Marine Cove The proposed family learning course at Marine Cove, planned to commence on Saturday 10th March, has been delayed. Community Gardener Jacqui Strong, in consultation with Somerset Skills and Learning, has decided to postpone the workshops to ensure as many families attend as possible. Jacqui Strong said "It’s a shame that we didn't get a higher sign-up rate, but having a young family myself I fully appreciate that time is of the essence and weekends are very busy. With the weather as unpredictable as it often is at this time of year we hope putting our plans back a couple of months, to warmer weather, will encourage more families to take part". However,

there is still lots going on at Marine Cove, the pancake flipping event raised £30 which was equally split between the Friends of Marine Cove and Biars. We are particularly interested in hearing from any young person who would like to be crowned May Day Marine Cove King and Queen. We will be holding auditions on Saturday 28th April at The Bay Centre, between 3pm and 5pm. The young people will be crowned on Monday May 7th at the garden, where there will be a traditional May Pole dance performed by pupils from St Josephs school and floral garlands being made by Burnham Area Evening Flower Club. For more information email events@marinecove. co.uk. There will also be the

chance to learn more about the Garden at events occurring during the summer, notably around May Day and this year’s Diamond Jubilee. With live music planned for Tuesday 6th June during the afternoon for more information contact events@marinecove.co.uk. The gardens are well used throughout the year and have an active Friends of Marine Cove group. The introduction of Lily the Frog as a recognisable mascot for the Gardens has also been a great success. We would like to hear from anyone who has ideas about how we could involve members of the community in Marine Cove Gardens or suggestions for future events that would be of interest to local residents and visitors. Somerset Community

county, who may be able to host a nest box and manage some of their land for wildlife. Volunteer barn owl surveys will be taking place and residents are being asked to report their barn owl sightings online. Along with family events and free public talks, the Trust is visiting 60 primary schools where children will be building nest boxes. Chris Sperring, MBE, Conservation Officer for the Hawk and Owl Trust and Vice President of Somerset Wildlife Trust said: “This is a very exciting project, and I have every belief that we will ultimately be increasing Somerset’s barn owl population, as well as helping other wildlife along the way. The Hawk and Owl Trust believes very strongly in working with other organisations and local communities to safeguard the future of owls and other wild birds of prey.” Lisa Nelson, General Manager of Viridor Credits said: “A key aim of Viridor Credits is the promotion of biodiversity. I am delighted to be able to help Somerset Wildlife Trust meet this aim via the Community Barn Owl Project with monies from the Landfill Communities Fund”. A national barn owl survey published by the Hawk and Owl Trust in 1987, recorded a 70 per cent drop in the number of pairs since the 1930s. In 1932 there was an estimated 12,000 pairs in England and Wales but by the mid-80s numbers had dropped to less than 3,800 pairs, with just 200 in Somerset. The Somerset Community Barn Owl Project will address two key causes of decline: Loss of traditional nesting sites within farm buildings and tree cavities and; loss of long, rough, grassland hunting habitat, due to intensification of agriculture. For more information about the project go to www.somersetwildlife.org/barnowl

Barn Owl Project Launched

Somerset Wildlife Trust is launching the Community Barn Owl Project to get a barn owl nest box in each of the county’s 335 parishes and give breeding barn owl numbers a boost. Once common sights, these icons of the open countryside declined by 70 per cent in just 50 years, due to loss of habitat. With up to 80 per cent of barn owls now nesting in man-made boxes, Somerset Wildlife Trust is teaming up with local communities to get a barn owl box in every parish. As well as tackling loss of traditional nesting sites, the project will create more of the rough grassland hunting habitat barn owls need. The three-year project will be launched on Friday, March 30 at an event in Bruton, east Somerset. It is funded by Viridor Credits Environmental Company; a charity that distributes money from the Landfill Communities Fund, and is a collaboration with the Hawk and Owl Trust; a national charity dedicated to conserving wild birds of prey and owls and their habitats. Simon Nash, Somerset Wildlife Trust’s Chief Executive said: “The sight of a barn owl is one of those wildlife experiences that leave you with a great sense of privilege. By providing a free barn owl box for every parish in Somerset we will be helping ensure they remain part of the Somerset countryside for generations to come.” The Trust is looking for landowners, across the Plant Sale and Open Garden on Saturday 5th May at Rookery House, The Causeway, Mark. Between 10.30 and 1.00pm Entrance will be £2 including coffee. There will also be cakes on sale, exhibitions, a raffle and activities for the children. Crime Prevention Advice from Insp Roger Tolley The Summer is coming. Who knows what the weather will be like but it is certain that we will all relax our guard and probably leave a door or a window open here and there. Be careful. It really only takes a moment for a thief to be in and steal. They are indiscriminate. Anything they can carry. Quickly, in and out, leaving you with days and weeks of upset afterwards. Remember also that thieves aren’t stupid. They look in the boot area of cars to see if you’ve left any valuables out of sight in there. Handbags, laptops, cameras…. Take them with you or not at all. If you are tempted by some good weather to BBQ in your garden, please be careful and mindful of the driving limits for alcohol. Your measures WILL

