we are predicting over the longer term that there may be a sudden influx of property from those buyers sitting on the fence, providing an oversupply and hence a slight fall in the potential value of their homes. Somerset Chamber Choir Saturday 23rd July 2016 Wells Cathedral Somerset Chamber Choir, with Southern Sinfonia, performed an expertly devised programme titled “English Genius” at Wells Cathedral. A soft beautiful opening from the choir introduced Purcell's motet, Jehova, quam multi sunt hostes mei, with tenor Andrew Tortise and baritone George Humphreys expertly commanding the audience's attention. Purcell’s, Hear my prayer, O Lord, drew clear and well-balanced vocal statements from the choir, and built dramatically to an enrapturing climax. Next came a sequence by Orlando Gibbons. This is the record of John, arranged by Nico Muhly for string quartet, clarinet and piano was played sensitively. The concert ended with Benjamin Britten's cantata St Nicolas, scored for mixed choir, tenor soloist, four boys, strings, piano duet, organ and percussion. Andrew Tortise's fresh tone was perfect for the part of the adult Nicholas, commanding the score with incredible mastery of text and intonation; Henry Dukes performed the role of the boy Nicholas excellently with appropriate childhood innocence. The choir was on form in this work, confidently adapting to the many facets demanded by Britten, and performing with an assured professionalism. This great work was the perfect way to end a great night of English music-making - congratulations to the choir, orchestra, soloists and, most of all, conductor Graham Caldbeck.

Music for the Memory We are a local independent self-funding, not for profit group. Which is run by dedicated volunteers. The group enables people living with Dementia / memory loss to meet in a relaxed, non-medical environment, to perform a variety of musical based activities. We would like to thank all the local organisations who have helped us reach our 1st birthday. You may not be aware, but at the beginning the volunteers were supporting the group out of their own pockets. That's how dedicated they were in continuing this much needed group. So do not underestimate the support you have given, however large or small. Without your help our members would not be able to continue to enjoy the benefits that music brings to them. We have also been able to invite guest musicians, and dance leaders to provide different activities, alongside our trained facilitator. Due to your help. Our members are the reason this group continues to exist, everything we do is focused upon their well-being. One member told us "When I sing I don't have Dementia". This is why we do our upmost to keep this group running. A very big thank you to you all. If you would like more information please contact us. Litter Free Coast & Sea Somerset There is community campaign to improve bathing water in Burnham-on-Sea and is urging visitors and holidaymakers visiting Burnham-on-Sea to feed the bin, not the local seagulls. When eating it is a pain when a seagull sneakily steals a chip out of your hands! Not only are gulls dangerous when they dive, they end up pooing in the sea where we paddle and swim. When the Environment Agency measure the amount of bacteria in bathing waters to determine how clean they are, bird poo can be one source of bacteria. Harriet Yates-Smith, Litter Free Coast & Sea Somerset Coordinator, said “The problem with the single message of ‘please do not feed the gulls’ is it doesn’t give people the reason ‘why’. The campaign aims to share the message that feeding gulls has many negative effects and its best to feed the bin, not the birds.” Local take away outlets, cafes, pubs and caravan sites in Burnham-on-Sea are joining forces as they are standing up to seagulls and encouraging their customers to feed the bin and not the birds. The food establishments and campsites will be putting up eye catching, vibrant posters and stickers in their windows and on their fast food packaging all with the same message ‘Don’t feed the locals’. The posters explain why people shouldn’t feed them and how to avoid a gull attack. Keith Holman from Brit Chips says “We’re supporting this campaign because, at the end of the day, the gulls are a real nuisance and they sometimes attack our customers. It’s much better if people know not to feed them because it encourages bad behaviour like snatching food off people’s plates.” Harriet reminds us “Remember, the birds aren’t hungry they’re just greedy and feeding them your food can will only encourage dangerous behaviour and damages their health. Please help make a difference to the water and beach and help us achieve cleaner seas and beaches by binning any left-over food and not feeding the seagulls”.

Gardening Jobs for SEPTEMBER Now is a good time to move shrubs and trees while the soil is still warm.

choice now.

Give a final trim to hedging and remember to keep it wider and thicker at the base rather than the top.

The grass growth on lawns will slow down this month so raise the cutting blades on the mower. It is also a good time to lay new turf or sow new lawn seed, particularly later in the month.

