From the editor
With Spring just on our doorstep, it’s time to look forward to what is going to unfold in and around Burnham and Highbridge. The Jubilee celebrations are gathering momentum. The Town Council have put together some information outlining the events that are currently being planned – that does not mean there is not room for more. For all of you interested in the Arts and Performing Arts, there are some treats coming up this month, with HaBa holding an event at the community centre, and the Somerset Fellowship of Drama running a series of one Act Plays at the Princess during March. The Burnham Dreamscheme will also be treading the boards later in the year, but are on the look out for young talent, so be sure to read on for more information. Families are being encouraged to make use of the computer and camera equipment available via Family Connections for free hire. It maybe that being out in the open is more appealing so why not investigate the free Family learning projects being made available at Marine Cove. There is something for everybody – you just need to know where to look for it. With Local Reach being delivered to over 9000 households in the local area, what better way to publicise you event, group or society. Jacqui Strong, LocalReach Community Editor for Burnham & Highbridge - jacqui@localreach.co.uk The deadline for the April issue is 16th March!

Working in Partnership Have you ever heard or read about agencies ‘working in partnership’ and wondered exactly what that means? It isn’t just another catchphrase as effective working often reduces costs and makes each agency more effective than they would have otherwise have been working alone. The Police have a lot of partners who we call upon in an effort to stop a problem. Some of our most well known partners are the Parish, District and County Councils but that is just an example.

To further support families’, equipment has been left with the community. Another success from Burnham District Pantomime Society The Burnham district pantomime society’s production of “Sleeping Beauty” has ended. Our local audiences have told us how much they enjoyed it. I would like to say a big thank you to all the people who were involved in putting on this show and our supporters, advertisers and audiences for continuing to give us your loyal support in many ways, without you we would not be able to continue. We did notice that ticket sales were less this year - we think due to the economic climate so if we can afford to reduce them for our next production, we will. It is so important to keep amateur entertainment going so that our young folk
can gain from both taking part in it and from watching. It is of course important to use the Princess so that Burnham can keep it running as an important community facility. We maybe involved in other events in the coming months with May Day and the Queens jubilee and of course fund raising. We now have a great bunch of young talent amongst our members to help us. Our next meeting is Friday 2nd March at the Community Centre, Berrow Road 8pm - and the first Friday in every month except when the panto is on. New members are always welcome contact Barbara Neill, Membership sec. Tel :- or Wendy Wynn Hon Sec,:- or Mo Cooper chairperson :- 783152 for more information

Why solar still has a sunny future The recent government cuts to the Feed in Tariff (FIT) scheme caused upheaval in the solar industry. Government excuses for the premature tariff cut were that their forecasts of the uptake of the scheme were all wrong – their prediction that the UK would see 137MW of solar PV capacity installed in the past year was wildly outstripped by the actual figure of 987MW. The forecast performance of solar electric systems was also vastly underestimated, as figures were based on climate data from relatively gloomy Sheffield, while the majority of systems were actually installed in the sunnier south of England: particularly in the South West, solar panels tend to generate far more electricity than the SAP would have had you believe. On the plus side, this means that solar power in the SW represents an even greater measure of insulation against fuel price rises, which are unfortunately not going to go away. The newly reassessed government ratings show Somerset to have around 20% greater potential for solar generation than the previous SAP figures - which is what MD Stephen Barrett of local installers
Solarsense has always said: South West is Best for solar! Stephen said, “From 1st April, an EPC of level D or above will be required in order to claim the FIT – so if you are considering solar PV but your home is old or draughty, it’s best to act now.” There are a whole host of other ways to protect yourself against increasing fuel prices. Solar thermal or heat pumps are obvious choices to enjoy the warmth of a cosy home with hugely reduced heating bills. There are currently upfront grants available for householders installing these renewable heat technologies, and you will also be eligible for tariff payments with the new Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) coming in October 2012 – and pay next to nothing for your heating between May and October. The RHI means solar thermal is enjoying a revival relative to PV, and Backwell-based Solarsense have just been commissioned to install a large solar thermal system at the newly redeveloped and much-loved community swimming pool in nearby Paulton.
Solarsense The South West’s leading solar installer since 1994 Installers of solar thermal and PV systems. Sell surplus power at premium rates with the Feed in Tariff Scheme: - Up to 43.3p per kilowatt hour generated. - Expect a return on installation 'investment' cost of 8-12%. Solarsense have installed over 4,500 domestic and commercial solar systems throughout the South West. Completed projects include Chew Magna and Chewton Mendip Primary Schools; the Clifton Lido; Redland Park Church; Oldfield Surgery, Bath, and the UK’s largest private rooftop PV system (200kWp) at Worthy Farm, Glastonbury.