be bigger than those in the pub. Your safety and that of everyone else is put at greater risk with every sip, if you plan to drive. Finally, enjoy the coming season. There will be lots to do. You may be able to support your community by volunteering for one event or another. We always welcome volunteers at the station with many opportunities for anyone who has even a very small amount of time to spare. You can make a difference by joining your policing team. It’s always interesting, it’s always varied and it makes you feel good when you know you’ve made a difference. It’s why I keep coming to work. Please remember to make it more difficult for criminals at ALL times. If you see it, Report it.

Friends of Apex Park Improvements Group Easter Clay Wildlife Workshop - are you aged between 8-12 years? If so, come and join this creative but messy activity on Saturday 7th April. Rider Safety With the unseasonably mild winter we experienced motorcyclists are out in greater numbers to enjoy the sunshine, the warm days and an opportunity to get out on their favourite mode of transport. Motorcyclists can sometimes be easy to overlook at junctions so remember to look carefully for bikes. Bikes are also easy to lose in your blind spot so check carefully when changing lanes. Many riders garage their bike over the winter to avoid the cold, wet or icy weather. Whether your motorcycle has been languishing in the garage over the colder months or whether you’ve been regularly using it on salted roads, now is a good time to give it a quality health check. Check the following carefully: fluids (oil, fork oil and brake fluid), chain

(properly adjusted, cleaned and lubricated) or belt or shaft drive, lights, brakes and tyres . While you’re checking the bike over make sure all the nuts and bolts are properly tightened. If you haven’t ridden the bike in a long period or if you’ve just been using the bike for cold morning commutes in poor weather, you may find that your riding is a little rusty. Spring is a good time to think about getting a bit of extra coaching for your riding. Bikesafe courses are a cheap introduction to further training and Somerset Road Safety supports a number of schemes aimed at improving road riding, taking place both on the road and on the racetrack. You can find out more about these various options at www. somersetroadsafety.org/ motorcycling

HM Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Tea Party The residents of Highbridge who are aged 60 years or over are invited to a Tea Party which will be held in the Community Hall on Saturday 2nd June 2012

from 4.00 pm until 6.00 pm. Tickets for the Tea Party will cost £1.00 and will be made available during April. Residents who are over 60 years of age and who wish to attend the Tea Party should contact Rosemary Parsons on 785427. This local event will give those present the opportunity to reminisce about their experiences 60 years ago when the Coronation of our new Queen took place at Westminster Abbey. Diamond Jubilee arrangements – don’t leave it too late …. With the Queen already starting her Diamond Jubilee tour of the country, Sedgemoor District Council is reminding all those who want to organise a celebration to make sure that they are planning early and to apply for any necessary licences. This is especially important if you need to apply for a Road Closure for a Street Party, as the deadline for applications is the beginning of April, just three weeks away. Not all events will require a Road Closure. If your road is a cul-de-sac or spur road that does not service another road, or is not part of the 22

main thoroughfare of a Town or Village, then it is unlikely to need a Road Closure Notice, however, you should check with Sedgemoor District Council to be sure. For road closure information contact louise.potter@sedgemoor.gov.uk Organising small, private street parties is very simple and generally does not include activities that need a licence, such as the sale of alcohol or food (see below). Generally, the party should be: • For residents/neighbours only • Not publicised • Self-organised by the residents/neighbours. Larger events that are open to anyone to attend or are publicised in local newspapers or similar may require a licence. To gain early advice and to ensure your event goes to plan you should complete and return the form provided to Sedgemoor District Council. We will then get back to you to advise what permissions, if any, your event requires. If it is your intention to provide a pay bar or entertainment at the event then a Temporary Event Notice will be required. For the sale of goods (including food), then Temporary Street Trading Consent will be required. For alicensing information contact environmental.services@sedgemoor.gov.uk or the licensing unit at 01278 435398. Further advice can be obtained at www. communities.gov.uk/publications/communities/ streetpartyguide

