Annual Tennis Blitz The Avenue Tennis Club will be visiting Burnham on Sea’s junior schools throughout April, May and June as part of their Annual Tennis Blitz. This will be aimed at reminding the town’s juniors what a fantastic tennis facility with 8 floodlit courts and a superbly equipped club house that we have – all families and their children are invited along to a FREE session at the club on a Friday evening from 6:30 till 8:30 throughout May and Jun as part of this. rackets – the summer sees us using the schools playgrounds and doing some fun ball and racket coordination skills – the feedback and level of interest shown during the sessions is fantastic we just need to try and get the kids from their schools down to the Tennis Club which is situated in the Grove off of Stoddens Rd. A Junior School Holiday Tennis Camp will run from 6th to 8thJun from 9:00 till 4:00pm daily where juniors will be coached a variety of tennis shots through fun games. Crime Prevention
Burnham Buildings Leisure
At the time of writing this there is the prospect of snow after a glorious start to the month. Some things take us by surprise but that is easier to deal with, especially if we cannot effect it. Often being the victim of crime has the same effect but the difference is we can reduce the risk. It isn’t until you have lost something that you consider all the things you could have done to make it harder for the crook, easier for you to identify property if it is recovered and it is often at this time, we think about how to stop it happening again. Let’s cut out the middle man and go straight to preventing it happening. Call your beat team to discuss ways of reducing the chances of being a victim. Speak to your neighbours about starting a neighbourhood watch if you’re not already in one. Think of it this way; if you look out for shady characters for only ten minutes a day and there are 50 people in the NHW scheme, all looking out for 10 minutes each, together you’ve increased you vigilance by 50 times. Make it harder for criminals.

Lets sing
Start of Summer Concerts
Local singing group 'The Coastline Singers', meet on Tuesday evenings in the Methodist Church Hall, West Huntspill. Two hours of great fun, singing good music, meeting new people whilst having fun. The group sing a variety of music for all sorts of occasions. Come and try it out - 7.30 to 9.30pm. More details from 01278 784184 or email mary. lawrence@lineone.net.
Burnham and Highbridge Band are pleased to announce that their popular Sunday Evening Concerts will begin again on the evening of Sunday 27th May. Each concert, held on the last Sunday of each month begins at 7.45pm. Admission price is still £6 (£5 for under 16s and over 65s). The ticket price has not changed for three years now and represents good value for an evening of popular and light brass band music. David Fisher, the Musical Director, selects music with a wide appeal to both the general public and to brass band enthusiasts. Ken Henton, secretary told Local Reach, “Gone are the days of long operatic overtures and intricate and not-too-musical contest test pieces. We are a concert, rather than a contesting, band and we can therefore afford the time regularly to add new pieces to our repertoire. This has really paid off over the time David has been our MD and I believe we offer a really attractive programme of music in our concerts.” This year, we are adding an extra concert to the series when we play in November to celebrate 20 years of the University of the Third Age (U3A) in Burnham. There will therefore be a concert each month until Christmas. The Burnham and Highbridge Band are also due to give an outdoor concert on Tuesday 5th June as part of the Jubilee Celebrations. This will be held in Marine Cove Gardens. So, local or visitor to Burnham, come and enjoy an evening of entertaining light music.

Solar energy specialists help energise Ethiopia Thousands of homes in the South West are benefiting from the clean green energy of solar power, and now the same technology is being used to improve the health of rural communities in one of Africa’s poorest nations. A team of volunteers from the South West’s leading renewable energy specialists has just returned from 2 weeks spent installing solarpowered fridges for storing vaccines at remote health posts in a rural area of Ethiopia. Recognising the desperate need for properly refrigerated vaccines in the heat, the company raised money through donations and fund-raising activities for its charity partner For-Ethiopia, which works to relieve poverty and sickness in the East African country. Staff from Solarsense travelled to a rural area west of the capital Addis Ababa at the end of March. They installed solar photovoltaic (PV) panels on the roofs of three health posts to generate electricity, fitted the vaccine fridges and trained key local people in how to operate and maintain the fridges. The team of three also revisited another health post, Beso, where Solarsense staff installed solar PV
and a vaccine fridge last year. Each of these posts serves at least 2,000 people, as well as supplying properly refrigerated vaccines to other nearby health posts. The electric fridges safely store vaccines used to immunise children against potentially fatal diseases such as tuberculosis, polio, tetanus and diphtheria. When the temperature of these vaccines reaches 8 degrees C, the potency is destroyed and they have to be discarded. Before the solar-powered fridge was installed at Beso, one in three vaccines had to be discarded but now the wastage rate is down to zero. Stephen Barrett of Solarsense said: “We have installed solar energy systems on thousands of homes and business premises across the South West, and are glad to be able to use our expertise in helping communities in other parts of the world.” The Solarsense charity team offer workshops and presentations for school or other community groups on solar power and its impacts in the developing world. Computer Cold Calling advice Welcome to my new monthly column on computer related issues. The plan is to give regular tips and advice to help you get the most from your computer. To give you some background, I have been running Computer Problem Solutions since 1996 - and became a Limited company in 2005. Since the start, we have been at the forefront of local IT support for both home users & small business. My background was originally working for Lloyds Bank in their IT department as a software developer, then onto a large UK law firm. I decided to 'go it alone' when I could see a growing requirement for local IT support and have never looked back. My first tip concerns an issue I hear about a little too often - the phone rings and somebody claiming to be from Microsoft tells you that your computer has a virus. They are very insistent and try to show you that you have a problem (which is not actually a problem, but a list of the computers own workings that are nothing to worry about). These people then offer to remote control your computer and then spend at least an hour removing any anti-virus software and install a free anti-virus package which is likely
to be of less quality than the product that you currently own. Afterwards is the shock, of being asked to pay around £50-£160 for a support package. At this point, most people get suspicious and end up calling somebody "in they know" for advice, after which people then realise that this is a con trick. Unfortunately, I have known quite a few individuals who have paid money over, only to find that the transaction is often duplicated several times and much more money taken out, or at best, a worthless service being provided. Should anybody cold-call you and say that your computer has a virus, I would suggest saying politely "No thanks" and put the phone down. If you are concerned that you have inadequate virus protection, please contact a local IT support company who will be happy to check out your computer and advise on antivirus software. Please note that 'free' anti-virus software in my opinion is not worth it - a fully paid package gives the best protection. Neil Buzzard Managing Director Computer Problem Solutions Ltd