Big Tournament win for Burnham’s Under 12s The undefeated ‘Super Stags’ u12’s rugby team travelled to Yeovil’s Ivel Barbarians for their 2012 Festival of Rugby Tournament on Sunday against seven other quality teams . The games were not against local opposition but against teams as far afield as Dorchester, Sherbourne , Wareham & Wellington. Despite having the smallest squad of boys in the competition and including four boys playing up a year from the U11’s, Burnham still managed to win every match conceding only two trys and emerge as festival winners. This was truly a fantastic squad achievement and every player gave 110% to the cause by winning all their pool matches , playing exciting powerful running rugby to beat three very strong sides Wellington 10 - 0 , Castle Cary 25 - 0 & a Swanage &
Wareham that had some very big boys 25 - 10. Next up in the semi final were the runners up from pool A - Sherburne . In a very closely contested game Burnham eased into the final 10 - 0 . A well organised Dorchester, winners of the other semi-final were the opponents in the Final. In a game where both teams were evenly matched Burnham gained the upper hand with Manu scoring the games only try. The whole team defended and tackled courageously to keep Dorchester from crossing their try line and finish as the tournaments winners. Individuals who performed particularly well were Yiannis , Samuel Everett , Sam & Simon
Elrick , Dan Curry and George Goodall , but man of the tournament was undoubtedly Manu who played with power, pace & skill and showed what a truly exciting prospect he is for the future. Head coach Nigel White said that the team went into the tournament unbeaten all season and this was their chance to prove how good a team they are. The whole team rose to the challenge by playing some fantastic rugby to win the trophy.

Learners Work goes on display Learners from Somerset Skills & Learning art classes are excited this week as some of their work is getting displayed in the store front of Hurley’s on the High Street in Burnham on Sea. Learners from classes in Bridgwater and Burnham on Sea have submitted some of their work for the exhibition which hopes to raise interest in art courses in the area. Almost thirty learners have submitted work which they have produced in class since they started on the courses. The exhibition includes drawings from the ‘Drawing in a Range of Media’ course (which finished last week) in pencil, ink pen, charcoal, pastels and colour pencils. It also includes watercolour, acrylic and oil paintings which highlight the range of new painting classes starting in February. “There are lots of new opportunities to pick up a paintbrush and start painting starting this month, from pure watercolour classes to courses where you experience a range of different media” Ade Bowen told us, Lead Art Tutor for this area. “One thing I am particularly excited about is the new level 1 qualification course we are starting in Bridgwater where people can learn the basics of art and get a qualification as well.”
Fine art is not the only creative classes on offer though. Craft courses include Calligraphy, Stained Glass, Sugarcraft and Floristry. “Hurley’s have been working in partnership with us to make sure they are supplying the material the learners need for the course and we are very thankful for them Summer Tree, to offer the window a pastel drawing by Malcolm Drake form ‘Drawing in a Range space and stocking such a good range of tools and equipment for the learners on the course.” If you would like to find out more about the courses on offer, call in to the Somerset Skills & Learning Centre on Princess St, visit Hurley’s and pick up some information, view the website on www. learnsomerset.co.uk or call 0845 688 0488.

March IN THE GARDEN … Flowers/Shrubs.
Prune, train and tie up climbers.
All herbaceous perennials should be planted at once.
Sow hardy annuals during mild weather.
Finish any rose planting. On a warm border, roses may be pruned during March. The last week is the safest time, prune strong growing kinds lightly and weak ones more severely, leave tea roses until the first week in April as they are more tender than the hybrid varieties and the new growth is therefore more likely to be damaged by frosts.
Sow sweet peas outdoors. Stir the soil amongst wallflowers, forget-me-nots, bulbs and other spring flowers. Remember to sow some flowers for cutting. After flowering, bulbs in bowls will still need some water. It is best to take the bulbs out
For more tips why not join your local gardening group? The Burnham and District Horticultural Society meets at 7.30 pm on the third Monday of each month (except December) at the Community Centre, Berrow Road. All welcome. Members of the Society free, visitors £1.00.

National Citizen Service South West Fantastic news for Year 11 students has been revealed this week - 150 school leavers from across Somerset will have the opportunity to get involved in an amazing summer of activities after they finish their exams. Following on from the success of National Citizen Service in 2011, Somerset Rural Youth Project and the Volunteer Network are pleased to offer places for 16 year olds this summer. The organisers hope that students from Burnham, Highbridge and the surrounding area will once again take up the NCS challenge, which was last year described by one participant as ‘the best thing I’ve ever done’. Taking part means going away on a week’s activity holiday – which might involve kayaking, coasteering, hiking, surfing, caving, climbing, sailing, and other outdoor challenges. There is another week away where participants get the chance to find out about what make’s their communities tick – meeting charities, businesses, MPs and Councillors. It’s also good news for parents who can have a couple of weeks rest during the summer. There are even plans for an Olympic themed challenge.
After the two weeks away, the lucky teens get stuck in to doing something they are really passionate about – which might be an environmental project, a live music or drama tour, a campaign to improve transport, a sports project, a media project, or a project around helping other teenagers live healthier lives. NCS Coordinator for Somerset Rural Youth Project, John Addicott, says “Everyone who takes part fully will get several certificates recognising the personal developments they have achieved, which is great for university or job interviews – important at a time when there is such competition for limited jobs”. The project, which is well funded so there is only a small amount of fundraising by participants needed to cover the costs, is part of a Government plan, which wants every 16-year old to have the chance to take part in National Citizen Service in the future. To find out more, and register interest, keen teens or their parents can visit www.sryp.org.uk, call 01278 722100 or email ncs@sryp.org.uk SRYP - Inspiring Involvement Creating Opportunities
