From the editor Welcome to the February edition of Local Reach. There is still plenty to do and see locally. With the New Year well under way and possibly some of those resolutions long gone – why not take a serious look at some of the groups running locally. Most will offer you the opportunity to “give it a go” before committing yourself to membership. So whether it is Bowls, tennis, photography, you can find a group locally. There are plans highlighted in this months edition for this years Food and Drink Festival – building on the strength of 2012 we can expect a double helping for 2013. Ian Jefferies is producing an events programme for the forthcoming season which will be published in next month's issue and thereafter. Please contact Ian direct via the information centre to get your event the publicity it deserves and attract the biggest audience possible. I hope you enjoy reading this months edition. Please keep the articles coming in as I enjoy reading them before they go to press! LocalReach Community Editor for Burnham & Highbridge -

Lambing Fun Day The twentieth of March is officially the beginning of Spring, but for many people, the brighter weather, lighter evenings, glimpse of a snowdrop or two and new-born lambs springing around the local fields is often the first sign of the season. For Bridgwater College, lambs are in abundance at this time of year, with lambing season in full swing. If you haven’t been to Bridgwater College’s Lambing Fun Day event before, then put the date in your diary for a real treat! As the name suggests, it really is a great day out for all the family, and takes place this year on Sunday 3 March. Even with last year’s dismal weather, the number of visitors was at a record high, and with more to see and do than ever before, this year’s event is real value for money. Tickets can be bought on the day, or if bought in advance, there is a 20% discount. There are lots of activities lined up for the day, with sheep dog demonstrations, sheep shearing, milking demonstrations, ferret racing, tractor trailer rides, bouncy castle, face painting,

trader stalls, and of course a chance to see and hold the ever-socute new-born lambs. Jeremy Kerswell, Head of Land-based Studies at the College says: “Despite the weather last year, we were delighted so many people put on their wellies and decided to join us for the day. The tractor trailer rides and sheep shearing were especially popular with the children, and everyone seemed to enjoy browsing around the product stalls of homemade jams, chutneys and cheeses. “As well as all that, we saw more than eight lambs born during the day, including a set of triplets and twins, and it is a wonderful opportunity for visitors to see the new-borns and enjoy a cuddle with some of the more confident lambs. The feedback from the public last year was fantastic, and we are looking forward to this year’s event and meeting many new visitors to Rodway Farm.”

LAMBING FUN DAY Sunday 3 March, 11am – 4pm Rodway Farm, Cannington

A fun day out for all the family! Come and meet the new born lambs, take a tractor/ trailer ride, see the ferret racing and sheep shearing. Plus lots, lots more! Pregnant women should avoid contact with the sheep during the lambing season. Rodway Farm (5 miles out of Bridgwater on the Hinkley Point road), Cannington, Somerset, TA5 2LS.

Somerset Skills & Learning are able to offer some suggestions in their new range of courses for 2013. You should have had their brochure through your door in December, but in case you missed it, they have an interesting aray of courses and workshops to help you. is a good range to choose from. If you are after a career shift, Somerset Skills & Learning can offer apprenticeships in a range of industries. Apprenticeships are an excellent way of getting a foot into employment while picking up valuable industry specific qualifications on the way, and you don’t have to be a school leaver to join one. Many employers are as keen to take on older apprenticeships with a bit more life experience as they are to take people leaving school. Saya Robinson has been enjoying courses with Somerset Skills & Learning for the last couple of years. “Initially I was impressed with the range of courses available in Burnham. I signed up to do a horticulture course which has greatly helped me with my career plans to become a landscape gardener. I also enrolled on an art class

which has helped me be more creative in my designs and the Pilates class is brilliant for my core strength and keeping me physically fit.” All these opportunities are available to join now, so have a flick through your brochure and see how you could start your 2013 with something new. Lost your brochure? You can pick one up from the Somerset Skills & Learning centre next to the Library on Princess Street. Alternatively go online to www.learnsomerset. co.uk\publications and download a copy now.

