LOCALREACH BURNHAM & HIGHBRIDGE

From the editor

Another full edition of Local Reach for February. As the buds are starting to breakthrough in the garden – so are the events in Burnham and Highbridge. Clubs and societies have been busy organising different things for the months ahead – so be sure not to miss out by regularly referring to your copy of Local Reach. The pantomime season is in full swing with Sleeping Beauty coming to the Princess Theatre at the end of January with tickets being available to purchase through The Barber Shop on the High Street. Don’t leave it too late or you may not get tickets. What better way to lift your spirits than an outing to your local theatre to see a show, put on by local people. The organisation of the Jubilee events will be progressing also, with the plan to have an outline of what will be happening in Burnham and Highbridge over the long Bank Holiday Weekend – published early 2012. Why not organise a Street Party? www.streetparty.org.uk may provide some useful information to help you on your way. Let us know if you are planning a street party as it would be good to publicise this in a future edition. This month we have some useful advice from local organisations as well as the usual community events and clubs that have organised various activities during February. I hope you enjoy this months edition. Jacqui Strong, LocalReach Community Editor for Burnham & Highbridge - jacqui@localreach.co.uk The deadline for the March issue is 17th February!

A heavy cold can affect driving as much as drinking alcohol Drivers suffering from a heavy cold or flu could be putting themselves and other road users at risk according to new research by Halfords and Young Marmalade. Somerset Road Safety believes the findings are a clear warning for drivers not to get behind the wheel if they’re suffering from heavy colds or flu. The research, which supports the findings of a recent study by Cardiff University, identifies that cold and flu sufferers experience a significant drop in concentration levels and reaction times whilst behind the wheel of a driving simulator. Sudden braking was seen to increase and cornering became erratic as drivers struggled to concentrate on the surrounding traffic. One participant in the study experienced a drop in driver rating from 95% (classed as excellent) to 60%, a level where an insurance company would expect the driver to be involved in a collision. This drop in performance is

similar to the effect of drinking over four double whiskies. Jim Newman, Road Safety Officer with Somerset Road Safety said: “Common conditions such as colds or flu, migraines, upset stomachs and allergies are often tolerated and the driver soldiers on regardless of the effects on their driving ability. We need to be more honest with ourselves about how these conditions affect our ability to drive safely.” “If you’re feeling unwell don’t get behind the wheel. If you must go out, take an alternative mode of transport or ask someone else to drive you.” Many popular over the counter medications can cause drowsiness or affect driving ability in other ways and Police have warned that a person rendered unfit to drive through medication is committing the same offence as if they had taken illegal drugs.

Is solar power dead? Not in the south west, it’s not. With the Government announcement bringing forward the cut in the Feed in Tariff, due to massive demand and falling prices - and to stop foreign speculators creaming off the money meant for homeowners some predicted a huge drop off in solar installations. But at Solarsense, the South West’s leading solar company, things are still very busy as they have managed to reduce their prices as well thanks to falling panel costs, which are approximately half what they were some 18 months ago. In conjunction with the South West being by far the best region in the UK for solar photovoltaic (electric) power, due to its ideal cool and bright conditions (high UV, cooling winds and low pollution levels), the lower

prices mean that investing in a solar PV system would still give a return on initial outlay of around 8% and upwards, which is tax free and index linked for 25 years of payments. Solarsense MD Stephen Barrett said, “A snapshot of why our clients are still going ahead with solar now, after the 12th December deadline, is that they still see it as a far better return than you could get from any bank. And perhaps more importantly, it gives a measure of future security against rising fuel costs.” www.solarsense-uk.com info@solarsense-uk.com caption for accompanying image: Rays of light pick out a recent Solarsense installation at a nearby Methodist Church.