Prepare sites for any new planting of trees and shrubs planned for later on in Autumn. Add plenty of well rotted manure or compost to improve your soil. Continue harvesting crops and store onions and potatoes. Place pumpkins and squashes on top of pieces of wood or old tiles while they are growing to raise them up off wet soil. Remember your plants in containers and baskets will often keep performing until the first frosts as will some flowering plants in the garden. Keep deadheading your plants to keep them going. Now is the time to order new bare rooted plants like trees, fruit bushes and roses, Choose a specialist supplier and you will have the widest

Water plants in greenhouses early in the day so the have time to dry out before evening. Close windows and doors in late afternoon to help trap in the day’s heat. Reduce the watering of houseplants as light levels fall. You can make a start on your plantings of spring flowering bulbs, particularly forced bulbs for Christmas, keep these cool and dark for at least eight weeks. If planting bulbs in the garden don’t forget a handful of grit under the bulbs will assist with drainage. Spring bulbs are great in pots and containers and if you mix in different types you can prolong the flowering period of your container for many weeks.

For more tips, why not join your local gardening group? The Burnham and District Horticultural Society meets at 7.30 pm on the third Monday of each month (except December) at the Community Centre, Berrow Road. The next meeting is on Monday 19th September when there will be a talk from Chris and Judy Yates 'Growing for Showing'. All welcome. members of the Society free, visitors £1.50.

community Notice board

In Charley’s Memory update Coming up over the next few months at ‘In Charley’s Memory’… In conjunction with the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty project we are offering families a chance to take part in a ‘terrific trees’ and an orienteering day. (August 4th & 18th) as well as setting up a well-being walking group from September where we will walk out on the Mendips and Quantocks. (Transport provided) We are able to offer free/low cost counselling to young people (11-25) in our community, as well as support and sign-posting for family members. Thanks to generous funding from Burnham & Highbridge Town council, our helpline volunteers will be trained up in August so that our service can launch in the autumn. We have also got funding from the town & district council to enable us to set up our ’Young Ambassadors’ scheme, so that young people’s awareness of mental health will be increased and they will be mentored by us in their role in local schools and colleges. Also keep a look out on our Facebook page for our ‘Lads & Dads’ event which will take place at Wall Eden Farm, East Huntspill. Exact date to be confirmed! (Thanks to SDC for funding this programme) Please contact us if you are concerned about your own mental health or that of someone you care about. Please get in touch about any of the above events and services. You can contact us on 01278 773403 Via our Facebook page or email us In_charleys_memory@outlook.com or pop into our office at Manor House, Manor Road, Burnham.

New Major Appeal Launches to support Somerset’s Coast Somerset Wildlife Trust dispels the myths and reveals a coast worth far greater protection Somerset Wildlife Trust is today launching its Somerset’s Brilliant Coast Appeal - which aims to deliver vital funds to explore and better understand the county’s coastline in order to protect its diverse habitats and wealth of species that are facing many threats - the need for reinforced coastal flood defenses, tidal and nuclear energy generation and the conversion of coastal habitats for development to name just a few. Contrary to what might be the public perception, Somerset’s 73 km coastline is an extraordinarily diverse place, rich in habitats, wildlife, world-class geology and historical heritage. However, little is known about our coastal wildlife and, coupled with increased development pressures, this lack of awareness could lead to poor decision-making for its future, which may have irreversible consequences for wildlife further across the county. Based on a successful pilot year of activity along the coast, Somerset Wildlife Trust has been able to develop a conservation plan for Somerset’s Coast. A key part of this is developing our knowledge base of coastal wildlife through undertaking systematic surveys of some of our more difficult to reach environments. The Trust has received a contribution from the Peter De Haan Charitable Trust that will support this much needed coastal wildlife survey work over the next three years, however it still needs £85,000 in funds to carry out the necessary surveys to increase the scientific evidence base on, and raise awareness of the importance of, Somerset’s coastal wildlife. Somerset’s Brilliant Coast Appeal hopes to gain support from existing Trust members, conservations enthusiasts, and the wider public whether their passion is the county’s iconic wildlife, its diverse habitats or the world-class geology that underpins our fantastically varied landscape. For more information on the Appeal and some examples of where monies raised will be spent, please visit Somerset Wildlife Trust’s website, any gift given will go directly to helping us carryout critical survey work along the coast and supporting the wildlife here and throughout the county. You can also donate securely by card on our website at: http://www.somersetwildlife.org/coastappeal or by telephoning 01823 652429. Every donation, whatever the size, will make a difference.
