From the editor I hope that you enjoy reading this month’s edition of Local Reach. May is my favourite month, the weather is starting to warm up, the days are getting longer and you know summer is round the corner, it is also the month of my birthday – so am biased! There is no end to the events that are taking place, don’t forget that the information centre on the Esplanade holds plenty of current information and always has a few copies of Local Reach if you know of someone who might like one! Note the change planned this year for the Summer Fete – more information in this months edition, May Day entertainment at Marine Cove and it’s all free! Advanced notice that this year’s Pirate event on the Beach is July 27th – Pirate School and games being arranged – it’s not too late to offer to help. Please keep your editorial coming in – we try our best to put as much as possible in. Burnham Lions and Hospital Friends Fete For some years now the Friends of Burnham Hospital have been aware that the annual August Bank Holiday Fete has become rather stilted. Very little seemed to change for the better and many stalls have become little different from those seen at car boot sales. There were notable exceptions, for example the Rotary Club’s Human Fruit Machine and Moose’s Fruit Pots – both of which were very successful. Burnham Lions also hold a fete in Manor Gardens. Their members have always supported the Hospital Fete with stalls and labour and so we have decided to pool our resources and have one Grand Fete on Bank Holiday Monday. Because of this, there will be some changes. Firstly, the Fete will run from 11am until 4pm. As there will be additional time there will be more arena displays to entertain the crowds and also more stalls to amuse children (and adults). Some ‘trade’ stalls will be allowed to do this eg: inflatables, roundabout, homemade

s

sweets etc. However, the hope is that the majority of the stalls will be charity stalls, raising money for themselves. Many things will remain unchanged eg the hospital raffle, tea tent and ever popular bottle stall. We hope that this year’s combined Lions and Hospital Friends fete will attract many more visitors. Because of the changes the organisers will need to know if both new and old charities/organisations would like to attend this year to raise funds for themselves. We also need to know how many tables worth of space are required. Please phone 01278 783121 or preferably email tony.deahl@talktalk.net to tell us your requirements. We very much hope that previous supporters and new charities, local people and visitors will continue to support the fete which has become an annual tradition and which raises much needed funds for our Hospital and many other charities.

The Walled Gardens of Cannington Located in the village of Cannington, the Walled Gardens lie within the grounds of a medieval priory and many of its fine buildings, including the walls of the garden, remain. Having undergone extensive redevelopment, the gardens were officially opened by HRH the Earl of Wessex, Prince Edward in 2009 and have also been accredited as a ‘quality assured visitor attraction’ by VisitEngland. They are also a Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) recommended garden and provide a superb facility for students at Bridgwater College Cannington Centre. The gardens have classic and contemporary features such as; the ‘hot’ herbaceous border; the blue garden; a subtropical walk; and a Victorian style fernery, amongst others. There is also a botanical glasshouse where arid, sub-tropical and tropical plants can be seen and two smaller

gardens within the walls (The Bishop’s and Australasian Gardens) are areas of real tranquillity. The Walled Gardens holds a variety of events throughout the year and provides a beautiful setting for the weekend fairs, outdoor performances and exhibitions. Visit during May when the gardens will be filled with music, stalls and entertainment for the Spring Fair (11 – 12 May), take a walk on the wild side in June for the Wildlife Weekend (1 – 2 June) or lose yourself in the world of Shakespeare with the wonderful performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream (21 – 22 June) performed by the Bridgwater College’s Drama Academy. Visit www. canningtonwalledgardens.co.uk for the full list of events. The gardens are open daily 10am – 5pm and there are also tea rooms, plant sales and a garden gift shop – which you don’t need access to the gardens to visit.