Solarsense The South West’s leading solar installer since 1994 Installers of solar thermal and PV systems.  Sell surplus power at premium rates with the Feed in Tariff Scheme: - Up to 43.3p per kilowatt hour generated. - Expect a return on installation 'investment' cost of 8-12%.  Solarsense have installed over 4,500 domestic and commercial solar systems throughout the South West. Completed projects include Chew Magna and Chewton Mendip Primary Schools; the Clifton Lido; Redland Park Church; Oldfield Surgery, Bath, and the UK’s largest private rooftop PV system (200kWp) at Worthy Farm, Glastonbury.

including: type of fuel, appliance used, duration of use, moisture content of wood fuel, type of chimney. Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service are asking people to take extra care, especially when lighting up fires that haven't been used for a while. This advice comes after firefighters were called to several chimney fires in Somerset recently. As the cold weather is set to continue, more and more people in Devon and Somerset will be warming up their homes by lighting the traditional home fire. The fire service remind you that chimneys and flues need to be clean and well maintained to allow the free passage of dangerous combustion gasses, as well as being free of any blockages like bird nests and cobwebs. Regular cleaning will remove soot and help prevent dangerous chimney fires occurring. The chimney breast itself will need inspecting, particularly in the roof space, making sure that it is sound and that sparks or fumes cannot escape through cracks or broken bricks. Sweeping Frequencies Sweeping frequencies below are for guidance only. Frequency will depend on a number of factors

- Smokeless coals At least once a year - Wood Up to four times a year - Bituminous coal Twice a year - Oil Once a year - Gas Once a year

Growing in popularity are wood burning stoves and they also need to be checked regularly to ensure they are safe and clean, ensure wood burners are installed and maintained in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions DSFRS have provided some top tips for safer chimneys: • Always use a fire guard to protect against flying sparks from hot embers • Make sure embers are properly put out before you go to bed or leaving the house • When burning wood, use dry, seasoned woods only • Never burn cardboard boxes or waste paper • Do not overload the grate • Bird nests, cobwebs and other blockages within chimney to be removed • Consider having a carbon monoxide detector fitted as an additional safeguard against the build up of poisonous fumes • Have a working smoke alarm

Our Light up a life campaign provided the opportunity to remember and celebrate the life of that special someone whose light cannot be with us at Christmas. It was a very moving service attended by over 60 people who lit candles in remembrance whilst supporting the wonderful work of St. Margaret's. The collection this year amounted to £433.11 which was fantastic and such a great help to our Fundraising. A very warm thank you to the Reverend

Hospital Friends Quiz Following last year's enjoyable and successful quiz to raise funds for the Friends of Burnham Hospital another quiz is planned for Saturday, February 4th in Highbridge Community Hall. The question master is the ever popular Chris Williams who, despite being a retired school teacher, still enjoys marking, so this quiz is unique in that you don't have to mark your own or other team's answers.

Chris is also adept at posing questions that are answerable by most but at the same time is able to include questions that tax the brains/memories of the most knowledgeable. The last round - his 'Stinker Round' - gives all teams the chance to win as it includes such questions as 'In which decade was the lawnmower invented?' Few of us carry this sort of trivia in our heads. The evening is designed

as a social occasion and you are invited to bring your own drinks, although substantial nibbles will be provided. The cost is £10 for a team of up to 4 people and the doors of the Highbridge Community Hall will open at 6.45pm with the quiz starting at 7.30pm prompt. Do come along to have a great evening and at the same time support your local hospital. To book a table please phone Tony on 783121 or Bernie on 785727. Numbers are limited.

BiARS is your local information centre. Much more than just tourist information, and run entirely by volunteers, we are encouraging the community to come in and see what we have to offer. We sell Berry’s Coaches tickets, Bristol Blue Glass, aerial photographs of Burnham and surrounding area as well as local guide books and artefacts. We rely on the small profit we make from these sales, and donations, to cover our overheads which, in turn, will ensure that BiARS continues to remain open. Since April 2011 over 60,000 people have visited us, proving that the centre continues to be an advantage both to Burnham on Sea and to its tourist trade. If you would like to volunteer, come in and see us. We are open until the middle of March every day from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. During the summer season our hours will be 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. seven days a week. You can find us on The Esplanade and our telephone number is 01278 787852.