Moose International lodge 123 to take over the Holistic weekend at Mooseheart This year’s Holistic Weekend being held at Mooseheart the first weekend in June – Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd, is being organised by the Burnham-on-Sea Lodge and Ladies’ Circle. The majority of members on the Organising Committee are members of the Lodge and Circle and, as in previous years, half of the money raised is donated directly to Mooseheart. There are now only a few places left in the marquee and the organisers urge potential exhibitors to book now to avoid disappointment. Last year over £3,000 was raised and shared between Mooseheart and St Margaret’s Hospice in Taunton. This year, as well as raising money once again for Mooseheart, the nominated charity is the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance and we are hoping to raise a similar amount, hopefully even more. Holistic therapies will be available over the whole weekend for you to try and in addition there will be arts and craft stalls, workshops and talks. Food and refreshments will be available in the grounds and at Mooseheart. As you are no doubt aware, the first weekend in June has been designated a Bank Holiday Weekend, incorporating the Spring Bank Holiday Monday on the 4th June and celebrating the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee on Tuesday 5th June.

As we will have a marquee ‘in situ’ in the field at Mooseheart for the Holistic Weekend, Burnham-onSea Lodge are taking advantage of the facilities and the extra Bank Holiday by organising a Rock ‘n’ Roll event on the Monday evening. Tickets are on sale at £10 each and food will be available; if you would like information about this event please contact Terry Cornelius on 01278 784645 or by email terronne@talktalk.net For more information about the weekend, either access the website www.holisticweekend.co.uk, or email info@holisticweekend.co.uk Highbridge Residents Association We meet at the Hope Baptist Church, Highbridge the first Thursday of every month. We can help with any resident's issues with housing association or council or the area where they live. We have an advocacy service & can help to fill out forms etc... Use our computers to job search find info etc.. Pop along to see us & enjoy a coffee & chat too. Contact Kim kim.chatwin@btinternet.com Burnham Area Evening Flower Club The next meeting will be held at St Andrew's Church Hall, BoS, on 16 April starting at 7.30pm. "Fantasy Worlds" is the intriguing title of Claire Foley's demonstration so why not come along for an interesting evening. Pay at the door.

Avalon Vintage Road Run We were very pleased to be chosen by the organisers of the Avalon Vintage Vehicle Road Run last year as the local charity they wished to support, and this is being continued this year. The Mendip Branch of the MS (Multiple Sclerosis) Society has been running for many years and covers the Mendip area from Cheddar to Frome, including Glastonbury, Street, Wells, Shepton Mallet and surrounding villages. We provide support to local people with MS as well as their families, friends and carers. 24

This year will be the 19th that Den and Daphne Stone have put on the Road Run, supported by of a loyal group of helpers. The Run has certainly grown since those early days, and takes in all sorts of vehicles, basically anything except tractors! Trophies are awarded for cars, commercial vehicles, military and American vehicles, as well as motor bikes. Not necessarily for the best condition, but also for something that stirs a memory from the past. Every year there is a `Residents Trophy` given for a vehicle which brings back a memory, chosen by a Glastonbury resident. They also give an`Old or Young`Trophy

which goes to the oldest owner one year and the youngest the next. The run starts at Glastonbury and goes to Burnham-on-Sea via a police-approved route, where it culminates with the presentation of Trophies in the evening by the Mayor of Burnham, who also kindly gives a Mayor`s Trophy. The Run takes in vehicles over 20 years old, so if you have such a vehicle, it is legal and roadworthy and you would be interested in joining in and meeting other like minded people, the organisers would be pleased to hear from you. You can get an entry form from Mrs Daphne Stone, 5 Ridgway Gardens, Glastonbury BA6 8ER, Tel. 01458 831147, email: daphestone@tesco.net
