From the editor Happy New Year, the past year has to go down on record as one of the quickest – whether this is due to the Olympic events held and the Jubilee Celebrations of 2012, but it does not seem a full 12 months since I was bidding you all a Happy 2012. There was also so much going on locally, despite the inclement weather we endured and I made a significant effort to go to as many as I could with my family. I speak to a lot of visitors to the area when working in Marine Cove and the comments are always the same – what a lovely area to live, there is so much to do, the people are so nice ..... to give you an idea. Sometimes however I feel we can all take things for granted, so my New Years resolution has to be to enjoy what we have on our door step and try not to take it for granted – otherwise we may loose it ..... enjoy this months publication and be sure to contact me with information you have on local groups needing publicity for their events. LocalReach also offers competitive rates for local businesses who wish to advertise in the magazine – please get in touch. East Huntspill Garden Club

Fish and Chip Fashion

The next meeting is on Thursday 21st February - with a talk and film on 'So you think you know gladioli?' by Hazell Gill. The talk will take place in the church Hall, East Huntspill. 7.30pm. All are welcome, admission: members £1. nonmembers/visitors £1.50 with a raffle and refreshments.

Fish and Chip babies are newborn babies, many suffering from Aids, who are being sent home from hospital wrapped in just newspaper. A challenge was issued to Burnham-on-Sea Trefoil Guild ladies in August to knit ‘around a dozen or so’ jumpers to be shipped off to Africa by the beginning of October. The project so touched their hearts that they rallied round many of their friends to help and to our great surprise, when they were handed in and counted, we had achieved a staggering total of 353 jumpers and 111 beanie hats. We had been told not to use pastel colours as these discolour (maybe will not even get washed!), especially white as this is the colour that babies are buried in. So all the knitters used up their oddments of wool, producing jumpers in a vast array of colours. Burnham-on-Sea Trefoil Guild members would like to give a big ‘thank you’ to all the many friends who helped raise this enormous amount of jumpers, especially the ladies of St. John’s Church, Highbridge.

Annual Village Show Photographic Competition The photographic subjects for the annual Village Show on August 3rd are: 1: Wildlife in the garden, 2: A Village event. 3: A photo in monochrome (black and white). 4: Wet and Windy! All photos a maximum of 7 inches by 5 inches and mounted on white card or paper with half inch border for more information contact Kay: 01278 789679.

Any Questions? by Neil Buzzard Computer Problem Solutions Ltd After a really good response to my article last month regarding broadband issues, it is very clear that people are not getting the speed that they should be. Out of several people who contacted me, I was able to give advice and also visit some concerned people to help solve some of these issues. The most common problem was that the router was plugged in via an extension lead, which reduced the speeds by up to 70%. Other issues were down to faults outside the house, such as the provider not setting the line speed to the maximum achievable or other physical issues on the line. This month I am inviting any questions on computer related subjects via e-mail. I will try to answer as many as possible by reply, and will use the best in this column for next month. Favourite questions at the moment include how to connect Sky TV to broadband which allows Sky’s “On Demand” service plus ways of cheaply speeding up a PC.

Please send your questions to sales@e-cps. co.uk Did you know that it is possible to extend the range of a wireless network using a wireless repeater. These devices cost around £40-£80 and must be placed within the range of the current network. They need to be joined with the current network settings and then provide a secondary wireless network which provides a signal from the main router. This is very useful for large houses or places with dead zones. Windows 8 has been out for a couple of months now – I would be interested to hear via e-mail people’s comments on Windows 8. I like it, and in particular the speed compared to Windows 7. I notice more companies are releasing Windows 8 style apps – these have quite a different look and feel compared to traditional programs. It will be interesting to see if these take off, or if people prefer old way of doing things.