North Sedgemoor Childrens Centre Cluster Family Voice held their first meeting on 6th December at Highbridge Childrens Centre. The group has been set up to give families that use the North Sedgemoor Cluster of Children’s Centres the opportunity to share ideas and opinions about the running of the centres. The families that use our services play a huge role in the work of the North Sedgemoor Children’s Centre Cluster and it is important for us to have a good cannel of communication between families and staff members. This is the role of Family Voice. Joining the group gives you the opportunity to meet other families and playing a part in organising social events, fundraisers and trips to enhance the children’s personal experiences and give your suggestions and opinions and work with other families who use the centres. Sign up to Family Voice and help make a difference! Look out for the date of the next meeting or contact your local centre. New name for Marine Cove Frog The knitted frog character that has been created from the design produced by Sam Morris has now been given a name! At the official opening of Marine Cove there was the opportunity to pick a name for the frog and then Friends of Marine Cove would then choose their preferred option. The names suggested ranged from Fredd the Frog, Ribbity, Sid, Jumpy .......... but the name chosen was Lily. So after months of being known as The Marine Cove Frog - we can now refer to her as Lily the Frog. The name was suggested by local resident Helen Barsby, who will receive her very own knitted Lily the Frog. We have had a really good response from local people who are volunteering their time to knit the frogs that will be sold at future events, so one way of supporting the future projects at Marine Cove would be too buy a frog from one of our events or through the Information Centre on the Esplanade, where they will be available to buy along with the popular Frog-in-a-Bag, which enables you to knit your own frog. There are also several events planned at Marine Cove during 2012 starting with a sponsored Pancake Flip on Tuesday 21st February at 4pm. Sponsor forms can be obtained from Jacqui Strong via Jacqueline. strong@sedgemoor.gov.uk or by calling 01278 435328 any funds raised will be split between The Friends of Marine Cove for future events at the garden and Burnham Information and Rescue Support. We are keen to encourage new volunteers to The Friends of Marine Cove. For an opportunity to meet some of the volunteers, feel free to come to the Monday Maintenance Session on the first Monday in the Month between 10am and mid-day. The next meeting of the Friends of Marine Cove is on Tuesday 6th March at 6.15pm at the Community Centre Berrow Road – Burnham on Sea. For information on future events contact events@marinecove.org.uk or visit www. marinecove.org.uk.

Bubbling Springs Tai Chi

Be Security Savvy … Yet again I will join the throng who claim that the years go by more quickly and suddenly we find ourselves in February already. Have you done those little jobs you promised to do? Did you put up that outside light? Check the lock on the shed? Marked your tools? Come on. Spring is just around the corner. Don’t leave it until the weekend you were going to start the gardening to find someone has had your mower away or decided on an uninvited redistribution of your assets to his colleagues.

Check it, Mend it, Mark it….. this weekend. A couple of months ago there were some visitors from outside our area who were breaking into houses in some of the outlying villages. A most distressing experience for victims that will often take a long time to come to terms with. Trying to catch those responsible for such a violation of personal space together with the loss of a victim’s property really is a top priority for your team of Officers and PCSO’s. Unfortunately we come after the event. Much as we like to meet you all, we would honestly prefer not to have to in those circumstances. We all need to

work together to stop this type of crime happening. The longer criminals stay at large, the more victims they will create. Your role in catching them and stopping further offending can come in many shapes and forms. The easiest one of them is to remember, ”If you see it, report it”. You will never be a nuisance. It may be your call that is the one that makes the difference for everyone else. Start to meet your Police BEFORE it happens. Telling us about it is actually protecting yourselves and the rest of the community. Please remember to make it more difficult for criminals at ALL times. Roger TOLLEY - Burnham-on-Sea Inspector.