Marine Cove and Burnham Dreamscheme unite for garden event During the Easter Holidays Burnham Dreamscheme members attending Marine Cove to undertake one of the first maintenance tasks of the year. The young people attending sanded the 3 corner benches alongside the Friends of Marine Cove volunteers. After the benches were sanded they were treated with Danish Oil to protect them against the elements. “The Dreamscheme members all worked really hard on the benches and were concerned that they did the job properly so that the benches would be ready for visitors to use during the nicer weather” said Clean Surroundings employee John Phillips. John cast an eye on the hard work undertaken and announced Team Baker to be the winners in terms of the quality of work achieved. Representatives from Portishead attended to

see how the Burnham Dreamscheme operates and works with other organisations. Burnham & Highbridge Mayor Councillor Ken Smout also called in to show his support of the joint event. Jacqui Strong Community Gardener said “I would like to thank the young people for today and hope to see them during the year at some of the events we will be hosting. This event shows what you can do when you work together with a common aim”. If you would like to be involved with the Dreamscheme either as a young member or adult helper, there are plenty of activities planned for 2013. Contact the dreamscheme via www. burnham-dreamscheme.org.uk. We are busy working on the Community garden at the Bay Centre and would welcome any offer of help or vegetable/fruit plants.

When asked what I do, and I explain that I’m a Clinical Hypnotherapist I get bombarded with all sorts of questions, most of which are amusing stereotypes from books, TV, or stage shows. I have answered many of these on my website, but here are a few myth busters.... I will not make you : a) Walk like a chicken b) Swing a pendulum or say ‘look into my eyes’ c) Cannot make you do or say anything against your will.

The customer is always in complete control, and would be able to open their eyes should they wish. It is basically a powerful and enjoyable form of deep relaxation. A BAD MONTH FOR E-MAIL In the last few weeks, the Yahoo e-mail system was compromised resulting in many accounts sending out spam e-mail to their address book. This resulted in many Yahoo customers fearing that their computers had picked up a virus. It is unclear exactly how these ‘hackers’ got into people’s accounts but in many cases, this was not due to any virus on the end user’s computer. I believe that the hackers found a way of accessing accounts without needing the original passwords by using a lesser known way of connecting into the mail server. Yahoo’s solution was to advise people to change their password for a “Strong” password. This type of password contains a mix of upper case, lower case, number and sometimes characters such as $ or %. Yahoo also advise setting up a secondary “alternate e-mail address” in the Yahoo account settings. For further information please visit http://help. yahoo.com and click on Mail. If you would prefer an engineer to help you with this, please call us on 07973 536299 and

we can arrange one to visit. Some of you may have noticed a lot of activity by BT, who are currently preparing a fibre optic upgrade for the Burnham exchange. This will enable people to access the next generation of broadband. In other areas that are already enabled such as Weston-superMare and Worle, I have seen speeds of up to 60mb which results in a very fast internet service. This can benefit everybody, not just the family of 5 who all use the computer at the same time. More and more services are being provided online and I believe in a few years, all television will go via the internet rather than the current aerial/satellite solutions. For those who are interested, it is hard to know exactly when fibre is available but keep an eye on the local press and as soon as I see the Burnham exchange is ready, I will say so in this column. Some road and Street names The length of road between Tregunter (next to the Church at the junction of Victoria Street and Berrow Road) and the Brewery (which occupied the area between the police station and the Lighthouse pub) was known as Church Street up until around 1870 when Oxford Street and Highbridge Road came into being. It was not until much later that part of Oxford Street west of the Love Lane junction became Manor Road between the road beyond the brewery (Burnham Road) was known as Sandyway (of which there are several spellings). This road which joined the turnpike (A38) at Highbridge acquired its name for obvious reasons – not only was Sandyway House, next door to the brewery at one end of it and Sandyway Farm at the other, but the Rev Theodore Dupuis is on record as commenting on the difficulty that he experienced when walking from Highbridge station along the sandy track into Burnham. There is no clear indication that Berrow Road has ever been anything else, except for the spelling variation of Burrow when that village was so named because of the fact that it consisted largely of rabbit warrens. At the time, Berrow was a separate parish, both from a civil and ecclesiastical viewpoint with the boundary following the line of Brent Broad, which is a short distance to the north of the lighthouse and a few feet south of where Shelley Drive now runs. For a short period of time, the town end, at least was referred to as Brunswick Street after Brunswick Terrace, initially Brunswick Place. Beyond Brent Road on the Berrow side of the boundary, the road was know as Southings. The origin of Love Lane is equally simple in