In addition, they continue their education through fitness training center programs that keep them abreast of the latest developments in fitness. What results can I expect? Regular Jazzercise class is the original aerobic exercise class and combines dance, strength training, yoga, Pilates, and kickboxing movements into one fun and effective total body workout. The mix of Latin, hip hop and

jazz dance movements make Jazzercise feel more like a girl’s night out than a workout! Wildly imitated but never duplicated, routines are choreographed to current hits by major recording artists. With its fresh moves, new music and pure motivation, no other fitness program comes close. Got the first-class jitters? You’ll feel comfortable once you step into one of our group fitness classes. Jazzercise is a very welcoming and non-competitive environment. Jazzercise instructors, as well as customers, are friendly and helpful so you’ll never feel alone. ADVICE FROM SEDGEMOOR CITIZENS’ ADVICE BUREAU (4) This is the latest of a series of articles in which an experienced adviser from Sedgemoor Citizens’ Advice Bureau will offer readers guidance on common problems that are brought to the Bureau’s attention.

ARE YOU FINDING DIFFICULTY IN PAYING GAS OR ELECTRICITY BILLS? If you are struggling to pay your energy bills, or if you are in debt to an energy supplier, this article explains what you can do. You should remember that non payment of fuel bills can result in the supply being cut off. If you are experiencing difficulty in paying gas or electricity bills, it is important to contact the supplier as soon as possible. Explain the situation and ask if you can come to an arrangement about how to pay off any arrears. Do ensure that, before contacting the supplier, you have worked out carefully how much you can afford. On the CAB web site (www. adviceguide.org.uk) you will find a budgeting tool to help you do this. The supplier should give you advice on how to pay back any money you owe and offer you a payment plan that takes account of your ability to pay. If you find that you are unable to keep to a payment plan, the supplier may install a pre-payment meter. It may be possible to find an alternative supplier and switch to a cheaper rate. However, before you do this, you should check carefully the terms and conditions of both your existing contract and those of the proposed new supplier to ensure that switching would not incur a penalty and that the new arrangement would meet your needs. If you are on certain benefits, you will qualify for a scheme called Fuel Direct. The relevant benefits area; • Income Based Jobseeker’s Allowance. • Income Support. • Income Related Employment and Support Allowance. • Pension Credit. Under the Fuel Direct scheme, your fuel bills 20

can be paid directly from your benefits. Fuel Direct is often cheaper than a pre-payment meter. The amount you pay is determined by the Department of Work and Pensions (the DWP). If you want more details of this scheme, contact the nearest Job Centre Plus. Another possible source of help is The Home Heat Helpline (0800 336699). This offers assistance with energy efficiency and fuel debts to people on low incomes. The Helpline can make sure that, if you are among the groups of people who should receive extra protection from disconnection, you will not be at risk of being cut off. People who might benefit from the Helpline include: pensioners, people with long term ill health, the disabled, families with very young children and people with very severe financial problems, as well as those on low incomes. The supplier cannot cut you off without first sending a Disconnection Notice and a Disconnection Notice cannot be issued until at least 28 days after you have been sent your bill. The supplier must also give you 7 days notice in writing before disconnection. If you do get into arrears and receive a Disconnection Notice, do take advice from the CAB as a matter of urgency. If you have any anxieties about any aspect of your energy bills or your overall financial position, do visit one of Sedgemoor CAB’s drop-in sessions at: •B urnham-on-Sea Methodist Church, College St. Burnham-on-Sea. (Tuesdays, 9.30-12.30). •H ope Baptist Church, Church St., Highbridge. (Thursdays, 9.30-12.30). • T he Lions, West Quay, Bridgwater. (Monday-Friday 10-1; Saturday 10-12).

This winter please help give Barn Owls a new home in every Somerset Parish Somerset residents are being asked to help protect one of the counties most iconic species, this winter, with the launch of Somerset Wildlife Trust’s barn owl appeal. The launch of the appeal marks the half-way point in the Trust’s ambitious project to get a barn owl nest box in every parish of the county. Thanks to the help of more than 500 volunteers, half of the project’s 335 nest boxes are built, and being put in place by local communities. Last week a nest box was presented to staff and volunteers at Moldrams Local Nature Reserve, near Wincanton, which is managed by South Somerset District Council. The project has also seen more than 1,000 children learning about barn owl conservation, including pupils at North Town School in Taunton and Chilton Cantelo School, near Yeovil, who last week received a visit from Beau the Barn Owl and Chris Sperring MBE, Conservation Officer for the Hawk and Owl Trust and Vice President of Somerset Wildlife Trust. As the three-year project enters its first winter the Trust has launched an appeal to raise £30,000 to support the Somerset Community Barn Owl Project over the next two years. Somerset Wildlife Trust’s Project Manager Jessy Emery explains: “Winter can be a tough time for a lot of wildlife, not least the barn owl whose numbers can plummet during harsh weather. Extreme winters in the 1940s and 1960s wiped out over half the UK population and barn owls have struggled to recover ever since. More than 80 per cent of barn owls now nest and raise 22