New shop opens in Burnham-on-Sea to raise funds for animal rescue The National Animal Welfare Trust (NAWT) has opened a new charity shop in Burnham-on-Sea on Saturday 21st April to raise money for the care and re-homing of animals. The Regent Street shop is based eight miles from the Trust’s Somerset Rescue Centre at Heaven’s Gate Farm, Langport and will be an important way of promoting its work. In addition to a wide range of items for sale, the shop will
also display some of the latest animals available for re-homing. The Somerset Centre of the NAWT started operating 21 years ago and rehomes almost 350 dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs and field animals a year. The fundamental principle of our approach to animal welfare is that no healthy animal will be put to sleep. Money raised goes towards their care. NAWT Director of Resources Jacquie Gaywood said: “We wouldn’t be able to help so many animals without your support. This new shop will provide additional income and help us to continue our work.” The official opening takes place at 11am on Saturday April 21 and will be opened by Nick Walters, chair of the charity’s trustees. The shop welcomes donations of clothes, books, toys, bric a brac and any household items. You can either deliver to the charity shop during opening hours or to the Langport centre. It is that time of year for a spring clean, so if you are thinking of throwing some bits out then cut the refuse on the landfills and recycle it with us.

Notice board The rehearsals for the future production of Pinafore Pirates are well underway, the cast of 35 of busy learning their songs and lines for the light opera performance set to be staged in October at The Princess Theatre & Arts Centre. There are still opportunities for more chorus members by contacting Jacqui Strong via rubecottage@msn.com. The Fun Day was enjoyed by all that attended and was a great celebration for all the hardwork the members of the Dreamscheme have undertaken in the past 12 months. With volunteers doing a variety of tasks, we are keen to hear from anybody with available time or with valuable skills in the following: Singing/acting (to develop some of the skills of the young people in the production)
Back Stage Production (for basic scenery) Gardening skills – for a community garden venture that is planned, whether this is by physically being able to help or educationally, providing information to the members of the dreamscheme to assist with planting/growing and caring of plants. If you have any plants looking for a home then get in touch with John Alexander on 07961049868. We would also like to hear from anyone interested in running an after school club from September and producing some structured activities that could be undertaken by the members for the good of the community they live in. All volunteers will be recruited pending a CRB check. Some of the opportunities are looking for specific skills that would be valuable with the projects being developed by the Burnham Dreamscheme.
Mad Dogs and Motorcyclists You’ve seen it already. Summer’s here and motorcycles are definitely out on show. The bikes are gleaming in the sunshine, the riders leathers and kit are looking clean but beyond the surface how polished is their riding? Compared to the average car driver, riders spend a lot of money customising their motorcycles. One thing that often gets overlooked in the pursuit of customisation is the rider’s own skill level. If a rider really wants to improve comfort or performance, it might just be that some extra coaching or specific training might be the best thing to do Would you like to spend a day having your riding assessed by Advanced Police Motorcyclists? Bikesafe can offer that for as little as £35. Do you want to spend the day learning how to improve braking and cornering, then lapping Castle Combe Circuit under instruction? Rider Performance offers all that and more for only £99. Do you want to spend a day with a 24
retired police motorcyclist, or a professional instructor, on some of the best riding roads in the south west? Max Rider can offer that from £99 per rider per day for two riders. How about a course on how to manage a collision scene and deliver first aid in case a rider you know is involved in a crash? What about a full residential weekend of training with the police? All of these courses are available and Somerset Road Safety believes passionately that they help to improve the biking experience as well as improving your chances out on the roads. At a cost of anything from £35 upwards, Somerset’s motorcyclists can benefit from coaching that suits their budget and meets their requirements. Next time someone you know is thinking about replacing their exhaust, why not suggest they have a look at the options above? Full details can be found at www.somersetroadsafety.org/ motorcyclists.html Or call Jim Newman on 01823 423430