Is delighted to announce that founder and principle instructor Cheryl Mountford is now fully qualified as a Medical Qigong Practitioner. Medical Qigong Therapy is an ancient Chinese healing art, estimated to be around 5,000 years old. It is a branch of Traditional Chinese Medicine which includes acupuncture, herbalism and Tuina massage. Qigong (pronounced "chee-gung") means the skill of cultivating vital Qi energy. For a number of reasons, your Qi can become disturbed, blocked or depleted which can result in pain, illness, or just a feeling of disharmony. The treatment, (which involves sitting or lying, fully clothed,) includes specific healing techniques used to purge, tone or activate the body's vital energy systems, replenishing your Qi,.

Restoring balance to the body's Qi is the key to health and well-being. The process can be extremely relaxing and sometimes the patient will be aware of the movement of energies as the systems start to rebalance. By clearing away blockages and increasing your overall vitality, Medical Qigong Therapy refreshes every dimension of your being l. FEBRUARY IN THE GARDEN … FLOWERS/SHRUBS. Tuberous begonias can be started this month, start the tubers in small pots on the surface of rich loamy soil. Plant with the hollow side on top and pot up into larger pots when growth has begun. Nurse with care, frosts are fatal. A temperature of 40 - 50 degrees should be maintained at night, watering should be done carefully. Place dahlia tubers in boxes, cover them with soil and a little water to induce the growth of new shoots. After repotting fuchsias, give them a little bottom heat and spray the tops with tepid water to introduce new growth.

Geranium roots which have been stored can also be started back into growth with a little bottom heat, Stir the surface of bulb beds with a fork as soon as the shoots show above the ground. If you have the room you can start sowing some half-hardy annuals this month. Asters, coleus, petunias, phlox, lobelia, tobacco plants, dahlias from seed, they will all need some bottom heat to germinate. VEGETABLES. The secret of success in the vegetable garden is to sow early. Seeds sown this month must be protected during the late frost and should therefore

be sown in a sheltered position in the garden. Seeds for sowing are cabbages, early cauliflower, leeks, brussel sprouts, broad beans and peas in the garden. You can plant shallots now. Press the bulbs half-way into the soil, they should be 8" apart in rows and the rows should be 12" apart. Tomatoes - sow early in the year towards the end of the month. Select suitable varieties. Keep the plants sturdy. Thick stems, shortjointed and dark green foliage should be developed before the young plants are put into their permanent position.

For more tips why not join your local gardening group? The Burnham and District Horticultural Society meets at 7.30 pm on the third Monday of each month (except December) at the Community Centre, Berrow Road. On Monday 16th January 2012, Michael Smith will be giving a presentation on seed raising and propagation. All welcome. Members of the Society free, visitors £1.00.

Burnham Farmers Market Friday February 24th! Just a reminder that the town’s popular monthly farmers market takes place on the last Friday of the month from 9am-1pm in the High Street –just look out for the stripy canopies! Organised by Somerset Farmers markets Burnham is one of a network of 10 venues around the area and brings the best of local produce directly to the customer and an opportunity to meet with the producers. Farms from the surrounding locality include Moorland Beef from Axbridge who bring their grass fed Aberdeen Angus, Ellises farm who produce free range rare breed pork plus a tasty range of home cured salami’s and chorizo! Ham Street Farm are very well established on the market with free range eggs and quiches made from their own Tamworth Pork and Eggs near Glastonbury. A new addition to the market last year was Holly of Beechcroft farm near Wellington who produces a wide range of free range poultry and is also busy developing her own range of Chicken pies & pasties to complement the fresh meat- perfect for day trippers or office staff as an alternative to sandwiches! We also have cheeses, bread, preserves, game, eggs, local fudge, baked goods and organic vegetables in season and usually one or two interesting guests. The market also is developing a community role providing local groups or charities with a free stall (one per market) to promote their activities. We have welcomed the staff of a local building society as they have raised money for ‘Mencap’ their chosen charity, the local neighbourhood watch scheme and community policeman! At Christmas we enjoyed being entertained by the youngsters of the ‘Dreamscheme’ project whose delightful carol singing raised them £80 towards activities to benefit local children and young people.