that it took people towards an area referred to as Loveland in various mediaeval documents. At one time, it was almost de rigueur for any town that considered itself to be of some significance to have a high street, which was probably why Burnham acquired one just before the First World War, previously it had been known as Alfred Street after King Alfred who had retained Burnham for the crown after suitably disposing of the Danish invaders. Stoddens Road/Lane are a corruption of its earlier name, Stoatens Lane or the lane of the stoats. Victoria Street started at Tregunter and followed much the same course as now, to where it took a sharp left turn around the grounds of Ravensworth House, to join up with Church Street, opposite Vine Cottage – College Street did not come on the scene until around 1860. When Ravensworth House was demolished during the 1890s, Ravensworth Terrance and Ravensworth Villas in Oxford Street were built on part of the site. Later we shall consider some of the road and street names that we grew up with, many of which bear little or no resemblance to their original ones. Thanks to Bob Thomas local author and historian for this insight into the towns history. Burnham Area Evening Flower Club's meeting on the 20 May 2013 will be a different format than usual. The evening will commence with a presentation showing the Wells Deanery Garden followed by members demonstrating their various skills. The meeting will start at 7.30pm in St Andrew's Church Hall, Visitors welcome

Notice board I’ve been running local Music classes for babies, toddlers & preschool children for 9 years. Jolly Babies classes are baby’s first singing and musical experience from birth to 14 months. Classes are small and carefully structured to stimulate your baby’s senses, using singing, movement, small percussion instruments and props. It’s a chance to get away from it all and enjoy quality time with your baby. Music with Mummy classes from 14 months to 3 years aim to teach basic aspects of music whilst having fun. Classes are small, which builds children’s confidence and familiarity. We encourage language, listening, movement, rhythm using fun topics, musical games, props & percussion instruments. Three Four Time classes are for children from 3 years upwards. Each half term has a different story eg. Elves & Shoemaker. The main aim is to teach the children basic musical terms e.g. Lento & Presto . Children act out parts of a story using their imagination, encouraging sharing, building confidence, using language, listening skills and preparing the children for the next step, school. Weekly Bridgwater classes are at YMCA, Burnham classes at Avenue Tennis Club & North Petherton class at the Community Centre. Start of Summer Concerts Burnham and Highbridge Band is pleased to announce that their popular Sunday Evening Concerts will begin again on the evening of Sunday 26th May. Each concert, held on the last Sunday of each month begins at 7.45pm. Admission price is still £6 (£5 for under 16s and over 65s). The ticket price has not changed for four years now and represents good value for an evening of popular and light brass band music. David Fisher, the Musical Director, selects music with a wide appeal to both the general public and to brass band enthusiasts. Ken Henton, secretary told Local Reach, “Gone are the days of long operatic overtures and intricate and not-too-musical contest test pieces. We are a concert, rather than a contesting, band and we can therefore afford the time regularly to add new pieces to our repertoire, pieces which appeal to the general public as well as brass band aficionados. This has really paid off ov er the time David has been our MD and I believe we offer a really attractive programme of music in our concerts.” So, local or visitor to Burnham, come and enjoy an evening of entertaining light music.