The quiz, with popular quizmaster Chris Williams will start at 7.30pm and will include his usual final 'stinker round' which enables all teams to have the chance to catch the leaders. Unusually, unlike most quizzes, participants don't have the stress of marking as Chris does all this for you. Teams of 4, at a cost of £10 per team, are advised to reserve a table beforehand to ensure a place (unfortunately the last quiz was oversubscribed and some teams had to be turned away at the door as all tables were occupied!). Tables can be reserved by phoning 01278 783121 or 01278 785727. Nibbles will be provided but quizzers are welcome to bring their own drinks (and glasses). Don't leave it too late to reserve a place!

Computer Corner by Neil Buzzard Computer Problem Solutions Ltd Thank you to everybody that e-mailed in IT related questions. It would seem that plenty of you are experiencing issues with your broadband service. As I have mentioned previously, it seems that when people use telephone extension wires within their houses, this causes both slow speed and line reliability issues. Another issues, which crops up quite a lot is the question of what to do with old computers including laptops that you wish to dispose of. The most important thing to remember is that your personal data may be contained on the machine on a device called a hard drive. If you wish to dispose of a machine, my advice would be to find a selection of small/medium sized Philips head screw driver (most computers use Philips although some use Torx such as HP/ Compaq), disconnect the power-lead and/or battery and either remove the side panel or in the case of a laptop the trap door underneath the machine. The device (hard drive) you are looking for is usually black or silver and is about 3.5” in width in the case of a computer and 2.5” in width in the case of a laptop. If you want to see some pictures, try putting “hard drive pictures” into Google search – this will give you a rough idea what to look for. Usually you can

unscrew the unit quite easy and disconnect the power / data cable and simply slide the unit out. Once you have this, the remainder of the computer taken be taken to your local council refuse facility and placed in a section purely for electrical goods. Once you have the hard drive, I would advise putting this somewhere safe – you never know when you might need the data contained within. Should you need any help doing this, please e-mail sales@e-cps.co.uk and we can arrange to visit. One issue that also crops up fairly regularly is that people have purchased a backup drive, but are not actually backing up to the drive. It is not just a case of plugging in and a backup working – you need to use kind of software to run the backup – on a few occasions recently, customers have proudly announced that they have a backup, but when I checked it, there was no data on the drive itself!! It is always a good idea to check the contents of any backup to make sure that the correct data is actually being backed up! ADVICE FROM SEDGEMOOR CITIZENS’ ADVICE BUREAU (5) This is the latest of a series of articles in which an experienced adviser from Sedgemoor Citizens’ Advice Bureau will offer readers guidance on common problems that are brought to the Bureau’s attention.

Pay Day Loans In these financially difficult times, many people find themselves in need of a shortterm loan to make ends meet. Payday loans are one way in which it is possible to obtain such a loan. They are available from High Street shops and internet sites. Generally, they are easy to obtain. However, there is one big disadvantage: the interest rates are very high. You also need to remember that payday loans are not suitable for longer-term financial difficulties. If you are thinking about a payday loan, do first consider if there are other ways in which you might raise some money without incurring high interest

rates. Here are three such ways: • You may be able to obtain a loan from a credit union. Check if there is one in your area. • If you have a bank account, you may be able to obtain an overdraft – but don’t go overdrawn without the bank’s permission. • If you are on a low income and need financial help in an emergency, you may be able to obtain a loan from the Social Fund. To explore this possibility, contact the nearest Job Centre Plus. If you decide that you really need to take out a payday loan, do shop around, comparing the interest rates of various lenders and making sure that you

understand the consequences if you can’t repay the loan on time. You will usually be have to repay the amount borrowed, plus the interest, after a month. The most common way in which people repay these loans is by debit card. This means agreeing that the lender can take money from your account by Continuous Payment Authority (CPA). If you have problems repaying a payday loan, the lender may offer you an extension. Beware of accepting such an offer. You will have to pay more interest and there may be additional fees. You can always ask the lender to freeze the interest and work out a repayment plan. If, however, you are struggling to repay a loan,

Notice Board get advice as soon as possible. Payday lenders should follow a Good Practice Charter. This states that they should: • Make clear to you the total cost of the loan, including interest. • Check your finances and your personal situation to ensure that you will be in a position to repay the loan. • Tell you that payday loans should not be used for long term borrowing or fundamental financial problems. • Tell you what to do if you have a complaint. If lenders don’t follow this charter, you can complain. In the first instance, you will need to write to the lender, explaining the reason for your complaint. If the lender does not respond appropriately, you may complain to the Financial Ombudsman Service, or to one of the trade associations for payday lenders. As a last resort, you may take the