their young in man-made boxes like the ones going up in every parish of Somerset.” The project is a collaboration with the Hawk and Owl Trust, and all the farmers and landowners who are hosting parish boxes have received a visit and advice on habitat creation from Chris Sperring. The project has been supported with funds from Viridor Credits Environmental Company, and donations from local people will provide vital match funding. Recent records indicate that there are currently just 200 breeding pairs in Somerset, and their population in the UK has dropped by as much as 70% since the 1930s. The project aims to address this decline by providing nest sites and creating more rough, grassland hunting habitat. In October the project celebrated its first breeding success with four baby owlets photographed on the sill of a nest box which went up at a Viridor landfill site, near Puriton, in Sedgemoor. With so many boxes already in place the Trust wants to start a comprehensive monitoring and recording programme next spring. To donate go to www. somersetwildlife.org/barnowlappeal or call 01823 652400.

Once upon a time in Burnham part 3 – The butcher, the baker and .................. And who? Certainly not the candlestick maker. It appears that Burnham never had one of those; but it had lots of other trades, many of which we seldom hear of today and numerous others that are no longer to be found because their products can be manufactured more cheaply in factories elsewhere and transported here to be sold in non-specialist shops. Time was, when the two towns had so many butchers that it needs more than the fingers of both hands to count them, although it must be admitted that they were not all trading simultaneously; even so, there were several that were. Before the advent of cold stores and refrigerated lorries, meats, like most other produce was sourced locally, with farmers, who not only slaughtered their own cattle but sold the meat in their family shops. In Bragg’s guide of 1840 John Deacon is listed as a butcher at, or near premises later occupied by Wells Brothers (part of a well-known farming family) at what is now 19 Victoria Street between 1900 and 1910 when Robert Trott took over them. Coming more up to date, within living memory (just about); during the 1920s and 30s Charles Hawkins traded as a butcher from 14 High Street, later incorporated into Shickle’s Shoes. Around 1930s Charles B. Parsons succeeded Robert Trott in Victoria Street, before removing to the High Street, where the cobblers shop is now. Before that, however, the business passed into the hands of Frank Weed who later moved into a property at the other end of the street vacated by F W Durrant

at number 4, once occupied by Arthur Hunt who opened his shop in the late 1930s. In 1935 William Johnson took over the butchery business at 31 College Street that had been run by the Lawrence family for over 50 years; He was followed H V Wilson. It was by no means unusual for butchers like Lawrences to have their own slaughter house at the rear of their premises. From the beginning of the 20th century until after WWII 57 High Street, was the address of Eastmans the butchers, when it became Dewhurst. For its size, Highbridge was better served; around the cusp of the century another scion of the Wells family traded in what was referred to as High Street at the same time as Thomas Sparks was in Market Street. William Hatcher did not come onto the scene until 1910 when he was listed as a pork butcher in Church Street. Before he moved to 4 Market Street where the business remained until it was superseded after WWII by Forseys. Little can be said about Tom Hawkins who traded in Church Street, a few doors from William Hatcher. The Bristol Colonial Meat Store at 24 Church Street, lasted only a few years from 1931. Graham Bishop, the last real butcher in Highbridge shut his shop in Market Street in the first few years of the 21st Century – sorry, but you will have to wait for the baker until the next issue. Thanks to Bob Thomas for putting this bite sized history of Burnham and Highbridge together for Local Reach. For more historic facts on the 2 towns, look at his book available to buy from Hurleys.