Swimarathon raises funds for good causes The second Swimarathon, organised by the Rotary Club of Burnhan-on-Sea, has raised in excess of £3,600 for charity, with some donations still coming in. Many individual sponsors have donated under Gift Aid which is also to be added to the total. As reported in the March issue of LocalReach, the highly successful event attracted seventeen teams from local organisations, who between them raised sponsorship of over £3,100. A further £525 was generously sponsored by (in alphabetical order) Blake Veterinary Group, Clarity Bristol – Photocopiers, Dulhorn Farm Holiday Park, Greenslade Taylor Hunt, M J Patch Engineering, Tesco Stores. Warren Farm Holiday Park. William Haley Engineering and Woodlands Country House Hotel, while the main sponsor, Brean Leisure Park, provided free use of all their swimming facilities. The support of all these businesses is very much appreciated by the Club. The proceeds will be divided between the Dorset & Somerset Air Ambulance and local charities. The Rotary Club will organise its third Swimarathon in early 2014 when it is hoped that even more teams will participate, and further details will be announced nearer the time.

Cost clipping: share or rent garden goods to save waste and maybe make money By Nick Cater If your home is like mine, you live in an unspoken cloud of inanimate reproach from all the tools, gadgets and electronic geegaws that squat spurned and lifeless in corners and cupboards. “Use me!”, they silently cry as we pass by;“switch me on”, they implore as we ignore that drawer; and, worst of all, they moan and mutter in the clutter: “If only you had not lost that small bit, you could make me work once more.” Between the ease of purchase, the pressure of advertising and the self-deception that a new and costly thingamajig will transform our lives, save us time and make us better looking, we all have a lot of stuff. It may be apocryphal, but some insist that the average power drill is used for a mere few minutes during its entire lifetime before being thrown out, for recycling at best, and costly, polluting, wasteful landfill at worst. But what is the alternative to a consumerist life of clutter and waste? Actually, there are plenty of easy options when it comes to the things that we need intermittently at best, and Somerset’s Green Routine waste prevention campaign has collated a quick guide to those available in the county. Under the theme for May of “make money, save money, cut waste”, it sets out the simple question for everyone in Burnham-on-Sea: “Why buy when you can hire, borrow or share?” Ignoring the Shakespearean “neither a borrower nor lender be”, the starting point could be checking with

neighbours and friends before setting out to buy that bit of kit for kitchen, car or garden. They may well be happy that you borrow something that they rarely use, especially if you have something to lend in return. For more formal systems, Green Routine has links to Somerset’s own web-based rent, lend and share websites allowing anyone to request or offer goods and services, from a car ramp to a wedding dress or ironing. And the campaign offers simple tools to help you identify what you have that could bring in cash and so earn their place and space among your stuff. Of course, a quick check online or in the phone book can track down hire shops and DIY or garden stores where much of what you need could be rented for far less than the purchase price. And Burnham has a fantastic, free or low-cost and always highly-efficient service that supplies all manner of media: its library. As well as browsing the shelves, you can even go online to search and order from many thousands of the library books held in stock –just like shopping, but so much cheaper, and no waste. To save money, resources and space by wasting less, sign up for monthly campaign updates of hints and tips by visiting the Green Routine pages at www. somersetwaste.gov.uk.

May Work IN THE GARDEN … Flowers/Shrubs. All that recent rain will have washed a lot of nutrients out of the soil so now is a good time to replace them with some well rotted manure. This should be forked in before any planting is done. If manure is not obtainable you can use the following mixture, 1lb fish, blood and bone, 1lb sulphate of ammonia, and 1lb sulphate of potash. Mix together and fork into the top soil before planting summer flowers.

All bedding plants should be hardened by allowing as much light and air in as possible in readiness for planting out at the end of the month, watch out for any frost. Spray roses to prevent blight.

Vegetables. Again you will need to replace the nutrients that have been washed out of the soil with the method above.

Broad beans, beetroot, carrots, runner beans and parsnips can still be planted. Plant out seedlings of broccoli, brussel sprouts, cabbage and cauliflowers. Sow peas for August and September use. Tomato plants should be fed with liquid manure. Earth up early potatoes.

Wait for the soil to warm up before planting small seeds.