The chimney or flue gases must be hotter than the outside temperature to ensure combustion gases are drawn out of the fire chamber and up the chimney. A wood-burning stove is a heating appliance capable of burning wood fuel and wood-derived biomass fuel, such as wood pellets. Generally the appliance consists of a solid metal (usually cast iron or steel) closed fire chamber, a fire brick base and an adjustable air control. Secret World to the Rescue - animals dumped over Christmas

It’s been a difficult start for Secret World who have had to step in and help Carrot Tops Rabbit Rescue who were called out to a welfare situation where 16 domestic rabbits were found squashed into two hutches. Now Secret World are coping with a baby boom of baby bunnies as some of the females rescued which have now been separated, were pregnant when they arrived! Last week 8 ferrets were found cold and shivering abandoned in a hedgerow nr Shapwick. These too are currently residing at Secret World as we have been unable to find any other organisations to take them in. Secret World are themselves dealing with high levels of wildlife coming in after recent flooding. Secret World founder Pauline Kidner

said “ We don’t normally accept any domestic animals as we only rescue injured and orphaned wildlife however it became clear that there was nowhere for the rabbits and ferrets to go. The owner of Carrot Tops has also been taken ill and hospitalised. All of the rabbits will be vaccinated and neutered before being rehomed and we are appealing for members of the public to come forward to offer a loving home as we feel it’s unfair to euthanasia healthy animals“ We are still accommodating 100 hedgehogs and are appealing for help with donations of tinned cat food and cat biscuits as well as shredded paper to help keep the inmates clean and fed. If you can help us with rabbit or ferret rehoming or donations of food, please contact Secret World on 01278 783250 or visit www. secretworld.org.

Once Upon a Time in Burnham Even allowing for the lack of Health and Safety regulations with which we are beset these days, slaughtering and cutting up an animal was not the sort of job that the ordinary householder could undertake as it was a task that made a lot of mess and required more room than was available in a domestic kitchen, so there as always a place in the community for a butcher as the average family could not afford a “Sunday roast”. Such a treat was only for high days and holidays and they derived their essential protein from rabbits and poultry which could be raised in the back garden and dispatched to the pot when required. Those who were more fortunate, like my great grandfather, who drove an engine for the Somerset and Dorset railway, were able to keep a pig at the bottom of their gardens which when killed would provide a goodly supply of meat to last a careful and diligent family for many months after the fresh cuts were past their ‘sell by dates’, not that folks in those days bothered about such details – if it did not run out of the cupboard when you opened the door, then you ate it. Even so, there was no urgency to eat everything as quickly as possible as, although Clarance Birdseye had yet to have his great idea, joints of meat, could be preserved by smoking or pickling in brine. Bread making was one of the housewife’s many duties, unlike the modern aficionados who throw all the ingredients in a neat little machine on the kitchen worktop and forget about it until it is ready to

be baked, she was involved in mixing and kneading the dough, then keeping an eye on it while it rested and proved before baking it. As the work involved in producing a dozen loaves was little more than in producing one, the village baker came into being, largely on the practical basis of cost effectiveness. As far back as the beginning of the 19th century, there were very few villages that did not have their own baker. In 1840 there were two bakers listed in Burnham, both of whose names are still to be found in the town, Samuel Hurley and Mary Morris although it is possible that the current Morrisses may not be descended from Mary, as we do not presently know if Morris was her married name. As recently as the beginning of WWII there were five bakers in the High Street alone, starting with Henry Brazil Merchant at 3a – where Specsavers is now. What remains of their bakery and tea gardens in now Potters mews in Technical Street. Further along at number 27 was Keen’s which was demolised to make way for the Hurley’s book shop, next door to which was W J Wide and son which, together with Luxon’s at number 33 survived the war. At 65, where the Taste of the Orient now stands was Henry Bulpin, later Nicholson’s and then Curtis’s . These are all gone now, as are Davies’s in Victoria Street and Baker Brothers in Princess Street where A K Autos is now. Immediately before A K Autos was Mr Francis, who in the 1950s was the only baker left in Burnham who operated a delivery round.
